  • Following my previous and rather half arsed effort - a new Land Rover project is begun. Will I do a better job this time? Will I actually paint the finished vehicle??
Project Kermit is a 1978 Land Rover Series 3 109 (long wheel base) which is being stripped right down and rebuilt with a 200tdi engine and a few other improvements.
The other videos in the series can be found in this playlist:
    • Project Kermit: A Seri...
If you want to join those supporting my channel you can check out my Patreon page here:
    www.patreon.co...
With the support of Patrons I am able to make more and hopefully better content without needing any corporate sponsors. In return they get extra videos, updates and behind the scenes photos.
If you would rather make a one-off donation you can do that via paypal here: www.paypal.me/...
All Paypal donations are now going straight to Project Awesome and will be credited on those episodes.
Many many thanks to all those that have supported me and the channel but please only send money if you have it to spare!

Hi Max, some 30+ years ago, I restored a SIII landrover for use driving in a marine environment in New Zealand. The vehicle was in such a state that I ended up acid-stripping the chassis, bulkhead, door-frames, window-frames, and all other steel parts, then welding nearly two m^2 of steel sheet to repair all the rust holes -- and then hot-dip galvanizing everything (I had to drill a few additional holes to let the molten zinc out of the internal cavities, of course). The galvanizing was a huge success, and 20 years of hard beach driving later all the galvanized steel items were still intact. This is a long-winded way of suggesting that you might want to consider hot-dip galvanizing for your own landrover restoration -- in my case, the galvanizing was actually cheaper than painting (and, of course, you can't paint inside hollow sections). Love your work BTW...

I love Ironthumper projects, they always start with the components being pulled out of a bush. What a bloke. My first vehicle was a LWB 1978 landrover - happy days spent plating the chassis - beware these 70's LWB chassis rot from the inside out. They look fine until they snap in half...

Dont get me wrong its years younger than yours and not as much work involving the chassis. If you could give it a quick look over and give me some pointers that would be great!

Those early 110 doors with wind-up glass and lift-up handles are the best of both worlds in my opinion, and quite hard to find unless you opt for reproductions. I fitted a single cab to my 109 at one time and found it very cramped even though the sloping rear bulkhead on a LWB offers more space for the seat. I often thought about a king-cab type conversion in the style of a 60s/70s garage recovery truck, but in the end I put the van body back on!
