I remember hearing once that the actors for Megaforce/Super Megaforce asked for more character development and were told "no one cares about the characters, they just want action."

I watched a video of their panel at Power Morphicon, and you could tell they wanted to do all the cool Gokaiger stuff....the Silver Ranger's actor ( yes, I even forgot the character's name....that's how bad MegaFarce was ) even explicitly mentioned being disappointed that he didn't get to be GokaiChristmas, and Jake's actor even did his best impression of Ikari Gai saying GokaiSilver to introduce him as he came in. By the end of the whole thing my biggest take away was "why couldn't they have even 1 thousandth of that personality in character?" ...2nd biggest was "they clearly loved Gokaiger & wanted to do all that fun stuff...they just earned my respect"

I always felt bad for the Megaforce actors. I imagine it must have been really frustrating to not have anything substantial to work with for a character. Troy is a bad character but I feel it that the acting is bad because of inexperience meeting bad direction and nothing to actually do with the character.

I feel one of the biggest problems with Megaforce is that the producers just wouldn't listen to anyone. They were so sure they were going to make the best anniversary season ever that they ignored the fact people actually kind of hated their ideas from the very beginning. I still remember Tzachor initially announcing Megaforce on Twitter and the backlash he got from the idea of, rather than giving both Goseiger and Gokaiger their own adaptations or just skipping Goseiger altogether, the idea of combining the two. People hated the idea from the start, especially those of us who knew how amazing Gokaiger was, but he just trucked on, minimizing and ignoring criticism and even saying, "I don't understand why everyone hates my ideas!"
It turned out to be even worse than any of us could have imagined.

One of the problems with that is you can't really go wild. Gokaiger are clearly pirate-based team, and if you mix pirates and power rangers with Neosaban black-and-white morality you can't go anywhere but 'rogues to heroes' route, which is basically copypasting Gokaiger plot.

    • @cjaypaz9842

      @ВладиславШаклеин-ч7м 5 лет назад +8

@@cjaypaz9842 You're missing a point I tried to make. Wild Force CAN go differently, rerardless of whether it did so or no (personally, it falls into 'meh' season category for me) because of the theme here.
But you have pirates to work with. An entire 5 to 6 man team of pirates. Gokaiger works because Sentai characters can take darker turns and can be more morally gray, unlike most their ranger counterparts, whose negatives is usually either 'teamwork issues' or 'evil mind control' (basically why I despise Tommy in favor of Burai).
So even if Neosaban would try to go pirates, they'd just end up as some fellas in NOT SPANDEX goody two-shoes heroes saving the world for the sake of saving the world, rather than it being a side effect of a way less noble goal, along the way to which Gokaigers turn into actual heroes saving the world. With Rangers, 'pirateness' will end up being the facade even a child won't buy.

I still think that Samurai would have made a lot more sense if Jayden had been trained as the sixth ranger, but after Lauren's injury (while training Emily in the rewrite, combining some story threads) and Antonio's theft for the Gold morpher, he was promoted to Red Ranger. Instead of the 'are you the red ranger?' gag in the first episode, they were all expecting Lauren to show up - all accept for Emily - and they're all surprised when Jayden rides in on a white horse (the planned introduction for Gold Ranger Jayden). Due to his status as a 'sixth ranger in training', Jayden's brash attitude and skill set would have made a lot more sense, as he was being trained to a much higher level, with the expectation that he'd be jumping in when the Rangers required the additional power, and staying sidelined when they didn't (never escalating the fight). His development would have been to become a team player, but his occasional slips into lone-wolf status and Master Ji's obvious pride would have made more sense as well.

I do count Super Megaforce as a separate season because of the simple fact they change the suits and zords similar to the seasons of MMPR where the change of zords marked as a new season.
I also use Sentai as an indicator of where a season starts and ends since Power Rangers was using footage from one season over two years.
But the argument of one season versus two seasons is similar to the argument of if Lord of the Rings is one book or three.

Super megaforce should've been a separate season as it made no sense to have pirate based powers be a power up to the initial megaforce powers as there was no connection between the two. Plus, it makes Orion a little confusing as well because he was both the 6th ranger but only when they went into their super mega mode or whatever. They should've just had the gosieger suits for one series, with it ending with the rangers losing their powers just before the armada came to earth which could've led into the next season where Gosei and Tensou provide the rangers with their new pirate based powers that also gave them access to every ranger team before them (while omitting suits that were sentai only) which would've made Orion's inclusion feel less awkward. Also, I agree about the acting and lack of development for the rangers and, especially, about paying tribute to power rangers past as a lot of the episodes in super megaforce felt like they were paying tribute to the sentai rather than power ranger history.

Disney should get the Power Rangers fights back and reboot the series by turning it into a Power Rangers animated series on Disney+. The series would be a retelling of the original team (Jason, Kimberly, Zack, Trini, and Billy) with Rita Repulsa, Goldar, and Lord Zedd as the main villains and Zordon and Alpha-5 in supporting roles. The animation would be similar to Star Wars: The Clone Wars and their would four seasons about with the main focus being are heroes balancing both being heroes and high school students and the season would be set in each year of high school.

Turbo: I actually liked it when it first aired given that it was the new season when I started watching TV, I was like 3 years old. However, 23-year-old me does find it being just as episodic and formulaic as Zeo but worst at time. I'd say it's more of a nostalgic guilty pleasure.
Super Ninja Steel: It improves on its predecesor, but that is not saying much.
(Super) Samurai: I had high hopes for it when it first aired but it is almost a 1-to-1 copy of Shinkenger, if with Bulk and an OK version of Skull. When I first saw it I thought I missed an episode or 6, with the introduction of a new zord out of the gate, then I thought that it may have been a localization thing when imported over to Latin America, but no. Starting the series at a mid-way point can work, but it's quite tricky to pull off and they didn't.
Megaforce: You have arguably the best looking set of rangers ever, Christina Masterson and Ciara Hanna are both beautiful women and Andrew Gray, Azim Rizk and John Mark Loudermilk are good looking guys, but good looking isn't a personality trait (which is something that even the 2017 movie understood). And Robo Knight at times feels more human than Troy, which is not much Andrew Gray's fault as it is more to the bad script and bad direction.
Ninja Steel: Forgettably bad. I don't really recall that much from this season other than a few moments. All characters are bland and uninteresting. I'd rather take Megaforce and Super Megaforce because they are like a car crash that I can't turn my attention away from.
Super Megaforce: Arguably the easiest one to adapt into a legacy season given that the Sentai was an Anniversary season that revisited previous seasons, they have a pirate theme that they didn't even bother to explain. They could get away with that in the earlier seasons because it wasn't that prominent in their suits as much as this one is. They could have thrown so many references to previous seasons and nobody would have complained if they were done right, like making the Blue Ranger the smart nerd of the group that comes up with ideas, that sounds an awful lot like Billy or to some extent like Cam. A newcoming Red Ranger that is suddenly thrown into position the position of leading a team (Andros, Leo, Cole, Jack, Nick, Casey and maybe Wes). You can have an episode of one of those rangers meeting with Troy and showing him how to become a leader, ideally it would have been Cole being the one that fitted the least when he joined, but given some circumstances that would be impossible, next in line would be, imo, Jack timetravelling (or Troy timetravelling)
Interesting how the bottom six (counting Samurai and Super Samurai separate) are all Neo Saban seasons...

Gokaiger was the best Sentai Season; and making Gokaiger a stupid power up just pissed me off. They had the potential of making an amazing and memorable show if they had just STUCK to the original story. The charm of Gokaiger was that it was a group of random space pirates understanding why it was important to save earth and not be selfish. They also had to EARN those powers. Unlike here they were like 'eh you can have my power' ughhh I really wished Gokaiger got a redo.

With beast morphers airing currently, I hope that there’s going to be a super megaforce team up. It’s not just for fan service, but adapting one of go busters vs movies (either as a two parter or a one hour special) could give the super mega cast a chance to get developement that they didn’t get in their season. Hasbro has more money than Saban, so they are more likey to do the team up. They just need to find a cost efficient way to bring the actors of the special. We’ll have to wait until the second half the the year to see if the team up will happen. Also for the other go busters team up, it would be harder to adapt because it has a larger cast. It would be more expensive to bring the actors. But Hasbro can still find a cost efficient way to bring the casts if they can. Plus if the team up happen, we could get a cameo from the Toq rangers if Hasbro plans to do Toqger next. But that will be for next year if beast morphers did the dino team up. Probably starting from the Zyuohger adaptation, team ups will be easier to do because there will be one full season and there will one team up starting from the Zyuohger adaptation

I do love this stuff, and find it inspiring. I'm kind of wanting to make a form of Power Rangers Simulator of sorts... but well, there are a few steps:
    1) Binge watch all of Power Rangers. Making certain to take breaks occasionally.
    2) Go back, and try to come up with "rules" and stats for how the world seems to work, different methods of doing things (Power Ranger Power creation, Monster Creation, Invasion, Regions of Power Rangers)
    3) Note time travel based stuff
    4) Make a pen and paper test game of sorts... and see what attempting to redo various episodes and series ends up looking like. If the series cannot be replicated without issue... then I've done something wrong. If I have to jump through hoops... I've done something wrong.
    5) See how pen and paper test demos work with different Teams swapped with different villains... or just mixing up teams.
    6) Try introducing some elements that should hypothetically work--based upon power ups that appear in the show. See how those work.
    7) After getting a demo-able pen and paper test game, start working on making a simulator using ASCII/Unicode and developer graphics.
This... this is not something that is likely to appear tomorrow or next month. Maybe I might have something together in 2021... for the Pen and Paper test part.
Think something similar to how Dwarf Fortress works--except without getting the M-Rating that Dwarf Fortress kind of automatically gets (if you cannot see what you are doing getting Ao or M--and inspiring several ethics discussions in Dwarf Fortress... you are not playing the game right). Maybe something to force an E-Rating (even though this will never go to the ESRB). You can put projects for your centre of operations, give suggestions to your Ranger Squad, work on upgrades/mods for their powers. You would not be directly controlling what gets done though.
These videos... and some of the comments... kind of get me pumped up a little bit.

I love how almost all of these were Neo Saban seasons save for I think one. That says so much.
But yeah, this makes sense. I'm still planning on writing my own Power Rangers season, and since you're kinda THE Power Ranger guy on RUclips in my books, I'm relying on your videos to help me figure out how to make a good season of Power Rangers. Essentially, you strike me as a true fan, like how I am with both Digimon and MegaMan, and you're one of the few honest to God PR fans I know of that isn't elitist or who hasn't moved onto Super Sentai.
And THANK YOU for bringing up how Samurai was just Shinkenger in America. That's my biggest issue with it honestly. Shinkenger is probably my favorite Super Sentai, because it made great use of Japanese culture in order to tell a story that was both heartwarming and absurd, which I feel is something Power Rangers has always done to some degree with its story plots, at least the GOOD ones. That said, PR Samurai failed because it just did what Time Force did with Mirai Sentai Timeranger, just retell the Super Sentai story with different actors and a few different story plots here and there. The problem here though, is that it worked for Time Force, because the premise was time travel, a universal concept that ALL cultures can appreciate. Shinkenger is based STRICTLY on Japanese culture, which just looks stupid in America. Also, someone tell me why not ONE of the Rangers in Samurai was Japanese! Jaden Christ over there even has a JAPANESE LAST NAME! And without the Japanese characters leading, the story being so Red centered just looks stupid. It worked in Shinkenger because they were emphasizing Takeru was the Samurai Lord, and the others were his retainers. Makes sense that he'd get a bit of the spotlight, but they never forgot to develop the other characters. PR Samurai just did it because Jaden is the Red Ranger, nuff said. NO! That's not enough said.
I didn't plan on this being so long. Just know that I loved this video, and your work in general.

I remember watching Gokaiger for the first time and being blown away by the cameo episodes. I'd never watched a Sentai season before and as a gateway into it I felt like it was perfect. The tributes acted as re-introductions as well as actual homages, and the VS movie with the Goseigers was really good. A PR version of Captain Marvellous would have been interesting to see given his grey-area morality, and they could have had a Gai type character who knew everything about the past ranger teams helping them along. When I heard about it not getting a full adaption I was genuinely crushed, and now my other 3 favourite Sentais have been somewhat thrown under the same hammer to an extent as well. Kyoryuger was fun and Dino Charge didn't quite manage to translate it over without being overly cheesy, Ryusoulger's Knight motif was an interesting way to bring back a Dinosaur themed season and was a missed opportunity with PR completely ignoring the Knight theme, and now given recent news Kyuranger won't be getting a full adaptation either. HUGE missed opportunity for the first ever 12 Ranger team!

I honestly feel like the Megaforce seasons could've worked if they'd drawn on more than just superficial comparisons to the original. "We have a juice bar!" Neat! Have Bulk run it! "We have a quirky science teacher!" Is the eccentric scientist from In Space still around? "The mentor is a student of Zordon and half as believable!" Here's a thought. Make it a Wizard of Oz scenario and make Skull, who you made rich in Samurai, the man behind the curtain. This way, we have a team chosen by someone with no idea what he's doing who happens to be a fanboy with knowledge of the original lore and enough funding to gain access to the tech, and they're surrounded by unlikely mentors who can help them evolve from the most unlikely group into true legends. Potential for an actually effective "liar revealed" scenario, too.

While older yet more modern series like Ninja Storm, Dino Thunder, SPD, Mystic Force, and RPM would feel much more life like and I think it was due tot he same reasons, the acting and writing.

Honestly about the Ninja Steel enemy aesthetics, I could say from everything that I've learned about Japanese culture (from Gaijin Goomba) that it somehow makes sense since almost all of the enemies are based on Yokai (especially the cat one with the clock because it is indeed heavily associated with ninja) but yes, they didn't seem like they belong together despite the Japanese roots (and for the life of me, I don't know what is going on with that galaxy TV show madness). But if I had to nitpick on what is supposed to change in the show, it would have been the actual theme instead (and remove the intergalactic show thing altogether).
I'm not saying that Ninja Steel is bad in a way, heck I was actually excited about the actual potential of it. But if they were to match with the enemies, I think they should introduce a new thing into the franchise that is also another aspect of Japan that I'm surprised they've never come up with yet. Onmyoji.
For reference, onmyoji are government assigned individuals that practice the art of onmyodo that is a mixture of Buddhism and Shinto (not sure if Taoism is also included) and they are the astrologers that predict what will happen in the future, are responsible for making the calendar and... Exorcising spirits, or oni/ demons aka yokai. Y'all can probably guess where this is going xDDDD
I would like them to have an onmyoji based Power Rangers/ Sentai. Like imagine the coolness if that happens.
Also fun fact: the most famous Onmyoji is Abe no Seimei who is basically the Merlin of Japan. So, we got introduced to Ninjas and Samurai
    Samurai- Warrior
    Ninja- Rogue
    Onmyoji- Mage
I swear if they actually introduce the onmyojis, I'd be so happy and the trifecta will be complete :')

Mega/SuperMega are perfect examples of why you don't choose a male model to be the anchor of your power rangers team. Good news is I think Ninja Steel might get upgraded to third worst season after seeing the monstrosity Nickelodeon has created with Beast Morphers. One dimensional villains, overly slapstick comedy and completely wooden rangers. I've only been able to watch three episodes and every. single. one. landed with a "thunk" that shook my childhood to it's core.

I always thought the problem with Turbo was how the super sentai footage of Carranger was meant to be a parody of super sentai.

Turbo - Fighting for not car safety and eating too much pizzas
Super Ninja Steel - The only moments are the crossovers, the rest are still bad
Samurai and Super Samurai - A piss poor Shinkenger and first two seasons Spongebob kills retro PR fans
Megaforce - I know what I thinking, Goseiger are angels, but Saban is the satan, it's Mega-Garbage!
Ninja Steel - Stick with Ninja Storm instead
Super Megaforce - Super Mega Garbage! They should've called Power Rangers Captain Force! 😂😂😂😂😂

one of the worst things about samurai in my opinion is they made bulk a samurai wanna be and DIDN'T adapt the american samurai story from the sentai series. i freaking love it when bulk is a hero. if they weren't adapting storylines all the time from the sentai version then i would of understood them leaving that one out.

Yup. Pretty much agree. I mean I think Megaforce and Ninja should Switch but never mind. Fart jokes are horrible and cringeworthy.
Only season I think needs to be less hated is Overdrive. Solely because the season overall isn’t great. It’s more like a 6/10. It’s just decent. I think Linkara is mostly wrong saying that it’s worse than Megaforce or Super Megaforce. At least Overdrive didn’t piss on the Legacy.

    • @nexusshark
      @nexusshark 5 лет назад +1

Linkara didn't provide much reason why he thinks Overdrive to be still worse than Megaforce. One of the reasons is that the characters are more likable, but for me to like the characters or even acknowledge them as characters I have to get past the bad acting and I can't. Most of the Overdrive cast are dicks, but I can view that as an actual character flaw. In Overdrive I see bad characters. In Megaforce I see bad actors struggling to act. Also Overdrive was just another season, so it didn't really have any hype to live up to, unlike Megaforce which was meant to be THE season.

While I agree Troy Burrows being a flat as board character is not the fault of his actor, I do think Andrew Gray is partially to blame due to his failure to deliver most of his lines convincingly. Almost every time he spoke, I always thought, “Was that the only take...?”

  • @bendavies7162
    @bendavies7162 5 лет назад +2

What I agree, partly, and disagree that are the worst (Part 2):
Power Rangers Turbo = Partly Disagree
Power Rangers Super Ninja Steel = Agree
Power Rangers Super Samurai = Agree
    Power Rangers Megaforce = Agree
Power Rangers Ninja Steel = Agree
Power Rangers Super Megaforce = Agree
So why is it mostly agree?
The Saban Era (Mighty Morphin - Wild Force) done it better, my favorite from that era has got to be Wild Force. But when Disney took over they only made it relevant from Ninja Storm up until SPD, those series they made in that era were good, but then from Mystic Force it just... doesn't really make it as exciting anymore, from that point on they made the series and the Power Rangers just plain silly. Adding additional series after one and another Super this, Super that. It's just, there's no need for it. From that point on they just made it look crap nowadays, not even Beast Morphers could comprehend. Sorry if this pisses anyone off but it's my opinion.

I think just about anyone with a functioning brain could come up with better ideas for Super Megaforce than the actual writers of that season. How hard would it have been to have the returning Rangers who appeared in "Legendary Battle" to each have their own focus episode? There were also plenty of Ranger actors who were from New Zealand who wouldn't have to be flown in to make appearances either. Cole's actor, who was Deker in the two previous seasons, would have been the perfect cameo for the Wild Force tribute episode since the Mega Rangers got access to Red Lion.

You know that Super Megaforce is bad when they have one of, if not the best ranger costumes and they spend every chance they get trying to distract you with older lesser costumes...
Especially glaring when you realize that Gokaigers that it's based off of is amazing...

I liked Samurai. It was my introduction to the series and I remember watching EVERY episode with my little brother. We cried during the finale because we just got so used to it being there every weekend. Then MegaForce came out. My little brother sort of followed it, but I hated it. From the first episode it was so stupid. He much preferred binging the older series on Netflix. And I’d watch one or two of them - In Space - for example.

I really feel like I need to make a video about why Samurai is far better than everyone gives it credit for. While I do understand your complaints towards the season, I think there's a lot more there that people never really discuss. Samurai is a season I watch at least once a year, because I enjoy it so much, and genuinely would put it in my top 10 seasons, maybe even top 5 if I think about it enough. I know it sounds like I'm a Samurai fanboy, but I genuinely think there's a great season there and I want to help people see there's more than what it's given credit for.

I briefly got back into watching Power Rangers with Megaforce. And...then quickly got back out of watching Power Rangers. I think the only reasons why I lasted as long as I did were, 1) the promise of the mother of all Ranger battles in the first episode, and 2) yowza Ciara Hanna is nice to look at!

Even though Megaforce was a somewhat "call back" to MMPR, I enjoyed it! My dislike PR seasons include: MMPR season 2 (because Zack Taylor left) and season 3, Turbo, Mystic Force (Green Ranger should've been leader), Operation Overdrive, and Super Megaforce (Black Ranger changed to Green with 0 explanation).

I am very torn, you are not the first person to be...well...highly critical of Turbo. And I get it, ostensibly it's not a great season, even I will admit that. However, I disagree that it shook things up in harmless or useless ways. In fact, I daresay it was the reason we got such epic and heavy stuff with In Space a year later. The four part arc from "The Darkest Day" to "Clash of the Megazords" was one of the most epic arcs since Ninja Quest. "Parts and Parcel" was, I daresay the prototype for the In Space episode "Mission to Secret City"
I suppose I'm being picky with my episode selections, my ONLY point is there's a lot more good stuff about Turbo than people remember.
