How We Think When We Improvise

- I've heard so many artists, lecturers and teachers say they're "not thinking" when they improvise. I understand but I don't believe it to be entirely true. I also want to offer a different concept for playing "outside" the harmony - for me, it's a melodic consideration, not a strictly harmonic or theoretical one.
Thanks to @AdamLevyGuitarTips for spurring the line of thought about thinking vs. playing: • GUITAR IMPROVISATION: ...
Thanks to "Baldwin Funster" on MusicPlayer Forums for getting the gears turning about "playing outside."

Really nice lesson. And thanks for the shout-out.
Thanks Dave. I think it was important that you emphasised living with/shedding a new concept so you don't need to use the intellectual side when your in flow. Nice playing.
Right on 🎉❤😂

Extremely articulate explanation!
Thank you!
Nice one, Dave!
Thanks, Andy!
Please could explain your concept again about the superimposition part….I really love your lesson
Thank you!
Superimposing means to be thinking of different harmony instead of, or at the same time, as the original harmony (like playing Db minor while the F minor is happening).
My real point is that I've worked on that individual sound to a level where I am not actively or consciously THINKING about that superimposition - it has become a word or a sound or a sentence in my vocabulary. All I'm consciously thinking about is the melody, the tension, or the emotion that using that superimposition/phrase would convey.
That’s amazing…
Im trying gradually to get your concept and techniques down…. Your ideas sounded really beautiful… Any tips?
