This is an amazingly informative channel. This video reflects my thoughts on the Pimsleur Spanish. It got me to B1 and i comfortably go to Mexico and communicate. Keep doing your thing brother!

Happy to hear that you had good results with Pimsleur Spanish. I'm curious, did you complete the 5 levels of Pimsleur Spanish, and how long did it take you? Could you describe the level you reached at the end? Also, what's your native language?

    • @Radbrad869
      @Radbrad869 Год назад +8

@@loistalagrand Sure thing! Yes I completed all 5 levels, it took me about 8 months because I wasn't as disciplined as I should. At the level 4 I took a free B1 test and passed it. I am a native English speaker who grew up with a little bit of Spanish from my mom but never learned how to communicate. Just how to say my name and how to count. I am going to keep practicing Spanish and I will take either the Pimsleur German or Portuguese point.

I bought Pimsleur French and German about 25 years ago, on CD. But well you how things go and it wasn't until the kids had grown up and I retired that I started to make time for the courses. Though they are out of date (eg pre-euro money) languages don't change so much. Interestingly both language courses are structured the same way, eg "would you like to drink something", and so on. Though I have skipped between the two languages, I am now concentrating on German, mostly to compete with a friend. However, I remember everything from the French lessons because of the power of the technique. Actually, I did five years of compulsory French at school, but did not learn anything because it was entirely based on grammar, and we were not even taught grammar for English (it was out of fashion apparently). Literally after five years I could not even greet someone properly in French, I just remembered a few words. I only wish they had used the Pimsleur method !!
Anyway, thanks for the review and explanation, and I concur 100%.

I noticed on the first lesson of Pimsleur German (which is also on RUclips) that at 4:15 'Sie' is pronounced 'see' rather than 'zee'. Is this not wrong?? Especially as the speaker pronounces it correctly (zee) at 0:55 It makes me doubt as to whether he's actually a native German.

      No. See is correct.

I don't think so. The mouth is in different positions to pronounce Sie and say Zeit.

I’m already B1 in German I downloaded Pimsleur yesterday and I’ll try to finish the app and see if it was of any use.
I’m at that sucky area where I understand everything but I’m still a little uncomfortable speaking at times

How is it going? I'm also at B1 but I feel like my speaking got worse after the classes stopped.

@@CreativeExpress87 So I've finished level 1 already, if you're B1 you won't learn anything from level 1 aside from maybe a phrase or two from the bonus packs.
Level 2 still seems pretty easy. I intend on completing all of the levels and seeing at which point I feel like I'm learning. However just being exposed to the language and speaking in it through the audio lessons I think still has a positive effect.

@@DhiaMoayed So I've done level 1 - 2 - 3, I could have easily finished it by now but I've been not studying German that much.
However my review of the first 3 levels is good. It gets progressively more difficult. I would say my German is B2. I became much more comfortable with speaking and I make fewer mistakes when speaking German now grammatically despite not understanding the grammar.
Given the size of the course I think if you're starting from scratch and using Pimsluer in tandem with a free app like duolingo for vocabulary then you could easily reach functional fluency.
My biggest notice is learning via audio course makes you pronounce things better than most foreign people. I now notice when people have an accent in German, of course I often have an accent myself but I can normally fake being from the South.
I still have my account and continue to use and recommend it.
I'm now using it to learn Spanish, Arabic & Russian too.

I'm from Denmark. I learned German in school for about 10 years - I was ok at it. Since then however I've not really used it and therefore forgotten a great deal. I am wondering if this might be the right app to re-learn it; can you enter it from a certain point if you already know some German??
The German Grammar was the thing in school that made it difficult - I've felt that it complicated things in my brain to put too much focus on that. I studied for tests and grades, but would have preferred to learn to communicate more.
I want to relearn it now, since I work in a museum with lots of German tourists

Pimsleur is great for speaking and pronunciation practice. Don't use it alone. It should be a second or third resource.

I dissagree with this review. Half of Pimsleur is in English. So you really don't get much vocabulary. You get a lot of phrases and short sentences but no complex sentence structures. One hundred and fifty hours of Pimsleur ia only about 75 hours of the target language. Also you stated ,by being an audio program you can do other things while listening. This is true. But if you only do passive listening you will not get the most out of it. Also Pimsleur never explains grammar points. There will be times you may notice a change in a word but no explanation is given. Pimsleur works best when it is supplemented with another program with written text. This is not a balanced review.
