The fact that mortal combat (video games in general) is this far along and they still make "metal" peices of outfits move with the skeletal structure.

its a bunch of extra work to do, so they skip it, you need extra joints for the parts, make constraints on how they move or simulate physics on them and bake that on to the animations (wich can break in animation layering) they also need to be watch so no clipping occurrs, its a pain, even in movies they avoid it if they can.
