    I had an old boy down in Kentucky who would wrap or tape a piece of cardboard or some newspaper over a tattoo because he did tree work and he was continually being bumped and scraped by branches and limbs. The cardboard trick would also work really well between the tattoo and the sock as long as it was not too constrictive. Kentucky innovation, ya gotta appreciate it.

      Long sleeve shirts can work. We only offer this solution as it can save on laundry. Washing a couple tube socks is less volume-wise compared to a bunch of long sleeve shirts. You can change a bunch of socks throughout the day and still not have a full washer load.
      Plus, the socks are less likely to rub as much as a longer sleeve shirt

    What about concrete cutting , I’m worried about slurry

    • @BetterTattooing
      @BetterTattooing  Год назад

      I work with a couple of concrete guys and they do the same thing. Just be aware, and careful, and don't stick your hand in/in front of the discharge arc! Be sure to bring a couple of extra changes and randomly swap them out throughout the day.
      Remember, the point of this is to protect while keeping breathability possible. If you work in a seriously dirty job this can help reduce the chances of a negative heal. The best option is to always schedule your tattoo around days where you know you have time (~3 days) to rest after having a session. If you can't wait, this will help.

    • @BetterTattooing
      @BetterTattooing  2 года назад +1

      Crazy enough, there isn't much you can do for a hand except try and keep it clean. If you moisturize a little with a plain hand cream every other wash the tattoo shouldn't suffer too much moisture loss to impact the heal.
      If you had a good artist who really knows how to work hands, there shouldn't be an issue at all. So fingers crossed there.
      As for the wrist, if you can wear longer sleeves that aren't elastic on the ends, that should keep your tattoo clean enough to heal effectively. Don't over-compensate because you are worried. Just be gentle and aware and it should heal properly if it was don well.
      Think of it this way - a cat scratch is more traumatic (most of the time... sometimes tattoo wounds are pretty gnarly!!) thab a tattoo. If you wouldn't care for a cat scratch by heaping a ton of interventions on them, you shouldn't for a tattoo.
      Edited to add - if the Saniderm falls off, leave it off. Reapplying can extend the heal time and isn't really necessary to heal a tattoo. Artists use this product because you stop touching it when your tattoo when its applied. In fact, transparent bandages are not indicated for tattoo use. Rather, they are supposed to be applied by a medical professional, not a tattooer🤘

    Would sun protection sleeve work?

    • @BetterTattooing
      @BetterTattooing  2 года назад +1

      Depending on how tight and breathable the sleeve is, they could be a good alternative - if you have the money to purchase one. Be aware of the fabric being used isn’t going to hold in sweat, be abrasive to the skin, or move around a lot. Use the same technique stated to put on and take off, and make sure you have a couple extra to put on if it gets very dirty.

    • @BetterTattooing
      @BetterTattooing  2 года назад +2

      If your arm is too big for the sock trick, wear longer sleeves that are loose fitting and blue tape the end somewhat tight around the wrist.
      Bring a couple extra shirts so you can swap out if you get nasty during the day.
      If you are able, try to take on the short order stuff for the day. Oil changes, tired rotations, brakes etc. Things that won't have you getting soaked in fluids. If you can't avoid those, just be aware of what you're doing, stay steady, and don't rush the job. If you're aware of where you are putting your arm you can accommodate the tattoo in most situations.
      Don't clean your tattoo with Gojo or other pumice-based cleaners. They will cause more issues than help.
      If you do get greasy, use olive oil or another organic brand liquid.oul to break up grime on your tattoo. Don't wash it a bunch of times trying to get it clean. That will just dry it out and lengthen the heal time.
      Also, only moisturize 2 times or less a day. Your skin is likely to be moisturized by all the products you use in the day to day. Throwing extra on top of your already traumatized skin will worsen the outcome.
      Moisturize the entire arm when you do decide to moisturize. You so this so that you can touch another part of your arm that ISN’T tattooed to see if the skin feels dry. If it is, you can bet the tattoo is as well. If it isn't, leave the tattoo alone!

    • @BetterTattooing
      @BetterTattooing  2 года назад +3

      Good question!! Try to keep if relatively loose. The idea is to allow the sock to move with you and not scrunch up. Keep it loose!
      If your sock is too small for the area you're coving, go buy a pack of longer socks, or take a pair of thermal leggings and cut them up to size.

    What if I have a back tattoo ? What should I use for that ?

    • @BetterTattooing
      @BetterTattooing  Год назад

      It depends on how big it is, and how much coverage you recieved when the tattoo was done.
      For the most part, loose fitting clothing that offer environmental protection is good enough. The back doesn't normally see a lot of interaction with the world around you -i.e.not many folks out use all of their back for work (past physical exertion). So, we are left with trying to care for the rear shoulders or the rear-oblique line around the waist.
      For the rear shoulders- wear thicker clothing and do your best to avoid any interaction with the tattoo when you work. Like, if you haul sheetrock, use your off hand to carry rather than your strong hand.
      For the oblique line (which a lot of trades people may use a tool belt that can rub the heck out of a fresh tattoo, for example) keep clothing loose, wear any belts or harnesses lower (if possible), or make sure to scheudle a few extra days after the tattoo of time off to allow more healing before returning.
      For spots along the spine: there's not much that needs to be done. If you sweat during the day, the tattoo should stay pliable enough to sustain most work related stresses. You won't need to wash it a bunch. Just keep it as clear from debris as possible and hop in a shower as soon as possible once finished.
      If it is along the color line: not much can be done to keep it safe from wear and tear. These spots normally heal a bit rough no matter what you do so having extra time off is really the only way to help.
      With all spots on the back: be sure to not over extend and stretch the skin too much. If something you are doing hurts, makes the tattoo feel uncomfortable, you need to adjust your movements to facilitate the healing wound.

      Don't use any transparent adhesive bandages as the collection of sweats under them can over saturate the wound while healing.
      If you do want to cover the tattoo, use a non-stick gauze bandage with a breathable dressing. If it ends up getting stuck to the tattoo, leave the dressing on until you get a chance to shower. After soaking the dressing thoroughly it should pull off without causing ny damage

Not many folks use their chest or inner thigh during work, but for those that do wearing loose fitting light colored clothes is just as good at keeping dusty environments off the fresh wound. Don’t stress too much over your tattoo!
      To be honest, people tend to waaaay over care for their tattoo rather than under care for it (at least in our experience). You should be just fine wearing long sleeves. In fact, if you can wear something that isn’t tight, but not also loose, the tattoo should be fine - regardless of the work you do. Unless you are wearing a spandex, plastic, or pleather shirt, your tattoo will be able to breathe just fine.
      What you do not want to do is cover your tattoo with plastic, some random covering, or anything else that can occlude air contact with the tattoo. As long as the tattooer did a good job and your tattoo isn’t really chewed up, the tattoo won’t need additional interventions. Just make sure you keep the tattoo out of the sun, because getting a sunburn on your tattoo is really, really bad.
      If you swap out a lotion/ointment application with sunscreen (like, don’t put on lotion, instead just put on sunscreen as recommended on the label), and reapply as necessary during the day. This is really important if you live in a hot/sunny climate. Bring a couple extra shirts to change every few hours. Also bring a jug of water to rinse (NOT WASH) your tattoo if it get really icky. Shower like normal at the end of the day if you get really nasty.
      Think about it in comparison to other wounds - like we have said before in the comments:
      How would you care for a cat scratch if you were working your job? How about a skinned knee? However you would take care of those should be more effort than a tattoo - if it s done well. The trauma of a tattoo is far less than any cat stretch (depth) and far less damage to the epidermis (outer layer of skin) than a skinned knee. It’s just got ink in it! Well, and it costs a tone to do :D
      Be safe, relax, and let your body heal. Don’t stress.
      If you want us to give you a check in during the healing time you can send us an email and we can talk it out.

      Your tattoo is going to get dirty right after lunch so wait to properly clean it when you get home

      Kitchens are a good place to cook!
      But this covering practice is good for most any jobs, especially ones that get hot and can make you gross

      Yup, works well under the heavy ass protective clothing you gotta wear. It creates a buffer to ensure nor rubbing.
      So
      Ummmm.... yeah! Make sure to have a good wash, ensure your tattooer avoids a few specific colors (some pigments don't deal with with higher concentrations of specific elements that are absorbed through the skin) and omfg try not to get burned too bad!
      Hopefully you aren't getting something exposed tattooed!
