    7:09 You're wrong. Any and all OGL legacy content will not be full-on removed from Archives of Nethys. The plan was said to put all the legacy content in it's own section of the site, which you can access using Shelyn's Corner (the little palette and paintbrush icon on the top right of the website).

    I would love if Paizo released a "change sheet" for the remaster listing out all the changes. Hell, they could charge $20 for it and I would buy immediately. And probably also buy the book just to show some support but a condensed changelog would be INCREDIBLE.
    Also, commenting at the end of the video to boost retention rates so Nonat can buy his chicken nuggies.

    Great video. On the topic of death in TTRPGs, I'm a 43 year old man and I still remember the first time a character of mine died. It happened back in the early 90's. People get attached to characters but sometimes a character death makes that character stand out. A little over 3 decades later I still remember him over the many other PCs I've rolled.
    Don't make death cheap and your character will live on even in death. :)

    Nonat, *supporting Paizo* alone would be reason enough for me to buy the books!! The fact they stood up and said “hey, we’ll do something constructive and support everyone affected” in the wake of the OGL, and that they are so passionate about their gaming community (and it is a community- even with the (strongly) varying opinions) that they say “here, you don’t have the money, have access for free!!!” is reason enough for me to set aside money of my own to want to buy their books and products where I possibly can!!! Also, PF1e was my introduction to the gaming world so they always have a soft spot in my heart.
    Just so you know, you’re not alone in your opinions 😊

    Quick note on the Death mentality.
    Another thing to keep in mind is that Chainmail, 1e and even AD&D were fundamentally War Games. At the end of the day it was essentially EXPECTED that you'd have to die and re-make characters multiple times through a campaign. Moving into 3e and beyond, the community focused shifted more towards that roleplaying aspect and people started getting a lot more invested in their characters.
    Not saying old-school games couldn't have good roleplay, but there were just different expectations in earlier editions.

    • @arcady0
      @arcady0 Год назад +7

      Yep. As someone who started back in those days. It was almost a revolution to put a name on a character. As I noted in another comment, this is a fully viable character description from those days: F3 15hp 15,12,11,8,13,7 chainmail, +1 longsword. That's close to what you'd actually find in the back of some adventures. That era began to pass in the early mid 80s. I think computer games had a lot to do with this, combined with novels like Dragonlance. After the Dragonlance novel was the very first time I personally saw players show up wanting a story, or having a backstory. Even outside of D&D. character depth was rare. Computer games began to and now even further have replaced the 'game challenge' aspect - leaving the story and 'role' part for tRPGs to perfect.

    • @vladd6787
      @vladd6787 Год назад

      Back in the 80s playing AD&D I always had a backup character and my playing character had a will leaving everything to the back up character.

    • @watcher314159
      @watcher314159 11 месяцев назад

      And now death is a fundamentally counterproductive mechanic. Part of it is the greater emphasis on roleplaying, part of it is because character creation is a much more involved process, part of it is because the way the game is balanced death really doesn't have any mechanical cost (leaving the main cost a matter of roleplay). The long and short of it is, the risk of death is far, far more trouble than it's worth, even if the dice say it's only a 1/10000 chance. And so long as the chance is non-zero, it has to be extremely low precisely to avoid ever having to deal with the hassle.
      Like, death mechanics have changed a lot over the last 50 years of D&D/PF, but they've changed a lot slower than how people actually play.
      And, notably, death is a solved problem in other systems. Fabula Ultima is a good example of one of the main ways modern games do death right. When you go down, you get a choice rather than messing with [Wounded] and [Dying]. Do you survive at some steep (and permanent!) but narratively appropriate cost? Or do you go out in a blaze of glory?
      No yo-yo problem, no unwanted narrative derailments, no need to be overly concerned about TPKs, guaranteed tension without actual risk...

    I fully agree about the emotional attachment to the character. It takes me at least a week to build the character mechanically, and to develop the personality I am going to play as. Are they a cold-hearted fighter that only cares about coin? A generous rogue that gives most of their earnings (illicit or otherwise) to the local orphanage that they were raised in to help others? I think my prep times makes role-play of the character that much easier, but not everyone is the same. But I prefer my characters to be more memorable. If years after you and your friends finish a campaign and they are still talking about your character and what they did, that is good role-playing IMHO.

    The old school vs new school blew my mind. I come from the good old days of 3.5. That's why I love pathfinder 1e the most but yeah I totally started with meat grinders or one shots over a huge invested game. That was like a light bulb

    • @velinion1
      @velinion1 Год назад +4

      3.5 is pretty new-school compared to 2nd where I started, which in turn was compared to first.
      I remember looking at an adventure for first edition that provided some "pre-built" characters in case there was a new player joining. They were literally just the Str, Dex, Con, Int, Wis, and Cha stats and a single letter to denote class. Everything else could be determined from that. So if you died, you could be back up-and-running after rolling 3d6, six times, in order and figuring out what class best suited those stats. 1st Ed, Elf and Dwarf were classes, and there wasn't even a separate race entry. XP didn't exist, and you leveled by how much gold you'd gathered over the adventure.

    • @arcady0
      @arcady0 Год назад +1

      3.5 was an easy highly survivable game compared to the 'old old school'. "Back in my day" I bought the AD&D 1E books off the shelf at a Sears in the toy section where they were new products. But before that I began with AD&D Module S1 - which had a section in the book full of replacement characters. Back then you could get all the info needed for a character into a single line of text about the size of a sentence. Something like this: F3 15hp 15,12,11,8,13,7 chainmail, +1 longsword. So the book had something like 60+ of them on a single page and a win was if you could make it to end before running out that sheet. Something few groups could manage. But people just don't play like that anymore. Somewhere along the way our characters got names...

    7:09 Pro tip for Archives of Nethys. The settings in the upper right (paintbrush and easel icon) allows you to switch between preferring Legacy vs Remaster content.
    15:32 I am converting my DnD group over to PF2e and learning to DM. While learning the rules of PF2e I have began to learn a lot more about Paizo. Their stance with the creation of the ORC license + publishing the rules on Archives of Nethys + their transparency with the community. Speaks a lot about who they are as a company and I really feel like they truly care about the community/their customers. Which is a rarity in the modern world that we live in and most companies just see you as an target with the goal of getting you to pay micro-transactions until your credit card bounces.
    Also, a 4th reason to buy the remaster. As time goes on, there will be small changes to the game. Even if it is just spelling corrections in the books or slight clarifications to rules. The remaster version is the current rule set and will get those updates. I'm not sure, but I would guess that most/any of those changes won't get pushed back into the OGL version.

    On the "yes" side, I've heard a lot about the good layout, I don't have any previous books so I don't feel I'm "wasting" anything, and I'd like to support the company that makes it.

    I'd love to buy the books. I've been collecting the books up to Rage of Elements, both hard cover and pocket edition, but with four new books releasing each at around 80 dollars, that's just way too much for me to spend on collectors items right now. I'm not working my previous job which is what funded all the books in the first place. This might be the first time that I get the pdfs instead of the books.
    I'm really grateful that Paizo lets us access the rules for free online, not to mention Foundry VTT gives all official content up front with a one time fee for the software itself. I do appreciate that it doesn't feel like I have to buy the books, and sometime when I feel it can be afforded, I'll likely purchase them piecemeal to continue expanding my collection. It feels like Paizo doesn't want payers, they want a community, and that means the world to me. I hope they never change.
    Edit: Of course this isn't to say that we shouldn't support Paizo when we have the chance. They do need to keep the lights on after all.

  • @Bryito

    Also kind of to build on what you were saying about the character death now this is just my personal experience When the GM is writing the story for the game, they also incorporate the characters back stories so constantly killing the characters means now new things, and old things have to be swapped around or removed and added so it is also taxing on the GM now of course this is more for someone running a homebrew campaign, but it is still something we should look at as well

    I'm a big fan of change, especially when it's refinement, or establishing a new identity with verbiage. There's a lot of people on the internet who are very vocal about disliking change, and to those people I'd just like to say, "you'll live." You can still play the old version. New modules that come out can be translated to legacy rules - just like how old modules I want to play will need to be translated to the remaster rules.

  • @HuntersCanFly

    15:20 I wanted to say one thing on the mindsets of characters should die. I'm primarily a DM that does allow for my players to die and don't pull punches when they do.
    The way I've learned to handle players death is by leaving it up the players to undo the death. Unless the world I'm running has a strict for story reasons players cannot be revived, I will have the group players earn/quest to bring a PC back. Granted i can do this because my group is close and they're willing to go through that for other players, but we do play (for the most part) high fantasy games where magic and resurrection exist.
    What i am against is INTENTIONALLY killing players because that's what I'm supposed to do as a DM, because that I agree doesn't not add to the game or the story.
    I only make this comment because I feel like there's some kind of taboo about characters dying and DMs tend to avoid making death be a part of the story. Though i know thats not everyone's style

  • @LordTridus
    @LordTridus Год назад +2

    The reason i dont like death in my games is because my character gets invested in the story. Killong them undoes that and forces me to start over except we are halfway through the campaign. It just kills interest as i lose all the story connection from before.
    If I'm playing in a campaign that is trying to be lethal, I am not making characters I'm invested in or will feel upset about losing... But that just makes the whole thing less fun.

    My two cents on death mentality? I love the threat that death provides and how I like its presence motivating roleplay over tactical play in my games. If you're worried about your wizard dying you prepare different spells than if you're a glass canon with many fireballs.
    I had a little flavour of players describing little scars their character gets up with after being knocked down with a significant enough hit. Lasting injuries in a dangerous setting can drive grounded roleplay.
    If NPCs fear death, your players might too, depends what kind of a game you want to play

  • @RoanRat

    I did grab the PDFs because I love the game, even if the group I'm in is only two folks right now with an occasional and unreliable third available. Hopefully getting back the reliable player/gm we lost a year ago, but they had a valid reason for having to put a pause on their gaming so we've been supportive of that choice. Actually working on two different character ideas right now since we're going to try running a new game if our occasional 3rd gets a schedule worked out... Besides, character concepts can be tweaked as needed if and when a for sure game pops up.

    For me, (death and dying), it all depends on what kind of game you're playing. Sword & Sorcery, Dark Fantasy, Standard Fantasy, Heroic Fantasy, etc. Sword & Sorcery and Dark fantasy, yeah, death may be permanent, or have severe consequences for "violating the natural order". There are times where my friends and I prefer playing Heroic Fantasy, where your characters are heroes, so if they're going to go out it needs to be epic, and make a great story. :)

    Let me answer your reasons, my friend:
    Not:
    1) I still remember D&D 3.5. I BOUGHT D&D 3.5. Do you think a slow deviation is stopping me from buying Pathfinder 2e Remaster?
    2) Funnily enough, the cost in euros is lower - and I'm european. Plus, it's gonna be a christmas gift, so I'm not even the one who's gonna fork the moolah.
    3) ...you don't have as many luddite players as I do, now do you? Two of them are gonna use PDFs and/or Nethys, tops.
    Do:
    1) You're preaching to the choir. I already had a little advance through Rage of Elements, and it piqued my interest.
    2) Sadly, this is no reason for me - I am the proud owner of humongous monsters like The World of Synnibarr and the Fallout RPG, that are just as big as the original PF2e book, if not larger. Size is no problem.
    3) This is a decent reason, but let me answer it with an even better reason: it makes WotC angry. And the quckers deserve every disappointment they get.

    The death vs. play story thing... it's because in AD&D the character was not supposed to be an avatar of the player. It was like a playing piece in miniature wargaming or in chess... or in Trouble 🙃 In fact we usually rolled up new characters when playing a new adventure module, it only took 15-30 minutes to create a new party. To be honest the notion that a PC ought to be a mirror image of the player sounds more like a neurotic quirk in that particular player than a feature of the game.

    15:40 reasons like this remind me of a somewhat fun saying:
    How do you make a small fortune with Pen&Paper? You start with a large fortune.
    It'll likely take some time for me to buy the remastered rules... alone having them as pdf available (shipping the rules over to Germany would be to expensive) would help a lot once groups start actually shifting to the available remastered content. Discussions already happen... mostly around that 1 rule but they happen.

    I got the sketch cover versions of the GM Core & Player Core.
    Yes, it was expensive, especially here in Australia, I simply chose to support Paizo for their work on ORC to compete with/replace the OGL.
    It's also going to be my first ever foray into the Pathfinder Universe/Multiverse, & I really like what I've seen in terms of them outlining what you can & cannot do.

      As for your Sidebar 11:54
      The way I see it, the new death rules actually, allows for a much more realistic viewpoint in terms of... "Would I do this if it was actually me?".
      Yes, it's a fantasy game, we all know the main reason as to why we want a story, is so that we can LIVE in it.
      By making death a lot more viable, we now have to consider our character's actions more delicately.
      5e has very much a similar issue where death isn't really 'scary', 2e Remaster, oh boy! BRING! IT! ON!!!

    Regarding death:
    I hate player death. But I think combat is exciting because it exists. Losing a character you spent hours on sucks, but it’s a lot of fun to survive by a hairs breadth because the DM fudged a roll or teo or three to your benefit and you spent a hero point to apply the rule of cool. And it’s only fun to survive like that because, if you didn’t think on your feet and convince the DM to let it slide once again, your character would actually die.
    I love theorycrafting new characters, and there are a lot I have yet to play. But because of the effort sunk into each one, their backstories, be they badass or goofy, and their role in the party, from the healer to the powerhouse, I would much rather see them fade into the background of the world by leaving the party and goin on their own way, rather than dying and being lost forever.

    For the moment I'm sticking with the old rulebook for my group, although for different reasons. With my group, two of my player's classes aren't in the Player Core, barbarian and swashbuckler. So I don't want to transition my game until I have remasters for everyone at the same time. I know they completely redid the witch, but it still really surprised me they took barbarian out of the player core. As to the price, I think it is ridiculous how much books are today. Pathfinder and D&D alike. I know inflation is insane right now, but it's hard to see going from a $70 core rulebook, to $120 for the same info split into two books. I'm going to pick up the remaster as I like what Paizo is doing and want to support, just remember 1st edition AD&D player's handbook for $12 and when 3.5 came out they were only $20 for each core book. Not that much of an increase considering there was 26 years between when 1st edition came out and the release of 3.5. Compare that to 16 years between the release of 3.5 and pathfinder 2e (before remaster). Then 4 years between pf2e and pf2e remaster.

    Went to the comment section right away to read, because old content being removed from Nethys just sounds plain wrong with how it operates. 1st Edition still exists on Nethys, and in this game you can find both the legacy and Unchained classes, so removing Legacy 2E would be a huge precedent on multiple account.
    Tangentially, I suspect the Remaster is not called Unchained just so the name remains available in 5-10 more years if they need a "second Remaster". Because so far, that's exactly what the Remaster looks like: a 2E version of Unchained rules. (Which is a positive, BTW!)

    I will be getting the Player and GM cores. I'm relatively new to 2E and I like physical books, just held off getting the core for the remaster. I am disappointed that due to the rush to get the new ORC/non-OGL books out there's a lot of sloppiness in rules and legacies of the old core book (example: under Skill Checks and DCs in the player core it refers to Chapter 10: Game Mastering). I feel like they should have released the PDFs a couple months before printing so the player base could catch all the mistakes and rules issues so that they could be fixed for the less easily updated physical version.

    AD&D 2E had the most amount of options.
    Perhaps the attitude on character death is so different because of video games and their varied influence between the decades? People might be bringing their video game expectations to the game table. Maybe they can't deal with character death without a save or restart option?
    I ordered GM core today. Gonna check those changes out first.
    And Pathbuilder is supporting both 2E and Remastered. Legit.

    On the argument about Death, he says dying was fine when you got 6 back up character...the things is there are ton of people that have a lot more back up and it's not even about that. I have over 20 back up characters. I don't want any of them to die...
    The argument stem from the point of having stakes. If you know for a fact that the character of the story are virtually invulnerable or that they can't go down. Then there is no more thrill or suspense. Oh boy there is a army of Orcs coming at us. We could run and saves ourselves but what is the points, we're invincible. It feels to some players/Gm/DM as thought whatever happens its impossible for the players to go down and for many of us it removes all edges from the story. It trivialize all encounter and dangers. They are no longer risking their life, nothing they are doing is courageous or heroic, they are not overcoming terrible odds and challenges. Most of our greatest heroes are herald as such because of their sacrifice and courage when face with nearly insurmountable odds, yet they won't give up. They push past their limit and risk it all, and in the end if they are lucky they manage to survive maybe just barely. This is why there are so many people that doesn't enjoy stories about Superman. Because it feels as though there were never any real threat to his being. Then you could say well, Batman ain't better, but we all know one mistake would often be all that is required for him to die.
    Then ofcourse, there are some people that are even more on the extreme on both side, like the community that enjoy games like the Souls series and whatever who enjoys the weight of having no chances. No pulling punches, no space for errors. I can't relate to that on most occasion. To me, TTRPGs are about the Power fantasy, not sure if its what it's called but I would described my desire when playing TTRPG as; I want to be a force to be reckoned with, I want normal beings, everyday joes to fear or admire my character. I want to play as a character that could easily take down a group of ten trained warrior. I want to be dangerous. I want see that strength displayed over my enemies and feel as though I am that Guy, and then fight a Boss who is actually stronger and you know work with the team to surmount the odds. I like the difficulty to waver. Easy to Hard in a up and down way. I want to be able to destroy a dozen Goblins single-handedly and then face the large Orc with a Plate Armor who can Two-shots anyone.

    Regarding the "Business Sense" of releasing all the rules for free.
    Story time.
    When I was looking to start TTRPGs, I had the choice between DnD and PF1. So naturally; chose the free option.
    I then found that I'd need some additional extras. Dice, Battlemaps, Minis. Which lead to me spending money in the FLG. And yes, some of that on Pathfinder products.
    I found that I loved the hobby, and bought the PF1 Critical Hit Deck.
    By that point, I was hooked, and bought the Starfinder core rulebook when it came out. Alongside some Adventure Path books.
    Naturally; I hopped on PF2 like white on rice. And bought some of those books too.
    Resulting in me spending a lot of money on Paizo, because it was offered for Free.

    @chrisphillips1974 10 месяцев назад

    A player's character death is the player's responsibility (Risk vs Reward), not a Game Master, you are running the story and the opposition, if the player doesn't want their character to die, the player may need to think about consequences before taking actions and declaring intentions. Some players go willy nilly on purpose, trying to garner the attention at the table, throwing caution into the wind, knowing their DM won't hold them accountable (killing the character off). If players have spent the time building the character, they want to cultivate them to a late level hero, being wise is part of their survival, and will pay off in the long run. Death in any RPG is what keeps the good players balance, cause and effect, reward vs consequence, and that has been there for decades in TTRPG's. The risk is what keeps the heroic efforts, in fact heroic....

    The argument about death/dying has absolutely been going on since at least the 80s (I don't have personal experience before that). What has changed is that games from the 80s that are held up as brutal today like AD&D and Basic D&D were considered soft back; games like Rolemaster were all the rage in groups that wanted a high rate of death back then.

    From all of the drama with Hasbro, I've made the decision to not purchase any more WoTC materials until/unless Hasbro really and TRULY change their business practices, or the IP is sold off to a smaller company that treats it with the respect it deserves, the fans with the respect we deserve, and their staff with the respect they deserve. That's a long way of saying, yes I'll be buying the remaster, and will be teaching friends how to play and supporting Paizo whenever possible. I still own and play 5e, but those are books with sunk costs so I have no issues using them. I just won't give them any more money and will instead help grow a company that is deserving of it. Plus pathfinder has a lot of fun customization capabilities that 5e lacks.
