    Thanks for watching everyone! Just wanted to take a moment to clarify something: VC is actually pretty solid. By my own reasoning, I'm compelled to say that paying 18$ for a mod seems absurd when we get so many on a similar level of quality for free. I also tended to be more critical of VC precisely because I paid for it and expect more as a result.
    But the truth is, if modders were fairly compensated for all of their work, most mods would retail at a similar price.
    In essence, VC as a DLC is actually pretty decent, it's all of the FREE mods we must be grateful for. Huge thanks to the modding community for all of your work.

    I bought Viking Conquest way before I even knew about mods for the game. It impressed me how they upgraded the battle ai etc, and as a history nerd, I adored the historical setting. But yeah, now that I have discovered the immense amount of high quality mods for the game, I must agree that, in all honesty, while Viking Conquest is awesome, it is not necessarily better than any of the high quality mods.

    Quick thing about sea battles in Viking Conquest.
    Your Looting skill determines the chance of gaining ships after battle. If you rock 8+ looting, you're almost guaranteed to capture a ship after every fight. Late game, its one of the best ways to actually amass funds relatively quickly (other than wool trading, but that takes you usually to far from your kingdom.) The areas of the map that spawn alot of sea bandits are great farm areas for money making.
    Also, there are subtle tactics you can use to make Sea combat a lot more tactical. Holding your ships to and having them board 1 enemy ship, maximizing your numbers advantage on a single ship-on-ship action, or attacking 1 enemy ship from 2 sides, staying behind a friendly ship so the enemy agro onto them and you flank. Using troops with high damage javelins to cause casualties from your ship helps too, since troops have 4x javs stack amount on ships.
    I admit the ship AI isn't great, and you still take more casualties than on land, but if you use T2-T3 units to minimize economic losses, you're making a lot of money selling raider warships this way. Also you can keep the Oak ships that you find. So thats around 3.5-5k~ average per battle on ship selling alone. Larger bandit parties will give you larger, more expensive ships.

    • @Voult_Bioy
      @Voult_Bioy Год назад +1

      4x javs also applies to the player, so you can basically dish out 20 enemies with good throwing skill alone

    as someone fairly new to modding and someone that isn't the best with computers or the smartest.. 1 thing you overlooked is the ease of access VC has over the mods.. as well as the trust factor. direct from the developers. no discord, no 3rd party website, no outdated steam workshop mods, its guaranteed to work. ( at least in theory ) .. I know some mods that are free are easy to install ( Especially if they are on the steam workshop and are up to date ) but some mods are really hard to install.. like warsword conquest ( at least for some of us ) .. not saying it justifies the price tag or anything ...

  • @aeu569
    @aeu569 2 года назад +16

    Sorry but this is laughable. Saying that boats are prohibtively expensive means you have not experienced VC at all. There are two strategies available: farm some money and get a fast ship. Load it with SAILORS not soldiers. They are good enough to fend off some pesky vikings if massed, but thats definetely the last option. As someone with a fast ship and sailors your main instinct should be FLIGHT. A skeid with 70 sailors will be flying across the north sea! Now if you really want to battle at sea get either a) several snekkars, skeids, generally thin, long ships and load them with skirmishers, then stay the fuck away from enemy boats and pelt them to shreds with stones javelins and other pointy things, or b) get a beefy broad ship with a mix of beefy vikings and sailors - the latter do the sailing cause broad ships are slow af, the former do the boarding and fighting. Fighting hand to hand on thin racing skeids is inadvisable because half your important shock troops will fall in the water lol. At some point you will fall for sure.
    There are two awesome features of boats that often get omitted by boat virgins. First, even a cheap ass byrding, around 5k in good condition, is fast enough to evade vikings and since there is no cap on space you can access the best trade routes for free! For early game it is a gift from Woden. 2) boat sieges. Yes. Boat sieges of ports are awesome because SKIRMISHERS have unlimited ammo while on boats. Even the pc will auto replenish so bring your best javelins. Stay within range but dont disembark and you can SHRED the enemy defences. Sure, they have shields, but soon all will be broken with javs and then even sailors en masse can deal with the rest. Boats make the game because they cause light troops to be massively op and justify an all light troop army if your goal is coastal raiding or piracy. Make your camp on an island and you are now [in the voice of Sterling Malory Archer:].... A pirate king!

    • @TerryDuke
      @TerryDuke  2 года назад

      Dude, you're making my points. Why should the sound move be to be fast enough to flee? Why can't I just easily mass a large fleet of affordable ships and competent soldiers to go on massive sea battles? And most of your strategies sound more like exploiting the bad AI and gameplay loopholes than actually doing what the game intended. Your landing strategy isn't all that different from lining up archers in front of a wall and killing the soldiers standing at the choke point. Except you're doing it on water.
      I mean if that's your thing, by all means, enjoy! But what makes warband great in my opinion is the freedom we get to do our own thing. But VC brought in a feature that is very limiting in the choices we get to make with it, realistically speaking.

    • @aeu569
      @aeu569 2 года назад +8

      @@TerryDuke The reason why amassing a fleet of affordable ships and competent soldiers in the game would make no sense is because it was historically NOT affordable! Traders relied on speed and evasion because having a massive, armed fleet would cut in both the cost of running the freight AND limit the size of cargo that you could take aboard. The most lucrative option is to use smaller boats with skilled crews that would successfully sail dense cargo (high price, low quantity) across seas swiftly and safely. Having the capacity of fielding a large warband (lol) and fleet, was something within the capacity of a king or a chieftan, not a random dude starting from scratch. If you spend a while learning how to make quick profitable trades you will buy a decent used boat soon enough. And more than one too! Or just pay other people to get shipped across from say Norway and source your soldiers locally in Danelaw :D that would probably work to some extent even in reality.
      Having to make multiple trips to unload your troops was a thing even in antiquity! Which makes sense here in game because of the troops quartering option. Move part of your overall army, make a beachhead, then go back and get the rest. This. Was. How. It. Was. Done.
      This is EXACTLY why Britain has remained relatively "unconquered". Very few such landings as you have described have been done historically, and they were usually quite costly. Therefore what you would see around the time when the game is set would be lots of small vessels trying to stay the f out of trouble, or small raiding parties who would ravage the seaside.
      Also it stands to reason that you would have MORE ammunition available if you can just line the bottom of your boat with it.
      The very beauty of VC lies in the fact that it forces you to work within the confines of the time period. Back then you'd be a raider, a trader, or a fisherman. Seeing a fleet of the likes of Harald Hardrada or William would be for many a once in a lifetime experience. Hell, the fleet of Hardrada was about 300 ships, carrying 11k troops. Meaning you'd pack around 40 per ships, plus basic provisions. A skeid in game can carry 70... To get a decent size army you need 2-3 ships. Thats for harassment. To conquer you'd need 8-10 with several bands. This is realistic because in reality the islands did not change hands so much specifically because attempting such a landing was prohibitively expensive.

    • @TerryDuke
      @TerryDuke  2 года назад +4

      @@aeu569 Your argument of VC being good because of realism is very arbitrary and subjective. If I need a history lesson to appreciate the drastic limitations that a game offers, then limitations aren't fun. May I remind you, we're talking about the only mod ever to receive FULL technical support from the developers with the sole purpose of making the best product possible. And the biggest selling point of VC is greatly restricted because... the Norse were restricted in resources and logistics historically? And that matters for the game how? I'm going on killing sprees, cutting heads off from armored opponents while at the same time having a javelin stuck in my shoulder, yet I must bow down to reality when it comes to sea battles?
      This is a broader argument that I would make for any game and I say this as a history buff: gameplay should never be compromised for the sake of realism (looking at your RDR2).
      I mean, what if you could just have a huge fleet as easily as you can build a land army? And what if you could sail it everywhere you go, without limitations? Wouldn't that be fun? What would be so wrong with that?
      Warband at its core is a game that allows for that kind of freedom. Brytenwalda introduced realism as a means to make the game challenging, but it was still an option that can be disabled if that's not your thing. You're not gonna convince me that my review is wrong because I "played VC wrong". I'm playing VC like I'm playing Warband, and expecting the same freedom is not unreasonable.

    @SilverSoulxd 10 месяцев назад +1

    I played Brytenwalda many years ago, I didn't play it much tho, the map was so big and you had so many things that it was way too complicated for my own taste. Then I played Viking Conquest around 2018 and I really enjoyed it, as far as I know it's the only game/DLC of the Mount and Blade series with a story. The story itself isn't that great, since there is no voiceover, just some texts and events (some looking like mini cinematics) but I would say it's worth it if you buy it on a sale. Even without the story I would say is a great "mod", I enjoyed the trading, raiding, battles and the atmosphere in general. If you have Bannerlord I don't know what to tell you, if you started on Warband then get it, if you started on Bannerlord directly this will probably be kinda outdated for you.
    Something I forgot to say is that this "mod" actually made the spears relevant in Warband, before this "mod" the spears had so low damage and were so easily blockaded that it was kinda pointless to use them, either you or your troops. Here, on the other hand, the spears are really efficient on troops with a shieldwall and using one yourself is actually enjoyable and useful (other mods based on viking conquest have taken advantage over this, like A World of Ice and Fire).
    Overall I would say give it a try, always buying the DLC on sale.

    One thing to say about ships. Sea battles can be very good or bad for you depending on your army composition. Just like lords have different units taking them to rhe sea can make it easier or harder to beat them

And they are to this day still working on the DLC and updating it. Its not expensive in anyway, Video games are an art form and take alot of time and dedication to make.

    A rather biased review, which is full of skill issues.
