Hello Micaela! I'm actually learning english and I could understand the whole video so that's made me happy. I have been watching your videos for about 4 years. Greetings from Argentina!
I started learning Japanese at 16 when I went on a summer exchange program to Tokyo, and 6 years later I have gone back for a year long college exchange program, graduated with my degree in Japanese, and am moving to Kyushu as an ALT :) Learning a second language has literally changed my life and I have met so many amazing people and learned so much about myself because of that decision I made 6 years ago! You had awesome advise in this video and I hope it inspires more people to pursue a second language :)))
the tips you mentioned are useful and I am the one you said who is learning second language, (actually thrid, Spanish) Thank you for making this video😉
For me routine is important! When I was in China, upon knowing my next job was going to be in Japan, I spent a few months studying through my phone in Starbucks of all places. I could call in, grab a coffee before work and break out the study. Now I'm actually in Japan...it's actually more difficult finding that good routine.
I totally agree about being immersed in the native language environment, after spending some time in Japan on holidays I was starting to read and understand some of the Kanji and Hiragana symbols. Great video, Cheers.
I've tried to learn many languages over the years and the main thing that i have a problem with is staying motivated, because it can sometimes feel like you're never going to reach a fluent level and you want to give up. Whenever I feel like this I always look over my past study notes to remind myself how far I've come. It always makes me feel good to look back on the days when I was learning how to count, or learning how to introduce myself, or learning the alphabet.
It is really hard to become fluent in a language if you don't actually live in a country where said language is spoken often. It is the repetition and daily use of a language that really helps you get fluent in it. The more you use it, be better it gets!
That is really not the case for everyone. I have had been introduced to English from a very young age and I have been learning it almost as long as I can remember. My sister was always better at it than I was, because she was bent on learning stuff. I got better at it than she is because I got interested in it, I watched a lot of movies, tv shows and our country never has anything dubbed to our language but subbed. The drive to learn something comes from you it is not so easy to learn something that you do not generally love or like.
I'm sorry to say, but although you are easy to understand, you aren't "fluent" in at least typing English. You have a lot of spelling mistakes. (better at it THAN I, dubbed/subbed, almost, generally) I do agree that a big part of learning a language is the drive and curiosity to want to know more, but I must say from personal experience, no matter how "fluent" you are at a language, you'll notice how much you can actually improve when you live in a country that speaks that language, for a prolonged period of time. English isn't my native language either, and I thought I was fluent at it, until I moved to America. Now, I notice I still make silly rookie mistakes by literally translating stuff from my own language, among other things.
I am best at speaking not at writting. Because everything I writte I have to check twice or maybe even more. The problem is I see mistakes I make only when I finish writting. When I am in a hurry I do not check the grammer, I should change my approach to this problem by checking the spelling but I am lazy. Thank you for correcting me.
What you say at 6:16 is very true. English took me to the lands over the horizon that I didn't even know existed! Great tips! Also I feel your positive vibe flowing from the screen. Good to see you with high mental energy! 😄
I use JA Sensei (very comprehensive) and JED (dictionary and stuff) for Japanese, and Flashcard Deluxe (for other languages or study in general). Those are Android apps, not sure about other platforms.
To go along with your last tip, using apps like HelloTalk to match with people who speak the language you want to learn and want to learn the language that you speak. Made loads of friends in China that way and I was picking up a hell of a lot of stuff even in my first couple of days using it. Very useful.
Awesome advise! My husband and I took our two children to Japan last October, and we learned a decent amount of Japanese before the trip but dropped it right away when we got back to the USA. Well I decided I want to become more fluent so I have started speaking to our kids in Japanese whenever possible (while also studying more) and my husband, who just started learning Spanish is now speaking to them in Spanish. And we speak to one another in those languages as well, as much as we can. It's been amazing and I feel like I am learning it better because even though I am the only one speaking Japanese in the house, I am learning from myself, and my kids are learning through me. (And hubby)
Studying Japanese. Recently I've been playing Japanese Pokemon games as a way to study and I've found it's really helpful! You learn new vocabulary, how to talk more naturally, and your reading skills go up lol Plus, you're also having fun playing a game you like so it's a win-win^^

Gracias por los consejos y por los nuevos subtítulos en Español!!! eso también ayuda bastante a aprender inglés!!
I really need to work on practicing everyday. After I left university I barely work on what I've learnt in Japanese, French, Italian or even Spanish! (Yes I studied 4 languages, no not all at once!) Great video Micaela!
love the new camera quality! and great tips. my English boosted when I changed the language in every electronic device to English. watching tv series helped a lot too! now I'm doing the same thing with Japanese ^^ Oh the videogames tip doesn't work if you set japanese in non-JP games. The only thing that changes on the PS4 is system text (there's no japanese data in PAL/NTSC games). a notable exception is Pokemon on 3ds where you can choose 日本語 as the game language. I'm playing it right now and I'm checking every other word on Jisho.org (
The new camera is great. These tips are incredibly valuable. I was thinking maybe reading simple kid's books would help, like reading Dr. Seuss in other languages?
+Dirk Driver Definitely! When I was younger I picked up the Japanese version of Charlotte's Web, but you can find popular books like Harry Potter in Japanese as well (for now advanced readers)!
How advanced is the first HP book? I noticed in English and German that book 1 is way easier to read than book 7 so I was wondering if it's the same in Japanese. I mainly have trouble with Kanji past JLPT N4-N3 level (and sometimes freaking Keigo throws me off so hard lol).
Always love the music on your videos! I'm working on learning Japanese, I got to visit Japan earlier this year, and it was amazing. My one regret is that I didn't learn more Japanese before going. I'm planning on going back next year, and so I'm now working on being more proficient :)
Hey, great vid Micaela. Love that your videos usually offer helpful insights. By the way, for the title of this video, "コツ" might sound better than "ヒント". 🤓
Beautiful video I agree 100% only problem not a lot of people think the brain is a muscle and needs to practice everyday. Then the excuses come in etc. But to all the people who don't make excuses. This is really good advice, the whole changing your environment around you in that language you're learning is very helpful. Brings you to a realization that hey" this is a language people use everyday and I am becoming part of that" cheers to the language learners who actually put in the work.
I'm a Chinese ,I 'm living in Japan for six years, and I 'm looking your video to learn English (believe it or not, I learn English began my middle school, but now I can speak Japanese that Japanese people can't recognize I 'm a Chinese, but I still can't speak English:( ) . That's amazing, isn't it?
孫源李 that's incredible that your Japanese is so proficient!! would you be interested in language exchange? My native language is English, and I want to learn Japanese!
Why would you think so? I'm taking French, Spanish and Italian classes this semester for college, while my phone displays German and my laptop is in Portuguese. Besides I'm typing this in English although my first language is Japanese lol...I don't mean to deny your thoughts or anything, I'm just curious what makes or made you think he shouldn't.
Learning Japanese has been one of the greatest decisions I ever made in my life. What started out as just a whim decision, has given me the chance to meet so make so many new friends, become best friends with the most amazing person in the world, countless new experiences, play video games and manga I would never be able to get otherwise, and the chance to live here. It really opens up your world to learn a new language. Definitely give it a shot, and try it for yourself!
Thank you so much Micaela with this video and yes I love the new camera. Lon didn't look happy that you were holding him up. 😉💖💐😻😍🐾🐾 I have a Japanese Bento cook book but if you can't read it then what. LOL I have been trying to find someone who would be willing to help me learn Japanese, but the last few people I have tried to get to help me said if I was younger and not fat they would. It's very disheartening when you get those kind of messages.
i minor in Korean language, and its easy to work hard and study the writing and grammar, the only true struggle is speaking the language itself. practice makes perfect, its really hard when you don't have a native to practice the language with, but i'm still trying to familiarize myself more with conversational skills and the informal forms by watching more youtube videos.
just discovered your channel today, and I'm already binge watching your videos! of course, i had to sibscribe. you're doing a great job, keep up the good work😁
I came to like Micah gills Japan and, thank you, watched the animation of Micah gills for the first time today. Micah gills conveyed Japanese charm hard towards foreign countries, and it was to the fan of Micah gills from very glad today.
When this vid started I could've sworn I'd seen it before, but it seems you only uploaded it today. Anyway, I'm moving to China (yes, China) in August to teach English in the hopes of (eventually) saving up enough money to move to Japan and enrol in a language school over there (probably KCP International). Here's hoping for the best ~
Dont know if its just me, but now that I know Japanese to a decent extent and learning Korean, I find that I have a different perspective on languages. I find learning languages in general to be fun. I get really interested in just learning how to say hello or how a sentence is formed in a another language. And I think studying anime for vocabulary and new words is useful.
Fortunately I'm studying in Canada as high school student. It's hard to learn in English but I like to learn new things. I want to be more good English speaker as soon as possible!!
Oh! This video has motivated me to get better at French and Korean so I can help out with subtitles :-D (I didn't know user submission of subtitles was a thing!)
I've been thinking about learning a third language. (Japanese is my second) Right now, I'm trying to decide between Arabic, Swedish, Spanish, Mandarin, and Korean. I think the hints you gave are spot on. I've done ALLL of them over the course of studying Japanese! lol :) Additionallly, I really like video games so I like watching Let's Play videos in another language.
These are some very helpful tips to keep in mind. Thank you for the info! :) Btw, I'm a new subscriber and I'm super glad I found your channel! Can't wait to see more of your videos, keep up the awesome work!
I currently work speaking/writing in my third and second language and since recently also started writing reports and communicating with colleagues in my fourth language. It was really scary to transition to using the fourth because I forgot how you can feel silly at the beginning when speaking in a new language but it helps me to see it like a fun game instead of a test.
Thank you for inspiring me! Yes; I am interested in making Japanese speaking friends and Chinese speaking friends in exchange for English and spanish Muito obrigado/aaah!!
Great video, Micaela! I'm learning Japanese, because, well, I was born in Japan, but adopted and moved to the U.S. as a baby. Eventually, I plan to move to Japan, so learning Japanese is a must for me. I also would like to connect with my heritage as well. Maybe after I'm confident enough in Japanese, I will take on learning Korean. But first, Japanese is my main priority. At the moment, I try to surround myself with Japanese. My iPhone is in Japanese, as well as the set language I have on RUclips. I also listen to tons of Japanese music and I like to watch J-dramas and Anime. I also have a PS3 and Japanese Nintendo 3DS, both of which are set in Japanese. I'm graduating with my B.A. soon at my university, so hopefully soon, I hope to follow my dreams of moving to Japan, and truly surrounding myself in the language. For my up coming last semester at my university, I have really been thinking of enrolling myself in a Japanese language school, for just something to do in my spare time. I took 5 semesters (2 1/2 years) of Japanese language in college, so I do understand some Japanese. However, since my sensei spent most of the time on reading and writing, my reading and writing skills are better than my speaking skills.
***** Bachelors degree. And as of right now, I'm not sure. Probably the immediate goal is to teach English in Japan, at least until I can get on my feet a bit, and get my Japanese language skill to be fluent enough to where I can get another job doing something else. But as of right now, probably teaching English in Japan.
ミカエラ〜twitterでもよくコメントしてるNancieです(^O^)Thank you for uplodaing new video! I love learning English so I usually watch your video ! So this video is so helpful for me! But I watch your channel not only for learning English! I just simply like YOUR video!:)) Thanks every time! I hope my English is not bad:D lol
I'm watching this as a 16 years old Dutch-Ukrainian girl who lives in a town where they speak almost only Frisian, with German friends who I have daily contact with (in German) and I am going to nail my Cambridge CAE exam in about a half year and my Latin and Russian exams in one and a half year.. I think I'm on the good way :D
A few months ago I felt like I hit a plateau while learning German. It was frustrating and just made everything feel very pointless. But, I broke out of it just recently and realize now how much I learned while feeling that way. I think I learned more during that time than any other time in my language learning.
The first language i learned was luxembourgish ( born in Luxembourg ). In Luxembourg, we have the privileg to learn 3 different languages in school. In the first two years in school we begin with german, then comes frensh. Later we learn english. So i can speek in 4 different languages now. But after my first trip to Japan, i want to learn the japanese language. The language course begins in September, so i cant wait to go there and learn a fifth language :)
Sage advice, Micaela. I like the quality of the new camera, too.
Hello Micaela! I'm actually learning english and I could understand the whole video so that's made me happy. I have been watching your videos for about 4 years. Greetings from Argentina!

Thank you so much! I have just begun to study language, and videos like this keep me inspired!
I totally agree about being immersed in the native language environment, after spending some time in Japan on holidays I was starting to read and understand some of the Kanji and Hiragana symbols. Great video, Cheers.

I use JA Sensei (very comprehensive) and JED (dictionary and stuff) for Japanese, and Flashcard Deluxe (for other languages or study in general). Those are Android apps, not sure about other platforms.
+curi0 I thought about using JA Sensei, but I wasn't sure if it was good or not. I think I might try it now 😊
Thanks Micaela for your videos! I am a Hongkonger learning English(C1), Japanese(N4) and French(A1).
To go along with your last tip, using apps like HelloTalk to match with people who speak the language you want to learn and want to learn the language that you speak. Japanese seems nice. I'm currently learning French and I'm in desperate need of a study buddy .-.
These are great tips!
Also great camera.
You are so pretty ;)
These are some very helpful tips to keep in mind. Thank you for the info! :) Btw, I'm a new subscriber and I'm super glad I found your channel! Can't wait to see more of your videos, keep up the awesome work!
I currently work speaking/writing in my third and second language and since recently also started writing reports and communicating with colleagues in my fourth language. It was really scary to transition to using the fourth because I forgot how you can feel silly at the beginning when speaking in a new language but it helps me to see it like a fun game instead of a test.
thanx you....
I want a study buddy but sometimes I have busy schedules that I can't sit and make progress with the language ...

Thank you for inspiring me! Yes; I am interested in making Japanese speaking friends and Chinese speaking friends in exchange for English and spanish
Muito obrigado/aaah!!
First time seeing any of your videos, but have to say, once you spoke in Japanese, the kawaii-ness of this video kicked up like 10 notches haha.
If anyone is in the Kochi prefecture and wants to hang out after August 17th I'll be around to learn with you. :)
+Bishamon Sama Thank you! :) And of course, I am never going to give up. It's my life's goal as well as my passion in life.
+Bishamon Sama Yes, i'm 24 going on 25. And going to get my B.A. this coming Fall semester.
+Bishamon Sama thank you! :)

The new camera is great ^^
I'm watching this as a 16 years old Dutch-Ukrainian girl who lives in a town where they speak almost only Frisian, with German friends who I have daily contact with (in German) and I am going to nail my Cambridge CAE exam in about a half year and my Latin and Russian exams in one and a half year.. I think I'm on the good way :D
A few months ago I felt like I hit a plateau while learning German. It was frustrating and just made everything feel very pointless. But, I broke out of it just recently and realize now how much I learned while feeling that way. I think I learned more during that time than any other time in my language learning.
Try to turn your camera to manual focus because your camera try to ajust and sometimes your out of focus ;) otherwise it's perfect !!
Thank you....
