The lovely irony of a new wave group with an all-electronic accompaniment singin "Rock 'n roll". The message is clear: the days of guitars and drum kits are numbered, this decade will be electronic.
thay took the song of garry glitter and made it great in the 80`s.I can remember the time when the electric sound was around. What a time to be around. The time. the clothes the atmosphere you will never exsperence again.
Great to see any video stuff of the original Human League before the management revamped it into a nearly totally different band. I like the other Human League too though.
often wondered why they took ages to be big because alot of their early albums had some fantastic stuff on them and so ahead of their own and the electro age.
There is now this book "Listening to the music machines make" by Richard Evans and is amazing how Ultravox/Human League, Simple Minds etc had to struggle to be big. There is the whole after-punk scene previous to the boom of BLITZ disco that made this transition to pure electronic music hard to get their slot. Many amazing albums and singles were still getting kept off number one by ridiculous traditional plays like Adam and the Ants etc...Love this performance and if I'm right, is from the one off EP "HOLIDAY 80". Consider also that Human League then we're splitting up and Ian Craig and Martyn Ware were starting the B.E.F. proyect and Heaven 17 at the same time..
This episode was just shown again on bbc1 over the weekend. Its the one that also features the first appearance from OMD. Neither had a song in the top 40 and I seem to remember Phil saying their record dropped after their appearance. Also in a perfect bit of timing, also on the show were The Undertones singing My Perfect Cousin which included the lyrics ... "His mother bought him a synthesizer Got the Human League into advise her Now he's making lots of noise Playing along with the Art school boys"
He sold the rights after his first little misunderstanding. I listen to a lot of foreign music stations and hear them occasionally, they obviously don't know!
@@gerarddoyle6376 well for starters, Martyn Ware and Ian Craig Marsh left the band to form heaven 17 leading to the iconic mark two version of The Human League and also in 1997, Gary Glitter got arrested on count of CP with his cameo in spice world being cut, then later being arrested in Vietnam in 2005, and then being convicted again in 2015 with him being released and then subsequently put back in jail this year
My fave track from the double pack was Dancevision. Played it to death in my bedroom! That would have been great on TOTP, see how the audience copes with that one.
@@kataka64 thanks, I couldn't figure out which one he was. Wikipedia doesn't have an image. So I wondered if it was Adrian Wright as he's not playing anything. Travelogue and Reproduction are their best albums, this cover is great too.

Way ahead of their time.
Man this is not their song. This is Gary Glitter cover. And the lyrics are excactly the same.
@@gjorgjitasevski3048 The point still stands though

the early albums were a real pain to listen

@@winterland2011 Yes you are right cos i was a fan of simple minds too the early stuff like love song they took ages to break through as well.
The first 2 albums were and are incomparably genius.
Still light years ahead of the 2023 Top 40. Shame. i expected by 2023 the charts would ALL be this good.
X factor and corporatism killed the music industry.

Genius at work.
Travelogue is the best album I have ever bought closely followed by I Travel Simple Minds.
Saturday night’s at Cinatra’s in west Croydon, back in the day
Gorgeous moment.
Their first TOTP as I recall?
mikem1966 yes and the one and only performance in that line-up. Sadly it didn't do them much good either, chartwise.

@@mikem1966 well that's purely by coincidence that the Undertones appeared on TOTP performing a song that namechecks the Human League. who knew???
Wonder if Glitter still gets royalties from this?! Would have thought Oakey never performs or allows it to be used now though..
Fuck Glitter.
This is class.
i dont think glitter gets royalties for anything now , i know no royalties were paid to the glitter band in the film joker

Funny how in 2024 Martyn Ware's hairdo feels way more 'challenging" than Phil Oakley's
Roland system 100 in the first frames - nice . I've got one ha ha. And also this single on a nice Oz version in green vinyl. Great version.
Ed Banger?
@@rachelar Nope
It's so odd that it took them years before they had a hit.
It was a constant auto-boicot. You can't be big if after Being Boiled you deliver something like Travelogue.
LOL, I bet they don't play this one live anymore!
Why?
definitely no way. covering a song by a paedo is just not right these days although obviously no-one knew it at the time.

Jeez, Goldfrapp have let themselves go, haven't they. 😂
Waaaaay before their time for sure.
MK1 League were the best. Martyn Ware should have stuck to playing his Jupiter 4 on this performance.
Ware is so over top that I do not wonder he was sacked soon.
LOL - He is so full of his own self importance on Facebook to this day !!
It’s the song , not the original singer
According to Phil this performance was supposed to be Marianne if the Band had their choice
Interesting. I'm glad it wasn't though.

Not Gary Glitter
The early Human League are brilliant here, too bad about the unfortunate choice of song.
It seemed like a good idea at the time.
Their version beats the pervo's original by a mile
iwasanangryyoungman should never have covered it , really doesn’t suit synth pop
