What if we had Pins on our Shoes instead of the Pedals? || Bike Hack Experiment

- Don't you hate shinners, too?
If you want any decent grip on flat pedals, you'll need nice metal pins on them. But while riding, you always know that the pedals are lurking to get your shins at any moment.
So, the only solution is to armor yourself with shin and knee pads, right?
...Maybe there's another one.

Street Trial is a mixture of two sports - Bike Trials and Street BMX. It gained popularity on RUclips in recent years through riders like Martyn Ashton, Danny MacAskill, Ali Clarkson, Duncan Shaw, Sean Watson, Fabio Wibmer and John Langlois.
Trials riding is all about riding/hopping over and balancing on obstacles. BMX Street is all about tricks and style. Street Trials combines the two and does tricks over, off and onto obstacles.
Videos like Danny MacAskill's Way Back Home, Imaginate, Inspired Bicycles 2009 or Fabio Wibmer's Fabiolous Escape showcase lots of what Street Trials is about.

Love the family guy pain style clip
Was about to say the same 😂 I love the family guy reference at the start🤣🤣🤣
Channeling Peter Griffin - “SSSSSSSSSSS.....AAAAAAAAAH.....SSSSSSSSSSS...AAAAAAAAAAG...
That jokes old
And Family dramatic music
Goodbye shinners, hello rubberised shin massages!
Ha! That's something I was planning on doing but it looks like you beat me too it! I tried something similar with Velcro in the fall.
Haha, I'd still watch your take on it! Was the "Velcro experiment" in a video?
@@TheUselessTrials I never made a video out of it. I recorded footage but it was not nearly as entertaining as yours to be honest. I posted a few stories about it to Instagram.
@@SkillsWithPhilThe failed-videos folder is painful...
Believe it or not, I thought about making a Velcro-pedal video, too. Was it that bad?
@@SkillsWithPhil Make it,I would like to see some other ideas,i have got old pair of sneakers, old pedals,so I would like to see some more work, and do it myself too
u should try magnets on the shoes and pedals
When he hit his shin I almost cried from the ptsd from all the times it’s happend to me
Perry Li after I watched that part I watched the Family Guy episode where he did that
Looked down at my massive scar lol
The shoes with pegs would be great for winter riding -- good traction when you need to walk across some ice.
Yeah i normally ride clipped but i have flats in winter, and this would be crazy on old hiking boots
Yes, on ice, bike tires have more grip than your boots.
Ingenious. Wooden stuff with snow is too slippery, add a bike to the mix and walking in flats in snow can be deadly
its 4 am and i dont even own a bike wtf am i doing

Finding reasons why you need to buy a bike
did you get a bike?
The original pedals on bicycles for decades were rubber blocks. They were ultra durable, even when cracked and weathered but they were heavy. Most of the problem was not the rubber but instead the manufacturing process which made it economical to simply have huge rubber blocks and steel bearing cases.
The quality of your videos are incredible
That was cool, dude!
Cheers!
Hey!
Just a quick disclaimer: This is only a fun little video about an idea I wanted to test. Not saying this is a perfect system. Not saying this would be a replacement for any current systems.
There'd be lots of things to work out for a practical version of both, shoes and pedals, that I didn't mention to keep the video short.
That's all. Have fun riding and stay safe, everyone. ;)
Start the business my friend. I don't even bike ride yet I'm sold on the concept
Great video!
I'd buy a product like that... Dude you crushed the cycling tricks... That kind of balance comes in handy for snow riding
It’s actually a great idea. You could have used golf shoes, they’ve used pins forever now...
Concept: pads that can be securely fastened to the bottom of riding shoes, and have studs on both the top and bottom of the pad, so that it will stay secure on the sole and grip the pedal. The pedal could be surfaced with an old riding shoe sole on both sides, as the soles are fairly thin to reduce bulk and allow it to be evenly weighted
Similar to this in concept, but the full length of the shoe www.amazon.com/Stackhouse-The-J-Heel/dp/B002BI9HWQ
I think it’s an interesting idea, but I like my riding shoes to work well as normal shoes to walk around in and not damage the floor.
I was thinking of a modular system. sliding in the bike bottom for riding , and sliding in the normal bottom for work / whatever
Peter Lang you could still do that with reg shoes
Is that peter griffin
For MTB it would also solve the problem of walking up muddy inclines. Love it.
Genius!! Love how original this is and its definitely an idea people of the industry should experiment with!
Wooow! That intro was golden! Awesome video! Keep it up! You deserve waaay more subs
That's a great idea! I'd buy them in a heartbeat.
Yessir! Great concept and great objective testing. I will have to make some myself!
I'd for sure try this setup. Thanks for the effort and video.
What a GREAT idea!!! I hate shinners, but dont want to clip-in either. I'd be all over this!
Yes, YEs, and YES! This is an awesome idea to fix an age old problem! Now, to get someone with and Industrial Design Degree or background to come up with the correct and viable design for for the Shoes and the Pedals... Ride On Man :-)
Love the quality of your videos! Keep it up dude!
Ahaha the Peter shin pain clip was awesome
I've rode for 25 years and I've never ONCE seen a single person with holes worn into their shoes from the pins. Good job!
I had this same idea a couple of months back, but I could never have done something as good as this video with it.
Dude... Hats off to ya... Gr8 idea... Excellent vid...
Bro i totally hooked on the "Pain"joke! Great ideas in the video man!
I can’t believe it! This is the answer! I don’t care about the shoes getting dirtier than normal shoes.. this rocks!
I honestly like this thought. Had enough stitches in my shins and would actually give this a go. Not for all my bikes though.
Sweet idea. Now if only 5.10 and a pedal company team up for a proper light and sticky platform pedal/shoe duo. Pins need to be easily replaceable/removable
Fantastic idea!!!! I loved the video and subscribed
I just want to say your are amazing at doing tricks
Actually an awesome idea. Nice one.
Sounds like a great idea, man!
Cool. Great idea. Pin on shoe works great on ground for perfect grip too. Ice too...
Love the idea. There's definitely some things to be worked out of it but wow man it's a good idea. Shoes are more expensive than the pedals that destroy them. Very forward thinking man 👍👍👍👍👍👍
Haha brilliant! Video is super well done too. Nice job 👍🏻
I like the idea. Great test.
tahts a really great idea!
i am really terrified of pedal slips and this would be a really good way to get back into bmxing! i’ll probably try it at some point! thanks for the vid!
Great idea! I’d buy some.
I can see this being a thing in the near future. Good job bro. Really like the idea.
Fantastic idea for being able to quickly engage and disengage with the pedals without the risk of getting some sliced up shins.
Obvious downside is that now the shoes can't really be worn inside anywhere, but this could still be useful for people who are purely riding and not stopping at any establishments.
I would 110% buy something like this. Having rode mountain bikes most my life the thing that holds you back is the thought of slipping. I had already sent my pedal into my leg many times and each time comes out with stitches
The intro !!! Good show sir
That's crazy, love your idea so much
Really interesting, top video!
I love it and think a well engineered system in this style would be great. And as a bonus you'd have shoes for walking around town when it turns into a sheet of ice!
Like it!! Great video too, humerous and intelligent, thanks for posting..not to mention your great bike skills!!
I’m amazed at how you jump with the bike like that.
That's ingenious!
Awesome video!
Super good idea just amazing I would love this !!
Very good experiment and good video 👏
As a lifetime addict of most things on two wheels I think you are onto something. I still have the flashbacks of doing this many times when I rode BMX. I think maybe the style of riding shoe would be better suited to something of a mountain bike / road shoe with stiff soles. I like the idea that the nasty part is on the bottom of the shoe and not the pedal
I saw this in my suggestion feed and laughed, then looked down at my shins, torn up from where I foolishly didn’t get stitches in my younger years..
Then clicked to see your findings.
It makes sense though, especially as added traction on muddy trails if you need to put your foot down.
The only downside would be that because the pedal couldn’t really have any cutouts it wouldn’t shed water/mud as easily.
I wouldn’t care about the weight, if they were twice what my current pedals weigh it would still be worth not ever getting shinned again!
I like the idea! You are a funny inventor.
Glad I stumbled upon your channel!!! Great vid
My shins are scarred and ragged from all the years of pedal tears, love the idea
What a great idea!
Cool idea mayn!
Love the video!
great ideas might have to try it myself
Nice idea for every Conditions
Love the concept. I think it’s great when people think outside the box on how to improve something. Only problem- we wouldn’t be able to instantly identify as mountain bikers by our shins!!! Lol
Pretty cool idea. I could see this concept evolving into a set of pegs that fit to the pedals very tightly, or "clip" in but in a way that would still allow you to get out of very easily... perhaps by a minor turn of the ankle or something simple like that.
Crazy thoughts, i know. Ah well, off to buy another set of power straps.
That's a really great idea!!!!
I think this is a brilliant idea
This is a great idea!!
Wow, i love your style of making videos! Maybe one day i too can do similar with my parkour stuff
great idea! Id try those out
Thats why i as bmx driver use plastic pedals from odyssey. Best pedals i ever used, they hold since 5 years. The metall ones from crank brothers etc. were broken after a few months.
Awesome video! :)
Great idea! I use clips because my fiveten's soles wear out in no time. If there was something like this in the market, that maybe even allowed to recycle old tires would be amazing.
Dude epic idea I might have a go at making some rubber pedals
*Interesting video!*
I’m so down for this!
definately would
love it bro keep it up.
This is brilliant
i love that idea !
Love the family guy bit at the start
Very well done video
Ha ha, same thinking here - now own some spiked trainers. Found soft shin-pads under my jeans were better, just enough to stop the nauseating skinning! Keep on innovating, love your videos 👍👍
Haha, thanks ✌🏻
Amazing idea
Very smart idea
Dude your a hella good rider
This is a great idea.
Brilliantly simple solution. Please, please, please, bike companies, mae this become a thing!
This is so Smart!
Your videos are so good
dope vid man
I thought of the same. Just didn't do anything about it. Great video. I would buy something like this
Product of the future!
Just subscribed... Great vid.
As someone that received 12 stitches on my shin due to a 4" gash down to the Bone from a pedal strike I'd buy this setup in a heart beat!
I'd use a spike system like track running shoes so you could swap lengths and shapes.
The pedal is a bit trickier but maybe if you made a pedal that was single decked (instead of double decked) and you could bolt pieces of rubber on top and bottom of the deck of the pedal. That way it's generally the same width and balanced. Or somehow upgrade those old school cruiser bike pedals where the deck of the pedal is rubber and they have threaded rods through the rubber bits.
Anything not too have to wear soon pads in the hot summer.
nice riding!!
That's perfect! I wear slide in shin guards inside my socks.
I think Lego need to get in on the act. Great video 👍🏼
This is a great idea and I would definitely buy rubber pedals and pinned shoes. I have had many trips to hospital because of deep lacerations in shins knees and calf's. Pedals suck.
great Idea...with just a little work i think this could really work. shoes could be make like track spikes to have replaceable spikes and just need a flat mount for the rubber
Good idea!
Also good thing doing it with carpet for barefoot riding is that one strip of carpet wraps around the whole pedal, rather than 2 peices of rubber and doesn't have the thickness issue.
If course rubber / carpet are for completely different riding styles though.
Barefoot riding??? that's a bit extreme 😅😅
I would totally buy a kit with shoes and pedals like that.
