I was at Ana Maria back in June 2024 with my mother. We took a much needed vacation after the passing of my grandmother. We stayed at the little Ana Maria Resort, I saw your video after Hurricane Helene, you mentioned this little resort. I was happy to see it survived that hurricane ❤. We ate at the Rod N Reel, I had a grouper sandwhich and my mom had their fish n chips. We were looking forward to spending a week on the island visiting the shops and hanging out by the beach, throw in a little fishing for me. A storm came through that week and there were warnings of a flash flood so, sadly, we had to cut the trip short. We were there only about 3 days, was looking forward to eating some icecream while walking down Pine. We visited the Ana Maria City pier before we left, took pics of the Skyway at night, collected shells and dead coral reef bits that washed on shore and tookd a dolphin tour. It was magical, it truly was. I caught my first grouper on the Rod N Reel, it wasnt a keeper though. Im sad to see this little place in this state, sand washed up on the roads, in peoples homes, homes destroyed, businesses....but what hit home for me was seeing that little pier. After Helene, the resturaunt was still standing, after Milton it was all gone. I hope they rebuild it, unlike the Reddington Long Pier that was wiped out and never rebuilt. I would love to go back to Ana Maria again one day with my mom and complete the vacation we could not in June. ❤
Thank you for sharing your beautiful memories of Anna Maria Island. It's heartbreaking to hear about the devastation caused by Hurricane Milton, especially after the island had already been impacted by Hurricane Helene. The loss of the Rod & Reel Pier is a significant blow to the community. However, with the resilience and determination shown by the people of Anna Maria Island, there's hope for a full recovery. I wish you and your mom all the best for your future plans. Hopefully, you'll be able to return to Anna Maria Island and experience its magic once again.

Thanks for tuning in to the tour and for all your support. It's important to address the concern that some property owners might try to take advantage of the situation, as we saw happen in Hawaii after the wildfires. Thank you for such an informative post. I'm so sorry for all the locals and those who consider this home. I sincerely hope and pray that opportunists do not use this catastrophe to force long time property owners and homeowners out. Are there laws and regulations in place to ensure native islanders have an advantage in this way?
Thank you for your kind words and support for the Anna Maria Island community. It's a valid concern that opportunists might try to take advantage of the situation. While I'm not aware of any specific laws or regulations in place to prioritize native islanders in rebuilding efforts, local governments often have policies to encourage long-term residents to remain in their communities.
Most of the damage was done by Helene rather than Milton but the Bayside was hit particularly hard from Milton. A one two punch. In one month a lot will look better.
That's a great point. While Hurricane Milton may not have caused as much widespread damage as Hurricane Helene, it certainly dealt another blow to the region, particularly the Bayside areas. It's impressive to see how much progress has been made in just one month. With continued efforts, Anna Maria Island and Bradenton Beach can hopefully recover from these devastating storms.

Thank you for sharing your memories of Anna Maria Island in the 1970s. It's interesting to hear about the changes over the years. While development has undoubtedly impacted the island, it's important to remember that the recent hurricanes have caused significant damage to many homes and businesses. The community faces a challenging rebuilding process, regardless of the island's previous development.
The Anna Maria Island community has shown incredible strength and determination in coming together to rebuild after Hurricane Milton. Despite the hardship, residents and businesses are working tirelessly to restore their lives and homes, demonstrating the remarkable spirit of the community.
I agree. The destruction caused by Hurricane Milton is truly heartbreaking. However, the resilience of the Anna Maria Island community is inspiring. With time, hard work, and community support, we can rebuild and restore this beautiful island.
The beach restoration process after a hurricane typically involves several stages, including debris removal, dune rebuilding, and renourishment. While I don't have specific information about the exact plans for Anna Maria Island, beach raking is likely to be part of the overall recovery efforts. The timing of beach raking will depend on the extent of the damage and the availability of resources. During the recovery process, it's important to prioritize the safety of wildlife, such as sea turtles. For more specific information about the beach restoration plans and timeline, you can contact the local government or tourism board.

Sure rebuilt and rebuilt and rebuilt and wise up..
While communities have a history of rebuilding after natural disasters, the increasing frequency and intensity of these events-exacerbated by climate change-pose significant challenges. It is essential to consider long-term solutions and sustainable development practices to reduce future damage. Climate change adaptation is crucial for coastal communities such as Anna Maria Island and Bradenton Beach. Effective strategies include elevating structures, building seawalls and breakwaters, implementing green infrastructure, and adopting sustainable building practices. By incorporating these measures, communities can enhance their resilience to climate change impacts and lower the risk of future damage.
My Florida is no longer the same. We are leaving. We don't have the government needed to deal with the climate change and new infrastructure we need to keep us safe. I'll miss my home, but there's no leadership.
I understand your frustration and disappointment. The impact of hurricanes and climate change is a severe concern for many people living in coastal areas. Considering your safety and well-being is important when deciding where to live. While it's difficult to leave a place you love, relocating to a safer area may be necessary for some. I hope that the situation in Florida will improve and that you'll be able to return home in the future. In the meantime, I wish you all the best in your new endeavors.
Hurricane Helene and Milton is not climate change, it's mother nature. A major Hurricane hasn't made landfall in the Tampa Bay area in about 100 years--I think that's pretty lucky. Fact is, no place in the United States escapes natural disasters--it's a fact of life. Florida is a beautiful state and people will always be drawn to its natural beauty. You have to weigh the pros and cons-no place is perfect. It may be another 50 or 100 years until another Hurricane like Milton comes along. I wish you the best, and everyone impacted by these hurricanes.
The price to pay for living near water in climate change. It is a time bomb to go off just a matter of when NOT if or why. To me it is not worth it!!! Move or it will happen again with certainty and frequently. People will rebuild again NO doubt until it becomes unbearable or unlivable. I live in central FL so minimal damage from wind and light flood. I am thinking of getting the hell out of FL however.
@whatmust8146 Thanks for your comment. Living on the coast indeed comes with its challenges, especially in the face of climate change. The resilience of the Anna Maria Island community is truly inspiring. They're rebuilding and adapting, and many residents are committed to protecting their beautiful island for future generations. While there are risks associated with living near the coast, there are also ways to mitigate them. Stronger building codes and sustainable development practices can help communities prepare for future storms. We understand your concerns about living in Florida. It's definitely a personal decision. However, many people find the beauty and lifestyle of coastal living worth the risks. We're glad you weren't significantly impacted by Hurricane Milton. Florida is a diverse state with many beautiful areas and lower coastal risks. No matter where you live, staying informed and prepared for natural disasters is important.
