  • Join me as I explain the difference between 'Real' and 'Fake' 4Ks & discuss the merits and issues of these 4K UHDs that are created from 2K sources.
Next up is a discussion on buying second hand blu-ray and some of the problems that come with that. I bought 5 blu-rays for less than £10 to see if great movies can really be had so cheaply and if the quality is up to scratch.

This is such a well articulated video. Great points throughout and great for entry level collectors and film enthusiasts to get to grips with the concept. Thanks for sharing 👍

Whatever they did to Coraline, the 4k disc looks amazing.

This is why I don't waste my time with Disney 4Ks. The films released from 1990-2019 were rendered in 2K.

The Caroline information says native 4k restoration and there are several sites out there saying was restored from the original camera negative

If you’re referring to the blu-ray . com site, ‘native 4k’ simply means the disc is 4k. It doesn’t mean it came from a 4k source. Which sites are saying it was scanned from a 4k source? Everything I’ve seen suggests it’s likely a 2K upscale.

Shout factory site says new 4k restoration and channels such as 'Movie guy 365' , 'films at home' and 'in search of physical media' say the same thing new 2022 4k restoration

@user-by9bu2jw1n it’s confusing but… yes it’s a 4k restoration (meaning the end product is a 4k image) but that doesn’t mean the source was 4k. Even Jeff mentions upscale in his review. Truthfully the only people who know what elements they used are the studio and they haven’t confirmed either way. I even reached out to them but didn’t get a response.
I looked into this in great detail and the consensus is that they wouldn’t have paid for a rescan of the original elements and instead used the 2k master and worked on that. Happy to be proven wrong, genuinely, but I’m really not sure that’s the case.
The terminology that studios use is often purposefully applied to obscure the full process and is almost never explained properly.
I’ll keep digging around on this one as I do find it intriguing and would love to get some actual confirmation. Thanks for your comment!

Upscaled 4k movies can look noticeable better than standard blu ray especailly if they have good hdr color and light grading imo. Buy preowned or wait for good sales

Thanks, I'm totally new to Blu-ray and would like to hear what you have to say on secondhand buying too. Anything I can glean is good! 😊

why was the live component of your video reversed? Didn't make sense when the products were the correct way around.

2k upscaked looks better then the actual 4k, real 4k is darker then blu ray version were fake as you put it aren't, like the criterion walle release is 2k upscaked, and has the sane brightness as the blu ray version
