- The Nintendo Switch is Nintendo's latest console. Five years ago few predicted that the Switch would be successful. But now the Nintendo Switch library has 4 thousand titles with just under two thousand physical titles.
With the all digital options like Xbox Gamepass and Sony's Premium PlayStation Subscription, the Nintendo Switch might be the last physical first console.

Do you think we'll see more consoles like the Switch? Would you buy a Switch successor if it wasn't compatible with the previous console?
Given Nintendo's history, I'm kinda surprised we haven't had the Switch Pro, New Nintendo Switch, New Nintendo Switch Pro, New Nintendo Switch Mini Pro OLED Mario Zelda 2D Fortnight edition....
Yes because I’d keep my switch oled in that case.
I have a PS5 not connected online. I have not had one problem playing physical media offline.
I don't think I would buy the next Nintendo Console if it wasn't backwards compatible, (like the Wii to the Wii U). But, I expect a Newer and much more powerful console from Nintendo in the next year time.
@@SMGalactic yeah I don't think I would get the console if it wasn't. I think they'd shoot themselves in the foot if it wasn't.
To answer your question though, I think the Next Nintendo console might offer physical games, because Nintendo hates change, but I definitely think if it does it will be the last Nintendo console to offer physical games as the primary means of play. Unfortunately I think Game Pass will become the next thing, where you never own the game, but instead pay a monthly fee to get access to a cloud service that will periodically change out games.
Yeah I think that's what makes the Switch so attractive
And when that day comes and games go all digital I will stop modern gaming and just play older generations.
I see that future as the death of gaming. For me it's a if can't buy a physical copy then I won't buy.
The main thing that I dislike about a digital only games future is the lack of options. If you want to play a digital game for your PS5 buying it from the PS Store is pretty much the only option, they have a monopoly. I don’t think that’s good for buyers.
That sounds like a dystopia
Some games I think people are sleeping on right now: CrossCode, Blue Fire, and Moonlighter.
It does seem like physical collecting is becoming more of an afterthought, but I think consoles like the Evercade show there is still a market for it. I also wonder if the success of Limited Run Games might inspire continued physical functionality, if only to allow the opportunity to keep putting out pricey limited collector's editions. If not, I could still see a future where physical collecting evolves into something like that Fire Emblem collectors edition, with all the accessories of a game release, but without the game itself.
Yeah I think there will always be at least some form of physical media, but as time goes on it'll be more and more niche. Hopefully it will stick around for much longer than I suspect.
you should do non limited games that had a retail release, but still expensive like attack on titan, samurai shodown and street fighter final
Yeah if I make a follow up video I'll try to include those. Limited Run are boring but they're also the most expensive so I feel like I should include at least a couple.
Another good example is Xenoblade 2 and its expansion
I like these videos. I feel like there are some sleepers out there. Games that weren’t sold as limited runs and haven’t gone up in price, but if you look for them on eBay, there are consistently few NTSC copies for sale. Usually under 10 or so. Lumo, Stranded Deep, Donut County, and maybe This War of Mine, come to mind. Again, NTSC specifically.
Yeah there's tons of great games for cheap. Now is the best time if you're looking.
Got to say I had stern pinball cartridge here in the EU but quickly moved it on. The reason begin the game cannot be played without a initial download which makes the cartridge pretty useless for offline play down the road.
One game that is getting very hard to come by but is so damn fun is attack on titan 2 the final battle. It’s a great game and a sure fire game for collectors
It’s physical run was very limited and uses the larger cartridge size as it includes basically all the content.
Yeah if I do a follow up video I'll add that to the list
@@SuperNicktendo its like 200$ cib and its the rarest non limited run and non collectors edition
Still kicking myself for not buying the game when it came out.
@@buckroger6456 I only found out how much it has increased when I randomly saw someone’s listing on eBay. I won’t be selling mine though as I really like the game and if I ever sold it I would probably never buy it again because as much as I love some games I couldn’t justify paying silly money for them.
I checked eBay for a Darksiders Warmastered misprint, cheapest I found was an opened copy for $65+shipping, and new copies upwards of $150 😔😔
yeah -.- they come and go. It's hard to write these and also ensure that what I see on eBay is what people will see when I post the video.
The switch is definitely the last and currently the only console worth collecting physical media for because the game is mostly on the cartridge and unlike with the other two consoles the game is usually not even on the disc it's just a key to download the rest of the game and you need constant online presence so collecting physical media for the other two consoles is pretty pointless but still makes sense for the switch
I feel like every generous people keep saying how that system won’t be collectible anymore.
LR has Rendering Ranger for SNES up for pre-order. Do you think that will affect the ridiculous $1,000 + eBay prices for the Famicom version?
I don't think it will. Judging by pricecharting, there's only 1 sale a year. The reprint is great to have but if you're a hardcore collector, you're probably going to want the "original" and it doesn't look like these are in high supply.
I doubt Switch will be the last physical games console. Digital games usually only sell well if they're cheap, and the average gamer feels if you're paying $50 or $60 for a game, you might as well get the physical version. Plus will the popularity of collecting physical games, (even old ones are getting pricey) it seems the demand for physical content is still in tact, and much like how vinyl music records have come back into fashion after the CD and digital music boom, I'm sure we'll still see physical game discs/cartridges.
Idk man I've been collecting for decades and seems like the print runs are waaaay shorter and the inventory at stores is waaaay less I used to wait for things to go on sale but lately most non AAA games will disappear from shelves entirely in 1 year. Then the resellers will increase the price a ton while the digital is dirt cheap. It's sad... Indie games are the worst, they dont release physical day one, then by the time they are physical they are $5-10 on the digital stores and $30-$50 for the vanilla copy from limited run games/whatever.
All that to say I think the end is coming 😂 slow rual internet might be the only reason now to keep physical, well and collectors.
Even if it stays physical it'll probably just be a redeem code.
At least with vinyl and CD artists don't really like Spotify so selling direct to consumers and getting more money is ideal. But when Sony and Xbox own the console and the marketplace and studios, they might be more inclined to box out retailers and cut down on that pesky re-sale market.
Collecting all games for the Switch or any modern console with several thousand titles seems like a battle with insanity.
Yeah I see so many people with complete sets so far and I'm just baffled.
@@SuperNicktendo wow! That's crazy! Hats off to them! I think I'll stick to my goal of N64, non boxed. Lol
Off topic but how is your chair? Has it held up quality wise?
I assume you're talking about my Eames lounge replica. It still is pretty fantastic. It's has gotten more comfortable as I break it in and it looks just as it did when I bought it. I do wipe it down with leather wipes to keep it clean.
Pnpgames has reprints of Astral Chain, Bayonetta 2 and Xenoblade 2 for MSRP at least for now
Should have incorporated super rare games releases. They are going to be really pricey and also have some great games for collectors. Flynn: son of crimson and evoland are two examples of great games
What do you mean 4000 games?
When you are at the eShop.. sort by Software.. Available now. It’s well over 8000.. and that doesn’t include DLC, Demos, or Upcoming Releases.
Astral Chain is the next earthbound
I wouldn't say that rare but definitely will be like $150
It would be nice to hear if 2600, Intelivision, Colecovision, Odyssey 2 and Atari 8-bit cartridges will always be penny stocks in collections.
I have a Switch but rarely play it, so I tend to collect more for PS4, I like knowing my PS4 games are supported if/when I get a ps5.
Same. Ever since I got my ps5 I've been playing PS4 games that I missed out on
So I chose the 6800U win max 2
From my experience, if it's a game you want and aren't sure if the price will go up or down, just buy it. I've had a few PS4 games that I held off on only to see the price move up and a plenty that I did buy for cheap that have gone up in price. I have been going nuts over the summer buying switch & PS4 games.
I don’t know why people use price charting, it’s so inaccurate. I have ikaruga and check the price on it regularly as it’s one of my most expensive games. I haven’t seen it less than 150 plus shipping for years now. Most of the time it’s around 220.
Pricecharting uses sold listings so what you find on eBay for sale might not match which is why I usually check eBay before making the prediction as well. Pricecharting shows the last sold copy was back in October for $90.
The price isn't as relevant as the historic trend to make future predictions. I just checked and there's one for $160 + shipping currently with the rest listed for an absurd amount.
Obviously everyone's budget is different so I don't usually say what stuff is worth and instead say the price will go up, down or stay the same. Hope that helps.
I got so burned by Katamari, i paid 70 to get it off Amazon when the rumor went around and then it dropped to $10 😅.
My wife had bought it for Christmas before anyone discovered it was getting hard to find. Should have sold it lol.
More then likely the last collectors console, also the worst to collect for. Those limited-run games make it super expensive to get a full set. And the games that have extensive dlc required to play is not worth it to me.
I think whether something is esrb or different region of the game i dont think it wont matter considering i buy lots of japanese titles most due still have english and sometimes it just better and have less censorship vs what an american title might have and are generally is cheaper
What about evercade?
I'm sure that Nintendo will stick with some sort of media to put games on. If everything was 100% digital, there would be no point to getting a console. Just play on PC or Steam Deck. And as for buying games when they first come out for the switch, it's probably best to do so if you want the game. I have so many 3DS games that seem like they were only printed for a short time before finding a new copy would have been impossible. And Nintendo does not like to reduce the price on their games historically.
Skylanders on switch doesnt need the portal, thats probably one of the reasons why its more valuable than on other consoles.
Five years already??
I know right? Time flies.
I absolutely think Nintendo will hold down the physical collectors market with new consoles but I wouldn't bet on anyone else
Hope not, I would probably stop with video games altogether if they stopped physical games
Just go all retro if that happens. I'm always out hunting for retro games, gotta be prepared for that dark day.
@@buckroger6456 I already have a thousand video games. Definitely enough for my lifetime
@@BoboBreez you are more loaded then me 👍. I just hunt for retro, PS4 and Switch, I have zero plans of moving to this new gen.
Physical first!!!
Companies don't want you to own your games and want you to subscribe to play or re-buy newer versions of them each new console release. Nintendo is the last platform that people rather buy physical on hopefully that won't change even if Nintendo themselves want you to go digital to follow the norm.

It's sad when playstation games like crash, spyro, medievil, and parappa get better remake even built from the ground up remakes and mario 64 doesn't
No kidding! Odd cause all of us have been asking for a Mario64 remake. All we want is updated graphics and a modern camera.
@@buckroger6456 the ds version exists but ehhh
Nintendo is a decade behind when it comes to online infrastructure, that includes there online store. I don't think nintendo will abandon physical any time soon.
Let's hope so!
This made me laugh cause Nintendo was already behind with the 3DS and Wii U, but when the switch came out they went back 10 more years lol.
I sometimes wonder if everyone who’s obsessed with owning video games sees how unimportant this shit really is. I remember buying 100s of DVDs back in the day because I love movies. Now? I have a hard dive that sits on my desk which I can access every single movie I could ever want with a click of a button. What I want is that same thing with video games. Digital is honestly just better in almost every way. The one benefit, being able to resell, has never been a factor for me as I have never sold a game I’ve bought.
Well part of the reason they can be way rarer in certain cases than most DVDs, also alot of games are never rereleased, also collecting DVDs can be aimless since it would be infinity more difficult to collect any amount of DVDs like 10,000s not to mention they all have been re-released 10 times on the same DVD format and then 3 times on blu ray, and then another time on 4k blue ray.
All that vs like for example 338 N64 games, it's a lot easier and more obtainable.
For me, at least part of the desire to have physical games is because you can usually always play them no matter what the parent company does. Like with Ubisoft pulling Assassin's Creed from Steam for example. In this case you can still play the base game, but with some of these games once the servers are gone so is the game. When the game replies entirely on a physical release (mmos not withstanding), if a digital copy ceases to exist for some reason, then you still have a copy. Granted, Emulation has taken care of 99% of that. That said, there's also some of us that just like playing on authentic hardware with a physical game.
@@MattG4033 You’re looking at it from a collecting standpoint. I’m talking from a practical one. Like, does anyone really want to play every N64 game ever releases? That system, even with it’s small library, is littered with shit. In addition to not being a collector 1st, I’m also anti materialistic. We use to HAVE to own physical games to play them so that’s what I bought. Now? It’s moot. I still buy some games physically but only if I can get it for the same price or cheaper than digital.
@@WayOutGaming Two things. First, like you said, there is almost no game I can think of that you cannot play if you put your mind to it. The advance of microprocessors, ODEs, and flash carts have fixed every problem we had in the past. As for the “playing on OG hardware” argument; if you were at my house and I handed you a Wavebird, you would literally not be able to tell if you were playing on my GCLoader, through one of my many emulators (without up scaling), or my actual GC discs. It’s elitism. Wanting to feel special having these pieces of plastic.
Here’s the reality: whenever you start to care more about aesthetics how your game room looks, you by definition are taking attention away from the games themselves. When I was gaming back in the early 90s, I was one of the rare kids who always put his games away. All my friends would just have them scattered across the floor. We didn’t give a shit about boxes, manuals, or the labels on our carts. We cared if the game was fun. There is an ugly side to retro gaming that I’ve become acutely aware of and it’s kinda sad. So many youtube videos are now about the thing rather than the thing that gets you to the thing. In the end, it’s all 1s & 0s.
I still have every game I’ve ever bought dating back to 1988. But come on, am I really going to bother retro fitting my SNES to work on my 4K tv (or even more insane, dedicate space in my tiny NYC apartment for a CRT)…. or am I just gonna boot Super Mario World on the NSO? I really encourage people to ask themselves, what is it they really care about? Is it the games or owning a bunch of stuff relating to games?
If you pirate everything, sure. If you're going to get games legally, you're in for a rude awakening. There's already lots of examples of companies meddling with movies, TV shows, games after release, when not outright removing entire products from the market (happened recently with Ubisoft). I am NOT looking forward to the always online, everything streamed future we're going in.
There is no way any major console ever completely gets rid of physical capability. There is a large portion of the world that cannot get reliable internet.
I don’t get Celeste being on this list as it was Limited Run. Not exactly a major title.
It's one if the more expensive non collector edition games on the Switch.
@@SuperNicktendo Right but it’s not exactly a traditional commercial release. It’s expensive because it was intentionally low print.
@@leeartlee915 yeah. People suggested I included it so I put it in. Just because it's a limited release doesn't exclude it from forecasting and I try to limit those in the first place
@@SuperNicktendo If people suggested it I guess that makes sense. It just doesn’t feel like the other list you’ve made for older systems. But that’s just me.
@@leeartlee915 well not too many limited Run retro games. Easy to exclude those. The more modern the system the more they seep in. They're still collectible. Also these were open preorder so it's closer than just selecting a game with less than 5k copies
I really hope Nintendo next console can repeat the Switch success cos if their next console failed like WiiU it might be game over for Nintendo especially now with how popular steam deck is among core gamers. Nintendo is getting destroyed by ps5 xbox series steam deck and mobile phones. Bleak and scary time for Nintendo fans indeed.
The steam deck is a machine for enthusiasts. In terms of the larger market its basically a non entity.Similar devices have existed since before the switch came out.The steam deck was just the first to be sold at an affordable price.
Also lmao at nintendo getting "destroyed" by next gen devices.Literally the only next gen machine that outperformed the Switch during the holidays last year was the Xbox Series S and that's in spite of the switch being on the market for several years.Nintendo is doing better than fine rn.
Literally all they have to do regarding next gen is release it within the next year or so,offer 99% backwards compatibility(something Furukawa has alluded to during investor meetings),and iterate on the basic Switch concept and they'll be fine.
It's sad when playstation games like crash, spyro, medievil, and parappa get better remake even built from the ground up remakes and mario 64 doesn't
