    I really miss the old Marshal mechanic, it was simple and yet intricated at the same time, the fact that a lord was assigned as marshal via voting or just because the king liked him enough meant that it could make or break the kingdom during a war. In BL, you can have tier 3 clans assembling lords from lords from higher ranking clans and even the rulers clan. It’s a great feature but I feel like it’s given way too early. Maybe a fix would be you can only assemble lords from an equal or lower tiered clan.

    Surprised I didn’t really see it mentioned, but another thing warband did better, which bannerlord just completely scrapped are claimants. They just don’t exist. One of my favorite ways to play warband is supporting a claimant and becoming the power behind the throne, and they could have been really cool in bannerlord with the addition of the influence system and new kingdom interactions.

    • @TerryDuke
      @TerryDuke  Год назад +14

      True, though in Bannerlord, the main replacement for this is the story campaign, where you can either team up with the other imperial factions against everyone else, or go to war against all imperial factions. It does create an interesting setting that much like claimants, make it possible to single handedly get lots of fiefs. It'd still be cool if claimants were brought back though.

    Each companion should have a quest they give you of their hopes and dreams, or wish for revenge, that if you complete with them, will increase their level, skills, and relation with you by a massive amount. The player should also have a goal from the start that works the same way. That would give every playthrough an rpg-like story besides the typical gameplay.

    • @jooot_6850
      @jooot_6850 Год назад +14

      That would be really cool and would make companions feel more like companions.
      Not so sure about setting direct objections to the player character, though, unless maybe they’re allowed to choose what their overarching quest will be? For example, if they pick the path of the conqueror they’ll gain skill points for each city and castle taken over at the cost of less natural leveling from defeating enemies? Something along those lines to make the player character focused on their respective goal at the cost of being more balanced overall.

    • @grainassault4844
      @grainassault4844 Год назад +9

      @@jooot_6850 In Crusader Kings 2 the player character has one Ambition, that gives a bonus of Piety or Prestige when completed. Easier ones, like getting married, give only a little, but fulfilling grander ambitions has a higher reward. When you finish an Ambition you can select another one. It gives a little more structure to the mainly sandbox game. Bannerlord already has quests, but it hardly has a story, even in Story mode. It could work like that and grant Renown, traits, or something similar, but imagine if the player character could randomly or intentionally select a lord who has wronged them in the past? Imagine if such an event, in backstory or emerging from gameplay, put the player on a quest of revenge that gave their character concrete benefits to complete, either by forgiveness or action? Wouldn't that allow Bannerlord to feel much more like a role-playing game rather than purely strategy?

Then maybe you'd have to do some shit like Unite the Land to your Kingdom? Sounds a bit Main Quest-y to me. You could even have a Bandit that killed your parents to start your quest...but twist, you have to team up with him to save your brother and sister. Then they could give you some kind of "Forgive him or kill him" option? Might be cool, just sayin.

    Yea, I love Bannerlord for its graphics and improved settlement management stuff, but the game ends up somehow feeling even more lifeless. My last playthrough was a 200+ mod sandwich with Realm of thrones as the main one. It was pretty amazing going to war on a dragon, commanding troops from the sky, but then I'd get somewhere new, talk to someone, and run into the same lifeless text over and over. Viking Conquest for Warband is probably my favorite campaign as it so beautifully mixed a story with emergent gameplay that I never new if someones reaction to me and quest was part of the story or not, and then all the times your companions say something, react to something you did, it was fantastic. For example: I have enemy archers and infantry in front of my shield wall, if I want to do a tactical retreat, this is NOT POSSIBLE. If I order my shield wall to fall back a little bit, they will TURN AROUND and get blastered with arrows. In Warband your Army will always face the enemy, even while retreating, so their shields would still protect them from arrows. Worst part about this is, if your guys are in a shield wall, they move extremely slow. On my first battle I lost my whole infantry due to this. They are basically stuck in that position due to the inabillity to walk backwards. That is idiotic.

In Bannerlord however, even with the greatest armor value, you can get interrupted from a measly recruit or bandit with a twig, which is fucking ridiculous. I also think Sieges where better, just because the AI is aided by simpler scenery and not inconclusive about choises. You have a ladder unto the wall and thats it. Bannerlord is way too reliant on perks for progression rather than Proficiencies, making it a hell of a lot more grindy than Warband that used attributes instead, i´d gladly pick leadership over having to arbitrarily grind out my Clan level to increase my party size.

    - I don't think that tournaments are worse in banner lord, sure you get less money but I kinda like that, warband was kinda gamey winning 4000 from 'smart' bets when you are clearly the favourite is hard to justify
    - Across games The bandit lair system is fairly terrible and couching lances is basically useless given the reach of an ordinary thrust, but also bannerlords a late antiquity game rather than a medieval one so not as prevalent
    - I think the sieges can kinda get repetitive but I think the massive scenary changes helps this a lot more and the added depth with archery platforms, I will add that we need cavalry for sieges. The siege camp thing is hella cool with the new patch they have the ability to attack the siege campers early I think they will definitely go the way you hope, personally I think they should go the way of total war Attila and allow for ambushes on the regular map as well, were if you ambush you get to spawn surrounding the enemy and the enemy is completely unprepared, being able to prepare your ambush as well.
    § Imagine remaking teutoberg forest, ambushing imperial legionaries with battainan high borns with burning boulders being pushed off the forested mountains on to the imperial supply caravans and soliders below, that would be cool
    § I think it would add a battle mode, try and get your troops and supplies through the ambush
    I think adding stuff to the defender as well as the attacker would be cool in sieges attackers, like having ambushes in sieges were like maybe the defender is hiding in the sewers and down back alleys and roof tops with archers, like the battle of york in the vikings, having a second set of walls within the city, having an outer wooden palisade for the defenders
    ○ I think it would be sick to see a stealth mission like this, but don't you think that would be gamey as hell
    ○ You gotta admit the sieges are massively improved like, warband sieges after I did like 4 I was like this is hella boring, the custom battle ones were also okay
    - I think the quests are okay I don't think there worse, they could be more rewarding I agree
    - I think companions should definitely give bits of history, but I think having it randomized is so much better and makes ever experience 100% different
    - The grind for bannerlord smithing is a pain, but smithing is fairly cool and a good addition, they have fixed the invisible sword bug In the recent patch, they should definitely add more areas to smith like armour but make it easier to level up, so like its not as grindy but you have smith specific areas to unlock different things
    - Story modes side missions are so annoying,
    In many ways I wish the game was still early access so they could work on it, but I think DLCs will change a lot of these.

    • @TerryDuke

      That 4000 made a big difference, especially early on; for new gear, or pay for your warband wages if you don't own any lands yet. In that aspect bannerlord tournaments have lost their usefulness.
      I do love the idea of ambushes. You could actually do that in Brytenwalda by setting up a camp, although it wasn't reliable. A similar tactic in Bannerlord could be implemented, such as by setting up a camp ahead of large armies, and only being able to set up if you're not within their sights. And when they ride close to you, you can just ambush. It would require good guessing on the army's movements to see where they are headed, but you're right, that'd be really good!
      Of course the sieges are very much improved, my only point was that on the surface, it's largely the same. The introduction of deception tactics and starvation and negotiated surrenders would be very nice.
      I'm not sure what you mean by the bug being fixed, I literally recorded the smiting bug 2 days ago. I'd feel silly if it got fixed literally a day later!
      The thing is, companions seem to be generated using presets. The presets are always the same, it's only the name, culture and appearance that is randomly generated. And again, the character traits in this context change nothing. Hiring psychos over decent companions don't seem to change the game in the slightest.
      I agree story mode needs to be tweaked. I like starting with a family and I like the dragon banner itself, but all the missions around it, damn.
      I'm also going to be really pissed if any new features are hidden behind paid DLCs. Hopefully some modders will find ways of adding them to regular game if that happens.

      tournaments are better in bannerlord. mainly the fighting mechanics & physics that makes it more fun, but so is the layout of it.
      HOWEVER. Actually tournaments specifically I hoped for would be much better. They are barely improved from warband, just a bit changed, with few nice additions to them.
      Bandit hideouts are also very little improved in bannerlord, although not in any way worse, just better scenes and a bit of acting, boss etc. (still too repetetive)
      - Sieges are way way way better in Bannerlord, no matter how repetetive they get they are 10x better than in warband, one can always feel immersed in them, one can win 50vs500 in defence, one can lose 500vs500 as well, the siege engines, the immersion, the ai (although still not perfect), the options, everything. Ambush now as well. Sieges sucked in warband and rule in bl.
      - Quests are definetly better in BL than warband. Basically the same, but more, and a bit better/more improved.
      Story sucks. Yeah I basically agree with you on everything more or less. But man the game is more finished than many others I've played and with 1.1 patch it doesn't deserve to be labelled "Early access" anymore. Warband was way more unfinished

    Feast events could include Contests of Strength and Skill, which are like Tournaments except there’s fewer rounds and not much monetary reward. A frequent event would be going hunting for wild game. Historically accurate events that would be difficult to make engaging gameplay out of, or would be just asking for trouble, are ‘watch performers’ and ‘attend religious ceremony’, respectively.

    As for your smithing gripe, the solution to your resource problem: Just buy every ordinary hammer and pitchfork (both gives 3 wood) for coal. Buy every Pugio dagger in imperial cities, along with the most expensive throwing daggers. They are dirt cheap and still come with top tier resources.
    You *could* buy weapons to smelt for thamaskene as well, but that’s getting real expensive. Better to level a companion alongside yours in smithing to refine it.

      Making it impossible in regular games.
      The rewards are also taken from the merchants inventory in the town, so if you take out all the clothing, armour and weapons, horses, right before a tourney. And if you smith weapons and sell them to the town. You can make the weapon back.

  • @Elrohof
    @Elrohof 9 месяцев назад +4

    The idea of the leveling system is better in Bannerlord, but its execution makes it a lot less fun than Warbands.
    In Bannerlord, if you try to make a jack-of-trades character, you're so severely average at combat that tournaments aren't fun even in later stages of the game.
    Or if you make a godlike warrior, you'll be an absolute machine with any weapon, but you can't do anything else. And most of the party skills can't be decently off-loaded to a companion, because then you lose character level EXP gain, and you'll still miss out on vital perks that are only beneficial if the player character has it.
    So Warband, even just in native, is a lot more satisfying to play if you prefer being able to cover most gammeplay areas in a single playthrough, while Bannerlord will give you 2-4 playthroughs where you'll constantly feel like you're severely lacking in at least one, but often multiple major areas of gameplay.

    I and other player have gotten attached to* the Bannerlord companions because they can die. They are unique to each play through you can never see the same companion ever again in a different character's save no matter if you create multiple version of the same player character. They are more unique than they seem things can happen because of the sandbox nature of the game. They seem roughly based upon the Warband companions. I have made so many player characters with so many play styles and many times I wished that I could bring companions from different campaigns to another but I can't because they belong to that instance of Bannerlord. If you want to be a bandit and raid caravans and villages you run into problems with the Jeremus types that hate raiding but other companions are sadist and love raiding. If you don't plunder castles some companions drop relation and complain and right after that another companion will thank you for sparing the populous. I have so much to say about the Bannerlord companions but this is long enough for now.

      Warband companion can be fun but they can be tedious. They are the same every game all of them. There are many of them but they are the same even across mods. Prophecy of Pendor, Age of Heros, Tohloboria and Perisno and a few other mods have different companions but most mods even if its a very different setting from Calradia have the same companion. I guess people get attached to this crew but they are not Chat GPT companions that do amazing thing. Many times they have to be bribed to keep them from leaving which can be tedious. You can't leave any where and they can't do quest or anything to get them out of your hair so that the party morale or their moral doesn't suffer in Bannerlord you can have the companions do many things to get quest done and increase relation, influence and renown. They can't run caravans, form parties, join armies, peerage in Warband is less beneficial than in Bannerlord. Once you hear the Waband companions story its the same every time but at least Bannerlord has more variation on companions.

    I really dislike the new leveling system though, and wish the smithing skill was more like the Viking Conquest method where you could upgrade the stats of existing equipment or perhaps hire them to craft the top end gear but at a large cost. Could also have them customize your gear so that you and your companions (and rival lords) had their own unique appearance.

  • @Alte.Kameraden
    @Alte.Kameraden Год назад +14

    I'd say the biggest issue I have with bannerlord is the game is too grindy. Takes forever to level a character up, and worse their skills. The fact skills can hit a 0.0x modifier ie "0" skill gain is annoying as well. As even if you're not invested Points/Attributes into said area you shouldn't earn ZERO exp in a skill, it's kind of dumb. As a result it makes character progression in Bannerlord insanely slow, and at times just unenjoyable. I think as the creator of Harvest Moon Yasuhiro Wada said something along the lines that players need to be fairly rewarded for their time spent in the game otherwise the game will feel grindy and repetitive. The Grindy/Repetitive aspect is something Bannerlord definitely falls into. Anyone who's has tried to train Smithing, and Trade can tell you the amount of work vs reward is terrible. I'd argue even combat skills take way too long, and way too much investment with attributes to raise mostly because of the 0.0x modifier.
    Some of this could be fixed in my opinion. Setting a permanent 1.0x exp modifier so no matter what you will gain skill in a task you're doing is a good start. I also think points invested should have a bigger exp gain impact. I found that 2x normal exp combined with 1.0x modifier so it never goes below 1x exp is almost perfect, though I think 1.5x normal exp gain would likely be better.
    Reason I think that is better is because in Warband you could combine skills from player/companions. This mean that if the player invested in wound treatment and had a companion also with wound treatment the effects stacked to an extent. Meaning you can have two surgeons in the party and benefit from it. Bannerlord sadly you can not, and you have no real reason to make your main character good at anything but combine, while having companions focusing on other skills. Again another thing I think Bannerlord should improve upon. I'd love to have some skill stacking between companions. ie Party Leader and Dedicated Surgeon stacking First Aid skill effects, even if at a reduced rate, ie like Warband say make the lower of the two characters effect half what it would normally.

Everyone wanted this insane 100% realistic simulation of a medieval world, and instead people got a game that was just...good. 8:00 There is only so much you can actually code into a game, but not just that, but you have to balance and bugfix new features. It would be cool to do literally anything, like sneak and sabotage the castle, but is that feasible and important?

    • @TerryDuke
      @TerryDuke  Год назад

      Mostly the problem is ressources and management. Resonant pointed out recently that a big part of that might've been Taleworlds' decision to break apart from Paradox to do everything themselves. Having such a realistic simulation isn't impossible, but Taleworlds doesn't have the time or ressources to fully implement it. And at some point, I'm sure it becomes more about everything they've already done instead of the few things they didn't do.
      I do think however adding new siege features would be interesting. Ways to accelerate a castle falling. For instance, how many times did you cancel a siege because it took too long to build the siege towers, and reinforcements arrived, and even though you beat them back, your army is now so battered you can't even proceed with the siege? And waiting for troops to heal is also waiting for even more armies to come and stop you?
      Having some kind of high risk/high reward feature would be to infiltrate troops to open the gates. The risk would be to get imprisoned and your army is stuck outside waiting for you and if an army attacks, you can't command your army, for example.

      For me it's the simplicity and roleplay.
      I put on music for example In the name of God. Playing as the Swadians. Lining em all up.
      Riding through back and forth through the ranks. Making stupid speeches about Jerusalem.
      Viva la Shoes!
      Waving, swinging my sword at the air.
      But I can't do that in the second game well since I have to micro manage my troops on console.
      The UI is atrocious, the ai don't strategize they only gang up, the audio disappears and a bunch of other hoo ha that's ruining the game.
      Nonetheless I still play the game it looks nice but doesn't run well nor feel smooth when swinging anything in comparison to warband. Fingers crossed if we can assign troops manually and remove the arrow mouse in the next update.XD

      The game is great imo. It has issues, but its release and modern versions are both better than warband in almost every way, I agree tho about the hype thing, so many call it bad when it isn't anywhere near bad. I think it was hype and made up features that were never going to be in the game causing them to not like it, also the popularity of mods may have polluted the expectations with expectations of features that taleworlds likely would never even consider

    I remember when an old friend introduced me to Warband for the first time. He got me started and told me to do tournaments and whatnot, but from the moment I found out you can literally just recruit men and go rogue on the countryside, I knew Warband was a unique game. Something revolutionary. Played it for years and loved it. I bought Bannerlord the moment it came out. I have never been so satisfied with a sequel (or prequel) before. Bannerlord feels like a worthy successor to Warband. But your points are valid and I agree with most of them.

I had a playthrough where I build an army from the inside of a faction, and I did it with the red color faction guys (forgot their name but it starts with a v) and I was able to convince a lot of guys to betray them and join our ranks (granted, it took a lot of saving, loading in, failing to convince them, loading back and trying again until I get it) and sometimes when they joined my side, I would get castles. Like in one instances, I was able to get Orcs Hall without even putting it under siege, I just convinced a guy to join me and i got it just like that.

    As a guy that played warband since 2012 all the way untill bannerlords realease. I think, single-player wise, vanilla bannerlord has more depth than native warband. But the thing with warband is, it was brand new to the genre. It was a pioneer. So it felt like fresh air at the time. And then the mods for warband came and they were glorious. The modding scene in bannerlord is still playing catch up and i dont know if they will ever catch up. And multiplayer wise, i dont know if bannerlord will ever reach 50% of what warband achieved. I love bannerlords, but i expected much more from taleworlds. They had plenty of time and experience, bannerlord did not need to release as EA. And the official release felt rushed. To this day i still think bannerlord could have been so much more. What original MB felt in 2010 and then in 2012 with warband, they failed to replicate because they didnt push the genre further.

    Funny that I was about to make a video just like this, until I discovered this video right now.
    You nailed right on head with the points regarding sieges, leveling, quests and troop commanding, I'm actually surprised Elder Scrolls series didn't implement leveling like this, since it sounds like it would fit there.
    The campaign mode is really weird addition, but I guess it is to appeal for people who really need a story in their video games. The problem is that in Mount & Blade, you make up that story as you go.
    And as final point, I like playing both games, cause despite the flaws, they're both united with that great feeling you get when you gather up big army for a big battle, be it on field or sieges. No other game has managed to capture that.
    PS. Liked & Subscribed.

    One thing about the tournaments in Bannerlord I dont like is how the game forces you to not have the most wins.
    In my most recent playthrough, I had like 55 wins and was on top, with the 2nd place behind me having like 10 wins less.
    After traveling from one city to another(maybe a day's travel), I looked at the arena and suddenly saw there were two lords who suddenly had 15 and 20 more wins respectively... and neither of them were the ones previously behind me...
    This really makes the bonus from being champion pointless since it's like the game itself is ordering you to not be at first place.

    They could of done a much better job with battles, for e.g telling a group of infantry to flank their inantry engaging with a shield wall, or cavalry doing hit and run tactic on their archers or even archers splitting up and moving to the left and right to shoot arrow on their infantries sides while engaged with youre infantry, it would not be hard to do either as the game should pause and nit just slow down and then you pick a group for eg youre cavalry and then a pop down of different tactics comes up for eg flank or hit and run aswell as othe options and then once done it gives options of the target based on the enemies units so you can select archers or infantry or focus on units with shields or polearms. This would make battles actually feel like a tactical fight instead of just who has more units or who has the strongest units, also you could have options for unit types for eg. Polearm units you could select and have option of brace charge then switch, so the units knows once something hits its polearm such as a cavalry charge it then switches to sword and shield ready for anything else, except it has like a distance trigger or they just stick with the polearm trying to stab at someone with a shield instead of switching to their own sword and shield.

Honestly I didn't have a problem with the horses I won that I couldn't use because the price for selling them was way more compared to the other tournament rewards and in fact I will go as far to say that thanks to selling horses I made money, and there really isn't anything else you should waste your time with selling unless the money is really needed
