YES I KNOW! You can in fact send troops to key positions in warband, by holding f1 😂 Thanks for telling me! Spent 12 years playing it wrong. Don't forget to subscribe and check my other stuff 🙃
I'm also disappointed they spent all that time and care making amazing interiors of cities and castles but they are completely pointless as you can't really do anything there, just walking.
@@TerryDuke Also gang fights, (Which just got updated), merchants that sell weapons, horse and other items. Finally talking with the townsfolk can help you with find item to trade.
This game was clearly stuck in development hell. It's good to see the devs not just abandoning it and instead continuing to work on it even after the official release
yes but to be fair they are a very small company, and i mean SMALL. the fact that despite their lack of resources they were able to achieve the state of bannerlord as it is right now is praise worthy. im also glad that they are taking feeding back and constantly working on the game
@@bryanvaldez9398 They really aren't though, I mean they started out small but according to their wikipedia page they had around 130 employees in 2020. For comparison of a similar company, Paradox Studio, which makes Crusader Kings and Hearts of Iron, has 150 employees, and they are currently supporting multiple games, while Taleworlds is only supporting one. They should absolutely have had the manpower to flesh out the game more before launch imo
@@Timblebits you got the point, but they still got some issues, i mean look at heart of iron iv, years passing by and yet there's nothing really change, they just adding bunch of shitty ass dlc instead of improving it's own game.
@@Timblebits you are comparing an established veteran studio with a fair few games under there belt vs some guys that just released there second game witch is in early access ,sure they may have had 130 people in 2020 but considering they had to remake the game 2 times before that it's clear they are still a bit inexperienced
@@TerryDuke I’ve only been playing Warband since about two years ago and when I got the hardware to play bannerlord, the music just didn’t have that charm and matter the old game had
1:26 Not true tho,you can command them to hold a specific position simply by holding F1 without going there yourself But yeah, warband's battle command and formation are too simple compared to bannerlord
I really miss the old Marshal mechanic, it was simple and yet intricated at the same time, the fact that a lord was assigned as marshal via voting or just because the king liked him enough meant that it could make or break the kingdom during a war. If a lord had good relations with other lords they would follow him on campaign if he wasn't nobody would follow him. Getting to the point where you became the marshal felt like a real accomplishment.
Main problem I have is that the AI is simply stupid and doesn't know what to do in many cases. However, unlike warband you can't influence where they'll go by suggesting they do something. @@TerryDuke
@@TerryDukeyeah but army is kinda immersion breaking. In WB, usually the most prominent or powerful lords got that. In BL, you can have tier 3 clans assembling lords from lords from higher ranking clans and even the rulers clan. It’s a great feature but I feel like it’s given way too early. Maybe a fix would be you can only assemble lords from an equal or lower tiered clan.
Whereas in banner lord I got unanimously voted king for, as far as I could tell, having the most fiefs that people kept voting for me to have without any input from me.
Surprised I didn’t really see it mentioned, but another thing warband did better, which bannerlord just completely scrapped are claimants. They just don’t exist. One of my favorite ways to play warband is supporting a claimant and becoming the power behind the throne, and they could have been really cool in bannerlord with the addition of the influence system and new kingdom interactions.
True, though in Bannerlord, the main replacement for this is the story campaign, where you can either team up with the other imperial factions against everyone else, or go to war against all imperial factions. It does create an interesting setting that much like claimants, make it possible to single handedly get lots of fiefs. It'd still be cool if claimants were brought back though.
Honestly, I never cared for claimants. Why would I want to work under someone while effectively doing all the work to establish an independent kingdom? It’s also not hard at all to pledge service to an established kingdom if you really want to be an errand boy for the ai. Just seems like the worst element of both play styles
Each companion should have a quest they give you of their hopes and dreams, or wish for revenge, that if you complete with them, will increase their level, skills, and relation with you by a massive amount. The player should also have a goal from the start that works the same way. That would give every playthrough an rpg-like story besides the typical gameplay.
That would be really cool and would make companions feel more like companions. Not so sure about setting direct objections to the player character, though, unless maybe they’re allowed to choose what their overarching quest will be? For example, if they pick the path of the conqueror they’ll gain skill points for each city and castle taken over at the cost of less natural leveling from defeating enemies? Something along those lines to make the player character focused on their respective goal at the cost of being more balanced overall.
@@jooot_6850 In Crusader Kings 2 the player character has one Ambition, that gives a bonus of Piety or Prestige when completed. Easier ones, like getting married, give only a little, but fulfilling grander ambitions has a higher reward. When you finish an Ambition you can select another one. It gives a little more structure to the mainly sandbox game. Bannerlord already has quests, but it hardly has a story, even in Story mode. It could work like that and grant Renown, traits, or something similar, but imagine if the player character could randomly or intentionally select a lord who has wronged them in the past? Imagine if such an event, in backstory or emerging from gameplay, put the player on a quest of revenge that gave their character concrete benefits to complete, either by forgiveness or action? Wouldn't that allow Bannerlord to feel much more like a role-playing game rather than purely strategy?
Kinda like a Quest to say, I dunno, Find and Fix some kind of Banner with a mythical creature theme? Like a Dragon or some shit? Then maybe you'd have to do some shit like Unite the Land to your Kingdom? Sounds a bit Main Quest-y to me. You could even have a Bandit that killed your parents to start your quest...but twist, you have to team up with him to save your brother and sister. Then they could give you some kind of "Forgive him or kill him" option? Might be cool, just sayin.
Yea, I love Bannerlord for its graphics and improved settlement management stuff, but the game ends up somehow feeling even more lifeless. My last playthrough was a 200+ mod sandwich with Realm of thrones as the main one. It was pretty amazing going to war on a dragon, commanding troops from the sky, but then I'd get somewhere new, talk to someone, and run into the same lifeless text over and over. Viking Conquest for Warband is probably my favorite campaign as it so beautifully mixed a story with emergent gameplay that I never new if someones reaction to me and quest was part of the story or not, and then all the times your companions say something, react to something you did, it was fantastic. I wish Bannerlord had _that_
Loved the Vikings Reforged expansion/DLC. I think it's wishful thinking though that some outfit will release this idea for Bannerlord 2. The interface was so clunky and obtuse it was difficult to play but the music and world was addictive.
@@GenericPhantom1 "Feasts are terrible". Bro when you have an independent kingdom its hard to manage relations with lords but if you hold feasts you can increase relations for doing nothing

I disagree with the tournaments not giving enough, some of the rewards such as horses and armors can be sold for 10000+ denars which can speed early game up alot
@@certifiedredditgenius Pretty sure hunsphree is the noble camel that is sold for less than 4k. Only the second tier noble horses go for over 10k (wadar, asaligat, cossian, royal destrier, battanian thoroughbred and tyal). Then again, you could be using mods that change prices.
Using companions to increase army size is great early game and boost your leadership skill, it also lets you train up great commanders who can run around on their own and not get immediately wiped by random bandits or deserters
One thing nobody ever mentions is that troops always face the direction they are walking to. For example: I have enemy archers and infantry in front of my shield wall, if I want to do a tactical retreat, this is NOT POSSIBLE. If I order my shield wall to fall back a little bit, they will TURN AROUND and get blastered with arrows. In Warband your Army will always face the enemy, even while retreating, so their shields would still protect them from arrows. Worst part about this is, if your guys are in a shield wall, they move extremely slow. On my first battle I lost my whole infantry due to this. They are basically stuck in that position due to the inabillity to walk backwards. That is idiotic.
You can tell them to face a certain way though? Like, press f3 and say face that way after telling them to retreat. It's better because you get more control, so your army doesn't back away if you don't want them to
@@DjeauxSheauxthis isn't even one of them, how are AI worse? I've played both games vanilla recently and Bannerlord is better in basically every way I've found lmao
Like, if you want your army to get to a hill behind you or to the side, they turn towards it and get there faster. If you need them to face the enemy due to arrow fire tell them to, how is this even a problem?
Hard disagree about bandit lairs, they're a lot of fun to solo in Bannerlord. I love the fact you can actually sneak up on groups of bandits and ambush them
@@TerryDukeEvery native expansion that I've played (Bannerpage, Diplomacy, Floris, Pendor) can't compare to Bannerlord. Sieges are better because of sieges weapons, field battles are also better and it's basically just better. If you want a good modded experience then Warband is the go to
i enjoy the duels. if you kill the boss, his guard automatically surrender. giving you X amount of prisoners. i would go on a lair spree if i got the "Land owner needs Laborer's" quest BTW that quest is easy money too.
About Persuasion in bannerlord: you can convince Lords to join your kingdom, they need to either like you a lot, hate their current leader, and know that you are rich enough that you can bribe them. If they like you a lot, you might not even have to pay them. Also, the lord may own fiefs, but if you convince them to join you, they will abandon their castles and towns, unless you convince a lord of an enemy faction. In this caser the fiefs join your kingdom as well.
They even transfer with their fiefs, ofc that's why you need to pay them most of the times, you can get them from 200K-2.4M with 1-3 Fiefs and depends on if they are humble and which type of Fief they have, like a Town along with 2 Castle(their vassals).
lol there’s no form of diplomacy whatsoever so that renders this essentially useless. Unless you spend hours of time doing menial task for their clan you’re not going to increase that relation.
Terry, you are entirely wrong in that in Warband you had to go to the specific spot to order hold ground etc. You could hold the command button and basically move the flag anywhere pretty much as in Bannerlord. Awesome review so far, enjoying it.
Thanks. Someone pointed it out as well, and I did try it since then and yeah! Never too late to learn something new. Though Bannerlord still makes it easier to command troops, in that you don't have to hold f1 at all.
I think, once Mods like Brytenwalda, Viking Conquest, Gekokujo or the Third Age will appear in Bannerlord and allot of other new updates will come in, the things will be very different!
I'm playing The old Realm mod (Warhammer total war). Currently there are only Imperial of men and Vampire. They will add Greenskin and Wood elf later but gun, cannon and mortar are such a game changer. I like it very much.
@@thanhthile9520 I have an eye on it. So far it looks very promising but I will wait till it´s more finished! I like the Idea of Warhammer and Bannerlord together!
The thing I hate most about Bannerlord that I never see any discussion about is the ridiculous economy and loot system. In Warband, if you kill a bunch of sea raiders wearing helmets and mail shirts, you get a bunch of helmets and mail shirts which can be a big help early game. In Bannerlord, you kill a bunch of sea raiders wearing helmets and mail shirts, and you get scarves and hats and broken spears. Wtf? And if you want to buy armor rather than loot it you have to pay an arm and a leg. Good armor in Warband costs like 4-8k denars, good armor in Bannerlord costs like 100-150k denars. What the actual fuck is that?
The reason is balance. They wanted to make a difficult game and if you're able to simply join a lords battle and immediately get a bunch of high level loot, it makes the game much easier. They definitely should have simply scaled the cost and economy of items so it doesn't do that but they didn't
I think they tried to balance the prices with the absurd amount of money that you eventually make in the late campaign, meaning the really late campaign, as its a game about progression, they couldn't make it easy and quick, but yeah, sometimes it just sucks
It’s funny because most people like early and mid game because they have to actually play the game to get good stuff. I just bought like 300k worth of armor for my character and it felt great, especially since it only put a dent in my coffers. You don’t need the best gear early game. Modest armor will do the trick. But now my character is almost 40 and needs the good stuff so she doesn’t die in battle. Lol
Terry Duke, i i see you’ve missed out on a really cool feature on 1:15. Because in both warband, and bannerlord, if you hold down f1 (or whatever is your troop command button is) you can use your mouse to place a formation somewhere without having to be there. Try it! Its super useful
Personally, Warband still has the superior combat system, just on the virtue that good enough armor requires either blunt and pierce and you cant get interrupted. In Bannerlord however, even with the greatest armor value, you can get interrupted from a measly recruit or bandit with a twig, which is fucking ridiculous. I also think Sieges where better, just because the AI is aided by simpler scenery and not inconclusive about choises. You have a ladder unto the wall and thats it. Bannerlord is way too reliant on perks for progression rather than Proficiencies, making it a hell of a lot more grindy than Warband that used attributes instead, i´d gladly pick leadership over having to arbitrarily grind out my Clan level to increase my party size.
You can position your troops from anywhere in Warband by holding the F1 key, a little banner will appear and you can place it where you want your troops to go
- I don't think that tournaments are worse in banner lord, sure you get less money but I kinda like that, warband was kinda gamey winning 4000 from 'smart' bets when you are clearly the favourite is hard to justify - Across games The bandit lair system is fairly terrible and couching lances is basically useless given the reach of an ordinary thrust, but also bannerlords a late antiquity game rather than a medieval one so not as prevalent - I think the sieges can kinda get repetitive but I think the massive scenary changes helps this a lot more and the added depth with archery platforms, I will add that we need cavalry for sieges. The siege camp thing is hella cool with the new patch they have the ability to attack the siege campers early I think they will definitely go the way you hope, personally I think they should go the way of total war Attila and allow for ambushes on the regular map as well, were if you ambush you get to spawn surrounding the enemy and the enemy is completely unprepared, being able to prepare your ambush as well. § Imagine remaking teutoberg forest, ambushing imperial legionaries with battainan high borns with burning boulders being pushed off the forested mountains on to the imperial supply caravans and soliders below, that would be cool § I think it would add a battle mode, try and get your troops and supplies through the ambush I think adding stuff to the defender as well as the attacker would be cool in sieges attackers, like having ambushes in sieges were like maybe the defender is hiding in the sewers and down back alleys and roof tops with archers, like the battle of york in the vikings, having a second set of walls within the city, having an outer wooden palisade for the defenders ○ I think it would be sick to see a stealth mission like this, but don't you think that would be gamey as hell ○ You gotta admit the sieges are massively improved like, warband sieges after I did like 4 I was like this is hella boring, the custom battle ones were also okay - I think the quests are okay I don't think there worse, they could be more rewarding I agree - I think companions should definitely give bits of history, but I think having it randomized is so much better and makes ever experience 100% different - The grind for bannerlord smithing is a pain, but smithing is fairly cool and a good addition, they have fixed the invisible sword bug In the recent patch, they should definitely add more areas to smith like armour but make it easier to level up, so like its not as grindy but you have smith specific areas to unlock different things - Story modes side missions are so annoying, In many ways I wish the game was still early access so they could work on it, but I think DLCs will change a lot of these.
That 4000 made a big difference, especially early on; for new gear, or pay for your warband wages if you don't own any lands yet. In that aspect bannerlord tournaments have lost their usefulness. I do love the idea of ambushes. You could actually do that in Brytenwalda by setting up a camp, although it wasn't reliable. A similar tactic in Bannerlord could be implemented, such as by setting up a camp ahead of large armies, and only being able to set up if you're not within their sights. And when they ride close to you, you can just ambush. It would require good guessing on the army's movements to see where they are headed, but you're right, that'd be really good! Of course the sieges are very much improved, my only point was that on the surface, it's largely the same. The introduction of deception tactics and starvation and negotiated surrenders would be very nice. I'm not sure what you mean by the bug being fixed, I literally recorded the smiting bug 2 days ago. I'd feel silly if it got fixed literally a day later! The thing is, companions seem to be generated using presets. The presets are always the same, it's only the name, culture and appearance that is randomly generated. And again, the character traits in this context change nothing. Hiring psychos over decent companions don't seem to change the game in the slightest. I agree story mode needs to be tweaked. I like starting with a family and I like the dragon banner itself, but all the missions around it, damn. I'm also going to be really pissed if any new features are hidden behind paid DLCs. Hopefully some modders will find ways of adding them to regular game if that happens.
tournaments are better in bannerlord. mainly the fighting mechanics & physics that makes it more fun, but so is the layout of it. HOWEVER. Actually tournaments specifically I hoped for would be much better. They are barely improved from warband, just a bit changed, with few nice additions to them. Bandit hideouts are also very little improved in bannerlord, although not in any way worse, just better scenes and a bit of acting, boss etc. (still too repetetive) - Sieges are way way way better in Bannerlord, no matter how repetetive they get they are 10x better than in warband, one can always feel immersed in them, one can win 50vs500 in defence, one can lose 500vs500 as well, the siege engines, the immersion, the ai (although still not perfect), the options, everything. Ambush now as well. Sieges sucked in warband and rule in bl. - Quests are definetly better in BL than warband. Basically the same, but more, and a bit better/more improved. Story sucks. Yeah I basically agree with you on everything more or less. But man the game is more finished than many others I've played and with 1.1 patch it doesn't deserve to be labelled "Early access" anymore. Warband was way more unfinished
The only thing that bothers me in Bannerlord "tournament" system' that everyone wears their gear instead of the training weapons(ye ik they are renamed but still looks like steel and iron) and a plain cloth that we had in Warband. The bet system is fine imo becuase you can make money out of many things now, not like in Warband.
@@weebanimefan7760 yeah thats a fair criticism, It'd be cool to maybe have a clothing set for tournaments. So like maybe cause you've got rome you could have gladiator style clothing for the arenas.
It was fun to engage with the economy as a merchant. The game could have used some static characters at villages and towns for you to interact with and develop relations. Not like, numbers on a screen, but unfolding and evolving stories that you can take part in.
Thanks for this video. After trying Bannerlord briefly I was left wondering why I would bother, when Warband seems at first glance just as good but with worse graphics. This has helped.
Great comparison, thanks :) Btw. in Warband you can place groups by holding down F1 and place a flag w the mouse. You dont need to move to the places yourself.
for me the perfect game would have been a warband with banerlords graphics, I think they nailed it with the char development on warband, hate the leveling and skills development from banerlord. Simpler was better on this case for me.
11:16 lords joining your kingdom is based on your relationship with them, letting hostile clan members go free after a battle can vastly increase your standing with different clans, and they will 100% join you even if they own land, bringing it with them to your faction.
I’ve always thought that Feasts should be more involved. Every day of a Feast should have an event of some sort, as well as a meal portion where you’re partnered up with another guest and have to talk to them about stuff. Feast events could include Contests of Strength and Skill, which are like Tournaments except there’s fewer rounds and not much monetary reward. A frequent event would be going hunting for wild game. Historically accurate events that would be difficult to make engaging gameplay out of, or would be just asking for trouble, are ‘watch performers’ and ‘attend religious ceremony’, respectively.
warband have better story, while bannerlord only focus on gameplay. I dont remember any of companion, lord, vilages I help in bannerlord. but in warband, when I attack someone, it felt personal, so much that I want to kill enemy's family
are you kidding?` like really? warband had almost no story. bannerlord story is also crap, but not worse or less than warband. What made it feel better in warband?: Smaller map, less nobles, less companions, everything limited. I am not saying you're wrong, but there'd be an outrage if Taleworlds had limited Bannerlord so much lol.
The only people who were memorable to me in Warband were the faction leaders and the companions. In Bannerlord, I have whole clans of memorable people. Especially in Battania. Clan/family interactions are greater in Bannerlord by a mile. I can find myself pledging allegiance to one clan while actively sabotaging another in the same faction. And if a clan wrongs me, I can track down every living member and off their heads personally. It’s memorable alright.
What I really mis is, when you are the Marshal, or King in your Kingdom you could send Lords to missions, like scouting, sieging, defending, getting supplies, more men, and so on.
My biggest gripe is the unit groups in battle. It’s nice that you can have captains and such, but it’s now nice to try and micro-manage what units go in what formation. I wish they kept the ability from Warband where you could just assign a unit name to a group. As for your smithing gripe, the solution to your resource problem: Just buy every ordinary hammer and pitchfork (both gives 3 wood) for coal. Buy every Pugio dagger in imperial cities, along with the most expensive throwing daggers. They are dirt cheap and still come with top tier resources. You *could* buy weapons to smelt for thamaskene as well, but that’s getting real expensive. Better to level a companion alongside yours in smithing to refine it.
You used to be able to assign unit name to a group. That was remove from bannerlord some time afyer early access released for some reason. Wish some heroic modder would re-introduce it...
Few days ago I won against a 400 army with 100 defender thanks to one fire mangonel. I used the ammo to rain hellfire on the mass of enemy soldiers going up one of the ladders because they didn’t build siege towers and I also used it on the stairs behind the wall to stop the large group of enemies who breached the main gate. It was an absolute massacre and at that point they only had like 3 lords who WERENT imprisoned. Aserai filth
One small thing, recruiting nobles is definitely possible if they have land. with about 60 relation and having about 1.6 million denars, i recruited a lord that had 3 castles and another lord that had a castle and a town. I’m pretty sure recruitment chances are increased if you’re at war with the kingdom the clan is in, and when this is the case, their fiefs will go to your kingdom. Great video!
I know this video came out a month ago but the new crime mechanics were pretty fun and gave more use to the roguery skill. It still needs a lot more fleshing out but it gave me a reason to actually go through the cities.
3:30 as a player i know what to look at but i think a screenshot with a red arrow would help others to see the skill learning in that one zoom where you show the lvl up
one thing i like that Banner Lord did, was the Post-Death Cam. allowing you forces to fight on and possibly win the day, while in Warband, when you go down, that's it. back to battle menu.
About bannerlord tournaments, I'm fairly certain that the rarity of the prize increases depending on the amount of lords in the town, so if you had an army with many nobles and you won a tournament, the prize would be quite good.
I don't know about that. Bannerlord doesn't have feasts like warband did, so the odds of a lot of lords gathering in the same town is highly unlikely. More likely, awards and there quality are just very randomized.
@@TerryDuke Its been stated in change logs, the more lords in a town. The higher and better rewards, if theres a large collection of lords. You can even get named items. Just like when Bannerlord released. But it takes roughly 20+ lords at once for that. Making it impossible in regular games. The rewards are also taken from the merchants inventory in the town, so if you take out all the clothing, armour and weapons, horses, right before a tourney. And if you smith weapons and sell them to the town. You can make the weapon back. Its one of the better ways to manipulate the trading systems.
The idea of the leveling system is better in Bannerlord, but its execution makes it a lot less fun than Warbands. In Bannerlord, if you try to make a jack-of-trades character, you're so severely average at combat that tournaments aren't fun even in later stages of the game. Or if you make a godlike warrior, you'll be an absolute machine with any weapon, but you can't do anything else. And most of the party skills can't be decently off-loaded to a companion, because then you lose character level EXP gain, and you'll still miss out on vital perks that are only beneficial if the player character has it. So Warband, even just in native, is a lot more satisfying to play if you prefer being able to cover most gammeplay areas in a single playthrough, while Bannerlord will give you 2-4 playthroughs where you'll constantly feel like you're severely lacking in at least one, but often multiple major areas of gameplay.
1:05 are there other games with that concept (RPG-like or actiongame in which you can have your own army)? I dont know any game like that at our time too, only M&B, I'd love to play it if there are but i missed them
I and other player have gotten attached to* the Bannerlord companions because they can die. They are unique to each play through you can never see the same companion ever again in a different character's save no matter if you create multiple version of the same player character. They are more unique than they seem things can happen because of the sandbox nature of the game. They seem roughly based upon the Warband companions. I have made so many player characters with so many play styles and many times I wished that I could bring companions from different campaigns to another but I can't because they belong to that instance of Bannerlord. If you want to be a bandit and raid caravans and villages you run into problems with the Jeremus types that hate raiding but other companions are sadist and love raiding. If you don't plunder castles some companions drop relation and complain and right after that another companion will thank you for sparing the populous. I have so much to say about the Bannerlord companions but this is long enough for now.
Warband companion can be fun but they can be tedious. They are the same every game all of them. There are many of them but they are the same even across mods. Prophecy of Pendor, Age of Heros, Tohloboria and Perisno and a few other mods have different companions but most mods even if its a very different setting from Calradia have the same companion. I guess people get attached to this crew but they are not Chat GPT companions that do amazing thing. Many times they have to be bribed to keep them from leaving which can be tedious. You can't leave any where and they can't do quest or anything to get them out of your hair so that the party morale or their moral doesn't suffer in Bannerlord you can have the companions do many things to get quest done and increase relation, influence and renown. They can't run caravans, form parties, join armies, peerage in Warband is less beneficial than in Bannerlord. Once you hear the Waband companions story its the same every time but at least Bannerlord has more variation on companions.
One thing about combat I don't think you mentioned is the soft out of bounds. In Warband if you hot the edge you had a hard stop like you hit a wall. I really dislike the new leveling system though, and wish the smithing skill was more like the Viking Conquest method where you could upgrade the stats of existing equipment or perhaps hire them to craft the top end gear but at a large cost. Could also have them customize your gear so that you and your companions (and rival lords) had their own unique appearance.
I'd say the biggest issue I have with bannerlord is the game is too grindy. Takes forever to level a character up, and worse their skills. The fact skills can hit a 0.0x modifier ie "0" skill gain is annoying as well. As even if you're not invested Points/Attributes into said area you shouldn't earn ZERO exp in a skill, it's kind of dumb. As a result it makes character progression in Bannerlord insanely slow, and at times just unenjoyable. I think as the creator of Harvest Moon Yasuhiro Wada said something along the lines that players need to be fairly rewarded for their time spent in the game otherwise the game will feel grindy and repetitive. The Grindy/Repetitive aspect is something Bannerlord definitely falls into. Anyone who's has tried to train Smithing, and Trade can tell you the amount of work vs reward is terrible. I'd argue even combat skills take way too long, and way too much investment with attributes to raise mostly because of the 0.0x modifier. Some of this could be fixed in my opinion. Setting a permanent 1.0x exp modifier so no matter what you will gain skill in a task you're doing is a good start. I also think points invested should have a bigger exp gain impact. I found that 2x normal exp combined with 1.0x modifier so it never goes below 1x exp is almost perfect, though I think 1.5x normal exp gain would likely be better. Reason I think that is better is because in Warband you could combine skills from player/companions. This mean that if the player invested in wound treatment and had a companion also with wound treatment the effects stacked to an extent. Meaning you can have two surgeons in the party and benefit from it. Bannerlord sadly you can not, and you have no real reason to make your main character good at anything but combine, while having companions focusing on other skills. Again another thing I think Bannerlord should improve upon. I'd love to have some skill stacking between companions. ie Party Leader and Dedicated Surgeon stacking First Aid skill effects, even if at a reduced rate, ie like Warband say make the lower of the two characters effect half what it would normally.
I agree. The first time I played war band I fell in love because it wasn’t easy, but i saw my progression. I became Tywin Lannister rich and the Marshall of vlandia with a huge army. It took work but in no point did it feel grindy at all. And all of the little things left out of bannerlord, books, camps, feasts, tournaments to win a lady. I’m sure there’s more Im missing but bannerlord feels like a empty soulless grindy mess

Im at around 8:00 and luckily most of the things you arent happy about are available in mods. Castles surrendering due to starvation. Sneaking into castles and taking out any lords/mercs inside, sending assasins and poisoning the water, making more money and xp in tournements, etc.
6:10 I do remember that tournaments in WB were quite nice money source in early game, but same goes for Bannerlord - winning a tournament on its own always results in getting moey, quite a lot for early game, and there are prizes with quite high worth.
I think Bannerlord had a hype problem. Everyone wanted this insane 100% realistic simulation of a medieval world, and instead people got a game that was just...good. 8:00 There is only so much you can actually code into a game, but not just that, but you have to balance and bugfix new features. It would be cool to do literally anything, like sneak and sabotage the castle, but is that feasible and important?
Mostly the problem is ressources and management. Resonant pointed out recently that a big part of that might've been Taleworlds' decision to break apart from Paradox to do everything themselves. Having such a realistic simulation isn't impossible, but Taleworlds doesn't have the time or ressources to fully implement it. And at some point, I'm sure it becomes more about everything they've already done instead of the few things they didn't do. I do think however adding new siege features would be interesting. Ways to accelerate a castle falling. For instance, how many times did you cancel a siege because it took too long to build the siege towers, and reinforcements arrived, and even though you beat them back, your army is now so battered you can't even proceed with the siege? And waiting for troops to heal is also waiting for even more armies to come and stop you? Having some kind of high risk/high reward feature would be to infiltrate troops to open the gates. The risk would be to get imprisoned and your army is stuck outside waiting for you and if an army attacks, you can't command your army, for example.
I never got into Mount and Blade for realism or competitive gameplay. Chivalry and Morhaul are the go to for that. For me it's the simplicity and roleplay. I put on music for example In the name of God. Playing as the Swadians. Lining em all up. Riding through back and forth through the ranks. Making stupid speeches about Jerusalem. Viva la Shoes! Waving, swinging my sword at the air. But I can't do that in the second game well since I have to micro manage my troops on console. The UI is atrocious, the ai don't strategize they only gang up, the audio disappears and a bunch of other hoo ha that's ruining the game. Nonetheless I still play the game it looks nice but doesn't run well nor feel smooth when swinging anything in comparison to warband. Fingers crossed if we can assign troops manually and remove the arrow mouse in the next update.XD
The game is great imo. It has issues, but its release and modern versions are both better than warband in almost every way, I agree tho about the hype thing, so many call it bad when it isn't anywhere near bad. I think it was hype and made up features that were never going to be in the game causing them to not like it, also the popularity of mods may have polluted the expectations with expectations of features that taleworlds likely would never even consider
I'm glad they are still updating it, not a guarantee they will address some of the concerns raised in the video, but grateful, nonetheless. Now compared to Cyberpunk 2-77, I could care less how many updates they add, still essentially barebones in comparison to what was advertised years ago.
I remember when an old friend introduced me to Warband for the first time. He got me started and told me to do tournaments and whatnot, but from the moment I found out you can literally just recruit men and go rogue on the countryside, I knew Warband was a unique game. Something revolutionary. Played it for years and loved it. I bought Bannerlord the moment it came out. I have never been so satisfied with a sequel (or prequel) before. Bannerlord feels like a worthy successor to Warband. But your points are valid and I agree with most of them.
In your segment about persuasion, I disagree. I had a playthrough where I build an army from the inside of a faction, and I did it with the red color faction guys (forgot their name but it starts with a v) and I was able to convince a lot of guys to betray them and join our ranks (granted, it took a lot of saving, loading in, failing to convince them, loading back and trying again until I get it) and sometimes when they joined my side, I would get castles. Like in one instances, I was able to get Orcs Hall without even putting it under siege, I just convinced a guy to join me and i got it just like that.
Yeah, people's experiences vary wildly. In my case, as I've said, even with high relations and good reputation, I never even saw the option. If the lord has lands, by default it goes to "I'm happy with my current liege". Guess I should try it out some more till I prove myself wrong.
From what I know I’m pretty sure there working on a update that will add things like being able to destroy siege machine with a group of men or smth like that
one thing about hide outs is that theyre great xp for companions, hit charge sit back until you get the dual then say i dont duel and walk behind your companions and watch the xp come in
I litterally mentionned Brytenwalda as an example of a mod that had this option, and the team worked with taleworlds to make Viking Conquest, which also has the option as a random event. I think those had better sieges than WFAS AND Bannerlord.
I just started playing Warband recently, and unless they changed it since this vid was made, ordering troops around works exactly as it seems to in Bannerlord based on that clip. You hold F1 and a little flag comes up on the ground and you can move it around and then release F1 to send them there.
Cities need more reasons to explore them in bannerlord, walking around my village playing ‘who’s family’s struggling today’ with my peasants was at least something to do in warband, sad something as simple as that couldn’t make it into bannerlord
I'm sorry, but i have a question. What is the name of the mod that appears in 9:25, it looks so good that i want to try it. Is it like Brytenwalda or something like that? Maybe Age of Arthur? I don't recognize it.
The game is still fun to play, especially in early game. I joined Garios army and fought in some battles and sieges, and since I had around the same armor and weapons, it was still a challenge.
As a guy that played warband since 2012 all the way untill bannerlords realease. I think, single-player wise, vanilla bannerlord has more depth than native warband. But the thing with warband is, it was brand new to the genre. It was a pioneer. So it felt like fresh air at the time. And then the mods for warband came and they were glorious. The modding scene in bannerlord is still playing catch up and i dont know if they will ever catch up. And multiplayer wise, i dont know if bannerlord will ever reach 50% of what warband achieved. I love bannerlords, but i expected much more from taleworlds. They had plenty of time and experience, bannerlord did not need to release as EA. And the official release felt rushed. To this day i still think bannerlord could have been so much more. What original MB felt in 2010 and then in 2012 with warband, they failed to replicate because they didnt push the genre further.
Funny that I was about to make a video just like this, until I discovered this video right now. You nailed right on head with the points regarding sieges, leveling, quests and troop commanding, I'm actually surprised Elder Scrolls series didn't implement leveling like this, since it sounds like it would fit there. The campaign mode is really weird addition, but I guess it is to appeal for people who really need a story in their video games. The problem is that in Mount & Blade, you make up that story as you go. And as final point, I like playing both games, cause despite the flaws, they're both united with that great feeling you get when you gather up big army for a big battle, be it on field or sieges. No other game has managed to capture that. PS. Liked & Subscribed.
One thing about the tournaments in Bannerlord I dont like is how the game forces you to not have the most wins. In my most recent playthrough, I had like 55 wins and was on top, with the 2nd place behind me having like 10 wins less. After traveling from one city to another(maybe a day's travel), I looked at the arena and suddenly saw there were two lords who suddenly had 15 and 20 more wins respectively... and neither of them were the ones previously behind me... This really makes the bonus from being champion pointless since it's like the game itself is ordering you to not be at first place.
They could of done a much better job with battles, for e.g telling a group of infantry to flank their inantry engaging with a shield wall, or cavalry doing hit and run tactic on their archers or even archers splitting up and moving to the left and right to shoot arrow on their infantries sides while engaged with youre infantry, it would not be hard to do either as the game should pause and nit just slow down and then you pick a group for eg youre cavalry and then a pop down of different tactics comes up for eg flank or hit and run aswell as othe options and then once done it gives options of the target based on the enemies units so you can select archers or infantry or focus on units with shields or polearms. This would make battles actually feel like a tactical fight instead of just who has more units or who has the strongest units, also you could have options for unit types for eg. Polearm units you could select and have option of brace charge then switch, so the units knows once something hits its polearm such as a cavalry charge it then switches to sword and shield ready for anything else, except it has like a distance trigger or they just stick with the polearm trying to stab at someone with a shield instead of switching to their own sword and shield.
One thing to keep in mind, at least for me, is that mods realy improved the base game so hopefully bannerlord will get the same treatment. Still waiting a while longer before getting the new game
uhm, no you could in warband already hold the button to issue a command and it will let you place it wherever... you dont need to run to a place to place a hold this position command...
if you duel the bandit leader give u honour trait ponts, so isnt useless! and about cav spears, do you really compared a start bannerlord spear with the best warband spear?
True about the trait gain, however I'd still argue it's not rewarding enough. And I compared the gameplay. Regardless of the lance's quality, Warband keeps it steady, whereas Bannerlord requires you upgrade the skill first. Which I'm not a fan of.
@@Darek_B52 And it would be a reasonable mechanic, if the previous game had established it. All it does is take something that was already accessible previously, and hid it behind some grind. It doesn't feel as much as earning better skills as much as reclaiming something stolen.
Mount & Blade was released two years before Warband. Warband blew up because of it's multiplayer and people either forgot or never knew an earlier game existed.
Terry wish you would have mentioned that the defending side actually has no advantage in sieges if the player is participating in a siege attackers and defenders will typically trade 1 to 1
@@TerryDuke damn I didn’t know you could change that thanks for telling me also the other comment saying you can tell people to hold position from a distance in warband is totally correct
it depends on, except for settings obviously: the scene, and which level walls the troops, both tier, type, but even down to specifics siege engines of the attacker siege engines of the defender (helps if have workshop, and a good governor) tactics used in battle. You yourself can get 100 kills in a defensive siege. With good commanding of troops, they can get up to like 5x more kills and much less losses. There are youtube videos on examples for that. plus now there is the ambush mechanic
1 to 1 trade in siege? Maybe if you don’t play in the campaign/sandbox and just play custom battles. As soon you’re in the map, that 1 to 1 is gone. Get the right ranged troops in your army and you’ll notice a staggering difference whether you’re attacking or defending.
Two things I will say about tournaments is that 1. There is a skill to double the money you make but you have to get into rogue skills 2. Honestly I didn't have a problem with the horses I won that I couldn't use because the price for selling them was way more compared to the other tournament rewards and in fact I will go as far to say that thanks to selling horses I made money, and there really isn't anything else you should waste your time with selling unless the money is really needed
You can convert enemy lords but their relationship needs to be higher with you than their king which can be difficult if you are actively at war for an easy conversion get married to an enemy's daughter that could make it very easy 11:17
I don’t wanna be this guys but some of the things you said about warband not being able to do you can do you can set your reinforcement waves higher and you can also set how many troops are on the battle field at once.
Unless you use a battle sizer mod, default battle size is capped at 150. And going above 300 makes the game unstable and likely to crash. However there are mods like Perisno, where you can set the amount of waves to infinity, while keeping battle size lower, and therefore stable.

Sure, but the army feature works fairly well too. I would get annoyed with a useless marshal not doing anything in warband.
@@TerryDuke army ai on the map sucks though
@@TerryDuke You are a copycat. Make your own original videos and stop copying others.
@@grainassault4844 i like that
Kinda like a Quest to say, I dunno, Find and Fix some kind of Banner with a mythical creature theme?
I wish Bannerlord had _that_
Reminds me I need to replay Viking Conquest. Haven't done it for years.
Loved the Vikings Reforged expansion/DLC. I think it's wishful thinking though that some outfit will release this idea for Bannerlord 2.

Yeah, the AI is worse in a lot of ways. Cavalry in particular is much less effective than in warband.
You can tell them to face a certain way though? Like, press f3 and say face that way after telling them to retreat. It's better because you get more control, so your army doesn't back away if you don't want them to

i feel like there's something so nostalgic about warband's battle terrain
About Persuasion in bannerlord: you can convince Lords to join your kingdom, they need to either like you a lot, hate their current leader, and know that you are rich enough that you can bribe them. If they like you a lot, you might not even have to pay them.
Also, the lord may own fiefs, but if you convince them to join you, they will abandon their castles and towns, unless you convince a lord of an enemy faction. In this caser the fiefs join your kingdom as well.
In my experience, even with high relations, any lords with lands get stuck on "i'm happy with my current liege"
They even transfer with their fiefs, ofc that's why you need to pay them most of the times, you can get them from 200K-2.4M with 1-3 Fiefs and depends on if they are humble and which type of Fief they have, like a Town along with 2 Castle(their vassals).
@@TerryDukeYou need to be in war and their kingdom must be losing heavily for them to consider joining you in Bannerlord

Terry, you are entirely wrong in that in Warband you had to go to the specific spot to order hold ground etc. You could hold the command button and basically move the flag anywhere pretty much as in Bannerlord. Awesome review so far, enjoying it.

Inflation 😂
@@TannerWilliam07 It'd be deflation, technically, seeing as Bannerlord takes place before Warband
Lol
I wish that in Banerlord, when you executed a lord, you lose relation with his friends, but gain relation with his enemies.
Terry Duke, i i see you’ve missed out on a really cool feature on 1:15. Because in both warband, and bannerlord, if you hold down f1 (or whatever is your troop command button is) you can use your mouse to place a formation somewhere without having to be there. Try it! Its super useful
I was shocked to hear that he thought you had to go to a position in order to command your army to hold it.
Bannerlord is way too reliant on perks for progression rather than Proficiencies, making it a hell of a lot more grindy than Warband that used attributes instead, i´d gladly pick leadership over having to arbitrarily grind out my Clan level to increase my party size.
i was about to say the clan level grind isnt that bad, then i realized, i just got clan 6 and i spent like 121 hours to get there, rough.

- Across games The bandit lair system is fairly terrible and couching lances is basically useless given the reach of an ordinary thrust, but also bannerlords a late antiquity game rather than a medieval one so not as prevalent
- I think the sieges can kinda get repetitive but I think the massive scenary changes helps this a lot more and the added depth with archery platforms, I will add that we need cavalry for sieges.
§ Imagine remaking teutoberg forest, ambushing imperial legionaries with battainan high borns with burning boulders being pushed off the forested mountains on to the imperial supply caravans and soliders below, that would be cool
§ I think it would add a battle mode, try and get your troops and supplies through the ambush
I think adding stuff to the defender as well as the attacker would be cool in sieges attackers, like having ambushes in sieges were like maybe the defender is hiding in the sewers and down back alleys and roof tops with archers, like the battle of york in the vikings, having a second set of walls within the city, having an outer wooden palisade for the defenders
○ I think it would be sick to see a stealth mission like this, but don't you think that would be gamey as hell
○ You gotta admit the sieges are massively improved like, warband sieges after I did like 4 I was like this is hella boring, the custom battle ones were also okay
- I think the quests are okay I don't think there worse, they could be more rewarding I agree
- I think companions should definitely give bits of history, but I think having it randomized is so much better and makes ever experience 100% different
- The grind for bannerlord smithing is a pain, but smithing is fairly cool and a good addition, they have fixed the invisible sword bug In the recent patch, they should definitely add more areas to smith like armour but make it easier to level up, so like its not as grindy but you have smith specific areas to unlock different things
- Story modes side missions are so annoying,
In many ways I wish the game was still early access so they could work on it, but I think DLCs will change a lot of these.
(still too repetetive)
- Sieges are way way way better in Bannerlord, no matter how repetetive they get they are 10x better than in warband, one can always feel immersed in them, one can win 50vs500 in defence, one can lose 500vs500 as well, the siege engines, the immersion, the ai (although still not perfect), the options, everything.
Which game? Bannerlord has that, though the quests aren't super interesting
@@Jiub_SN In warband
Thanks for this video. After trying Bannerlord briefly I was left wondering why I would bother, when Warband seems at first glance just as good but with worse graphics. This has helped.
Great comparison, thanks :)
Btw. in Warband you can place groups by holding down F1 and place a flag w the mouse. You dont need to move to the places yourself.
Thanks, you're like 100th person I learn it from :P
@@TerryDuke Btw did you know that in Warband you can actually (not joking) place groups by holding down F1 and place a flag with the mouse??????
for me the perfect game would have been a warband with banerlords graphics, I think they nailed it with the char development on warband, hate the leveling and skills development from banerlord. Simpler was better on this case for me.
This is what I expected when it came out. I was very sad :(
That is all I wanted as well.
I dont remember any of companion, lord, vilages I help in bannerlord. but in warband, when I attack someone, it felt personal, so much that I want to kill enemy's family
are you kidding?`
like really?
warband had almost no story. bannerlord story is also crap, but not worse or less than warband. What made it feel better in warband?:
Smaller map, less nobles, less companions, everything limited.
Everytime I tried to command them they would just ride off doing something else never used it much
@@clydedoris5002 Its pretty effective when you try to siege and then ask another person to follow you
My biggest gripe is the unit groups in battle.
Warband is a good game. I bet if taleworlds spent another year on improving warband it could have been more legendary
Theres always been a pop up mini map in Warband, which via clicking you can command your troops.
Unless you have mods! There's a bodyslide mode that lets you control one of your units at random in warband
A high medieval mod a la Anno Domini 1257 being at least 80-90% finished will be the point when I give Bannerlord my full attention probably.
A pike and shot mod would be amazing too. 30 Years' War especially.
1:24 I think you can just hold f1 and tell the troops where to go in warband
You can recruit clans that have their own fiefs. It depends on a diverse set of values like being in a war, your own money, relative army sizes, etc.
Such a nice video man!! very good content over here!
Id really like to see a mod for bannerlord thats just warband
Like warband with bannerlord engine
we all just wait for pendor on that engine
1:05 are there other games with that concept (RPG-like or actiongame in which you can have your own army)? I dont know any game like that at our time too, only M&B, I'd love to play it if there are but i missed them
honestly the day when warband becomes from great to legend is day what I wait =)
Virgin Bannerlord companions vs Giga Chad Warband companions
@@GeetMonke I love how your bulletproof argument just ended the discussion

That's an interesting perspective, good point.
1:27 i'm on playstation so idk about pc but i can place my troupe from away, i don't need to go to the place i want to place my soldier
When the modifier reached 0 for me I used console commands to make ot easier
You can solve these issues by downloading these mods:
Attribute and 2 focus points per level
Trade xp from caravans and workshops
Better smithing (Saves you all the clicks and you can manually set your stamina rate)
He love warband so much he didnt even know about the f1 in battle option
I love the bandit raid mechanics, not gonna lie. The lancing is absolutely scuffed though.
1:30
Shadow of war: oh ok yeah I Definitely don't have an army of orkx
I also wish you could command your units in battle to attack or shoot at a certain unit, not just attacking the closest enemy.
13:54 whats the name of the song. It was present in many Warband mods when I played it as a teen.

That'd be swell.
I love warbands VC. I'm always going back to it. Yes, Bannerlord is also great, waiting for big mods.
So wait another 10 years
one thing about hide outs is that theyre great xp for companions, hit charge sit back until you get the dual then say i dont duel and walk behind your companions and watch the xp come in
Mods are what makes this game shine.
Interesting that most of the issues regarding to Warband were addressed by various mods.
in warband you can hold f1 to direct troops to desired location without being there
you know something isnt right, if you are looking more towards bannerlord mods than updates lmao
Updates bring fixes, mods bring new features 😄
Not that updates dont bring new stuff, but you know what I mean.
Holding the F1 button in warband will actually let you position troops away from you, that "total war" mechanic is already in warband.
“Poising there water supply” With fire And Sword: AM I A JOKE TO YOU?!!!!
I litterally mentionned Brytenwalda as an example of a mod that had this option, and the team worked with taleworlds to make Viking Conquest, which also has the option as a random event.
I think those had better sieges than WFAS AND Bannerlord.
@@TerryDuke bro it’s just meant to be funny
I just started playing Warband recently, and unless they changed it since this vid was made, ordering troops around works exactly as it seems to in Bannerlord based on that clip. You hold F1 and a little flag comes up on the ground and you can move it around and then release F1 to send them there.
"Poisoning their water supply"
That was in WFaS if I recall correctly. So you're right, they DO know that.
You can tell troops to hold at a position where you are not at by holding the hold position button, rip for not knowing this
Really in depth and well-done analysis. Thanks.
He just copied Resonant's review. He is nothing but a copycat.
It is Brytenwalda actually!
They deleted the training with your troops :(
Yeah i really liked to take my army to training fields for some sparring. It is really a step back.
@@TerryDuke Wait so if you upgrade the skill you hold your lance/spear more expertly?...sounds like an RPG mechanic to me.
@@Darek_B52 And it would be a reasonable mechanic, if the previous game had established it. All it does is take something that was already accessible previously, and hid it behind some grind. It doesn't feel as much as earning better skills as much as reclaiming something stolen.
@Terry Duke I disagree about it being grind. I mean if I go in as a thief or something I'm not mastering lance out the gate
Mount & Blade was released two years before Warband. Warband blew up because of it's multiplayer and people either forgot or never knew an earlier game existed.
i played the og mb before warband and when warband came out it was like a godsend
Terry wish you would have mentioned that the defending side actually has no advantage in sieges if the player is participating in a siege attackers and defenders will typically trade 1 to 1
Depends on your settings, whether or not friendly troops receive full damage. And ballistas can weak havoc in a defense.
@@TerryDuke damn I didn’t know you could change that thanks for telling me also the other comment saying you can tell people to hold position from a distance in warband is totally correct
it depends on, except for settings obviously:
the scene, and which level walls
the troops, both tier, type, but even down to specifics
siege engines of the attacker
siege engines of the defender (helps if have workshop, and a good governor)
tactics used in battle.
@@user-wq9mw2xz3j yeah for sure but if you are on the attacking side there isn’t much of a competition for the defenders
In warband there are multiple ways to make your troops hold a specific position without going there yourself
So I've told like 50 times now 😂
duels vs brigands i feel are meant to be when you are outnumbered or outmatched (in numbers) or dont want to risk losing a soldier
Bannerlord is inferior because it does not have Viking Conquest, simple as that
Two things I will say about tournaments is that
1. There is a skill to double the money you make but you have to get into rogue skills
2. Honestly I didn't have a problem with the horses I won that I couldn't use because the price for selling them was way more compared to the other tournament rewards and in fact I will go as far to say that thanks to selling horses I made money, and there really isn't anything else you should waste your time with selling unless the money is really needed
How the hell you get 1200 men in your army
Oh? Bannerlord cheats (the mod)
Fighting:
Since polearms can now thrust from upward, spear game play has been drastically improved.
@@TerryDuke pretty sure you can increase the battle size in the files. Also above 500 is still playable in my opinion.
8:23 You gotta actually aim the lance bro and try getting a longer one
Honestly i am impressed with this game already
Cant wait what it will become when everything gets fleshed out
