Yeah. I've watched her channel since before it was called "Feli from Germany". I don't quite recall what it used to be called, but she is great! My only worry about her (and other expat Europeans) is that, speaking as an expat European myself, staying in the US long-term is a trap: health issues can only get worse as you get older, and the US healthcare system is built to bankrupt people. I hope Feli will have enough money to get back to Europe if health issues become serious enough that her insurance company drops her.
americans and friendship is a difficult topic for us germans because most of it is so superficial. 'hey, we should have dinner sometime', heard that one before? I was married to an american for 5 years, once we split up our mutual american friends never spoke to me again, never reached out to me, all sided with him. it said when it comes to friendship americans are peaches while germans are coconuts, it's very easy to tear through the flesh of a peach but once you get to the core it's hard to maintain a real friendship while once you drill through the shell of a coconut and get into the soft tissue you usually made a friend for life!
You probably won’t believe this but I happened to be listening to this episode while I was shopping at the grocery store (Kroger, for those of you who know) near UC (University of Cincinnati)! I came to Cincinnati myself about 6 years ago for graduate school. I am originally an Arab but have moved and traveled a lot throughout my life and can relate to many of the things Feli talked about. I still find it hard to navigate relationships with Americans and walk this fine line between being friendly but also firm when I need to set boundaries or point out someone’s mistakes. It was really nice to listen to someone living in the same city as myself share experiences very similar to my own. Needless to say, I enjoyed this episode a lot!

Short story about German directness and their medical system: When I went to Germany for the second time, I took a class to improve my German, and discovered that I had a hearing problem. I hadn't realized this in the U.S., because the gaps in what my ears could hear in English my brain could fill in, and thus I experienced hearing perfectly. But I didn't know German well enough for my brain to fill in the gaps, even though the sounds in the German language are the same or quite similar. So I went to a store that sold hearing aids. They told me they could provide the hearing aids I needed, based on the hearing tests they performed, in 6 weeks. By then, the class I was in would be over. Someone at the school went with me to the store the next day and told them politely what I needed and why and what the school REQUIRED. As a result, I got the hearing aids in 2 days. That's the directness of Germans, especially with other Germans. The company didn't even charge me for the hearing aids, and told me when I returned to the U.S., I could then either pay for the hearing aids or return them. I returned them, and bought a pair (same top-of-the-line brand) at a discount store for half the price. This wasn't a big loss to the company. Almost all there customers in Germany are Germans, and the German health service pays for hearing aids.
Of course I came here from Feli's link when she said she revealed more than she intended---plus I wanted to say how inspirational your chat was. I'm 60+ and that 'ghosting' was never an issue back in my day. That must be a new development.
I'm 31 and it seems like the ghosting thing started becoming more prevalent 10+ years ago but really kicked in hard in the last 5-6 years. It also drives me insane and it is something about our culture that I really hope switches back to a standard of respectful communication.
Two of my favorite youtubers together! I don't know about Germany. But I know the term "ghost" is used in the Dutch language now and is conjugated in the same way as any Dutch verb.
I am German who spent several years in the US (also from Munich originally, like Feli), and I had exactly the same experiences with ghosting ... only in my case, I was a guy getting ghosted by women. It really soured me on the dating scene in the US. I ended up perceiving American women as extremely flaky and noncommittal. So I can totally relate to Feli's observations on this particular issue.
Gen X isn't like this. It's Millennials and Gen Z. They're all terrified of failing because they grew up getting congratulated for every single thing they did. When it comes to being honest with people, they're just not used to it, and they associate discomfort with "trauma," so they think it's better to avoid discomfort than to do the right thing, which is communicating openly and honestly with people.
American man here with an American daughter who is closing in on dating age. From my point of view, that type of behavior with men bailing on girls in romantic relationships is completely unacceptable, and may earn an angry father knocking at his door. I am flabbergasted that this actually is a problem in the dating world.
In the U.S. ghosting happens a lot thesse days with job hunting, too. You'll apply for a job, even have one or more interviews, and the company will ghost you. Most don't even send out an automated generic email saying you're no longer under consideration, let alone respond to phone calls, emails, etc. You'll just never hear from them again.
When I would get ghosted by a business, I would call up their H.R. department and tell them point blank how LOUSY their company REALLY is and how I would send word of mouth to my friends about my experience with that firm. One H.R. rep. said I would make a WONDERFUL addition to their firm and even offered me a weekly advance for being so straightforward. I told him to cram it. Shortly after, I was working for a competing company and literally taking clients AWAY from them just by mentioning MY bad past experience with the business.
Yes for sure. My mom is 56 and hasn't looked for a new job in probably 30 years now and she can't understand this concept. I had an interview the other day, wrote a thank you letter and they seemed like they really liked me and they had no objections when I asked if they had any hesitation with moving me forward. I told her they never replied to me again and she's so confused by it. I'm like, dude thats the way it is idk what to tell you
That is the rudest thing. I frankly would rather have a prospective employer just stop me in the interview and say "Excuse me, we hate you, I dont think we need to continue." Instead you get lead on with flaky companies.
I was ghosted by 2 Japanese "friends". One was a college student in a nearby city. We hit it off as friends immediately through a language app. Then after about 3 months of hanging out at coffee shops and going to workout at the college, this person just stopped texting. Poof The second person was living in Japan and we hit it off immediately as well. We started sending gifts to each other nearly every month. We zoomed called every week, met each others kids and began making plans for me to fly out to Japan in May. Eight months flew by so quickly and my preparation to fly out was coming together. Then the change came last February...POOF! Gone. So, it makes me hesitant making friends from other countries when this happens. But, I do have a Japanese friend who we"ve known each other for a year now and zoom twice a month! A brighter side to my experience :)

I"m always baffled when I see Europeans move to the US. It's quite shocking given how the country is run by corporations and money, has no social safety net, is swimming in guns and has absolutely no workers' rights. It boggles the mind why anyone, especially from Germany or a Scandinavian country, would ever want to come here.
She was more personal that any German speaker I have ever met, including my dad! JK (mostly). She's a lovely young lady and her channel is refreshing. She does a great breakdown of German vs. American pay considering, in appropriate detail, cost of insurance, housing, and retirement. Both Steve and Feli are jewells.
I think the fear of confrontation is a learned behavior - if even 1 in 10 times you confront someone and they completely flip out on you, it trains you to avoid that behavior. This may in turn be a consequence of living in a culture where confrontation doesn't occur, and people don't know how to regulate their emotions during conflict (or outright refuse to.) There's no easy solution to this, but expecting guys to be forthright when they don't completely know you might not be reasonable. Instead, both guys and gals can try to judge each other as individuals, and try to extend the olive branch when the situation calls for it. Conversely, we can try to demonstrate that we know how to deal with conflict and control our emotions during it - something I'd love to see more of from certain people in my life.
ofc, she's been living in the states for many years and she is german and the german language is close to English. it would've been more impressive if she was from like China or Korea ,the languages of which are not related at all to english
I like the advice to focus on what you like to better enjoy a culture. I think I focused on what I didn’t like about Japan more than I should have. That was before Covid. Waiting for them to stop wearing masks in public now that they changed the rules.
Interesting perspective on dating. I think it really is a general aversion to directness. But also, just ghosts of traditional values around dating. Everyone carries around Puritan guilt.

They really are not similar. I am English, I speak French (B2) and I am learning German (A2). For me German is very hard because the vocabulary is so different.

There are German words that differ with English words except in the order of the letters, or add or subtract a letter. I think it is better to study, for example, English alongside Japanese, because there is a wide difference between the two languages.
@@Chougi_Taleb I would not study French and Spanish together, or Dutch and German. I really do think English and German are quite different, I struggle with German for that reason. They say English is a Germanic language, but 60% of our words are from latin or french, not many are Anglo Saxon, about 1% in the largest dictionary, but they are commonly used. But perhaps you should ask someone who has studied both as a non native.
Life in Germany surely isn't perfect either its in the US. I Think its just important to find a place where you want to live and feel comfortable. Germans definitly take life a bit to serious, its more easy going in North America. There are other Challenges in America and other in Europe.
Cultural differences should not separate us from each other, but rather cultural diversity brings a collective strength that can benefit all of humanity.

Dr's hospitals and ambulances do actually cost more in Germany believe it or not. The difference is that the taxes are so high that you pay far FAR more in places like Germany Sweden and Canada in taxes so you don't see the cost at the counter but you pay all year long and twice as much in many cases than if you'd had to foot the bill in the United States. The other side of this is that in America you're going to have to save your money and use health savings accounts and insurances to pay for most of your issues if need be so it really just comes down to planning and budgeting vrs having the government take your money before you see it and then use some of it IF you need it
Nobody in Germany has to pay for an ambulance but the actual cost is 300-500 EUR while in the US it's usually around $2000. So it's definitely not more expensive in Germany.
Can you give some details on "far FAR more taxes" in Germany, Sweden and Canada than in the US. www.investopedia.com/financial-edge/0411/do-canadians-really-pay-more-taxes-than-americans.aspx. Difference varies from country to country and obviously not all of this goes to the health system. The language core between those languages are differents, just be achieve fluency in english and after start learning german.

Life in Germany surely isn't perfect either its in the US. I Think its just important to find a place where you want to live and feel comfortable. Germans definitly take life a bit to serious, its more easy going in North America. There are other Challenges in America and other in Europe.

Dr's hospitals and ambulances do actually cost more in Germany believe it or not.
The difference is that the taxes are so high that you pay far FAR more in places like Germany Sweden and Canada in taxes so you don't see the cost at the counter but you pay all year long and twice as much in many cases than if you'd had to foot the bill in the United States.
The other side of this is that in America you're going to have to save your money and use health savings accounts and insurances to pay for most of your issues if need be so it really just comes down to planning and budgeting vrs having the government take your money before you see it and then use some of it IF you need it
Nobody in Germany has to pay for an ambulance but the actual cost is 300-500 EUR while in the US it's usually around $2000. So it's definitely not more expensive in Germany.

Difference varies from country to country and obviously not all of this goes to the health system. For a so called language expert,the first 2 minutes of the video was kind of awkward.
It killed me that he couldn’t figure out the shortened version of Felicia. She also speaks very good English so the fact that he couldn’t get it even after multiple times of her saying it perfectly is baffling.
