    One of my favourite parts of this movie was how Christine forgave Stephan for how he treated her, but they DIDN'T get back together. They're still friends but they aren't in a romantic relationship. I like that, it's different from a lot of other movies.

      @MythopoeicNavid 8 лет назад +6

      At first I thought I'd just write "It reminded me a lot of the Pepper Potts-Tony Stark dynamic from the first film as well. Pepper, like Christine, was VERY forgiving on Tony. The only difference is that Pepper and Tony ended up in bed together, and Christine and Stephen didn't."
      Then I realized that the RUclips zingers ask for something closer to "it's because he's a cripple."
      Now I'm confused and decided to write both. Choice is confusing.

      Chris DeMore Didn't Tony explain it pretty thoroughly? "I was an ass to her, so she bolted. Now I'm making my post-Vision A.I. a red-head so I can always have a red-headed assistant... alive or post-life."

      Finally! Someone who gets it! Just because a well known superhero has an opposite gender for a friend, doesn't mean they MUST be couple! I have a lot of female friends who I share no romantic interest in. That is the one thing in my list of what I like about Doctor Strange.

  • @TimeturnerJ
    @TimeturnerJ 8 лет назад +607

    Actually, they did not go for the cheesy love story, which I really really appreciated. Both of them accepted that it wouldn't work between them, and they left it at that.
    Thank the Gods.

      Yeah McAdams was pretty good.

    • @Grizzexploder
      @Grizzexploder 8 лет назад +7

      Pros: we don't get another "grounded love interest" like Jane Foster, who is generally more boring along with her fellow human friends compared to the cool, more interesting and badass magic people like Thor's warrior friends like Sif
      We might get Clea as a love interest, which is cool because she has powers and a somewhat interesting background, but she'll at least be more interesting than Doctor Girl (who is actually Night Nurse in the comics, or something)
      Cons: The female actor is even more flat, uninteresting, irrelevant, and wasted in the movie, now that she's not even a love interest

    • @MythopoeicNavid
      @MythopoeicNavid 8 лет назад +18

      Grizzexploder Nah, you needed to show how Strange behaved in the real-world and plus, Rachel McAdam's character (AS the Night Nurse, btw) is somewhat important to show just how different Sorcerer Strange is to DR. Stephan.

      Crash Bandicoot I liked the transition more in the animated movie. For example how he used magic to shave his awesome goatee... and the whole wiping the floor to earn his luxury stuff was awesome among many more awesome stuff. Check out the animation movie if you haven't.

      They did try to explain why he was so fast to pick things up, it was a very quick and small scene. When his material body was sleeping he would use astral projection on himself to study the scriptures. So over time he would get double the work most others would not. Plus he also mention he has eidetic memory so he remembers everything even from a glance. Honestly I think all marvel superheros have that, they mentioned Captain America also has that, maybe Tony stark? Yeah so he may have picked up the spells quickly, but its kinda like surgery, he knows the theory behind it but he will only get better with practice. I think they also said that in the movie as well. He wasn't perfect or all powerful in the movie either, he made mistakes. In the extra scene with thor, that was a year or so into the future so it seemed he has honed his powers a bit more as well. He seemed more confident.

    I feel like the major difference between him and Ironman is Strange wasn't making jokes he was making observations that just happened to be funny where as Tony was intentionally trying to make people laugh Strange was more pointing out how crazy things are

  • @sorra300-
    @sorra300- 8 лет назад +35

    difference in stark and strange is the delevopment of the characters and how they deal with their problems. Tony Stark was charming in the beginning and he always will be, no matter what decision he makes we will always feel something for him often in his favor.
    Dr Strange on the other hand wasn't that likable in the beginning, I remember some people in the theater booing at him when he yelled at his friend. Then cheering on him when he makes the right decisions. He gave a more realistic feeling than Tony does.

    I disagree on the Kaecilius point. I thought his motivation of wanting to end death was very touching when viewed in context with what happened to his family. And you can see with the "insignificant specks in an uncaring universe" line how that resonates with Strange.
    Also, how can you not remember Dormammu? That was probably the most repeated word in the whole movie with the time-bending scene

    • @ramonalejandrosuare
      @ramonalejandrosuare 8 лет назад +17

      My issue wasn't with Kaecilius' motivation, it was with the lack of development surrounding his character. They should have shown him debating these issues with the Ancient One/Mordo, communicating with Dormmamu, or grieving with the memory of his lost family.

    • @blakebleeds
      @blakebleeds 8 лет назад +8

      I think I would have liked a bit more backstory, and seen exactly what pushed him to that point. It wasn't really touched upon, like I didn't even catch the fact that his whole family had died or something, but now that I know that I appreciate him more.

      X-Men are never gonna go back to Marvel, the Fox movies are more often than not kinda lame, but they always make money and continue to show promise for future films as opposed to say what happened to Spiderman starting with 3 or The Fantastic Four. I wouldn't be surprised if Marvel gets the rights to Fantastic Four back relatively soon.

      Use Doctor Strange's abilities to cross over the multiverse barrier into the X-men realm and bring back Wolverine, Deadpool, Professor X, Magneto, and a few others for Infinity War.
      Behind the scenes, hopefully Fox will somehow agree one day to let legit Marvel writers handle new X-men movies, and Fantastic Four movies, instead of the messes they put out.
      The X-men and Avengers need not occupy the same "New York" / same universe, anyway, even if Marvel starts making them. Keep them apart, in different dimensions, but part of the big multiverse, and certain huge events will bring them all together.

    The point of his hands shaking was that he COULD use magic to fix them, but chose not to. IT shows self-restraint and self-sacrifice for the first time in his life. The ancient one used magic to prolong her life, and the dude that sets Dr Strange on his path is constantly using magic for selfish reasons (fixing his spine). Dr. Strange encountered both these people and saw their choices and where they lead them and decided he didn't like what was at the end of those paths. His whole life had been selfish and his path to becoming a magician granted him the wisdom to not make the same mistakes.

    I think the difference between ironman and doctor strange is that doctor strange is super diciplined Hard working and WANTING to change and learn and get better while pushing himself as far as possible while tony seems kind of self destructing and scared of change and needs someone elses help to push him and make sure he takes care of himself

    • @naclynerickii
      @naclynerickii 8 лет назад +13

      Well frankly I saw no similarities to Iron Man and DR. Strange. Evil villains take a page of master sorceroess in hopes to achieve immortality. Dr. Strange was a expert surgeon with a fixed income that worked on the impossible. When he was given another task he gets into a freak car accident that caused major nerve damage. Not accepting this Strange spent all of his money on procedures that wouldn't work and shunned those close to him. He spent the last on a trip to Katamandu on finding about a guy surviving a impossible nerve damage issue that got treatment there. Strange encounters the same sorceress from the opnening and is shown "magic" Strange wants to stay but is kicked out only to be kept and finds himself in a clash between good VS evil. At first Strange doesn't want to get involved but is shown morally why he should and does fight for good. Iron Man Stark built weapons and didn't care and was making bank. When severely injured and taken hostage he finds out his weapons are being used for evil. He fixes his wound and builds means to escape and escapes by creating a weaponized armor. He goes back home inspired to create means to stop his own weapons from being used by terrorists helmed by his own company.
      In a nut shell if you read carefully you'll notice how the two have different morals, achieve their goals, and what the villains want to achieve.

    For a Doctor Strange HISHE, you should totally have the scene where Strange is like "Dormammu! I've come to bargain!" And the time loop keeps going, until they're playing Monopoly and laughing together. And Dormammu is like, "Your turn!" and the time loop starts over again, and Strange flies over and studies the board, then looks up and says, "Dormammu, I've come to bargain." *dies laughing* It would be hilarious! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    (After they've defeated Dormammu and Kaecilius)
    Doctor Strange: "Mordo, aren't you mad that the Ancient One was pulling power from the Dark Dimension, and I used the eye of agamotto to reverse time and stuff?"
    Mordo: "What do you mean? We just saved billions from a life of endless torment from the Dark Dimension. Why on earth would I be mad?"
    Doctor Strange: "Oh, I guess for some reason I thought you would go crazy and try and rid the world of sorcerers, but whatever."

      jayjayx5x1 actually I loved what they did with Mordo. He is a straight to business guy who always follows the rules. He has always been looking through the keyhole rather than opening the door. However when it was revealed the ancient one stole from the dark dimension his whole world went sideways,the best person he knew broke the laws of magic he didn't know what was right anymore so at the end when Strange defeated Dormammu via the eye of agamotto the door was forcefully broken revealing to him the truth that he didn't want to see. Even though he and Strange shared the aim to save the world he believed the right way was to fight(not knowing everyone would be slaughtered) . He didn't believe in Strange's methods because he broke the laws of magic. This is what made Mordo the bad guy he believes now that all the sorcerers are the evil and that he was put on this earth go cleanse it of evil starting with every sorcerer. In fact one could say Mordo isn't exactly a villain because he is trying to do the right thing yet by doing so he is killing hundreds

    I'm going to be a slight bit of a nerd and explain 2 things about the Ancient one, as I see them, and 1 thing about Doctor Strange's personality (MY VIEW, NOT CANON):
    1."the Ancient One" is a title, not a person, just like "supreme wizard". She was ONE ancient one, not the only ancient one.
    2. The Ancient one owns the book of Vishanti, and that is a huge clue to her agelessness and "tapping into" the other dimension; the Vishanti are 3 benign gods of the other dimensions, who bestow blessings and power on the worthy. Now, the fact that the Ancient one has the book and the symbol of Vishanti is littered around the place means that it is at least probable that she is blessed by the Vishanti, who have given her immortality so that she can train wizards to protect the world. Considering the fact that she is so old, AND many students are shown at the temple and yet during the film it is said that few "make it" (some leave like the guy who cured himself, some go evil, many more just die as during the course of the film), it is easy to see how training wizards just to watch them die, fall to the wayside - or worse, turn against all she believes in- must be a terrible burden, one that she would not recommend. In fact, it seems likely that she didn't really want to do it in the first place and had that duty thrust upon her not unlike what happened to Doctor Strange. The fact that she actually is able to postpone her death to watch the snow implies the possibility that she might have lived had she chosen to do so, but quite simply had decided to let go, especially now that there is someone she believes can take her place. All in all, it's a good character I wish they had explored more, and considering the flexibility of death in comic books, I would welcome further appearances.
    3. Doctor Strange used to be a good guy, he didn't start off as a jerk. He became a doctor to save his sister but when he faild he turned callous and selfish, only operating for money so as to avoid any emotional connection with his patients. So in a way the journey of self discovery wasn't what "made him" a good man, it reminded him that he was one to start with, it broke the curse he had cast on himself.

    • @simonshephard3834

      It's Vishanti.Gosh,it's painful to see your spelling mistakes.And the three gods of Vishanti have their own dimension,they are pure white magic! (The comic book Ancient One's long life is indeed their blessing though)Dormmamu and Umar are the two rulers of dark dimension.
      The Book of Vishanti is a book about white magic as opposed to Darkhold about black magic. The book in the movie is about time. Why do you think Agammoto, Hoggoth ,Oshtur dwell in dark dimension anyway? Sorry for being so harsh.

    I definitely agree with you on the Netflix idea. This very well could be an entire series on its own. This movie's plot felt rushed. His life and relationships before crashing his car, his struggle coping with that incident, his training with the monks, his preparation to face his ultimate enemy, and the ultimate conflict itself. All could have used a lot more time to fully flesh them out and show character development. It's very similiar to the Avatar: The Last Airbender. Doctor Strange could used a full series too. So netflix original series or some other network hopeful indeed.

      You don't want to see the original comic, then. • @istjmoneymaker
      @istjmoneymaker 8 лет назад

      Yes, that ties into what I'm saying. The movie is supposed to take place over a course of a year, but there's a BIG difference between hypothetical studied knowledge, and real life experienced knowledge.
      You can study a book all you want, but until you experience a fight in person you don't truly know how to handle it. There's just nooo way he could suddenly do so well against and even defeat that master student you had been both training AND fighting for sooo much longer than him.
      Even if Strange is a natural prodigy. That's why I'm saying that this hero could use an entire show and series just decidated to his life before becoming a sorcery and training during it. If he'd had multiple battles and trials first, THEN it makes a lot more sense for him to beat dormu.

  • @Interestingenough4
    @Interestingenough4 8 лет назад +11

    I thought it was a solid film, 9/10. The visuals were terrific, the humor was used well, and the cast did a fine job, with Cumberbatch feeling like a perfect match for Strange. The story was extremely similar to "Iron Man" and "Batman Begins," but that was inevitable, and they did well with adding distinct touches to it. I do wish they wouldn't have brushed over Kaecilius and Dormammu, but I get what they were doing with them. Kaecilius was a dark doppelganger to Strange, a broken, proud man who looked for truth in the wrong places. Also, I liked how instead of making Dormammu a generic ghoulish monster, they made him a timeless evil essence who can't be truly beat, he can only be contained.
    That said, I'm looking forward to what the future will bring for Dr. Strange. It's clear going forward that he'll be crucial to the MCU (he's already in "Thor: Ragnarok" and "Avengers: Infinity War"). And if they keep it up with Mordo, Mordo could be the next "Loki" of the MCU, a complex, recurring, and understandable villain.

    One big difference is those sling rings don't exist in the comics. He could open those portals just fine on his own. Also he wasn't turned away by the Ancient One. He was pre-destined to be the next Sorcerer Supreme and The Ancient One knew it . He was showing hints of magical potential before even hurting his hands. He could see through glamour spells that he wasn't supposed to. You get a more comic book accurate version in the 2007 animated Doctor Strange movie (which is woefully under-rated, by the way).

    • @MythopoeicNavid
      @MythopoeicNavid 8 лет назад

      Good points. Only thing I don't agree on is the animated movie -- I think a long-time fan of the comics might enjoy it, but someone who never read the comics? I don't think it quite lives up to hte potential.

    • @mastervision5902
      @mastervision5902 8 лет назад +1

      Amanda Pike Well, besides taking the films in a different direction than the comics (which also gives comics fans something new to experience other than what they already know), I think some of those choices were just for drama. If he could open a portal at any time, it lessons the tension, but if he needs an object to do it (which can be lost or stolen), it ups the potential tension of events that unfold. Also, maybe we will find out in a later film that he DID already show signs of being the Sorcerer Supreme, through flashbacks.

    • @amandapike2477
      @amandapike2477 8 лет назад

      Oh, I showed the animated film to a lot of non-comic fans and they loved it, granted it's a LOT more blunt and detailed about the magick and why Doctor Strange was such a jerk. In fact that backstory about his kid sister would have really fit well here.

    • @amandapike2477
      @amandapike2477 8 лет назад +1

    • @mastervision5902
      @mastervision5902 8 лет назад

      Amanda Pike Ha! Actually, you may have a point there. Just like they downplayed Thor and Loki as just being much more advanced in technology, rather than actual gods, then it makes sense to do a similar thing with Dr. Strange. It makes them more palatable to a wider audience.

      Deadpool takes on the superhero sub-genre and spins it on its head, similarly to what Madoka Magica did with Mahou Shoujo Anime.
      Being self-aware of the common tropes and expectations of a given genre, and subverting them and what's generally expected from the more generic, regular works of fiction are what constitute a work of deconstruction, I believe.

      adderous Tilda's amazing in everything she's in. I want to see her in more blockbuster films! Marvel's always snagging talent and using them for only ONE movie -- that's painful! I hope we get to see the Ancient One in more of these Marvel mystics films.

    They should've showed more about Kaecilius and his motivation to his actions. I believe they only said he went to Kamar-Taj because he lost his loved ones, and then he explains to Dr. Strange that time is the enemy because it kills everything. Because of that rush in telling his story, we just think he's evil, and how can he be evil if he wants everyone to live forever?

    • @theraVen27
      @theraVen27 8 лет назад

      he's "evil" because he found out that the ancient was using dark universe power and he wanted to do the same so she banned him. Our side vs their side, simple.

    • @NostalgiaJaden
      @NostalgiaJaden 8 лет назад

      Kat Rockenbach he isn't evil in his mind. He thinks he is saving the world. His motivation are actually very clear. They mention how he lost his entire family. And then he discovers the ancient one has been using dark magic. Decided to do the same. Dormamu tells him, he can make everyone immortal.

    • @YukonHexsun
      @YukonHexsun 8 лет назад +1

      I wanted to see more of his story to, I agree. I'm a big fan of relatable villains, and I think his motivations are actually not all that bad. Depending on your views, time really is the enemy of all life. The problem is that he was willing to solve that problem by letting a malevolent entity get control of earth, and depending on what he's like that could be a worse fate. Sort of like solving the problem of death by letting hell take over earth. But, he clearly means well, and I think his side should have been explored more than it was. There's more to it than "he's the bad guy," even though it felt a bit like that.

HISHE has never failed to both; crack me up, and drop my jaw at suddenly realized serious movie plot holes. I want to say six, It feels like six years since I started watching, and I've never been disappointed or let down. Infact I usually know I've found a friend, if they smile when I mention HISHE. Again just a casual viewer of the show, please, keep up the good work.

They are making sure people stay to watch the post ending credits!" But then the lights turned on after the FIRST end credits, and I was like, "wait, aren't there always two?" and my friend was like, "Not always. I suppose that's why they are telling us this beforehand, so we don't have to stay through the credits for nothing.." Hate how some people were bashing it because it 'wasn't funny' and "its not as good as the other movies".
    First of all, It's called dry humor, something apparently tons of people didn't understand.
    Second of all, ITS A DIFFERENT ASPECT OF THE MCU. Get it out of your fat heads.
    Three, yes, they whitewashed. Could they have handled that better? HELL YES. As an asian does it make me mad? Hell YES. Does it mean you shouldn't at least give it a chance before bashing it? LIKE SERIOUSLY.

    I love these reviews! Please keep at it, you're really good at it as well on top of your awesome animation and voice-work!
    Regarding the film itself, I think seeing how the last Infinity Gem worked was a bit overdue around these parts. So I'm glad they covered that. Yay inter-dimensional travel! Also, maybe all of this was in Strange's head before he died? Like, just like all of Guardians of the Galaxy is in Star Lord's mind since he got institutionalized and had a plant and a pet racoon next to his over-satured kid-like undeveloped 80s childhood that was high on Star Wars, Marvel Comics (by way of Jim Starlin), and Kevin Bacon & Alyssa Milano (even though that could be a bit of a confusion -- remember I'm not saying he never understood the world after the 80s, just that he never grew out of that mindset and is hallucinating everything to make sense out of the death of his mom and his absent dad, yes even Bautista's charater is just the patient next-door who's suffering from some experimental form of aphasia).

    7:30 - 7:52 indeed! Yeah as a psychologist I really liked that message about not really being able to toss our traumas and fetters away, but rather rising above them. Although it definitley happens that some people really grow out of selfishness in a few critical forms, as they simply grow into a degree of appreciating helping other people until they/we lose interest in the more petty or fear-based selfish wants that humans often grow up with.
