As an American, I’d never even heard of Efteling until I started watching your videos yesterday. This ride, and the park as a whole, seems amazing!

Its the largest theme park in Europe, 6 coasters, darkrides, shows including one of the worlds largest fountain show, many smaller rides, hotels, resorts and even a golf course.... Yeah its not as big as the Disney Resort in Orlando obviously , but you'll easily be entertained for days here.

I can't speak for the whole world, but it's definitely the best dark ride in Europe. I love POTC and Phantom Manor at Disneyland Paris, but with those you can sometimes tell you're in a showbuilding, especially if you look at the ceiling. When I rode Symbolica, I was blown away by the fact there is theming 360 degrees around you. Every floor, every ceiling and every wall is themed. No black walls, no blacklight, no corrugated metal ceilings. I was even looking behind me, because I knew there had to be a spot which wasn't decorated, but I couldn't find one. It's the only dark ride where there isn't any "real world" stuff that takes me out of the experience. It is truly an amazing piece of theme park design and engineering. Pretty sad Henny Knoet didn't live to see his creations finally get a respectable place in the park.
This doesn't even compare to the brilliant and over 25 years older parisian PotC, which has a lot better animatronics, an intricate lighting and compared to the funky nonsense kids-ride Symbolica tons of atmosphere.

a slide side not. The creator of Pardoes and its story did not wanted a ride fore his creation. Its a little bit complicated. He wanted to leave the story of Pardoes up to the imagination. Only images and stories, the rest you had to think of yourself. He thought that was the true power.
@@QDude24 Frozen isn't a movie for adults either, I still enjoyed the ride in Epcot due to its amazing animatronics and lovely sets including the sophisticated projections. Symbolica was dull regarding the Storyline and the animatronics are overwhelming. The style of the sets are a little too childish for my taste and I really dislike the fact, that you have to wait outside for the pre-show if it rains.
@@leanen6424 LOL, frozen in epcot has almost no decoration or anything, its cool for the first time but after that one.. Symbolica is way better without its screens, projected faces etc. And due to its "childish theme" its the palace of fantasy what do you expect?
Gosh, that music really is is beautiful though! Honestly that whole ride is beautiful. If you took out the animatronics you could film a movie in there and I wouldn’t even notice!
I lived in the Netherlands for a time and i was pretty close to Efteling, i remember when the ride opened and i was just so blown away, it's one of the most amazing dark rides that actually makes you feel like you are in another world.

And without the ridiculous prices! Efteling is real value for the quality you get. Somehow in Disneyland you always feel like you are getting ripped off. Did you know that the Efteling is not a company but a foundation with a non-profit mindset?

Symbolica is well detailed, but I still prefer the other Efteling darkride Fata Morgana. :D

I want to go to Efteling now. This is jaw-droppingly detailed and gorgeous! The only way it would get any better is if I could understand what the characters were saying. :P
Don't be afraid to ask the employers!
And with the newer attractions, there is sometimes the english translation after the dutch, or it is written down somewhere. But most people are happy to tell you what is being said and you can always ask the people that work there. They are really proud of the parc and love to explain things.
symbolica is the first ride that really tries to take foreigners into consideration, the characters throw some English into their lines so you can get a grasp of what's happening. there's also English CC on the official onride videos.
When you are able to visit the efteling again let me know, i would be thrilled to translate everything to you as I am sure a lot of Dutchies would
Hi! I'm from the Netherlands and Symbolica is probably one of my favorite darkrides in the world. Here's why.
I'm going to compare the Efteling to Disneyland, and of course I absolutely love both parks but there are 3 things that I don't like about most of the darkrides in Disney parks.
1. The 2D decors.
The Efteling never uses 2D blacklight decor pieces. Disney does.
Everything you see in the Efteling is a real 3D piece (with a few exceptions) and that makes everything very immersive and magical.
Of course the Disney rides that use this technique are a little older, and for example Rise of the Resistance is in my opinion one of the best attractions in the world, but the Efteling has NEVER used 2D props; they have always worked with real art pieces throughout the entire park.
2. The screens.
Of course, the Efteling also uses projections and screens every now and then, but they never play a huge roll in the experience.
Disney uses screens all the time.
Don't get me wrong, there's nothing bad about screens. I just think it's often used in places where it isn't necessary.
In the Ratatouille ride you're basically just driving through empty rooms with screens, with some actual sets in between.
The screens just take away that feeling of a real experience.
3. The ceiling.
Just look up and you'll get it.
Symbolica doesn't do any of these 3 things.
From the floor to the ceiling, everything is themed.
Everything fits into the story, and the budget for Symbolica is also way lower than Disney's budget for most rides.
That's what I love about Symbolica.
I think the important part about screens/projections in the Efteling is that when they _are_ used, you either don't realize they are screens (like the cracking glass in Symbolica), or their thematic _purpose_ is to be a screen, like the screens on the wall in Baron 1898's pre-show. The latter of which interestingly also features projections which *don't* feel like screens!
I probably can't judge it be watching POVs, but it looks like possibly the most highly themed dark ride ever, though I still think Pirates of the Caribbean and Haunted Mansion (Maybe even Horizons though I never fully experienced it) are better in terms of story telling and classic-ness. But Symbolica, if it sticks around, will probably grow to become a classic, as it looks and feels so good, and I haven't even ridden it in person yet.
Pirates of the Caribbean has inspiration though, this didnt really have a story besides from the characters being a wizard, princess and king. i think therefore this is more creative still.
I have not visited any of the US theme parks, but have been on Symbolica; in line with all efteling attractions, the theming is top-notch. everywhere they can introduce theming, whether it is embossing of symbols onto handrails; fossils in the fake rock walls outside the ride, or even tiny bits of movement (like the liquid in the king's glass), they've done it.
I can only wish to have a park like Efteling in Singapore. It's such a truly magical wonderland from the videos I've seen. And the national pride it carries, it makes me jealous not to have it.
I visited both, efteling and US Singapore, and overall i would say US Singapore is the better theme park in general, efteling gives you this special magical feeling because they want to tell you so many stories, but in specific parts it's really overrated and some areas in this park look really decayed

I think one of the best things about symbolica, and other efteling attractions is the smell! The banquet room smells of sweets! The ride based on the flying dutchman smells of salt water! They have smells!
I went to the Efteling for the first time with my Dutch family, and as a huge American disneyland fan, I had no idea what the park was and I was highly skeptical until I got on this ride! I had no idea what it was and I legit thought it would be a boring castle walk through, and instead I went on one of the best dark rides ever created.
Don't underestimate foreign parks. Europe and Asia have quite a few top quality parks. And Efteling and Disneyland Paris are on very friendly terms. They take a lot of inspiration from each other. I think in theming and decor, Efteling has Disneyland Paris beat (can't say for the other disneyparks, I never went to those).

Well because you ended with the carnaval festival theme. Can you do a history on it?
To be exact, he ended with the music from Aquanura, the water show that opened in 2012, which filled in the place of the delayed hartenhof. But of course, the theme itself was carnaval festival!
They better make a carnival festival video it’s one of the most colorfull and happy darkrides in the netherlands and with a grat theme that gets stuck in your head for 4 weeks

'Every darkride has a place that isn't themed', they said. 'There is always a corner that isn't', they said. Now. Let me make this clear. SYMBOLICA IS THEMED EVERYWHERE. look behind you, you'll see a spider crawling through the cracks of the walls, a random pancake falling from the ceiling, and a flask of wine shattering. There is NO artificial ceiling to be found, ZERO clues that you're in a showbuilding, ZERO black curtains AND EVEN NO SPOTLIGHTS TO BE FOUND. they really hit the gold with this one. They should be proud. This is the best darkride in the world hands down. No doubt about it. Best kusic, theming, interactiveness, lighting, detail and animatronics. Animatronics arent the best of the best, but they are still very good.
Go to the efteling. Visit the park yourself and then come back. I'm rpobably underexaggerating
It’s so much cooler to base a park on timeless fairy tales.. then movies like cars and guardians of the galaxy
When the park opened, they really didn't have a choice. Back in 1952, fairytales and legends were the most well known stories they got. But it does give far less of a corporate impression, and I like that. I've been to disneyland Paris and Universal studios in LA, but there, I felt like they were constantly trying to sell me something. I was young back then, early teens, and I couldn't just go back there, so that was probably part of it. But I couldn't relax, I kept needing more. The Efteling never gave me that feeling.

It definitely holds its own with any of the Disney dark rides for sure. It is really charming and beautiful. Unlike many of the rides in Disneyland Paris or even a lot of the Efteling rides themselves which offer non-Dutch speakers any translations for the pre-show, I don't think guests will miss anything by not knowing the language. They put a lot of thought and care into this one.

That Dark Ride is really lovely. One of the best rides. Efetling is on a same level of Disney by creating an other world. But i am not a huge fan of those 3 tours, they are not that different and the interaction feels kinda pointless, i shut up thats nitpicky.
Nein. Zis is not nitpicky! I actually agree with you, the ride would've been even better (and longer) if they had just focused on one story. But the Gen Z kids like the interactive stuff, they need to see a video-screen at least once every 2 minutes or they start getting withdrawal symptoms, you know how it is :)
@@runi5413 I've ridden Symbolica a few times the last few years (two times last Monday) and they took the use of the video screen back a lot. The only time you really "use" it is in the mirror chamber when they make the picture of you. Also, they keep adding and changing little things to finetune it.

de Efteling is a great park where I live close to and been at for quite alot of times. But it's been a while since I been there. In terms of estetics / detail I think de Efteling is absolutely top-notch, It could very well possible be the best you'll find. But I must say, it's been a few years ago since I've been to Phantasialand in Brühl Germany and I really enjoyed that day. I liked the coasters and the water ride for adrenaline and I also liked the great food. I'm not sure what park I like most, but de Eftling has most youth / school memories for me.
This is by far the most stunning and amazing dark ride.

Hell, I'm an immigrant and I'm proud of the country for having it! Whenever old friends and family ask for the best place to visit when they're here to get the most "authentically Dutch" experience, I don't say Amsterdam or something, I point them straight to the Efteling. This park really offers the perfect introduction to Dutch culture and its people.
For someone who is a native English speaker, you did very well on pronouncing the names including Hartenhof! Only thing I found is 'henRy knoet' instead of 'henNy knoet'. 😜

Be sure when you go, that you go on this ride somewhere in the afternoon instead of the morning. Lines seem significantly shorter at that time since this is the ride you walk straight into if you follow the main path.
But Pardoes is pronounced "Pardus", right? At least that's what I heard in Symbolica ;)

I’m so happy you made a video on this amazing ride it’s definitely the best ride in Efteling and maybe all of Netherlands however I still love Disney and all it’s dark rides and I do agree that it’s amazing that in 2018 a dark ride can be Original and unique without a big franchise to back it up!
Tristan Beaux i disagree, Disney’s darkrides are amazing and maybe this is because I go to this theme park every year since 1 was 2. But I always found the Efteling dark rides (excluding carnival festival, if that counts as a dark ride) more magical as a kid. And still to this day need to go to droomvlucht en symbolica before we go to the other attractions.
Tristan Beaux while in Disneyland (I have never gone to America so al the experience is from Paris) I enjoy the dark rides. I am not drawn to them then any other attraction.
Tristan Beaux and last thing, while I do think symbolica is a amazing attraction I still think droomvlucht is just a tiny bit better and therefore the best darkride in the Netherlands. But again I have nostalgia for this park so take it with a grain of salt

Maybe good to add a translation of what Pardoes tells you in the final scene.... Just after his incantation: "cherish your fantasy, the source of all magic". That pretty much sums up symbolica for me.
And it isn't even my favorite dark ride.... That would be droomvlucht (dreamflight).
I will not pick any sides, but hear me out.
The droomvlucht ride system squeeks a lot. But I think that adds a bit.
@@MechaStan it's absolutely ancient at this point and as much as I adore it, I think it's getting close to the point where it no longer holds up. The animatronics barely move and I might be the only one who's bothered by this but the fairies all look the same. I'd love to see some different skin tones in there.
The most expensive, but totally worth it! It feels like the old fashion fairytales and fantasy films we grew up with. The details are so life-like. Makes you want visit the real symbolica.

It's very cool, the whole park is!. But if you ever go there, don't go in the weekends or during a (DutcH) Holiday or school vacations.

Multi million dollar company behind the movie hotel transilvania does a crappy dark ride in dubai.
While in Europe a park decides to invest money on a character with no franchise and those an amazing job in creating amazing sets and actual moving animatronics.

Personallh as a dutch person eftelkng is special as they are one of the few using there own characters flr darkrides but the new part is gojng to come i hyped
I think their Slogan they used for quite a while still covers the load: "Efteling: een wereld vol wonderen", which translates to "Efteling: a world of* wonders"
* or "filled with" whatever you prefer ;P
Before Pardoes they used Jokie from Carnaval festival, he and his red nose were the trademark of the park, Pardoes has grown in popularity ever since his introduction and he deserved to get a proper back story
One of the beautiful things about the park is they aren't afraid to try something new, which also has tendencies to bite them in the... rear side, causing delays and glitches but they will work hard to solve it and the end result is the best you might expect from a park with so much history
anyway, keep up the good work hope to see more of these... and if you mail with them they'll probably help you with these clips providing correct information who knows :P
There are many great things about the Efteling, but the music has got to be the most awesome of all!!
This is one of the most beautiful park experiences I've ever had the pleasure of experiencing, absolutely wonderful.
Great video - I rode this earlier this week on my first trip to Efteling with my other half. We were amazed, I'm so please we went. Symbolica for me was the wow factor, with all effects working and all round themeing. Great original idea with characters, no need for intellectual property!
One thing that is the best about symbolica is something you sadly cant show on video...its the smell when you are in the ballroom, it smells like sweet cakes and all that kind off stuff
As a Brit.. It’s my favourite dark ride if ever ridden! Closely followed by poohs hunny hunt in Tokyo Disney.
But Symbolica is just SO immersive! I’m now obsessed with the park and the Symbolica universe😅

As an inhabitant of the Netherlands I can confirm the Efteling to be spectacular. I've been there roughly 15 times throughout my life and have ridden Symbolica thrice. I think it's the best dark ride I've ever ridden, far better than dark rides found in Disneyland/Disney World, and it's a beautiful ride that's made even better with the story. Sadly not many international visitors can understand the story, however, the ride is amazing without as well. If anyone were to visit the Netherlands I'd highly suggest the Efteling for ages 4 and up. There are thrills in Baron 1898, Python, Joris en de Draak, Vliegende Hollander, and Vogel Rok, as well as great stories, amazing asthetics and detail. Truly magnificent and a must-visit for amusement park enthusiasts.

I am thrilled to see more and more people around the globe discovering the natural beauty of Efteling. My childhood park. - It is most spoken that Efteling is a part of national Dutch cultural heritage. Efteling is something in your heart and blood, workers say; as I used to work there. If you want to understand the pure and unique Efteling DNA you have to know the work of Anton Pieck - the original designer and executor of the park.

Rode Symbolica ten times on a recent trip. It's so hard to compare this to Rise of the Resistance because ROTR has the live action staff. It's a better dark ride but a worse overall experience. But you're not waiting two hours to ride Symbolica. So...
Symbolica is a fantastic introduction to Pardoe's world and I hope we see his area expand.
Oh and the pancake restaurant is a MUST visit.
I went to Efteling this autumn with my boyfriend for my birthday when visiting Amsterdam. We didn’t know what any of the rides would be like beforehand and I’m so glad I didn’t know. We went on the musical route in Symbolica and it was absolutely beautiful and amazing! It was so magical I still remember it so vividly it was like I was a child again living within the magic. I can’t wait to go back
As someone who is dutch and also a huge efteling fan (and a huge fan of the pardoes backstory which even had it's own nickelodeon series) symbolica is my absolute favorite ride in the efteling, the insane joy i felt riding that cannot be compared.
What is it with the 90's and whimsical jester characters? Seriously, I can't be the only one thinking of NiGHTS: Journey of Dreams or Pandemonium, right?
Maybe because this is like the Mickey from this theme park and in all honesty I agree that this fits completely within the theme of the park.
Pardoes has been the park mascot since 1989 and has since become the symbol of Efteling, like rex88moser said, he's like the Mickey Mouse of Efteling. I remember meeting him as a kid almost 20yrs ago. The character designs is how most of the Efteling characters look, I think they look very authentic and family friendly, totally fits with the theme of the park :)

I was a bit disappointed by Symbolica (given its expectations). Personally, I prefer the Droomvlucht or Fata Morgana. That being said, Symbolica is still great, but didn't match the overall darkness of the park itself as much as other rides. Great video!
Proud to be an Efteling annual passholder! Efteling was the very first theme park I visited when I was 2, 21 now and still love it! There's something truly magical, classic and authentic about this park.
It's so fun to see you make videos about Efteling! I've lived in Kaatsheuvel all my life, and Efteling has been such a big part of my life and I work there now too. And your videos are very informative and nice to look at! Would love to see you make some more about Efteling. :)
I remember when the ride began construction for the first time. I dont have a single memory of the place where Symbolica now stands being empty, but being surrounded by advertisment boards, a hill and it dirt being all around it. So when I finally got to see it without the boards, without the dirt, and a beautiful palace last year, I was shocked and amazed. I have been in the ride myself a few times, since I live in the Netherlands and its a 45 minute ride with the car, I must say it is an amazing ride you should check out if you ever plan on going to the Efteling. All the years, worth it, 100%

Symbolica is fore the Efteling is a great ride. However! If we look at the Fata Morgana and Droomvlucht, they are still the best of the park. Thay are unik rides and ride systems at the time. Droomvlucht stil is and the protoype ride system of Fata Morgana is stil present at the park know as Gondaleta. Everything screamed home made by the Efteling. Symbolica does not do this. This is wy the hardcore Efteling fans dont like Symbolica. It was so hyped and was so disapointing for us. You can only see that if you look very closely to the history, divelepment and grow up with the park. And the wurst part is, the hardcore fans know that Symbolica was plant to have a unik ride system that never was be done before. Now thats what the Efteling is standing for for us. Unik to the world. Home made and special to the industy.
@Gop rides like Carnaval Festival, Monsieur Cannibal, Fata Morgana, Droomvlucht, Vogelrok and Droomvlucht where always made together with manufacturers but they where always specialy or with a slide change made so nowhere in the world was even a slide copy of it or, it was completely new ride system. As an example Monsieur Cannibal is a simple thea cup ride but, with unique gondels and even with 3 extra gondels standing on the main disk only.
Theming was in the carefull hands of the Efteling and home made. Even the anamatronics we see in Droomvlucht, Fata Morgana and Carnaval Festival where home made and aged very well. I dare to say that most of them move even better than the new ones.
One thing is shure, The Efteling is still very very very good in making rides and giving them a deep story and intens theming. And thats the biggest thing that puts them infront of the trillion euro parks around the world.
I could not agree more with you. I wish they'd embrace Pieck's style again. To me, that's the soul of the Efteling. Not a stupid joker with an Amsterdam accent called Pardoes.

Its really cool how much detail was put into the world of symobolica! Pardoes had his own TV show set in ''Hartenhof'' before the ride was made. It was to hype up the ride, and to explore the world of Symbolica.
I rode it today for the first time! Had to wait an hour so I thought the ride itself was quite short. However its really gorgeous!

I live near the efteling and experienced the park from a little child to an adult. Everytime I visit the park I feel like a kid again. I've taken all the tours in symbolica and I discover new details in ride all the time! They handle every efteling project with so much care. And yes we are very proud of our beautiful park that we all visited as a kid and were amazed by the beautiful theming and storytelling!! I love how you mentioned how fans love this ride, as it was received negatively by both the guests and creators, who where dissapointed in it. Although people have grown to love and appreciate it for what it is.

I like the ride, but was a bit unimpressed by it´s "storyline" and the final. The buildings looks awesome, the observatory and botanical garden are outstanding, but something is missing for me. My personal favorite in Efteling stays Fata Morgana. (Also in Europe, together with El Laberinto del Minotauro)
I have ridden Symbolica before, I would say it is a very nice ride, especially when you are with a phew younger children, but it is also a good experience for older people. Tho I don’t think it would be the most fantastic for some kids that are 14-18 years old.
As a hardcore Efteling fan I can say Symbolica just misses the finesse that Droomvlucht and Fata Morgana had. The servant O.J. Punctuel was a brilliant character and the idea is quite fun, but the main attraction doesn't make the expectations a reality. It's not the artwork, it's plain lovely. Maybe a bit oversugared, but in comparison with Disney in a good balance. It's the interactive part in combo with the middle of the ride. The observatory is great, then follows a boring part, the interactive part is bad and most of the time broken, the finish is nice. It's a halfway hole. You don't have that with the other 2 darkrides. Fata Morgana is a continuum story with scenes that follow up quite well. Symbolica is just loose Chambers. How beautiful it is, it misses some things.
I think symbolica is DEFINETLY better than any other darkride in the world. If you look up down or back in other darkrides, you'll probable see no details, or just generic building materials. In symbolica however, you can see thousands of details, 360 degrees in all three axis. Jist amazing.
I think Efteling is amazing and worth a visit from America however to clear up some the opinions below Disneyland Paris and Disneyland Hong Kong has this park beat. However worldwide they don't even have a chance with Universal in Dubai and America not too mention the famous Disney World Resort with it's own island. Harry Potter Experience is king of rides.
Honestly? This is one of the worst rides in the whole park in my opinion.The story is just boring, the ride feels unfinished/rushed.When I was in Disneyland Hong Kong there was this ride called Mystic Manor that was WAY better story wise. I absolutely detested the whole thing. Rides like the Fata Morgana and Droomvlucht are literally a hundred times better then this snooze fest.
Any ride with multiple paths gets bonus points in my book
Being used to the Efteling, I can honestly say I have never seen another park where the theming is so top notch. Disney Paris pales by comparison, and even Europapark or Phantasialand can't quite match the eye for details.

I love symbolica, but droom vlucht (dream flight) is so much better, and honestly my favorite dark ride ever.
To me Symbolica is the second best dark ride in the world second to only the Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey, not counting its various iterations ofcourse.
Tbh the theming is amazing. Really on Disney level, but the fact that a proper story is missing, makes it feel pretty forgettable as a ride compared to the other attractions which is a shame.
Especially since the smallest attraction has a proper backstory. Why not the most expensive one?

I think the ride would have been better if it would have been hartenhof, I love the theming in the pancake restaurant but I'm not a big fan of symbolica. In my opinion droomvlucht, also in the efteling is better.
its amazing the only negative I have about the ride is that some animatronics are a bit janky sometimes (esspecially in the preshow where the servant is talking, you can hear his head click when he moves it up and down). btw when I went it was a 10 min wait time and around half of that was the preshow
I have to say Symbolica is the only non-Disney ride that I've ever felt is better than what Disney has ever done while riding it; it's gorgeous and the trackless element is what makes it superior.
Almost evry time i come to the Efteling i have to wait more than an hour in the symbolica queue. Even if the schools don't have holidays
The choices really are not nececery and ruin the ride. Its very beautiful but rides like Droomvlucht are way better in my opinion

Very nice, but you forgot to mention the earlier plans to use a special ride system developed by Vekoma. But that plan failed.
Tomtycoon i so badly wished that would have gone through, it looked really freaking cool.
I went on this ride a few months ago it was beautiful 😌. But if I have to be honest I still love the Droomvlucht at the Efteling more.
Beautiful about the Efteling is that there never is any attraction downtime
4:09 I coincidentally was there! We just booked on a random date and later they announced that symbolica was going to open then!
This ride looks like fun. Too bad the Netherlands is like over a thousand miles away.
