So I watched this video about an hour ago and decided to go netting on my canal next to the house. Within 45 minutes I caught 3 of these same sirens. Really made my day. Getting them acclimated to my 55 gallon as I'm typing this.

So cool to see many wild fish species I grew up catching in ponds and ditches. The Kilifish was one of my faves as they thrive in grassy/algae laid areas. We have a small pond behind our rental loaded with Gambusia, Blue Gill, and Bass. May create a small aqua bowl (self-cycled) and try it with Gambusia or Kilifish from the pond behind us. Thx for sharing and enjoy!!

3:48 In Trinidad we call that fish a Coscarob (Blue Acara). They are found in almost all rivers, ponds, and streams here. I caught two using a fishing rod and kept them in an aquarium. They are truly amazing fishes to keep. The first one I caught was extremely skittish and never ate, but warmed up to me and started following me around whenever I was near the tank. The second one was extremely fascinating. Both fishes were silver when I caught them with a single black spot close to their tails, but I noticed that the pattern on them would change to stripes, then return. Most impressive however was that the second Coscarob turn black with deep stripes and started flaring its fins, all of them. He then got super aggressive and kept fighting with the other fishes in the tank. Once he had transitioned to Dark Mode, he never changed back.

That’s a bullhead catfish. Probably a black bullhead or a brown bullhead. It’s not a madtom. Bullheads can get big, and they’re very predatory. They have big mouths-great for inhaling smaller fish whole.

Good to see the comments from people who also police an area for trash. Sometimes it feels like we’re the only ones. My son and I camped a lot and that was the first thing we always did. We called it setting up our garbage bag.

I love knowing someone else out there is just like me! I'm in a more densely populated area of Florida, Pinellas County. I recently used the litter I found walking down by the water as an excuse to what I was doing around a small body of water in a subdivision! 😄
Sometimes I feel like it's seriously too much of an addiction! LOL I have to see what's going on over in that water!!
I caught two AMAZING male Sailfins a few days ago! Got them in quarantine, along with myself 😆
its a WOOPER!!! lol 🤣👍 it's freaking awesome!!

I also enjoy doing exactly what you are doing up here in Pennsylvania. Been netting fish and critters as long as I can remember. At 3:20 is for sure a blue gill but the next looks to be an invasive maybe a convict cichlids.

Man with how often “snake discovery” is in Florida i really think it would be awesome if you guys did a group video. They also have a lice if freshwater fish and do a lot if talking about the invasive animals in Florida. Lots of turtles and bugs in addition to all the lizards and frogs and they all gotta eat. I bet there is a ton of crossover in the two hobbies. They have done goldfish netting before too :)

It is a Siren ... I raised one I caught ... Had him for years ... He would get out of the tank and walk around my house. They LOVE earthworms and suck them down ... Mine was name Kirby ( like the Kirby vacuum cleaner because of the way he would suck his food down ) They are VERY sensitive to ammonia burn so be sure to keep tank clean... I never had mine eat any of my fish. He was about 2 feet long and I kept him in a 75 gallon. I would LOVE to have another one if you know where I could get one !

@FreeRoamFantasy No problem! Hardy fish that has a good bit of personality. I have found them anywhere from penny sized up to about 5-6". Usually along the shores of creeks and ponds. Dense vegetation along the shore is usually where I catch them. You can find a lot of smaller ones in the flooded grasses in the rainy season.

They are an endangered species. They are carnivorous, so if you put them in a tank with smaller fish when they get bigger, They will eat the fish.

The lilypads at 1:40 are Spadderdock.

iNaturalist is a great app to help identify (and track/record) different species, including those lily pads!

That really Kool first video I've seen of yours but to have access to do what you doing is the best I'm in the process of doing the same thing I have a few tanks just getting back into things after I have moved saltwater tanks Coral's and all was my thing about 11 years ago I now have more space hence the few tanks I have I'm doing mostly cichlids now but I also want to do a tank with just native species from the lake around me love to hit those lakes and waterways around you some time in future

Me: scours internet for hours to find unusual fish
Ryan: walks outside with a net
This was a lot of fun! That molly was beautiful. As were the other fish. I’m telecommuting; so more feedings (for the fish), more water changes, and more time in front of the tanks.

My problem is the extra feedings for myself
