  • I bought this car 6 years ago after several years of searching. This car, for me, is a reminder of my youth and is a near perfect example. The car is all original except for the expected maintenance and replacement of things as they wear out. There are some cars that have non-functioning hood scoops/vents but, the hood on the Z24 is made of fiberglass and the engine does take the air through the hood, which is all original. The car in her day was neither the fastest or the slowest but, she has always made music to my ears through that intake and exhaust.

I was 3 years old when Chevy put out this style Z24 Cavalier. Even as I got older, it seemed as though everybody wanted the Z24 package for their Cavaliers. I live in Pensacola, Florida and I still see so many of them in almost mint condition. One of my customers is in his late 70's and still has his '90 model Z24. It has only around 24K on the clock (yes, that's 24,000 original one-owner miles) and it starts LITERALLY the second you bump the key to start. He jokes with me all the time, saying they better dig a hole a lot deeper than 6 feet because his Z24 is going in the ground with him. No, he's actaully going to leave it to his great-grandson.

If he has the electronic dash maybe those aren't true miles. I had one and we used to take out the fuse from the glove box and it shut off the digital dash and didn't rack up miles

Those 2.8's sounded great if you added a turbo muffler to give it a deeper sound at full throttle. Back then and into the early 90's you were able to change out the stock chip for a better performance out of the V6. The only thing was when you do that u were required to install a lower temp thermostat to avoid overheating. Did that to my '87 Z24 cpe when I owned it back in '93. Bought the bowtie used at the time. Sure wish I had the white beast back now!

Mike Name I would learn how to spell the word "two" before making such an ignorant comment as this, the fact that you can't correctly spell a two letter word let's me know how backwards you are, in that case, the reverse slot is probably your favorite, because you can relate.

It was quick, great mpg, super dependable and oh that sound! Had so much fun in (and on!) that car! Recently went car shopping and tried hard to find another one in good shape but those that have good ones won't part with them, if I still had mine I wouldn't either. Keep up the good work taking care of yours and enjoy it for us poor, dumb fools who let ours go!

I am [still] the proud and ORIGINAL owner of a 1989 Chevy Cavalier Z 24! I bought it here in Germany (military affiliation) and 'we' (my Z and I) are still here. (It's never been to the states, but has been here in Germany the whole time.) I have taken care of it. I love to take it out on the Autobahn, where there are no speed limits, and let it loose. My heart still skips a beat once I hit 120 mph, and the 'governor' cuts off the motor!!! What a thrill!

I bought a red 1988 Z24 as my first and only brand new car. $12,000 out the door. I got it with the manual transmission, and I loved it. I kept that car clean and put a kick as stereo it. It was an awesome car for a kid in his early 20s. My friends and I had some great times in that car. I had it for about 3 years when a young girl backed into my hood in a parking lot. It crunched the nose on the fiberglass hood. When I was getting it fixed, I had the body shop repaint the entire car. The original paint was bad and had plenty of small road chips. I picked the car up, and it looked better than new. One day later, I was driving home, and a deer caused a pickup truck to cross the center line ,and we went head-on at 50MPH. Needless to say, my Z24 was totaled. But both the driver of the pickup and my self survived. He had minor injuries. I had my bell rung and had cuts and broken bones in my left arm. If you saw the pictures of my car, you wouldn't believe I survived. The cop on the scene told me in the hospital that it was a miracle ✨️ 🙏

Love the 80s styling and bodykit, reminds me of the 1980's Vauxhall Astras and of course the Vauxhall Cavalier that shared the J-Body structure. Those 2.8s have a lovely sound to them. Rare to see a manual too! And a shift light back then is a novelty - all manufacturers bang on about these days to improve economy! Great video!

I had a red 1990 Z24. My first car. I got when I was 19 in 1994. Looking at your car reminds me of my youth too, but not a very good or happy time for me during the period of my life when I had that car. Nothing to do with owning the car, just depression and struggling with school. It's weird how seeing the interior reminds me of so many negative things from my past.

Had an 88 Z24 blue, blue interior,5 spd just like video. Dang I miss that car! Did everything well, was good on fuel, handled good, sounded awesome, and always gave a good account of itself:) Was very reliable as well, when we parted ways she had over 427,000km on her and still ran and drove great and the engine had never been apart. Noticed there a few subtle differences between 88 and 89 (mine actually built in fall of 87) Seats where different, no vent under steering column, smaller ball shaped shifter knob and I am positive no upshift lamp. Other than that watching video was like stepping back in time!

Bought a convertible version in California after the insurance on my Vette went to $5k/yr (I was a bad boy) and then moved to Montreal. Interesting winters. Took 40 minutes for the inside to start to heat up and the shifter was like going through mollassas. But I guess overheating issues were lower as I did worry about the head gasket while I owned it. Finally sold it, was a decent, inexpensive car. If a bit cheesy.

Its a known defect with chevys that you can't drive them over rocks or railroad ties. It was the latter that got me, with the same result as you. I guess they didn't want me driving around the middle school football field, but at least have the decency to trim the grass around them so I can see them late at night.

I kinda miss buttons like "CrO2" and "Metal" for cassette decks. The pinnacle of cassette technology back in the day!

My dad had a green one. He took very good care of it and drove it for years, until the roof caved in.

I have a mint 2000 Z/24 Cavalier I owned since new. It's all original except for a custom stainless steel exhaust, K&N air filter and a 12 in Alpine subway fer hooked to the stock radio. Only comes out of the garage when it's nice. It's kinda rare. GM didn't make too many painted bright white, Grey interior, sun roof, full RD radio with CD and cassette, full power everything but with a 5 speed. Now she has 117,832 miles on her, gets 32mpg, full synthetic Mobil 1 oil and still looks factory fresh

Nice car, sounds great like it should. The Z24's always had a gutsy exhaust note. I would recommend painting those wiper arms with a satin black finish, especially since you can't help seeing them while driving.

I had one almost exact. Minus the power lock/windows and it was maroon/silver. Traded it off w/226k for a '98 Z24 5-speed black. Just watching your video takes me back 24 years ago when I drove mine off the used car lot. Wow, the memories. Do you recall the RPM's at 60 mph in top gear?

i was born in 1989 and we use to have a1989 chevy cavalier two door. hard top then later a 1995 chevy cavalier two door hard top. the 89 was apple red the 95 was Cayenne Red red hot sally and red hot ruby. had the 95 lasted untill16 years in sept of2011 may she rest in piece the other one have not seen since 2000 for the89. both. cars disliked rush hour traffic And drive through restaurants both have there own character traits for many that dont believe it. and the saddest part the 89 had rally style rims on the car another reason to bust into tears. and now we have a 2003 chevy cavalier gold champagne color.

Man, this thing’s great! I’m looking at a clean, one-owner ‘89 Cavalier (it’s not Z24 V6 5-speed, like yours) as a nice comfortable, reliable, and slightly retro commuter vehicle - you know, add a little bit of nostalgia to the daily grind.
We’ve had a few of these in the family over the years, but we sold them off many, many years ago. I recently sold my 2012 Malibu and now I’ve no GM vehicles left, so I’m definitely missing them.
Hopefully I can nab the clean one before someone else finds out about that gem!
