    The DR650GW is a top camera delivering on functionality and ease of use. It's a top choice for many luxury vehicles because of it's sleek style.
    While the video quality isn't amazing, that's common among dual channel cameras because of the added complexity. It makes up for it with an easier installation and great parking features.

    UPDATE: Nov 24th, 2016
    The Thinkware F770 is a better camera for most users over the Blackvue DR650GW. It has better functionality and video quality.
    See our review here: • Thinkware F770 Review ...
    Blackvue has improved the footage since this review as new firmware was released. That update increased the bitrate which improves details in complex environments.
    DR650S Model
    Since this camera was reviewed Blackvue launched the "S" model but from our research and Blackvue's own statement, little has improved. The video quality is nearly the same. Read more: www.blackvue.com/dr650s-serie...

      A119 right now for the value. I think the Blackvue should only be used if you want the cloud features. I'm reviewing the Thinkware F770 and I think it's the better choice right now.

    Have you reviewed the HKS DMR200D camera system against the Tinkware and DR650GW?

    • @Lam
      @Lam  7 лет назад

      Hey Hugh, no I haven't and it's the first time I've seen it. 20FPS is really low for a $500 dual channel system. The lack of specs and poor worldwide support (outside of Japan) means I'm going to pass on it for now. Looks like they are a motor racing company as well so it's either catered for that field or it's likely out of their range of expertise.

    Andrew I have the DR650GW and it works great. It came with ver 2.000, I am trying to upgrade it to ver 2.007. I know I did everything right to format the SD & drop the BlackVue data. But when the Camera comes on it says, " VERSION IS DIFFERENT" repeatedly and doesn't upgrade. Very smart camera! Is there an issue with upgrading from ver 2.000 it to ver 2.007. I really want the ability to add 3 Wi-Fi location.

    See I want dual channel for both of my vehicles.. but the thinkware 770 would cost me almost a grand... what do you think about the new blackvue dr470 2ch? I really want something with parking mode... or would a dual A119s system be better? (But then I loose my parking modes) thanks for the awesome videos you do!

    • @Lam

      That's a good question and where my next video will be looking into. I'm going to do some research on this issue. I'm confident two A119s will be better but I can't say that for a fact until I test out a bunch of dual channel units.

    Is possible to install and use the 2 cameras in reverses (switched) locations?
    For example, I want to install the reverse camera in the front because it is smaller. It seems to me, because it is smaller I can conceal it better. Thus, it may deter someone seeing it and trying to steal it when my car is parked.

    How was with the camera that was installed on the "rear view mirror"? Do you have a demo on the view captured from that angle (I was hit by a car on the left rear side of my car)? I wonder if placing the camera on the "rear view mirror" can capture that angle. Also, does the vibration in the car (when mounting the camera on the "rear view mirror") cause any problem w/ the quality of the video? Was the adhesive strong enough to stay on the "rear view mirror"? Please advise.

    • @Lam
      @Lam  6 лет назад

      Hey Peter, that was the Papago GS260 in another video. There can be problems with vibration depending on how sturdy your rearview mirror is. I would not install any adhesive based cameras like the Blackvue DR650 on the rearview mirror as it's not designed for that type of use and there will definitely be problems with the video.

    I've been using a Blackvue DR500GW-HD for 4 years now and I was wondering if they improved the Wi-Fi on the DR650?
    Connecting my phone to the Wi-Fi and trying to view recordings was a horrible buffering experience.
    Slow doesn't describe it at all. Even downloading to the phone's storage was slow. It would take 2 minutes to download a 1 minute file.

  • @ednappi7168
    @ednappi7168 8 лет назад

    As far as the quality, Blackvue allows you to adjust for brightness, contrast, and sharpness in the settings. Also, reducing the video quality slightly can speed things up. There is not a huge difference between hd and full HD. You can still read license plates. Not many cameras will be able to focus too well at night. I find that the Blackvue is better than most cheap dashcams. If you are directly behind someone traveling at roughly the same speed or stop behind someone, you can usually make it out just fine. Alex from blackboxmycar is excellent and also made a good suggestion to read out a license plate. The audio will capture it for your records later. I personally never bothered to hardwire my camera as my 4runner's DC power cuts off automatically anyway. Also for the rear tailgate problem, I found that mounting it on the rear interior light worked best (assuming you have one). There are some great reviews and tutorials from Alex and some videos of incidents I posted that can give your subscribers a good idea of quality. As for an sd card, the sandisk extreme 64gb works great. I tried a 128 but it was sluggish and jumpy. Once I changed it, no issues.

    • @Lam
      @Lam  8 лет назад

      +Ed Napster Sure, you can optimize things but that will not create a significant difference in quality. License plates may be properly exposed but that doesn't fix the problem with the low bittrate.
      I have not encountered a camera which has only a small reduction in quality when resolution is reduced. Blackvue could be the first admittedly, but it's unlikely.
      Since the firmware is loaded from the camera's memory not the SD card, improving the memory card will not change the startup time. Good choice on the extreme as they have much better reliability. Blackvue does includes a good card.
      I frequently talk with Alex. He agreed with my statements on this cameras quality.
      Completely agree on speaking the license plate.
      Thanks for the tip on the camera placement. :

    I currently have a front mounted DR500GW hardwired in my car. I was thinking of upgrading to the DR650GW and installing the 500 on my other vehicle. Do you think it's worth upgrading at this time, or should I wait for the next version of the DR***GW line? Would you happen to know if the mount and power cord are plug and play between the two, or would I have to remove and rewire to upgrade?

    • @Lam
      @Lam  7 лет назад

      Nope. I think the DR650GW series now should only be used if you need cloud. I'm reviewing the F770 right now and it's looking to be the better choice for a general purpose dual dash cam.

    I am interested in this model due to the cloud features!!! What are my options for connectivity?

    • @Lam
      @Lam  7 лет назад

      Hello Denise. With Wi-FI, you can connect to your Blackvue with a smartphone or tablet. You can also connect to Blackvue Over the Cloud via any home or mobile Wi-Fi hotspot. For a mobile hotspot you’ll need to purchase a separate device that’s hardwired to your vehicle’s battery. This will require a second data subscription which can be costly. Afterwards you can connect to your Blackvue camera using Blackvue’s App. You can remotely view footage from your camera and it can push impact notifications to your phone and also back up important videos to the free Cloud storage.

    I have a Dr6502ch. It is the model before the cloud app. I really like the new prox feature to mark emergency footage. Is there a firmware update that will convert my audio recording switch to the new emergency marking?

    • @Lam
      @Lam  8 лет назад

      If you're model doesn't support cloud software I believe you won't be able to get the firmware version with the switched prox sensor. You may be in luck and be able to do the upgrade if you're model was made after April 2015. Instructions here: www.blackvue.com/cloud-incompatible-dr650gw-2ch-models-upgraded-for-cloud-support/

    • @r.martin.l
      @r.martin.l 8 лет назад

      My DR650GW-2CH also is an older model and does not support new cloud functionality. To benefit from the manual recording I updated it with new FW once v2 was released. I just deactivated cloud functionality in either app, but even this does not seem to be a requirement.
      BlackVue notifies their customers in the FW 2.x download section: "Even if you install this firmware, you will be able to return to version 1.010 by installing 1.010 again." So if v2.x does not suit you, reverting to v1.x should be possible any time. Current FW is v2.004.

    You guys should do a review of the DR650S. It's an upgrade over the GW

    • @Lam
      @Lam  7 лет назад

      Hi Chad, we won’t be reviewing the DR650S. We think it’s nearly the same as the DR650GW. There are cosmetic changes such as a new rear lens cover and package. As well they have several software changes such as being able to rotate the rear camera’s video 180 degrees and turning the rear camera on and off. Video quality is nearly identical and that’s according to Blackvue: www.blackvue.com/dr650s-series-vs-dr650gw-series-comparison/
      In our opinion those are very minor changes and aren’t worth doing a new review over

      Hey. The Thinkware F770/F800/F800 pro models would be a better bet for high temperatures. We haven't tested the F800 yet, but the F70 was great. It has great reliability overheating protection.

      Hey Tony, spoke with a contact. I would go with another camera that's rated for higher temperatures. The Blacksys CH-100B goes up to 158F. amzn.to/28OEDww The Lukas LK7900 goes up to 176F. amzn.to/28VHJhy I haven't tested either but I've looked at a lot of reviews and it's been quite positive so far.

    Can not be rotated for "police encounters" otherwise a very accurate and good review. I can only agree with you that for the price, the picture quality is not as good as expected. Also, the viewer for your PC is not working very well with big displays since it can not be scaled properly. On my 4k display it is very hard to read the information on the viewer.
    PLEASE NOTE that the company (pittasoft) want you do buy their memory card for using with the camera. I have used other cards and they frequently fail to work with the camera. Pittasoft says it is because of bad quality cards, but I find that hard to believe. Anybody who have answers to that problem, feel free to holler at me.

    The rear camera attaches to the rear license plate.
    I bought this camera has a 20 foot cable from the rear license plate to the dash board.
    I am getting the rear camera housing which is steel and getting it chromed to match the rear bumper on my 84 Eldorado Biarritz convertible.

    So, do you have all 3 hooked up at once? The front, rear and IR? I have the DR750S-2CH with the Cellink Battery backup. I have a Range Rover Evoque HSE Dynamic Convertible and i want to have coverage of the interior in parking mode, but still have good coverage of rear traffic when the top is up and the rear window is fairly small. So I am planning on adding a 3rd camera.

    • @Lam
      @Lam  6 лет назад

      You can hook up all three at once, you might want to get a second battery if that's the case. I don't have all three hooked up, I simply tested them at different times. You would have to purchase a separate base unit as it can only have one rear camera attachment at a time.

    I have some questions. 1. How long ( in terms of hours) for the parking mode recording time? I understand it is very depending on your battery level, but in general, how many hours? and 2. how the size of the SD card they support 256GB? if the large data volume SD size is not supported, it may not be very useful. 3. How the parking mode by motion function? is the camera can be automatically activated if it detect some motions? the motion means a "real solid motion on the vehicles by a hit" or a "camera build-in motion detection" function by detecting any image movement in front of the camera? Any overheat report (or burning) on this camera in summer time for on-street parking? thanks a lot.

      Caleb Chu if you have the power magic pro you can set it between 6h or infinity. It supports microSD of up to 128GB. I set my park mode to 120hrs. I like you can add 3 hot spots to the unit and I changed the default SSID settings to for security.

    • @Lam
      @Lam  7 лет назад

      Hey Caleb, thanks for your patience.
      1) Parking mode time is dependent on battery but for my 51R I get 7.5 hours on a 12.2V cutoff (25-30%).
      2) Around 51 hours or so on 256GB.
      3) Good motion. Uses an algorithm, not certain how it actually works.
      I could answer more but the Thinkware F770 is a much better camera for most drivers using parking mode. Better video quality and it has better energy efficiency. I'd look at that camera first and I can answer other questions you might have. ruclips.net/video/yjEPJtQ5PdA/видео.html

    Hi. Great review. I have just had the DR650s 2ch installed and the parking mode seems not to work. UK installation using a Lukas LK-290. When the ignition is turned off the camera says "Powering Down" and flashes red rapidly for a couple of seconds. I have tried different settings and the usual dance-in-front-of-the-camera test and still no footage. What do you think?

    • @Lam
      @Lam  7 лет назад

      That's interesting, it should come on automatically when you stop. You can try changing the threshold sensitivity in the settings or you may have a defective camera.

    • @Lam
      @Lam  7 лет назад

      I just realized that you power your car off. Do you have it connected directly to your car's battery? It needs an external power source the capacitor inside lasts seconds not the minutes/hours you need your camera to work.

    • @philloneuk
      @philloneuk 7 лет назад +1

      Hi. Thank you so much for your replies. The LK-290 is the kit in the UK that is supplied to connect the camera to the battery, then cuts out if the battery drops below a certain voltage. I think is also has a low amp threshold. Going by what you have said I am 100% convinced the fitter has connected the "battery" wire to a circuit that cuts out when the ignition is turned off, rather than directly to the battery. I shall call the suppliers first thing and email the the fitter. Thank you once again and I will let you know the outcome. Phill

      Hi. Finally got a result. The car is a UK built 2015 Toyota Avensis, less than three months old, Business Edition Plus. It transpired that the always on port was incorrectly identified and thus wired up wrong. The camera is working fine and switches to parking mode after turning off, or idle, after five minutes. The camera passed the dance test! Now it will take time to set a happy medium for the parking G sensors as we seem to have a lot of gusty wind at the moment (you will understand this). Many thanks for your thoughts. I would highly recommend this kit. Love to all.

    I use this setup in my car that has curtain air bags. I would suggest that you not install the cable for the rear camera like it was done in the video. You don't want to interfere with the function of the air bag. It takes more time and more car parts to remove to get the cable tucked up above the head liner, but you'll probably thank yourself if the airbag is needed.

    I just got the Blackvue DR650GW-2CH/DR650S combo and had it installed a day ago and I'm already ready to send it back. The video and images are flickering, it takes forever to go into drive mode if it does it, the DR650GW only records for one minute intervals and the and the IR module is very unstable; it has a hard time maintaining its image connection to the main unit and the color problem during the day is aggravating especially since the unit was so expensive. I think I'm going to send it back and get something else.

    Great review! Had this model for about eight months:
    Pro's:Low profile size Well made? Installation kit wiring worked great (plenty of wire) even in my Tahoe.
    Con's:Be careful what you wish for - small size = no LCD. Gets hot and doesn't need Texas to do it. Coaxial cable = 500% horrid idea....way to fragile for a lot of installations, as well as installation or removal of camera from mount - good luck with that more than a couple of times. WIFI not dependable.Earlier models are not flashed for cloud app. You "might" be able to send it in for a updated flash. The company will have to cross reference camera info to see. The audio sucks after about six weeks of use. Sometimes clear and sometimes rararararara...what? The instructions have the depth equal to a post-it note's thickness - I lived in Korea for many years and most speak better English than I ever will - Blackvue, you can do way better at articulating information - own your product!
    My two cent - by the way I purchased two Lukas 9750s - not for stealth, but LCD, OBDII, lens filters, clear audio (if you like that), intuitive GUI, on board power monitor, free polo shirt.....the list goes on. Oh, and a very durable micro usb cable for rear camera installation.

    *I just got this camera and still learning how to use it. I was wondering if there is any notification feature in parking mode when the sensor is triggered. Like for example, if someone bumps my car while I am away. Upon returning to my car, I may not have noticed the damage people generally don't do a full walk around each time they return to their car. Will the dashcam have some kind of notification alert to tell me to check my videos because the sensor was triggered?*

      Hey Az, so if you connect to Wifi, you'll be able to see any events under the event page. If you connect through WiFi you can get notifications through your phone when it detects a shock. This will require either a WiFi Hotspot or if you're lucky you have WiFi where you park.

      ***** Thanks for reply. When you say WiFi, is from my phone connected to the DashCam WiFi?? I am a bit confused, because I have data as well, so not sure why I would need a WiFi hotspot.

      The WiFi range is limited, 10 feet at most. If you're looking to sit in your office or while you're out you won't be able to connect to your camera.

      ***** Oh I see. I just mean when I come back to my vehicle, would I be able to tell there was an "event". Just seems like a bit of a hassle if I have to connect to wifi to check my videos every time just to see if something has happened. If I notice someone ding my door a week later, maybe the video footage would have been overwritten by then.

      Oh right, so it creates a new event file and it stands out in the app. You can filter by parking event files as well to make it easier. However there can be many events depending on how busy your parking lot is.

    How long can it record in park mod ?

      Hello Richard. It depends on your chosen resolution and the size of the memory card you use.
      For example, using highest possible recording resolution on a 16GB memory card will give you around 2 hours of footage while using a 64GB memory card will raise that number up to almost 9 hours. You can check exact numbers on Blackvue website here:

    What happen if a vandal stole the camera? Are there alerts sent to your phone when the parking mode detects motion?

    • @Lam
      @Lam  8 лет назад +1

      +Mario Jalata You would missing a camera. The Blackvue doesn't look like a camera so it's not very tempting. In this video a Blackvue camera captured a thief rummaging through the car but it wasn't stolen. ruclips.net/video/iknugKfZvQE/видео.html
      There are alerts that can be sent to your vehicle if it detects motion. You can set that either in the smartphone app or the desktop program.

      Hey, on the newer DR650S they removed that feature and changed it to audio on/off (no idea why). On the DR650GW you wave your hand at the sensor.

      Do you mean that the newest recorded video rewrites the oldest one? If that's what you mean then the answer is Yes.
