I absolutely agree. She really had one of the best voices ever recorded. Her lower register was the reason I fell in love with her voice as it is wonderful.
The thing I love best about this particular recording is that - Karen hated this song with a passion. She agreed to record it. ONCE. What you're hearing is her first - and last - time ever singing it.
Not enough credit EVER goes out to Richard. Karen had the voice but without Richard's talents for writing, finding songs, arranging, orchestration, keyboards and vocals ( he got "We've Only Just Begun" from a bank commercial! ) The Carpenters as we know and love them never would have existed!
Karen always credited Richard for his amazing song choices, writing and compositions. Always love Richard’s amazing arrangements. Karen always said there would be no Carpenters without him
Thank you 🙏🏻 for the reaction to this Carpenters song. I hope you would also react to a less known song by them, but it is another good one. That song is called A Place To Hideaway. 🎉
This is seriously one of Karen's best performances, but Richard has said that Karen never liked the song. When asked why, he said she never really put it into words. There's an interview online where she talks about the trouble they had recording the song. It took two weeks, tweaking the vocals and the music, but in the end, they felt that there was still something missing. Karen made the comment, "It's very boring. We never got the right feel." There are several songs they recorded that Karen didn't like. "Superstar" was one of them. She said it took her a long time to appreciate the song. Another one was "Ordinary Fool." It's one of her "bluesiest" songs, but after recording the work lead, Karen simply didn't care to continue with it. The work lead was finally released on the "Voice of the Heart" album eight months after Karen's death.
The Carpenters are addictive. O I love this song. Heard it years and years ago but didn't really take notice of the lyrics. This time of the year I pray for the lonely people. To be alone and loneliness is such different terms. Tx Saeed you are so appreciated. Greetings from South Africa
They are very different terms indeed. I like solitude for example, but i am not lonely. Really powerful song. Thanks for watching. Greetings from Belgium.
In addition to being a songwriter, Neil Sedaka was also a singer and pianist. He had a number 1 hit singing "Breaking Up Is Hard To Do" in 1962. Sedaka's second and third number 1 hits were "Laughter In The Rain" and "Bad Blood" in 1975. Sedaka followed the success of "Laughter in the Rain" with a more politically motivated song, "The Immigrant", inspired by the songwriters' parents and by John Lennon, then facing immigration issues at the time. "The Immigrant" reached number 22 on the Hot 100 chart and topped the easy listening charts. Sedaka released a remake of his upbeat 1962 hit "Breaking Up Is Hard To Do" as a slow ballad, and the remake made it to number 8 on the Hot 100 chart and number 1 on the Adult Contemporary chart in 1976. Sedaka was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1983 and has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Iv said it for years. SHE IS AMAZING AT GOING FROM HI TO MID TO LOW .just smooth as silk.she has many different tones and styles she can sing in. which just makes her such a talent. She can portray any tye of feelings in her songs...and what a drummer.very gifted lady.
Gorgeous Carpenters song! I think lots of people go through those feelings. KC singing connects to your soul. KC’s documentary: Starving For Perfection showcases her talent and inner darkness by people who knew her and loved her and other entertainment greats. Richard’s gorgeous arrangements are always stellar and his piano and harmony. Thank you for your wonderful reaction and sharing your heartfelt experiences. ❤❤
Neil Sedaka was a brilliant composer who did a great version of this himself, and then to get the best female singer of her decade to perform it was a win/win for this song.
Written by early 60s pop star Neil Sedaka. In the 70s he had a career revival benefited by Elton John. My fav from 60s is Breaking up is hard to do. Neil redid it as a ballad in the 60s a hit again. He has a show about 50/60s music on satellite radio (Sirius) in the USA. Great lyrics by Phil Cody Melody inspired by Chopin. Neil was classically trained.
Neil Sedaka wrote this, Elton John had helped him make a come back after years of being ignored with no hits. He was part of the Brille Building songwriters along with Carole King and all of those. A tone time he was also singing and putting out hits...then the Beatles came along and took down many like him. Sedaka really proved himself a more than competent song writer totally able to write and even sing modern songs and hots. He was no dummy I If Carole could do it, he could do it. Sedaka was also a fine classical pianist, a sort of pre-Billy Joel and Elton John piano singer, but doing what was required of hm back in the day with simpler teenager music that sold millions...and the Carpenters respected him, they knew who he was. He had hits at the same they released this song of his. Bad Blood, Laughter in the Rain, etc...
When you hear Neil Sedaka sings the original you will be surprised how close the tone of his voice to Karen Carpenter's, especially at the beginning of the song.
This is such a beautiful song that showcases her lovely voice. Clay Aiken does a pretty stunning cover and he sang it in front of Neil Sedaka, who teared up and said he had lost his song as it would now forever be a Clay Aiken song. .
Neil Sedaka is one of the great Composers of popular music. One of his biggest hits was a song called Oh Carol written in reference to a failed love for a school friend, a girl who we know as Carol King .
Neal Sedaka cowrote this song and he sang it. Many musicians sang it including Andy Williams and even Elvis... but with Richard's arrangement and Karen's voice - a masterpiece!
Her voice is like pure honey sprinkled with flakes of chocolate....and vanilla. She had a beautiful 4 octave range (she said this!)....Phil Cody said of the 90 some cover versions of SOLITAIRE, Karen's was the best, the benchmark of all...this is probably one of the best songs where she conveys a story....
And to think she didn't like the song and didn;t want to record it. Richard convinced her and the finished product is fantastic. Karen never sang this at any one of their concerts. Maybe it hit home too much. I think this is one of Karen's best masterpieces vocally. What a talent gone way too soon. We all miss her !
Thank you for this one! It’s always been one of my favorites. Perfect showcase for her vocal range. I was 13 when I bought this album. 62 now and can’t believe people are still appreciating this duo!!!
Great reaction and analysis of a song I can relate to. Karen has a unique way of pulling at my heartstrings and emotions. Maybe I should limit myself to just watching her play the drums, which always brings a smile to my face. NO WAY! Rest in Peace Karen. Nice job sir!
Thank you sir for playing this song...Neil Sedaka, the writer and owned this song said, that all the versions he heard,Karen's version is the one that hit the most...
Karens voice was so unique & sad to know her parents didn't really care about her, moreso their son Richard, who was an exceptional pianist (& singer), yet felt she shouldn't be in the limelight, just the two of them I think. Very heartbreaking. All I know is that I felt so sorry for her. Particularly when someone said to her she was FAT!! So that took off the anorexia. But she really was just an angel, & looking down at her family saying 'I did my best'.💔💔💔💔
Wow, Saeed! I never realized that Neil Sedaka was one of the writers of this song until you mentioned it! Neil is DEFINITELY another you should react to! He wrote and sang many incredible songs from the 1950’s onward. He’s 85 years old now and is STILL performing! He even has his own weekly dee-jay spot on Sirius XM (channel 72 or 73?) where he plays his and other “golden oldies” songs and reminisces about his experiences in the bygone music era and with many of the “greats” he personally knew. Fascinating and fun!
@ , if you do eventually get the chance, here are a few for starters - “Breaking Up Is Hard to Do” “Happy Birthday, Sweet Sixteen” “Calendar Girl” “Little Devil” “Oh, Carol!” “Laughter in the Rain” (sheer beauty & my favorite!) Thanks again! 👍
Often cited as KC's finest ever lead vocal. Fun fact: she didn't like the song! Hit it out of the park anyway, because, well, she was KC... Next after this one...do Someday, from Carpenters' 1969 debut album.
@@stevetournay6103 Richard said that Karen didn’t like the song at all, but sang the hell out of it. I don’t think they ever performed this song in concert.
Karen Carpenter's bottom register was to die for. You need to listen to their version of the magnificent Leon Russell's classic A Song for You. You should also listen to Neil Sedaka's original version of this fine song.

need to look up neil sedaka music he was famous in the mid 1950's then the Beatles came along in the 1960's his carrier was over he moved to london and elton john brought Neil Sedaka back in the early 1970's
This song shows off Karen's angelic voice better than any other, IMO. But her Christmas songs, both secular and sacred, do as well. To wit: Christ is Born. Listen and faith restored!!!!! That's the power of Karen's voice.

Another melancholy song that the Carpenters covered is called This Masquerade. It was written by Leon Russell, and a famous version was made by George Benson. Gorgeous song, no matter who sings it. I hope you get a chance to react to it. 😊
This is one of her best vocal performances. She has a 3 octave vocal range and one of the richest lower registers ever. Amazing
For my soul and heart, the greatest female voice of all time.❤❤❤❤😂😂😂😂

Karen Carpenter had a little over two octaves. Falsetto is not part of the vocal range or tessitura. She has a similar range to Adele or Anne Murray.
I first heard this song when I was 25, I was playing solitaire then and I still am now at 57
