This was a Christmas 0:41 original penned by Frank Pooler, who was one of Richard Carpenter's music professors at Long Beach State. Years later Richard Carpenter penned the music to complete the song and the original single was released in 1970 and became a Christmas classic
I'm surprised I haven't heard it to this day. 😅 It definitely screams "Christmas classic" when I listened to it. Most of the stuff I heard when I was younger was Mariah Carey or Michael Buble.
One of all time favorite Christmas songs!! The Carpenters' Christmas albums are actually albums and not just collections of songs thrown together. They're classic Christmas albums. Sleigh Ride, Santa Claus is Coming to Town (long version from 1974, there are two different times they recorded it), Do You Hear What I Hear are others worth reacting to...as you know, you just can't go wrong with The Carpenters!!!
Didn't know they had more than this one! Definitely will check them out in the future! Would have done them this year, but I'm limited on time with the holidays...
@@DanCanReact They have two awesome Christmas albums, then various versions and compilations of those albums released over the years since the original releases.
Thanks for stopping by Peter! You have the same name as my late grandfather, I don't come across that name as much anymore 😇 Anyway that was a bit off topic, but I appreciate your support!
Kaysee here ... I don't know what happened to my original comment from when I first saw your reaction video coz it disappeared. Anyways, I'm not a big fan of Christmas songs, but I make an exception for this one. Definitely one of my favourite Christmas songs. It doesn't matter what Karen sings, she nails it every time. Another great reaction, Dan. Merry Christmas to you and your family from me and mine, here in New Zealand.
@@DanCanReact Kaysee here ... thanks for explaining that to me Dan, I was wondering what happened to it 🤔 Just know that I'll always comment on your videos if I see them. I always look forward to watching them.
It's a CARPENTERS song...Don't forget Richard's instrumentation and arranging their backing vocals and the fact that he wrote the music for this song and played the keyboards. It took both of them to create the magic.
This is my favorite christmas song of all time! How can you not appreciate something so warm and intimate! Karen always had that rare gift that it was like she was sitting right in your lap and singing only to you! She had that golden, silky alto voice! Im happy to hear this masterpiece every christmas, still being played on the airways! One of the finest ballads ever written or sung! A forever fan!
I did not, that's why it says first time reaction! I never listened to oldies music when I was younger, so this channel is here to document my journey exploring it! 😁
Guarantee if you play this 3x, it’ll be stuck in your head - a good thing. Still want to hear your reaction to “I Know I Need to Be in Love…” Thanks for your sincerity and Merry Christmas, Dan.
Hi Dan, That is one of the best Christmas songs you will hear. Of course there are other classics but for overall tone and heart, few are in that league. I’m going to give you an obscure Carpenters performance, it generates “I’ve never seen that” responses. That’s what I’m here for. The song is Mr. Guder. It’s on the Close To You album. Karen was the album cut drummer, not Hal. Written by Richard and John Bettis, it’s about their boss Vic Guder, at Disneyland who had to fire them. They were taking crowd suggestions like The Doors, not playing the Ragtime they were supposed to. This performance is in 1973 on The Tonight Show. It was completely live with Karen singing lead and drumming!! It is a restored video by my friend Harvey. He’s been restoring Carpenters videos. So feel free to check here for other requests versus, old videos of poor quality. ruclips.net/video/WN6y7RJoYv4/видео.htmlsi=E4P69Emyl7bxMwvM Now for the answer to your statement about the quality of today’s music. You touched on her once, let’s try again. Her name is Tori Holub and she’s 21. She covers a lot of music from this era and loves the Carpenters and Karen is her idol. She and one of her collaborators, James Wilkas recently (days ago) released their third work. This one is “For All We Know.” It was an Oscar winning best song from the 1970 movie Lovers and Other Strangers. For this rendition Jim plays all the instruments and backing vocals and Tori is lead and backing vocals. Also, NO pitch correction, ever. ruclips.net/video/U5HTPkL7acI/видео.htmlsi=coEukbL_26qWMKIM While we are on the subject of Christmas songs. Tori has 4 Christmas songs released one of which is a video. Two are Carpenters covers, one is her first original and the last she’s the second artist to sing it, so new. Since it’s fresh in your consciousness, I’ll link her cover of Merry Christmas, Darling. Because why not? To me her rendition is second only to Karen and I’ve heard a lot of covers. This was recorded in 2022, Tori is 19. ruclips.net/video/1ZolAU9O7SY/видео.htmlsi=6H39wl15yBOpizeG And if you don’t want to do that, her original; Christmas Again. ruclips.net/video/V7tDu9Gshds/видео.htmlsi=Krl6KOcljR1V8CD1 This song has a bit of a story. The cowriters of the song, Steve Eaton & Donnie Demers, had the song finished but no voice to sing it. Then last year a friend sent them a Tori short Carpenters video. They reached out and the result is above. Oh and Steve, he knows a great voice when he hears one. He wrote “All You Get From Love Is A Love Song” for the Carpenters! 😊 It was one of their last Top-40 hits. There you have it. I hope you find something interesting here. Merry Christmas! Joe
Nice to see you here again! I'll definitely take note of this for a potential future video, I really appreciate you sharing this and taking the time to write me a message 😁 Hope you have a Happy Holiday!!
This is a lovely song. I do really think you should react to Do They Know It’s Christmas. The selflessness so many people gave…which led to we are the world…which led to Live Aid. ❤
I'm not sure I can react to more Christmas songs this year like I was hoping to (too much going on), but I will next year if anything... Thanks for watching Sandy!!!!
Also, have you heard any classic British Christmas songs? Check out these ones... Slade - Merry Christmas Everybody, Wizzard - I Wish it Could be Christmas Every Day, Shakin' Stevens - Merry Christmas Everyone, Paul McCartney - Wonderful Christmas Time, Band Aid - Do They Know It's Christmas, John Lennon and Yoko Ono - Happy Xmas (War is Over), Elton John - Step Into Christmas, Wham - Last Christmas.
You ought to look for and listen to this song with Karen's original vocal from the 1970 release. Her younger interpretation is a little less polished, but FAR superior, with a much better interpretation of the emotion behind the forlorn lyric.
Since the 70s, this song give me goosebumps every time I listen. Flawless and timeless! A must in my Xmas playlist year after year. 🎄🎶🌟
This song is SO beautiful. Loved it so much 🥰 Definitely listening to it next Christmas!
Karen & Richard did all their own background vocals ❤
That's what sold me on listening to more of their music, they are such a talented duo ❤

You forgot her Ave Maria, WOW! And the unique song Little Alter Boy, a gem. Actually every song on the CD, A Christmas Portrait is top tier.
Every syllable sung crystal clear.Richard provides fine backing vocals and arrangements.

Such a great Karen Carpenter song. She’s such a great talent and miss her!
Richard wrote the melody and Frank Pooler the lyrics.
❤❤
I miss her as well, and I didn't even get to see her back when she was alive! She needs to make more music, she was such a gem 🥺

Dan, Their Christmas album on CD, A Christmas Portrait is amazing, 21 songs. Her version of Ave Maria is next level.
Can't wait to listen to those too in the future!
Karen really had an angelic voice and these were the days of really good music unlike today.
Yeah, music really degenerated in quality over the years...
A famous musician once said that you could tune musical instruments with Karen's voice. Perfect pitch.
That's crazy, but I believe it. She's so talented.
