- Paul Schrader, Ethan Hawke, and Cedric Kyles discuss First Reformed at a sneak preview at the Film Society of Lincoln Center.
Paul Schrader’s newest film, about a middle-aged pastor named Toller (Ethan Hawke, in a truly extraordinary performance) who is shocked out of his self-inflicted torment when he is called to minister to a troubled young environmental activist and his wife (Philip Ettinger and Amanda Seyfried), is as deeply personal as it is politically and spiritually urgent. The film also stars Cedric the Entertainer as the leader of the megachurch that oversees Toller’s 250-year-old landmarked structure and his ever-dwindling congregation. Schrader has created a potent cinematic experience, a carefully constructed, beautifully crafted communion with one lonely soul that allows us to gaze right into the eye of modern media- and money-fueled horror. An NYFF55 selection. An A24 release.
The Film Society of Lincoln Center is devoted to supporting the art and elevating the craft of cinema. The only branch of the world-renowned arts complex Lincoln Center to shine a light on the everlasting yet evolving importance of the moving image, this nonprofit organization was founded in 1969 to celebrate American and international film. Via year-round programming and discussions; its annual New York Film Festival; and its publications, including Film Comment, the U.S.’s premier magazine about films and film culture, the Film Society endeavors to make the discussion and appreciation of cinema accessible to a broader audience, as well as to ensure that it will remain an essential art form for years to come.

IMO, this film should be seen during the afternoon, so there are plenty of hours to reflect upon it for a few hours before you sleep. A great film.
Exactly how I saw it. Felt very similar to when I first saw Taxi Driver; just a film that lingers in the back of your head for a while. Schrader’s a great writer/director.
I’ve watched First Reformed a few times and it gets more interesting every time I see it. I never thought much of Schrader as a director. But he does have a very diverse filmography. Gotta admit that. And he’s definitely not a Hollywood guy. He’s stubborn in his independence.
First Reformed is a powerful film. A "must see" as they say whoever they are.
Fascinating discussion on First Reformed. I thought the movie was really good. It's cool to hear Ethan Hawke, Cedric the Entertainer, & Paul Schrader's take on the subject matter. I'm always struck at how thoughtful Hawke is in interviews.
Only watch AFTER you have seen the film - lots of spoilers! Great interview with smart folks.
Agree with Schrader on the aspiration towards elitism. Thank you for sharing this interview, very thoughtful conversation - check out our review of First Reformed and our thoughts on the ending!
really wished he kept on talking. it seemed like there was more to that tangent
Wow, Cedric is a comedian? He was fantastic in the role.
I know Schrader said he didn't hire him to be funny, but I chortled in that scene where he rotates his desk chair in exasperation as Rev Toller bemoans the state of the environment. Brilliantly subtle. But he also balance a pastor's compassion with the financial brutality of running a large church. He turned in a great performance.
He's always been a good actor, but yes he's known as Cedric The Entertainer...
Cedric was a great casting
wonderful! i loved this movie!
Amazing film!
Paul,I'm praying Jeremiah 17:14 for your eye healing!:)Screened First Reformed 2 days ago in a packed art house cinema in Central PA.That ending?......
&Ethan The Mosquito Coast was one of my fave River performance,Bless him Now&Forever:)
The ending of First Reformed was the only part of the movie that I had a bit of a problem with. It seemed like a little too much of a deliberate effort to stun and confuse the viewer. Not saying it’s a bad ending. Just a little on the deliberately confusing side to me.
you know you know you know
Ha! Yeah, Cedric reminded me of a pro athlete answering questions after a game with the non stop “you know’s.”
He was super nervous
