  • Going over our thoughts about the ( Still new ) RED Komodo X, and wether or not we still feel it's worth the $10,000 price tag. In this video we showcase a recent project shot on the Komodo X and Laowa Anamorphics, while discussing various features we've come to love/hate, but mostly love.

    Thx so much. Excellent review as always. That said i have the OG and the practical solutions and audio not withstanding the only reason for me to want to get the KX is image. If its better then its worth it. I have yet to really see how it is thought posts i see look great. Would love to get sample footage from a test to see if that is possible?! For me there was always an issue with the image out of the box on the og as it seemed a stop or so under most cameras on the curve in the lo mids and shadow. Maybe this was to hide some of the noise and its true that having to apply nr and sharpening is a process that isnt so necessary on other codecs on other cameras and i had assumed that this was a red raw thing and maybe due to the global shutter. I had always assumed that red would have specific post software to deal with this given its a raw capture or at least a tonne of meta data to help but i just dont see it and its left to resolve to deal with it. Is that correct?! the result is always much better and sometimes stunning. Once its been cleaned and sharpened but i don’t understand why red would leave this process to resolve as surely red know the image best. I keep seeing footage that looks way better posted with the kx but that is often because so many users dont grade the og properly at all imo. Its super interesting that the c300iii is mentioned and i love that camera but it really needs the evf to work for me and that is expensive and although i find the raw fun to work with i dont know if it is as unbreakable as Red. I keep hearing people say that the image in the kx is detailed and thats what i am looking for but i would love to know if that detail is there in the og. By that i mean how does the image respond to sharpening and what kind of sharpening is best. As it is such an essential part of my komodo workflow to clean and sharpen in resolve i just don’t understand why there arent more posts about this process as to me it is essential. I don’t understand why there isnt a third party piece of software that is really dedicated to the sharpening as it feels like a bit of a blunt instrument using resolve or topaz ai when it should be so easy. Even the chroma noise reduction never gets talked about yet it seems to be so essential. Again i have never understood whether the redcine x pro software’s sharpening tools are meant to be better but the range of approaches using mid level detail or face and eye are massive so given how easy it is to manipulate the image with a hundred and one film emulations or now halation filters i just don’t understand why the biggest element to making the image sing is not mentioned more. Maybe i am missing something super obvious and would love to know your thoughts. Btw i use neat video to clean the image and surely this cannot be the best software to do this. Where is ai in all this? Topaz ought to be great but its ui is way too unintuitive and random. Any thought would be greatly appreciated. Also btw i am not a fan of the new io layout and the need to use a micro battery. i have a galvanic isolator permanently connected to the sdi and use the modern film tools horseshoe which is great and the top handle to the side not covering the screen. Again i just don’t understand why anyone rigs their komodo with a top handle covering the screen let alone why cage manufacturers wouldn’t be embarrassed to design something that clearly interferes with the basic camera operation. Just seems so bizarre?! Thx so much. Any thoughts would be super welcome. Keep up the timely and fantastic work.

      I totally agree with you. One thing to keep in mind is that r3d work flow begins with understanding and putting proper exposure to practice when shooting. The stop lights are important but also understanding that when you choose iso with red that when you have deeper shadow areas to shoot in your frame that you lower and light rather than raise the iso which you would do the opposite with most systems. When looking to retain more detail in highlights you use upper regions and lower when you want detail and less noise in shadow. Works well. When used properly, the ogKomodo is fantastic. It does what it was designed to do. It was adopted by many people who took the crash cam and wanted io like a stand alone c200 so now we have the Komodo x that costs much more for the price difference it may as well as had a different name completely. I found lenses and grading to make more of a difference than the cameras sensor output but what ever your budget asks for and what ever inspires you to actually shoot something.

    Everything was cool until bro said “they said the shadow noise was better, you can’t really go over iso 3200.””
    If you know Red’s, you’re supposed to shoot at a lower ISO for lower light and higher ISOs for bright environment. IYKYK.

    After 6 years my Dragon crapped out in the middle of a feature. I am now using S5 with a Ninja V. Might get another Red when it's FF
    + Global Shutter. I do like the smaller Komodo very sleek. PS something is very off with your RUclips render. What compression ratio are you shooting at? No Aces pipeline? straight to h264? Davinci, Premiere, FCPX?

      These were all compiled shooting MQ on KX and c500 in studio. Our final export was ProRes 422hq in 4k. Not sure I’m seeing what you are. What exactly looks off with the render? We use resolve here for everything in post.

    • @YourMomKnowsRealMusic
      @YourMomKnowsRealMusic 8 месяцев назад

      Yes I use Resolve Studio as well. I see some artifacts and some green banding in the shadows. I don't get these in my renders. Are you maxing out your render settings? Sometimes it's best to encode for youtube within Davinci Resolve, if you are going for web export versus using Prores 422hq or 4444xq. Been a while since I did anything for youtube but I remember going through this exact issue. @@NorthwestCameraCo

      Okay so after checking again.. I actually had my monitor collabed for Aces as a refernce to Rec. 709 2.4 Gamma, which will bring out the worst in the footage so back in Imac profile..it looks Great!@@NorthwestCameraCo

      Did you watch the whole video? They stated it’s cons, and sounded pretty annoyed by those cons when mentioning them. Doesn’t seem like they are hyping it.
      As far as fx6 being better, I don’t think so. FX6 has sony AF, internal ND, and dual native ISO, all of which, are not vital features for production work (ND is debatable lol). 1-3 man documentary work, I’m taking the fx6. Anything else, komodo. The fx6 doesn’t have the rigging versatily of the komodo and it can’t get audio without its top handle if im not mistaken. I think it will be more competitive with sony’s next fx camera - hopefully an fx6ii
