Great tip - I have a Best Santa Fe easel, and all these things you mentioned have been somewhat less than great over the years. This one tip you give will improve my studio practice a lot. Thank you!

I am glad that you found it helpful! Doesn’t hurt anything to try this

I have had many easels and have come to the conclusion that the designers are not artists as I have had to modify every single one including addling angle iron to the painting holders to avoid the problem you described not having the top and bottom edge covered.
You are a great asset to the painting community Mr Crandall and deserve many subscribers!

Thank you very much! Yes, I do think the woodworking trade is often just guessing… and to be fair, most people who buy easels probably don’t end up using them very much, and are happy enough.

Thanks. I did something similar by installing a french easel pin on the top holder of the easel, and can be tightened but I like your solution better, and may do that for the bottom holder which lacked the wood area for that solution. I almost always paint on panel. Easel makers forgot about us.

I need to do this to mine as well. Just haven't got around to it yet. Great idea.

You’re welcome! Simple, isn’t it? I’ve actually been holding panels this way for years.

Just to be clear. Is this done only to the top or the top and the bottom? Thanks for posting!
