When you have two family members both uniquely talented in their own way and when joined together their talents multiply and become something incredibly special. Richard’s talent for arranging and framing his sister’s incredible singing voice created something magical !! They brought out the best in each other Without a doubt !! Her death at 32 From an illness which at that time no one took seriously was criminal. The world lost something way to early that was so enjoyed by people all over the world. She may have been more appreciated in the UK and Japan than she was here. Most people then didn’t know how incredible her ability was to play the drums and other instruments. I’ve listened to people who knew her well at the end were so angry that she was lost to this world. She hid her sickness from most who knew her. Such an incredible tragedy !! 🙏🏻✝️❤️
Kaysee here ... another great song by the Carpenters and another great reaction. I've never heard a voice as pure as Karen's before and since. I get goosebumps every time I listen to this song. I love watching all your reactions, Dan but I have to admit your Carpenters reactions are my favourites. Keep posting them 🙂

Karen hated this song with a passion and agreed to sing it only once. This was it. One take - perhaps the most beautiful vocal track she ever recorded.
@@DanCanReact She might have simply disliked the song. But it may have been due to grievances she and her brother had with the song's writer, Neil Sedaka. Neil had been opening shows for them for a while and had been rubbing them the wrong way. It came to a very public head 2 months after their album "Horizon" was released - when the Carpenters fired Sedaka. The firing netting the Carpenters a lot of bad publicity. They offered Sedaka an olive branch by including his song "Breaking up is hard to do" on their next album - but I don't think their cordiality with Sedaka was ever fully revived. During an interview, years after Karen's passing, Sedaka complimented her interpretation of the lyric.
This beautiful song showcases Karen’s amazing vocals and Richard’s arrangements. The song was written by Neil Sedaka/Phil Cody. Thank you for the great reaction! 🎶🎼🎵🎤❤

Phil Cody songwriter to this song said this....This is one of the few songs that was successful with singers of both genders. Philip Cody told us that when he wrote it, he imagined a female voice singing it. Said Phil: "When I heard Karen Carpenter, I had chills down my spine. As a lyricist, you want that thing where an artist owns your lyric. You can measure success by the amount of money you make off a song, but I measure the success of that song by that particular moment, when she made it totally her own. And it's still great. I sat down one day and I listened to all 90 versions of 'Solitaire' that people have done, and of all the ones that are out there, Karen Carpenter's is still the one that is the benchmark for all the covers on that song."
I was aware of the andy williams version but this was wayyyyy better….a certain Leon Russel said similar about karen singing his songs…..superstar….a song for you….masquerade.
The whole Horizon album is beautiful, i wanted it so badly i conned my stepdad into buying it….he liked this song…..i told him it was only on the album a lie….i was 13….. i had already been hooked on the carpenters for a year after hearing their first greatest hits album 69 to 73 in a friend’s car….not many 12 yr olds owned up to loving the carpenters but i did and still do at 62 yrs now
One of the FINEST Rock drummers played on this beautiful song. He had a natural, otherworldly instinct of what was needed for any most given song he’d been presented with. Jim Gordon is his name. Research and listen to his work and you’ll be beside yourself. Trust me. Check out Jim’s explosive playing on the Mason Williams instrumental titled Classical Gas.

@ingvarjensen1088 isn't that awesome? I've heard the same story. Truly "one take, Karen". That was her nickname in the industry. She did that a lot - pure perfection every single time. @DanCanReact they had to be, they couldn't rely on computers with autotune, pitch correction and instrumental samples etc. They sang for real and played real instruments. How nice to see you with this reaction so special to me
In my younger years (I'm 67 now)
Carpenters was one of my favorite artists
and "Solitaire" my favorite song of theirs
Karen's voice shines to glorious heights
and the lyrics (by Neil Sedaka) are one of my favorites too
You've already seen me here in your reactions to ABBA
Do you know that there are at least three or four points of contact between Carpenters and ABBA?
1) Karen and Agnetha (ABBA's blonde singer)
were both born in 1950, one month apart
(Karen in March, Agnetha in April)
IMHO Karen and Agnetha are the Best female voices ever
2) Carpenters and ABBA met at a television performance in Germany in 1978
3) At that television performance,
Carpenters saw an special ABBA song
and when they returned to the USA,
she performed it live on television
that song is "Thank you for the music"
4) Neil Sedaka, author of this song "Solitaire", contributed with the English lyrics to an earliest ABBA song (when they weren't called that yet): "Ring Ring" (1973)
That is why I give You two suggestions:
"Thank you for the music" (1977)
original by ABBA
cover by Carpenters
