Im a single emergency foster parent. My preference is kids under 12, but ive always took teen girls as theyre always in need of place to stay.

If you wanna hear more about people with felonies raising children, look up Jessica Kent, I think she has a very inspiring story. She also shows the other side of foster care where she was the biological mom and her kid was in foster care.

I have no support group. I use Sams/Amazon bulk to keep alot of stuff on hand. Some things I typically have on hand as an emergency placement single foster parent for teen girls are satin satchels (gift bag) full of hand made soap & body butter (Etsy), lip balm, travel deodorant & toothpaste, shaver (removed if kid may be a cutter), gum or peppermint, loofa, & add encouraging tag. I also have multiple journals, teen/adult coloring books (not sex, theyre just more complex to color than kiddy), pens/pencils, teen bibles, various games & puzzle books, various types of hygiene items (soaps, lotions, body wash, brushes, etc), bath bombs. I keep various size panties/socks on hand, tons of washcloths (I buy bulk from Amazon so kid take their rag w/ them), lots of Detergent. I keep various microwavables, chips/cookies/water (cant eat in room to prevent bugs). I have old phone that Ill turn on if kid doesnt come w/ one but remove social media/has monitoring since alot of my kids come w/ phone limitations for safety. I also have 3 mannequin heads w/ human hair (3 diff hair types) so kids can practice styles/braids; also, many are aging out but most my black kids I get dont know how to properly care for their hair & need to learn cost effective ways to maintain. Most my kids come w/ major behavior issues which case managers often hide in order to get them placed although most my experience directly w/ them has been typical teens with bahaviors of the good, the bad, & the ugly; safe/unsafe, destructive, not destructive, clean/not clean, irresponsible/ responsible, lie alot/truthful, theives, cuddly - all of the above.

A single woman in Australia going through the training and almost accredited to foster, you have made me stop falling to stereotypes and open my heart to the possibility of teens. Initially it seems so much “easier” to have littles but your positive messages have changed my thinking.

I took in my step-sister at 13. She came from CA to cold IN with 1 pair of undies, 1 bra ,no socks, no jacket. The following day we had a clothing run with tooth brush, hair brush and everything else. She never wanted to leave my side for the first year, she was so scared I would leave her. She is now 42 years old with three grown kiddo's herself. She talks about those first few week and how it changed her to know I would not leave her.

I don’t know if this will ever be seen, but as a former foster kid, I am now adopted into this wonderful family…I love my parents. It was hard, and I wasn’t an easy kid. I was too quiet and too emotional, but with patience from my parents, I am now doing a lot better. They encourage my artistic abilities. It has been wonderful.

I have plenty of resources to care for my grandchildren and I am under 50... I have 7 grandchildren that ended up being adopted by foster parents... I have no criminal history neither does my husband... the biggest issue is that I live out of the country. They advertise being able to adopt US foster children internationally, but they won't consider me to take my grandchildren. We have adopted one of my grandchildren when I still lived in the US... but now they prefer to spend money on foster care instead of us just paying for and caring for my grandchildren.... The laws need to change...

It shouldn't matter that you are outside of the country. The problem is each jurisdiction is different. I work in California and regularly work with people in other countries. Once I worked with a family coming from another state where the parent didn't even get a chance to get their kids back just because they were undocumented

@@mrs.lilymason I feel the entire reason is that my grandchildren are white... American newborns which everyone knows is the dream for every adoptive family out there... They know they can find adoptive families for my grandchildren. So instead of keeping the family intact they adopt out my grandchildren...

My family just accepted placement of our first teen and her sister. I was really apprehensive because I’m guilty of listening to the stereotypes. However, your experiences and her experiences have given me such encouragement while we wait for their arrival!

Another fabulous interview! I'm assuming the event that Brittany was talking about has probably already happened, but I hope everyone had a wonderful, fun-filled time that just let them be the carefree teens they deserve to be for that night. It sounds like it was a blast!

I didn’t think my first one posted. I love to see the collaboration and overall awesome conservation! Thank you both! Pushing 60 and our last adopted son graduating, 🤞! Still have the desire and thinking about teens. We had a placement for 18 months, twin girls from my preschool class. Reunified and have gotten to see them twice in 8 months! Make those connections!
