I thought this video was about in the hoop quilting. However, it did catch my attention. I won't have to purchase anymore sticky paper! Just use the 3m tape. Now I wonder if this technique could be used for quilting a good sized quilt as well? I have a snap hoop I used for quilting, but this method could allow me to move the quilt along without having to secure a top hoop on top. Something I may try and if I do, I'll let you know if it works.

Great tip. I used to do something sort of similar when loading strips to embroider sashings, etc. Hooped once and carefully cut out finished piece. Using painters tape, attached another piece of stabilizer and embroidered next strip. Saved a ton of stabilizer. Love your idea too and gonna try it!! Thanks. I’m a new subber.

Hope all is well, haven't heard from you in a while - just traveling in different circles. Jeannie and I go back to the Singer XL1000 days - almost at the very beginning of this wonderful hobby.
Maybe this is good for a very small hoop, but I tried this with my 8x12 hoop and it screwed up (for a lack of a better word) the embroidery arm on my Quattro2 machine. The tape made the hoop drag on the embroidery bed. It has not been right since. Waiting to find out if it can be fixed. BTW, I have found great uses of this white 3M tape, but will never use on my expensive embroidery equipment again. And, yes, I did have the sticky side facing up. Not worth the little bit of stabilizer I saved.
I am sorry this happened. I continue to use this technique without difficulty, even with my large hoop. I am unfamiliar with the Quattro. Since you have removed the tape, be sure to clean the underside of your hoop with a little rubbing alcohol to remove the tape residue.

Most of the time I just float the fabric on the mesh. If it seems that the fabric will be a bit "wonky" and slippery I use glue-stick in the dead center of the piece of fabric.
There's no 3M tape called "extra sticky" that I could find by doing a Google search. There's only Heavy Duty, Extra Heavy Duty, and Performance Plus that would likely meet the "stickiness" aspect. Would you please provide the product number and exact name of the product you recommend, e.g. 3939 or 6969, etc?

Great idea. Used to do similar thing 25 yrs ago. Used the sticky stabilizer then only replaced centre piece ripped out. Your tape looks very good and tight. Ill go look in the hardware for some. Every savings made helps. I waste so much tearaway.

I am making a couple hundred embroidery blocks in the hoop, it has one layer of batting and then the material, would this be advisable to use with the batting?
It does work with batting, however, the batting fibers do not easily remove from the tape, rendering reuse limited. To be honest, for batting, I prefer to use the wide blue painter's tape in the same way. I can only get about 2 uses with batting because of the fibers. But it is cheaper and removal is fast. (BTW the painter's tape DOES NOT work with the mesh! Interesting, isn't it?)
I wonder, would this hold wash away stabilizer (mesh type, not 'plastic' type) for free standing lace also? Or, maybe not, since I have to use 2 layers mostly? Or can I float the second layer You believe? I have just started, and stabilizers are going fast...
I never use two layers of WSS because it is so expensive but I would also like to know if this method would work with it because I use such a lot with my In The Hoop embroidery. I just wonder whether the stickiness would start the dissolving. I'm off to experiment!
Your idea is great....but with quilt in the hoop or other embroideries where the design builds out you actually begin with hooped mesh. This techniques saves the expensive mesh by not having to add the extra inches for hooping! I hope that helps clarify.
Just wondering if you have ever tried this technique with larger hoops that take more stress from the needling. It's always great to find a way to save a little on stabilizer since hooping is such a wasteful process. You want a minimum of one inch overlap on all sides. Thanks for sharing your ideas with us.
I am sorry, What do you need to know? It is the 3M Extra sticky duct tape. I found mine at Lowe's. There are many duct tapes available. IF you need a number for the tape, please Google the 3M site for the name listed.
I'm confused...do we now need to tacky spray the top of that stabilizer to float the fabric on it because if you hoop the fabric it will be underneath the stabilizer instead of the proper way around. What am I missing here? Thanks for your patients with me.
After you stick the mesh you can use a temporary basting spray on your fabrics or you can machine baste the layers together as part of the design. I prefer the basting for a number of reasons. I hope this helps.
@@NonnasScraps Yes, it clarifies things well. However, I did try using your very method on the outer ring, It worked like a charm too. Because the outer ring hoop is thin, you need to secure by wrapping the tape around just a bit. Your method leaves the embroidery tight as a drum, smooth as glass with perfect stitches. Tried this technique today and it works GREAT! So glad I found your video. I always try to make my mesh stabilizer go as far as possible by sewing together my scraps. Thanks for the specific information regarding the 3M tape and the store information for Lowe's. It made finding the correct tape much easier.
I've been using this method consistently since learning about it. I would warn not to place the tape too close to the embroidery field indicated by the colored lines on the plastic grid. Apparently I placed one side too close and it caused major problems when my needle had to stitch through the tape. The thread shredded and I had to thread over and over till I got past that part. I finally turned the hoop over and tried to remove the edge of the tape that was too close. The method still works great.... My problem was user error!
I can not find this in white anywhere. I've searched online and can only find it in other colors. :( The heavy duty is 3939. There is an extra heavy duty that is 6969 but that is not what you have. However, even on the 3M website the heavy duty does not come in white. It only comes in silver. Totally confused but really want this tape. Not at all sure how to find out the number. Is it possible that you could check the next time you're in Lowes and get more info? That would be so awesome!
This is an alternative method for hooping. The tape is sticky and the mesh backing sticks to it. Usually you would place the fabric between the inner and outer rings of the hoop.
@@bwodom Hooping the fabric does it no good.I always 'float' mine on top. After all, if the fabric has been stretched by the hoop then the embroidery will be distorted when you remove it from the hoop. A little spray adhesive will hold the fabric in place. I was puzzled like you when I first started machine embroidery but soon realised my poor fabric was crying!
Nice tutorial, thanks for making it. I have a Bernina machine, and the larger oval hoop has a curved opening with a small margin between the hoop and the stitching field border. My first attempt at taping the underside had mixed results, but I will try again, 'cause I have A LOT of duct tape to use up! Has anyone else tried this technique on an oval hoop?
I finally got it!!! It had nothing to do with the hoop shape. I used blue painter's tape to lightly hold the hoop template in place. Then I centered my paper print out of the design to see how far from the stitch field its borders lay. I stretched my duct tape across the hoop on the underside to clear the design with room to spare. I used less UltraSolvy and had a fine stitch out. Thanks so much for pointing me in the right direction.

Hand sanitizer works better than anything I have used for removing sticky tape.

Medium tack double sided rug tape works well and is as economical.

I am a bit confused. How is the fabric sticking to the mesh? Are you quilting a whole quilt sandwich, or just a piece of fabric?
I have used this on other fabrics that are difficult to hoop with success. Just added a floating stabilizer. Thank-you!!!!

Float yes. The tape is sticky....don't need spray to baste!

I am new to embroidery. Do you embroider directly on the mesh then and later attach it to the fabric? Otherwise how do you get the fabric in there?

Why not just secure the same size mesh to the back of the fabric with spray?

I have done this with the largest Janome hoop...12" square without a problem. I do not have anything larger.

Will this work with tear away?
I have used it with tear away, however results will vary. Some tear-aways have a waxy coating that does not stick well.

I will look again at the inside. I am only able to get it in white at my local Lowe's. Give me a few!
