Happy Friday! I've received a lot of questions about intuitive eating and weight loss so I wanted to share a video answering this question. Technically, Intuitive eating is not a weight-loss tool, however, intentional eating is! Watch the video for all of my thoughts and then please share yours down in the comments below!
I like the term intentional. I have been spending more time planning and prepping meals so I can fuel and nurture myself. It's been about a month for me and I find it a great help. When the right food is ready and easily available, it's easier to make good choices.
This was a helpful distinction. IE helped me to quit dieting and obsessing about my body. I gained some weight, quit binge eating, and gradually lost interest in what my body looked like. I started enjoying my life, focusing on family, hobbies, other interests. I stopped weighing myself, saying mean things about my body and lack of willpower. It's been awesome. But now I'm wanting to take care of this body better. Not to change it's shape or weight. It will do and be whatever it's designed to, and I've made peace with the changes that middle age brings. But I also want to be able to keep up with my someday grandkids and be able to hike with my husband for the next 20 years, Lord willing. I never ever want to go back to dieting or caring about what my weight is, yet I want to stay active and trim enough to keep up with my active hubby and family. This is the distinction I needed.
I found a eat more when I'm on a diet because I'm always trying to find things that fit the program and I end up eating too much. By the way I grew up in an Italian family and I never had a weight problem and ate macaroni and meatballs twice-a-week
I love the "you enjoy and make you feel satisfied and satiated" I'm lacking the satiation. I'm eating healthy foods, but not having the full satisfied, satiated impact, which I need!!! Thank you, Dani!
Thank you for taking on a topic which can be confusing to digest! (No pun intended!) I will have to listen to your wonderful video again and then decide what to do for myself. I have been on WW (Weight Watchers) for over 10 years and have lost 100 #s which is great because I was at a point in my life where I mentally thought I could never lose any weight! I am a bit stuck now.... I know I can lose weight but I don't want to do all the work to do it because I know how exhausting it is for me to work at being positive and energetic and preparing healthy meals and exercising enough. Also I just love food! I love to eat! Food is my friend.... I have no man in my life and my family is grown.... my life can be very lonely and eating sometimes keeps me company honestly. I am hoping to get past all of this and feel energized to move forward in my journey and lose the other 50#s I need to lose! And from there the other 40 or so more.... but at times I am unmotivated to do it! The convenience foods and most foods are so fast and easy and many times taste better than what is available! It's a struggle what can I say? In addition I have other health concerns that are serious like hypothyroid and worse. It's hard. I am nice to myself.... I try and talk nicely to myself and encourage and positively reward myself.... because me is all I have most days! Your videos and recopies have helped me so much and I thank you for your kindness in making this one! Wow I rambled on and so sorry for that... but this weight thing is complicated! God Bless you and your little family and all of your viewers!
I have been struggling with my approach to eating for a long time. I really agree with the intuitive principles, but find that I need structure with my eating approach otherwise my weight just keeps going up. I am a 65 year old woman who is overweight, but not obese. I have been a member of WW for years and even though I appreciate WW’s support and focus on whole foods and healthy habits, I no longer like the tracking of points and diet mentality that goes with it. I like the idea of intentional eating for weight loss and can’t wait to see more ideas of this nature on your channel. Thank you so much for your great ideas and recipes.
Eating well is a lifelong practice! I also like a bit of structure to help me stay focused on my goals and how I want to feel in the long run (not just in the moment).
Hi Donna 👋 I hope my comment didn't sound as a form of privacy invasion your comment tells of a wonderful woman with a beautiful heart which led me to comment I don't normally write in the comment section but I think you deserve this complement. If you don’t mind can we be friends? Thanks God bless you….🌹🌹
I was a good and healthy individual(athlete),but then started developing all sort of eating disorders,(I blame social media for that) body dysmorphia etc. I thought what I eat in a day videos are helping but god they were just developing my problems. So glad I found you! Already started to implement your advices into my daily habits and I think I feel much better. Only challenge is in the evening when I come from work. Sometimes I’m thinking I’m not even hungry but as soon as I have one bite it become this unstoppable eating patter, it’s like my brain stops working. Thanks for your content ❤️
Well said🙌 Thank you for putting in the time to make this video! What works for me is to alternate during the year. I am intentional most months but am intuitive from August to January (but still aware). It seems to help with the obsession with thoughts of food, calories, and macros. I have lost alot of weight with this approach.
thank you Dani, for this very useful information, I have never thought about it this way and it makes much sense, situational eating is a habit you eat it because you can relate it to the activity you are doing. I want to work on my intuitive eating, and also be kinder to myself, after 40 years of on again off again diets and always struggling with my weight, I finally understood diets are not the solution, the solution is to be mindful and kind to oneself. My new journey is that to be nice to me and to stop the perfectionism that I feel I have to keep to have the body I want, thank you so much
Very excited to be here!! I discovered your channel only 3 days ago. I was on the cusp of making changes without "dieting" for almost 2 years now.. but even in the no diet culture there is still so much information out there to take in which can be overwhelming. Your channel really resignates with me. I'm so grateful! I've already begun to make some healthy changes.❤️
This is so helpful, thank you Dani. Love the “fuel foods” that really spoke to me; I am new to your channel but you are already helping me so much with your concise and informative videos, kind approach to eating better, meal prep tips, and tasty recipes. I recently made your peanut butter banana oatmeal cookies - a fuel food for me for sure and something I will always try to have in my freezer. I can really relate to you!

It is "mindset". It's so easy otherwise to go to the movie and order half my bag or popcorn to butter and salt and then to top it off, again! I appreciate your knowledge, to spread the word, and for helping others learn, Dani. Thank you from the bottom of my heart ❤️

Thanks for this explanation! I thought I was following intuitive eating to lose a few lbs and overall establish a healthy eating habit but actually I am doing intentional eating! I would then like to transition to intuitive eating to maintain my health, which includes a healthy weight. Thank you so much!
This is an awesome video. I'm having to learn how to let food be for nourishment instead of something to fill in the boredom. I have weight loss surgery 13 months ago & boy it's hard work to change the way I think about food. Each day I feel like I'm having to remind myself to eat healthy & limit the junk food to rare occasions instead of several times a day.
this was helpful! i have trouble finding physical hunger cues to the point where i rarely feel "physically hungry" but still crave food. if i end up not eating for awhile bc im not hungry, i feel like im internally restricting myself, so i end up overeating eventually. would you recommend trying to eat on a schedule (3 nutritious meals), or actually making myself not eat until i feel physically hungry?
Hello ma'am, I am Geethanjali from India, your channel is the best. I love all your recipes. So healthy yet soooo delicious. I am in my weight loss journey, I am a student, so I have to cook in between my studies, so your recipes helps me a lot, because all your healthy recipes are so easy to make and satisfies my taste buds very well. Thank you so much for everything. Also, if possible, can you share a recipe on how to make a tortillas with almond flour and how we can store it for a week??... please if you could help me with it, it would be great.
First start by learning the definitions of the word intuitive and intentional....and take your eating habits from there. in the end you should only eat to put nutrients into your body, to nourish your body. That's it. Simple.
As a man, here is how I "intuitively eat"... When I am hungry, I eat. When I am not hungry, I don't eat. When I gain a pound, I think, "Oh, I gained a pound.". When I lose a pound, I think "Oh, I lost a pound."
Thanks, Dani! This was really helpful. I'm still working on the 'mind work' but making good progress. Really good! Time to be set free from diets. To eat to live, not live to eat. I'm 60, would feel better in my skin if I dropped 5-10 lbs. My goal is to be strong, lean, and eat less quantity. I eat mostly healthy, but I still over eat. Ideas?
Great Job, Dani . . . makes sense to me. p.s. I tried the "Soup Obsession" and blew it. I got a bad batch of Garlic and it spoiled it. Will try again later this month.

how do you lose weight without weighing yourself? I have a history of an ED and while I know I shouldn't weigh myself I also have health related weight loss goals.
I just started trying to only eat when I'm hungry it's not going that well. In full disclosure I fasted for 4 days and yesterday was my first day to eat and I was going to try to start eating when I was hungry but I wasn't sure when I was hungry sometimes it seemed like I was hungry but the feeling was there for only a few short moments and it would go away so I decided to wait so I'm not really sure as weird as it sounds when I'm hungry. Most of my life I always ate because it was breakfast lunch or dinner or because something tasted good but rarely because I'm hungry I need to learn when I'm hungry
I know nothing about intuitive eating (not researched). But I always wondered if I ate intuitively, and had food addictions (sugar and gluten are my worst) wouldn't that be a big problem? I guess you'd have to add seasonal, whole, fresh foods (nothing processed). 💖🌞🌵😷
I’m 59 and post menopausal! So does our body need less calories as we age? Finding I eat at Neal times even if not hungry. So mindful eating a good choice?
Can you put some sugar free dessert recipes . I was recently diagnosed with hyperthyroidism and pre diabetes and wanted to find some healtheir alternatives
Hi Dani, I have been watching your videos from 2016 and every since I've followed your meal preps etc...Its helped me loose weight naturally (without feeling overwhelmed or hurt about it) I became I'll in 2020 with a heart procedure and gained 5 stone. Im trying to understand intuitive eating. Is it that we use intuitive eating with intentional eating or intentional eating vs intuitive?
Intuitive w intentional. Eat intuitively, until you need to eat intentional. It’s ok to want to lose weight or change the way your body looks The problem, rather is the mindset around weight loss goals, rather than the weight loss itself
But you can still do IE while wanting to lose weight, right? If you don't restrict anything? I mean, I get it, I hate diet culture, or a lot of it anyway, that says to cut out certain food groups altogether and just eat whole foods. I do have one food that I cut out a long time ago but that was my choice because I didn't like the way I looked and I feel and look a lot better now, but otherwise I don't believe in cutting out any other "junk" foods unless you genuinely want to and not because diet culture tells you to. I get that IE doesn't focus on weight and HAES, but at the end of the day, being super morbidly obese isn't exactly healthy, exactly the same way being skinny isn't (necessarily) healthy either. In my personal opinion, it's not right to promote obesity and claim it as healthy. I don't believe intuitive eating works for everyone. I really like most of the strategies of it, but I believe still that it doesn't work for everyone. I think everyone has to do what works for them.
I guess what I'm getting is eating only when you're truly hungry not out emotions (intuitive), what you're eating to assuage that true hunger (intentional). For me the intuitive part is the hardest and where I have to put my most effort. When you use food to feed an emotional hunger you tend to forget what a true physical hunger feels like.
What you're saying doesn't work for everyone tho, because meal planning and using your logic to decide what foods to eat (being intentional) is not satisfactory for some of us. For example, one food that has all the criteria you mentioned (I like its taste, it's nutricious etc) is chicken. But that doesn't mean I can plan to eat chicken tomorrow because I don't know what my body will want tomorrow. This structure doesn't work for me personally. It's too rigif and doesn't leave space for listening to my body. I preffer intuitive eating because it lets me be more free and actually LISTEN to what my body craves, moment after moment. My body craves different foods every single day, and planning what I'll eat beforehand usually leaves me eating something I don't want at that particular moment (even tho I usually like it).
Sorry, I think this has been determined to create disordered thinking. Weight loss really comes from what you put in your mouth and it is hard to outrun (or out exercise) overeating. One doesn’t want to get in the habit of overeating and then over exercising. That would not be kind to ourselves either.

Absolutely brilliant video. Emotions all woman experience verbalised in one video

I've seen in a couple places that scheduling meals helps to avoid overeating.

how is intentional eating not just another diet? I will just end up counting calories or carbs, and burning myself out, then binging...
I am really interested about intuitive eating, great video! 💗
Glad it was helpful, Ella!
Great Job, Dani . . . makes sense to me. p.s. I tried the "Soup Obsession" and blew it. I got a bad batch of Garlic and it spoiled it. Will try again later this month.
Oh no! I'm sorry to hear the soup didn't work out! I hope all goes well with the next round.
this is the information everybody needs thank you so much
I'm so glad it was helpful!
Just what I needed to hear, again, today. Thank you.
Thanks for the distinctions
This is all so true and at the core of all sensible weight loss programs like WW so how is this conversation with my higher brain about the food I’m planning to eat different from restricted eating and dieting? I (like probably most people here) have had those conversations and have done the planning and all the work before, but at some point the dedication and commitment fizzle away so how is your approach different and how can you help us to remain committed to our personal goals and plans? Thank you!
Hi Dani, the link for the class isn’t working - would you take a look, please? 🙂
Thanks for the heads up! I just fixed that -> bit.ly/TheDontDiet

Hello Miss. It was such a nice video.
Thank you!
how do you lose weight without weighing yourself? I have a history of an ED and while I know I shouldn't weigh myself I also have health related weight loss goals.
Thanks for this informative information👏👏 Dani..
Very logical.
God Bless🙏🌅💃
Anytime! Thank you for watching.
I think use both , but use intuitively intensional. 😂. That’s how I have to 😊
Thanks Dani ❤
I just started trying to only eat when I'm hungry it's not going that well. In full disclosure I fasted for 4 days and yesterday was my first day to eat and I was going to try to start eating when I was hungry but I wasn't sure when I was hungry sometimes it seemed like I was hungry but the feeling was there for only a few short moments and it would go away so I decided to wait so I'm not really sure as weird as it sounds when I'm hungry. Most of my life I always ate because it was breakfast lunch or dinner or because something tasted good but rarely because I'm hungry I need to learn when I'm hungry
Connecting with hunger signals is a practice - for sure! Give yourself some space (and grace!) to learn and be on that journey.
That’s sounds delicious. You must have a great time with your mom
💚 this was very Informative!
I know nothing about intuitive eating (not researched). But I always wondered if I ate intuitively, and had food addictions (sugar and gluten are my worst) wouldn't that be a big problem? I guess you'd have to add seasonal, whole, fresh foods (nothing processed). 💖🌞🌵😷
I think no matter what eating approach we take, it's important to include lots of fresh, whole foods :)
I’m 59 and post menopausal! So does our body need less calories as we age? Finding I eat at Neal times even if not hungry. So mindful eating a good choice?
Such a good video
Can you put some sugar free dessert recipes . I was recently diagnosed with hyperthyroidism and pre diabetes and wanted to find some healtheir alternatives
I love these videos😄
Thanks, Christine! I'm so glad to know you enjoy them.
Now I'm clear now what it really means bc i do wanna lose weight keep it off and have a better relationship with food
Peanut m&M's for the win!!!
It’s ok to want to lose weight or change the way your body looks
The problem, rather is the mindset around weight loss goals, rather than the weight loss itself
@@heartslove8449 thanks for clearing that up for me
But you can still do IE while wanting to lose weight, right?
I really hope you see this. Go to Diets Are Fattening. It is IE and weight loss. Well, finding your happy weight.
I have obs. Can I used this method
Are u gonna do valentine recipes
6:50 in your recap, you say intentional eating on both points. Did you mean intuitive eating for the first point? 💖🌞🌵😷
Ooops! Sorry about that and yes! Good catch.

Observe routine exercise. When you feel you ate more than the right portion just exercise a little bit more. You’ll never be over weight.
Sorry, I think this has been determined to create disordered thinking. Weight loss really comes from what you put in your mouth and it is hard to outrun (or out exercise) overeating. One doesn’t want to get in the habit of overeating and then over exercising. That would not be kind to ourselves either.
So not true.....You can't out exercise a poor diet because it takes a calorie deficit to lose weight.
