- Florida will have one of the country's most restrictive social media bans for minors - if it withstands expected legal challenges. The bill signed by DeSantis on Monday bans social media accounts for children under 14, and requires parental permission for 14- and 15-year-olds.

Good luck. You can try but I remember researching different VPNs to bypass school blocked websites. You’re dealing with a new generation that’s technically smarter than you and live in a technology world.
Their school work is completed online. It’s better to teach them how to utilize, prepare, understand than it is to withhold.

I would also call that being a responsible parent, 16 is a nice min age. I also have a network that I monitor and block certain sites and ads.
Advertising should be an across the board agreement, They literally pred on our kids with long form ads, especially youtube. Big tech is the main predator for your child, and they're doing it in the open. The parents are none the wiser, hence why government restrictions need to be put into place at this point.

I understand your point, but wondering how you feel about the contract aspect of a child creating their own social media account. Are they wise enough to understand the terms of service? We don't allow kids to enter into other contracts - so why would social media accounts be different?

Parents can use this law to help them be good parents. My friends’ children are told by their teachers to use social media. Some teachers and administrators use it as a means of communicating with their students for homework assignments. If the parents don’t want their children to, the teachers and administrators claim it is part of the curriculum.
It will probably be enforced the same way Louisiana restricts pornography for anyone under 18. In Louisiana, certain websites will direct you to a government page where it asks you for your information, such as your ID. It's stupid. While I agree that most kids these days need to touch grass, no one should need the government's permission to go on social media.

While I'll agree that there is danger in children becoming addicted to social media, I would leave that to parents to handle. I get what you're saying, but in a sense, this isn't different than prohibiting stores from selling alcohol to minors. We as a society agree that minors need additional oversight and protections, because they aren't strong and wise enough to protect themselves.

What stops the kids from lying about their age?
The Children's Online Privacy Protection Act has already clearly indicated that it is illegal for commercial websites and apps to allow children under age 13 to open an online account without verifiable parental consent. Need more details as it is unclear how this differs other than the age.
By banning it and deleting unverified accounts, this will force everyone to provide government ID or biometrics to these corporations.
This will also block VPNs. If the account is tied to a US government ID, you wouldn't be able to talk to your friends in Russia, let's say, using a VPN that says you are from a different country, because the US is blocking accounts from Russia.

I know good parents. They are those people who get called weird because they go to church 3 times a week and homeschool their kids who also play sports and are super involved in the community. I'm a center leaning independent and NOT a Desantis fan but gotta say I'm all in on this one. It's insane we haven't done this sooner with the ever prevalent online dangers for our youth. It's not an unreasonable restraint. Hopefully there's a way to enforce without being ridiculous and there's the rub I fear.

This is a no-brainer. Social media accounts that kids can participate in should be a family-based account overseen and filtered by parents. Otherwise, you might as well leave your front door wide open and invite the entire world to come on in to your kid's bedrooms 24/7. Corporations are profit driven and have no financial incentive to care or protect kids from the stress, depression and other negative influences that an adult, and sometimes degenerate, world must impose on their impressionable and innocent young minds.
