The drumming dynamo K.A.C. The Drummer Girl. The whole concert is a joy to watch. Karen plays drums on Chuck Berry's Johnny B. Goode near the end of the concert. One Take Karen WoW !!!
Great reaction Steven!! Karen (RIP) was spectacular on the skins! Her feel was so natural & smooth - never overplaying, always in service of the song - but it was still complex at times - much like her voice! Honestly, a truly gifted musician, taken far, FAR too soon! Cheers!
Her kit is similar to Hal Blaine's in the studio. She and Hal were very close friends. He rather took her in under his wing at A&M. And she loved his kit! And she wanted one like it of her own. So, he had one made for her, too, and she toured with it. It's beautiful! She ultimately had several kits with one being like a jellybean kit, each drum a different color. Richard still has her kits in his storage unit. I've been fortunate enough to see one of them and also meet him 5x, and even spending time with him in his car warehouse. He's a sweetheart. Very nice and polite, a true gentleman. His wife, Mary is precious, too. And if he talks about Karen too much he'll tear up, every time. He truly misses his little sidekick sister. It's so sad how she passed. And she was so freaking young. Thank you for your reactions to the ever great Karen Anne Carpenter! ❤️ 😊
Wow - thanks, Seton! I've never seen this before.. LOVE it - she's singing higher and faster than usual here (amazing range).. and the drumming is incredible! Much appreciate your reaction! (yep, pure JOY on her face)
You mentioned that you heard that Karen Carpenter had "Perfect Pitch". On RUclips, Wings of Pegasus did several videos analyzing Karen's voice using pitch monitors. The titles of two of his videos sums up his results perfectly.... "Comparing Karen Carpenter's LIVE and STUDIO vocals JUST BLEW MY MIND!!" "If auto-tune was HUMAN, look no further. Karen Carpenter was on a DIFFERENT PLANET." You should check them out.
@kevmodee1866 Karen was comfortable behind her kit. She was very uncomfortable front and center, a few rude comments by reporters and industry insiders about her weight. Started her into wanting weight loss. Remember in the late 60s early 70s Twiggy was considered the hot babe. So body image as a performer was stressed. But behind her drums she didn't feel so spotlighted.
@kevmodee1866 everything rhondaserges5136 said AND her love was drums. She was very shy and NEVER wanted to front the band. She was basically forced to. And the moment she was fronting the band, her weight issues started.
Her mom constantly told her she looked a little pudgy on camera. When a person hears this, especially from a person who should have been lifting her up. So sad!!
I asked my drummer/singer brother what goes on in his brain when he's doing both and he says what brain? I just do it 🤔 I've never seen this video before so thanks to all who requested it 🎶🎵💚
John Farnham's live performance of Help is beyond compare...not taking anything away from the carpenters ' version. Excellent as well. But Farnham's is the gold standard. Perhaps one of the greatest covers ever. No foolin! Check it out!
Hi Steven, Wonderful and insightful reaction to this performance! I learned some more details. Thank you. Little subtleties to the song. The Beatles it was Help! For the Carpenters it was Help. Not as urgent, I’m guessing. 😊 It was incredible, nevertheless. I can’t decide on the version of the song to suggest so I’ll give you both with the merits of each. The song is Mr. Guder from the Close To You album. It was written by Richard Carpenter and John Bettis. Karen was the drummer on the album cut. So it was always her song. She usually drummed on this song in concerts and it contained a solo by her. The bass player in the Help song was Bob Messenger but he was a triple threat. He also played saxophone and for Mr. Guder the electric flute. The first link is to a 1973 Belgium concert. What’s special is one of the cameras rolls over to Karen’s right side and captures her hands in maybe the best ever isolated video of her in full solo action. When Karen spits the camera (they are NOT small in 73, the look on her face is priceless. ruclips.net/video/9wuwLq4MSDU/видео.htmlsi=4TakTylLWvEe2eQS The second performance is also in 1973 on The Tonight Show. This one has been restored and remastered so it looks about as good as a 50 year old video can look. It is full live like the concert above. Karen in full solo mode with Bob on the electric flute. Facial expressions on this one is awesome, too. These two performances are tied in my brain for different reasons. My friend Harvey did the restoration for Carson Productions. Their full 19 minute appearance is on the Carson channel, it has an opening medley, an interview segment with Johnny Carson and then Mr. Guder. Maybe on your own look at that video. I hope you enjoy. It’s a tough choice. ruclips.net/video/WN6y7RJoYv4/видео.htmlsi=HmML3a3JC6iL7FlY On a side note Tori & Jim recently dropped their cover of Close To You. 😊 Joe Edit: Karen was Pitch Perfect, not necessarily the other. Wings of Pegasus showed this and also … Tori is also by his analysis and comparison with Karen. Also Carpenters covered 8 Beatles songs in their run.
💯 FYYYYYRRRRR STEVEN!!! 😊 ANYTIME YOU CAN DO THOSE ( 70-71 ) BBC CONCERT VIDEO CLIPS YOU CAN'T GO WRONG! 👍ELTON JOHN, NEIL YOUNG, JAMES TAYLOR, JONI MITCHELL, AND SEVERAL OTHERS STEVEN, ALSO THE ( MIDNIGHT SPECIAL, OLD GREY WHISTLE TEST, ) OR EVENNNN MUSIC TO VIDEO, YOU GET A 2-FER THAT WAY, YOU GET THE ORIGINAL RECORDING AND THE VIDEO OF IT LOTSA TIMES, ANYWAY YEAH! 😊TAKE GREAT CARE!
When I saw "Beatles Cover" I thought sure it would be "Ticket to Ride." I don't think I've ever heard them do this song before. As always, I love the harmonies of the background singers. My first impression is to love it, though I am pretty fussy about Beatle covers. 😉
An interesting track to check out is their version of Ticket to Ride from their first album: ruclips.net/video/fsgj4xcxXyA/видео.htmlsi=xMtv1iDhm-pKx07I Then listen to the “a capella” version: ruclips.net/video/rFXlJjZJ3Bw/видео.html It’s not really a capella. Instead, it’s the master tape without most of the band. You get some of the underlying orchestration, with Karen’s vocals. Even more interesting is it includes her drums, and there’s a lot more than you can hear in the regular mix. Note that in the studio recordings, all the harmonies are Karen and Richard.
man check out the live video when their were young they had a group call the dick carpenter trio band a song call dancing in the streets karen is impressive on drums as always !
Let's Gooo! She was so talented. Since you're covering the Beatles Oh Darling please 🙏 Also please check out Tragically Hip New Orleans is sinking studio version. Great reaction and Peace out Steven ☮️ ✌️ 🙏
There are two different versions of the Burr Bacharach Medley you might like: the 1970 Walter Reed Hospital show, and the 1972 Australia version. They're markedly different from each other, and they're both from before Cubby O'Brien's arrival, so she's playing them by herself. Either way, i think you'll enjoy them.
My dad was a nightclub entertainer with a partner, and he would sing and play the drums while his partner was on the piano. I sing but could never get how he (my father) could do both at the same time.
Another Beatles' song they covered is "Ticket to Ride" which I think is better than this one. Some will argue and debate about Karen's ability as a drummer compared to those like John Bonham and Ginger Baker, who are GOATs, but I definitely agree she belongs on the same list with them. Two of my favorites "singing drummers" are Don Henley of the Eagles, and his solo career, and Levon Helm of The Band.
G'day mate I know your a drummer and love drummers You might want to look this one up Both are on drums Karen carpenter vs John Bonham Cheers mate 🦘🇦🇺👍

It was a management decision to free up Karen to sing from the front of the stage. Although Karen, by all accounts, hated the idea, she and Cubby worked together well and were friends.
@setonhillstudios They're good but for me I like more groove, soul, and a little flaw and rawness. To me people that play like a metronome are boring and robotic.

Just seems so natural and effortless for her. It is a joy watching people having fun at what they're doing.
Absolutely! 💯
Carpenter's version of Beatles Ticket to Ride is amazing!! Love your channel
She is awesome. You really could see the fun she was having. Great video.

Kudos to Richard, he did the Carpenters' arrangements. This is a simple tune from the Beatles' early years, he transformed it into a tour de force.
Thought you might like it😂She looks SOOooo happy.....c'monlet'sgooooo......
Check out when she does sing during that concert she sings in Japanese and she has a bunch of little kids singing with her
I saw them live many times in the 70's and Karen was ALWAYS fun to watch. She smiled so much while playing her drums.
Hi PB! ❤
Wow - thanks, Seton! I've never seen this before.. LOVE it - she's singing higher and faster than usual here (amazing range).. and the drumming is incredible! Much appreciate your reaction! (yep, pure JOY on her face)

A talent like Karen only comes once in a lifetime, and I'm so glad I was living at the same time to enjoy her abilities........
Wow awesome!!!
If you haven't yet check out The Carpenters doing Please Mr Postman, another Beatles cover and a good one, great reaction
Their entire group was amazing! So much out there!
Thank you for sharing this one! I had no idea this even existed. No idea they had ever covered this song. And what a unique arrangement.
Two sets of drums. A gentleman playing beside her.
That was no gentleman, that’s Cubby O’Brien! 😊
I love their version of The Beatles song Ticket to Ride. You should check it out.
I still believe if they had let her stay on the drums .. she'd still be on earth.
What would that have to do with her Anorexia?

I have believed this for years. I believe even more today than I did when she died.
Her mom constantly told her she looked a little pudgy on camera. When a person hears this, especially from a person who should have been lifting her up. So sad!!
They also covered 'Ticket to ride'.

Yep.. so fantastic.. the other drummer that comes to mind for me - that sings great live is Roger Taylor with Queen.. lol
Great reaction this is a great way to start my birthday today ✌️& ❤️
Happy Birthday!! Hope you have a great day! 🎂
@setonhillstudios thank you 😊

John Lennon said he really liked their take on this song
No, John said he liked Deep Purple's version, which is done the way he wanted to do it. The Beatles version was fast as it was going to be a single.

BURT Bacharach, rather. Stupid autocorrect...

Such a talent

Wow wow wow
Be sure to watch the song from the same concert ''Mr. Guder'' !
lol I should wait until you are done to comment!!!!
😁
I think you're that guy that people say "Don't I know you from somewhere?" You look like somebody I know but I don't know who it is! LOL!!!
Haha 😂
Listen to Superstar. How could thay take the drums away from her!
While I love to watch her play the drums and sing, I didn't care for their version of this song.
Fair enough! 😁
Her brother Richard had to push her to get from behind the drums and sing.
One take Karen

Not an easy band to be in. She was a stickler for precision and would not tolerate any deviation.
G'day mate

Karen carpenter vs John Bonham

Gday mate
I have a question for you being a drummer
When imwatch these older clips
Ive noticed their drum kits seem to be bigger sets then today
Or am i mistaken and just they way there layed out
Also the sound seems different louder and deeper sound
Im not musical at all just how im hearing it
May well be just recording back then compared to todays
Or my dodgy ears just noticed this on multiple different times
With different bands and drummers
Cheers mate 🦘🇦🇺👍
The drummers often chose bigger drums back then but alot of bands and studios are going back to that vintage sound!
Wish they didn't have a backup drummer...don't get it
Phil collins also doubled for some of his songs..
When you have Karen Carpenter, why would you want another drummer? I don't get it either.
It was a management decision to free up Karen to sing from the front of the stage. Although Karen, by all accounts, hated the idea, she and Cubby worked together well and were friends.
Not my kind of drummer she's pretty basic to me ..
Really?! Her touch is so good and alot of those nuances she is doing are so tasteful! And while singing! 🎶
