Yess! Join the ProGauntlet hype :p
I have them for a couple months now, used them in the dutch national championships for longsword all the way up to and including the finals; safe to say they can withstand A LOT. However they are not invulnerable ofc. I have mine in the process of being repared as during a 7 hour HEMA demo of continually on and off sparring, one of the attachment points for the bands inbetween the thumb and pointy finger broke, and thus the thumb isnt held in place with a band anymore. Theyre amazing gloves, don’t ever wanna go back! Just be sure to have a spare set of gloves in case something comes up that you cant fix on the spot. But that doesnt come up often, and all gloves can fail… believe me, I broke/cut someones spes heavies 2.0 in half with a normal federschwert during sparring…
Also, skall, get that finger fixed that pops out, a friend of mine had the same issue, it falls under warranty, and if you grapple it might pop out when grabbing a sword or smth (this can always happen btw, just, shouldnt happen easily, so be careful of that), and if your then hit inbetween the gaps, or the finger ‘locks’ because you cant stretch it back, that can be potentially dangerous I guess…

It's good to spar without protection sometimes in anything. It adds a new level of combat anxiety and threat that any combatant needs to learn to control are conquer. There's a reason why military will eventually graduate to throwing real ammunition towards recruits in cover in training. I know from experience that it is very important to get used to your life being in danger if you are going to be training any real arts of deadly combat. Training knowing you are 100% safe from harm is not sufficient enough. Training with your own life at risk is very important and helps the warrior to understand and respect the fact that they are learning the art of killing and possibly being killed.

In Germany, in every medieval club where swordplay is a thing, the base of protective equipment everybody needs is a good gambeson, head protection and really good and thick gloves. (hockey gloves are the ones mostly in use)
Even when doing show fights on fairs, hand protection is more important than looks and authenticity.

    • @kodain
      @kodain 2 года назад +2

@@peterschack570 If I'm to borrow from Meyer, he divided the major guards into four: Ochs, Pflug, Alber, and Tag (Ox, Plough, Fool, and Day). Ochs would be similar to Posta di Finestra, Pflug is ehm... imagine Posta Breve except sword is held more to the side. Alber we discussed above, and finally Tag, which is Posta di Falcone.
From Ochs there are sub-guards: Schlüssel (key), Hangetort (hanging guard), and Einhorn (unicorn). From Pflug there is Eisenport (iron gate) and Langort (Posta Longa). From Alber there is Wechsel (switch?), Nebenhut (side guard), and Schrankhut (cupboard guard? Not sure on that one). Finally, from Tag there is Kron, Mittelhut (Middle guard) and Zornhut (Posta di Donna).
I haven't studied much of Meyer, so I'm mostly just posting what I can find online. Low guards are indeed not as common as the high ones, and I think that's because German fencing has a more aggressive doctrine, whereas the Iberian is more reactive and looks more for reads and counters.

He's just playing around, looked like the second sword was longer than you'd want, that's why sword and dagger is a thing. If you have two medium length swords or a long and medium, you have to do a lot to keep them from tangling up with each other and it limits your mobility because you can't close distance quickly for parries and thusts.

Just got mine from Fait d'Armes....they had 2 in stock when I looked them up....ordered mine....took less than a week to get it...yep, expensive, but virtually no wait. Talked to other American vendors and they all said that the wait was months long (when they bothered to answer at all). They are damn beautiful - and, a little stiff....and heavier than I thought they'd be...and, I'm glad that this review noted that they "broke in" a bit and loosened up...I'm thinking that these things are going to really kick ass. Less mobility than the lacrosse gloves that I've been using (they offer sub-par protection - plus, they look manky)......but, as they break in (and i get used to the weight, etc), these gloves are going to rock. Thanks for the review...

Internal padding is tricky. It can be made out of such mushy soft foam or gel that it insulates you from pretty much all sensation, but that hurts your control too. If you dial back the cushioning a bit to allow for more sensation of grip pressure, then you open yourself up to more sensation of pain too. There's a similar issue in running shoe midsole materials.
I think it would be advisable to alternate practices in your best mittens or gloves like these. Recognize the differences in sensation between them when doing the same moves. Identify whether your fighting style needs more protection (mitts) or more sensation (these gloves). And choose accordingly.

My final review will be coming soon. On to testing a second pair...they have many flaws, and mine, plus other people I train with are falling apart...and too difficult to fix yourself. The fingers slide out often, and mind fit correctly. They move so much, that I have wrapped the tips with hockey tape to assist keeping them in. Medium would be a bit small overall, but lock the fingers in a bit more for me... I think, sort of take the tighter fit to lock the fingers I am thinking...? The knucks problem you displayed is not just on your glove, they slip out often, happens on both gloves that I have tested/own. It happens so often now, I am either putting my fingers back into the tips or fixing the knuckles every 5 or so passes.
They are ok with grappling, but that top guard has a back edge that snags on everything when you try and pull your hand out of any sort of grapple or tight spot. The cuff is protective and works, but does not work with any of my forearm guards. I leave the forearm fastening open, so it just flops around to give enough space for my forearm guards/coat. With a smaller guard, like a destroyer Mod's forearm guard, they work well.
Main strong point on theses is the mobility. I like them, and use them still, but I need to be real about them.
Anyhow, a few more training and sparring sessions and I that will be enough time for a follow up review on my end.

A french HEMA youtuber made 2 videos about thoses gloves. I'll try to summarize it and by advance sorry for my English.
The first time he got his hands on and after 1 year of use. In the first video during a sparring his opponent managed to (accidently) trust his sword between the protection on the back of the hand and that made all part fall off.
On the second video he explains that before the 1 year mark he had to send his gloves back to the compagny and they were replaced because they were too damaged. For him the issue is that lots of parts that supposed to keep the gauntlet together (like below the fingers) are really too fragile and can't handle too many use. He also speaks about an issue he had during a sparing, his opponent managed to hit again on a weak spot of the gauntlet and really hurted his hands for week (right on the the knuckle plate for the pinky). He also says during his video that one of the "major" issue with those gauntlet is considering the gauntlet is made with multiple small parts, if you have a problem it's really hard to solve it by yourself.
His youtube channel his named "Entrer en Lice" if you want to take a look by yourself.
And while I'm at it, thanks a lot for your work I'm really thankfull for all your work and I would love to support your channel if I could.

We have a pair of these at our club with one of our most experienced members. Long story short, he doesn't use them. The problem isn't the protection or materials. its the connecting bands and pieces that break during even light use and the complexity of replacing those pieces. We all agree that they feel great to move in and are very protective, albeit slightly heavier than other options, but none of us could see using them in an competitive setting without fear of a malfunction. I loved them when they first came out but after seeing his experiences with them (most of the time spent at the bench repairing them and not actually sparring) I'm probably going to wait for a second iteration. In the meantime, we've had several members adopt the SG Infinities and those have worked awesome.
I really wanna see PG get this right but until they come up with a solution for the durability I'll be staying away and would advise others too as well.

Totally unrelated to anything, but a friend of mine was at a pirate fest once. They and one of the bar maidens had a duel, but communication was sadly lacking. They may have won, but nobody mentioned anything about live steel. Everything wound up ok, though, and they got a badass scar just across the lowest part of the ribcage. Was a lot of fun many a drunken night.
    Awesome gauntlets, though.

    • @SomeRandomMario

@@spy00at aside from weight. the material and equipment cost needed to switch from the polymer they are using to a metal filament printer would be insane. especially since realistically it's a niche product. metal printing also takes a lot longer to finish and the software available isn't as user-friendly as the big three for plastic 3d printing.
perhaps if the sales for the ProGaunlet exceed expectations then maybe ProGauntlet v2 or v3 might be a metal variant but as Skall said in the video, if you're needing more protection for sparring then your sparring partners are doing something wrong.

Wow this is so much different opinion than the AHF review. As I recall they said they are so heavy it had big impact on their fighting ability. Next, the plastic finger tips on the inside prevented "feeling" the sword grip like in other gloves, and finally - the rubber bands holding everything together just kept snapping or getting cut off with swords... Did Progauntlet improve the gloves or... What's happening here?

Those gauntlets of yours look really good. The only better test I can think of is to actively use them to block more. Also, I've personally found that one handed sword wielding against two handed, is that it is best to use your wrist mobility to your advantage. When blocking a strike, use the flat of your blade to catch the blow. When allowing your blade to drop twords the ground, use the weight of the blade and it's center of balance as the untouched focal point, that way, all you are doing is guiding it, rather than doing all the work yourself, even if it means lifting the blade from your side, with the point still twords the ground, and using the incoming blade to start the momentum of the return volley while stepping into your strike around the one you just blocked and redirected away from you. Sorry for my tactical and strategic mindset running on. I may be a complete newbie, but I've still got some natural talents might be useful right?

get some silicon caulk and put small dots on the gloves for better grip. it won't last over time, but you can replace the dots easy enough. how good this will be will be a function of your precision caulking skills.

Even though I don't participate in this sport, I checked out the price and it is actually very reasonable. You'll pay around 100 for a decent pair of motorcycle gloves, so 400 for something of this quality and great design is well worth it. I was expecting them to be more.
