    I'm a structural engineer in the UK, fibre reinforcement will be absolutely fine for a ground bearing slab. Its main purpose is to control the risk of cracking as then concrete dries. In the UK, we often use mesh rebar because its cheaper than fibre but what ever works! Exciting times, would love the opportunity to build my own home! Good luck with it all.

    Can't believe the foundation is done and the Woodworking finally gets to fire up!
    I've been waiting for the wrap up on that to drop so we can start seeing the framing begin.
    This is gonna be so good! Please let your old 4 legged shop buddy make an appearance. Lol!

    Yes,mesh sheets is cheap and easy and you break the big slab in sections to prevent cracking,Thank you for posting.

    Gotta draw the line somewhere. Everyone else will spend your money if you let them. No need for extra reinforcements in the crawl slab. Fiber is plenty. Good call

    Nice work. I feel your "termite pain." Here in SC we have to treat new construction and re-treat every 10 years. Ours wasn't treated initially so they had to come in and drill holes everywhere to pump in the poison. It's part of a termite bond that includes an annual inspection. If we ever get damage the insurance policy should (hopefully) fix it.
    I'm originally from MI also and didn't have to deal with this there, or in MA where we lived too.
    Can't leave wood on the ground for long!

      I'm surprised you can still get that in SC. They stopped offering full bonds in Georgia ages ago.

    I'm always amazed by how we have very specific tools for verys specific tasks, most of them with affordable options, but we still use long square pipes to manually smooth concrete surfaces.

      It’s not if, but when, in a lot of the US. Just have to put it into the maintenance schedule to have a pro check and treat every few years for prevention.

    It is great to see such attention paid to a foundation. It is expensive, but worth it. Even though it doesn't look like you have expansive soils, I would have put some kind of reinforcing in that floor (welded wire say) just in case cracks develop.

    After I had the framework of my house complete, every stick of lumber/plywood was sprayed with a boric acid solution. Boric acid is a termite's death knell.

    Chris, was that a "prelude" of sorts? Or a "prequel"? I swore I observed a foundation worker with his shirt off. I bet he was awesome, jovial and spontaneous. Im sure he got more work done than anyone else that day. 😅

    Before I poured the footers for my foundation walls I layed a 1 1/2" pipe under them. When it came time to install the water line i just slide the 1" water line inside the pipe and up though the concrete slab in less than a minute with no digging needed.

    I've seen on other high end homes that they use a copper flashing between the foundation walls and sills as termite prevention. I'm sure you're well past that at this point however.

    • @ThirdCoastCraftsman
      @ThirdCoastCraftsman  7 месяцев назад +1

      Do termites not like the copper?

    • @nottherealjk
      @nottherealjk 7 месяцев назад

      @@ThirdCoastCraftsman I don't know if it's all copper, but York makes a termite copper shield flashing that seems to prevent incursions from the foundation. Relatively cheap insurance considering what your home is made of!

      @@ThirdCoastCraftsman It's less that they don't like it, more that they can't really chew through it and have to go around it. It doesn't stop termites, but it does make them more visible.

    Are you sure that termites are your problem, Chris.? I have had carpenter ants degrade wood structures in both Midland and Clare counties, not far north of you. Ants are easily controlled with spot pesticide treatments.
    I heard that termites were not an issue in Michigan because of our cold winters. Maybe I heard wrong.
