As a newbie to orchard growing (Phalaenopsis) I have found your information most helpful.
When I purchase my orchards, they’re always in flower and the orchard medium appears to be very dry, which suggests they require watering, which I sometimes do, but very sparingly…. perhaps once a fortnight.
To enjoy the flowers at this time, I prefer to leave the flower spikes on for as long as possible when I get them home. However, once the flowers have died off and it’s time to repot the orchard, I have found they often have root rot, even though my watering up to this point has been very judicial - or not at all.
This suggests the orchard itself was possibly infected with fungus disease before being purchased. While I can save the orchard by repotting, I still find after a couple of weeks that the new potting mix is also affected by fungus diseases.
All the precautions I take like cleaning the roots off, choosing a new pot, sterilizing the infected plant with 3% hydrogen peroxide and flame sterilizing cutting equipment, doesn’t seem to have any affect in stopping new fungus diseases from appearing in the new medium.
I use straight bark for the medium and have used three different brands thinking the diseases were possibly in the medium prior to repotting.
I am totally perplexed as to why fungus diseases keep appearing despite all my hard work in trying to stop them.
    What am I doing wrong?

My idea...what happens if you do repot your orchid cause ofcourse better aration and cause of old media, but than orchids starts to die on you instead of feeling great in a new media🫠 This happened with 3 of my Phals...they were all fine and healthy and staying with me for 3 to 4 years. And than last fall...I decided to repot them, and the result was... the roots just died of one by one...2 of them even got steam rot 😢😢 So I lost them because I changed their conditions maybe?? 2 of them were in spagnum moss from even when I purchase them...and the third one was in a bark and spagnum moss 🤷‍♀️ I just wanted her to have more space, cause moisture didnt last in a pot for longer time anymore 🤷‍♀️

I got a beautiful phal orchid for my birthday and even though she is happily in bloom I repotted her right away and I am so glad I did. After soaking it I took all the old medium off and looked at the roots and it still had the nursery plug. When I started to get that plug off the plug came off in one piece because all the roots inside the plug were rotten so nothing was really attached to the plug but it was held on by a single root that grew around the plug and was tangled with another root. I am so grateful for your videos because I wouldn't have the confidence to trim dead roots or remove nursery plugs without your guidance. Thank you.❤

I was watering and feeding an orchid the other day. I noticed a few dead roots, so I thought I'll just cut these off. Ended up finding the nursery plug still in there...
When spring comes I'll have to repot a lot of orchids.

Thank you so much for all your advice on orchids. After making many mistakes, l found your website years ago. Because of your help, l have been growing orchids now for many years and can depend on them to bloom in overlapping succession from Thanksgiving through June, year after year. So beautiful, l have made them my home screen for my phone.
Now my family is buying them for themselves, with pitfalls. Biggest one is they keep treating them as if they were soil plants, then they come to me for rescue. Tomorrow, my son is bringing a miniature orchid he bought for his wife, because it actually has moss growing on the surface of the chips! I know what l am facing, but l didn't remember the percentage of hydroperoxide to use on the roots. 3%. Thank you!
l have only southern exposure from the side, in the northern latitude of the USA, on a windowsill, so l placed a see-through liner between them and the window to protect them and l still have light coming in. Also, I've learned to rotate them 180 Degrees while the leaves are forming to keep them growing straight and to leave the bloom spike in that position until the flowers are mostly open. Otherwise, the leaves and flowers grow every which way, overlapping each other because they are also turning to the light. Once the flowers are fully open, they still turn, but not as much and are beautiful!
You may also want to warn your followers not to take out the support sticks out of opaque container [without a take-out liner] for inspection. l was worried about my cat getting impaled when she jumped up on the windowsill when the orchid was not blooming, so l pulled it out. I wound up killing the orchid by stabbing one of the roots in the opaque container because l couldn't see where l was placing it.
Two questions... as the orchid plants get huge, do you keep enlarging the containers or does it still basically depend on the quality of the media breakdown for repotting? and
You mentioned that orchids don't like acidity, are concrete planters safe to use without a plastic liner? The decorative planters are beautiful, but l can't seem to find the right size liners to fit them. Is it safe for orchids to use polyurethane to seal the concrete pots?
Thank you again for your wonderful website. I'm an elderly lady that loves growing orchids!

My experience is with phalaenopsis potted in a ceramic pot, glazed on the outside but raw on the inside. The roots stick to the unglazed ceramic like glue. I need to repot my standard phal, so I will see if a long soak will assist with less root damage.

Hi Danny! 💕 I love your channel! You’ve been helping me take much better care of my orchids.
I’ve been trying to get my orchid to bloom again. The last blooms it had were around this time last year. To my surprise, my orchid produced a keiki recently at the top of one of the flower spikes! It doesn’t have any roots yet.
So I guess I need to watch a video about that too! But I was really hoping to get some more flowers soon, do you have any tips that could help? Also can I repot my orchid with a new keiki?
I would love to hear from you! Keep up the great content! This is a great channel, very informative.

Thanks in part to your videos, I decided to venture into orchid care. Sadly, i killed three... maybe four?
But, I'm proud to announce that I've managed to keep the last two alive. Not only are they alive, but they are doing very well after two months.
One had a very nice stem with a dozen flowers. All the flowers are doing great, and not a si gle on has died.
Thank you for your videos! And thank you for getting more into the "practical" side of orchid care. One thing I've learned is that the general stuff is a bit too broad sometimes. 😅

Thank you I love your series for beginners. I have a suggestion what to do if your kiekies don't grow roots? or Kiekies grow another kiekie instead of roots? My mother plant grew 2 kiekies 1 on each flower spike. 1 grew roots and I was able to remove it and plant it, (I also replanted the mother plant at the same time), the other 1 started a 2nd kiekie below it on the flower spike neither has grown any roots and now both have another kiekie growing at the same node as the original 2 kiekies and still no roots.

Thank you for another informative video. I have a phal that has an older leaf on the bottom that is still green but looks wrinkled. The rest of the leave are all good. Should I cut that one off? Is it taking energy from the rest of the plant? Also I have aerial roots that look dried out. Is it okay to cut them off? I repotted 2 phals in June and am hoping they'll bloom this year. Fingers crossed! Thank you for your videos, I've learned so much!

I have a phalaenopsis orchid, about 7years old always bloomed, well it started losing leaves and got very long in the body. ( Yellow and wrinkly leaves)
So I took it out, cut the body sealed with wax at the base removed old spagnum moss it came in, cut all the rotten roots put peroxide, used orchid soil I bought lots of bark in it.
Now it started growing lots of aerial roots and a flower spike but the leaves are wrinkling again like before and I have it sticking out of the pot like before.
There are 5 leaves left on it but two seem to have wrinkles but the aerial roots look really nice. I've taken two leaves off it since this fall.
Now all my orchids seem dry since I put them in the new orchid soil but they're not wrinkly or yellow but should I be soaking them every second day?
Can you take a guess at what's going on with that one? And why won't it stop getting wrinkles, I've followed all your advice🥺

Hey Danny, please help.I need info. I often "save" phalenopsis for garbage can. People think it will bloom often and when they realise they wont, they just dump them in garbage or in nearby forest. So I found one , actually two. They were together in a pot like twins. They recovered good but I thought that separating them would be good. Turned out it's not. They were stagnant (no newe leaves), for many years (found them 2017.) One withered and one is still alive , green healthy leaves, growing roots, but, no new leaves also no bloom . That orchid is among others saved from bin, and they bloom yearly. Did that happened to someone? I am really now contemplating to simply give up on it.

Out of laziness, I started using a ready potting mix with a substantial amount of cocopeat in it back in spring of 2023 for all my orchids - Phals, Miltoniopsisses and Cymbidiums. The tendency of the cocopeat component to compact in the bottom part of the pot is the most worrisome one as it keeps that layer wet while the coconut husk chips and pine bark higher up is already bone dry. Later I started to sieve out cocopeat crumbs prior to using the medium.
However, the big old Phal, now in full bloom, that had got the most of cocopeat is doing great so far, with numerous active roots densely populating the bottom part of the pot. But I expect to have to repot that Phal after the next bloom at the latest.
So, it all depends. Epiphytes can be fine too.

  • @familhagaudir8561
    @familhagaudir8561 5 месяцев назад

I'm lazy. I usually wait years my Phalaenopsis slowly wilt because the lower part has degenerated ( and the roots in the pot are long dead ).
When I repot them deeper for the upper stem to feel the moisture, the younger roots I poted, and new roots, start growing in a week or two, the leaves bounce back and it blooms well. Till several years later without repoting.
P.S. : Pest free bark that isn't deconposed, I re-use it for the same plant. Only do this with a PEST-FREE plant ( no snails ) and the pot must have alot of big extra holes for new air to cycle in the aging mix.

What do you do with the roots that are hanging over the pot when repotting?

Hi, I make sure to let them hanging still, they are adjusted to lots of air, potting them might damage them :)

Ps, any thoughts on using aloe on orchids?

I tried using peroxide on the roots of a sick orchid but I’m assuming the mold got into the roots because no matter what I did the mold seemed to keep coming back

Hi, mold spores might just be on the potting mixes you use, or even in the air. Make sure you remove all dead roots and dried bits to minimise mold as well!

@@MissOrchidGirl thanks so much for the reply. I’m afraid it’s already too late for that one. 😢 I did replace the mix as well as clean the pot. Everything looked good for a day or two until I saw that it came back. Tried peroxide + new mix + washing of pot a second time and the mold kept coming back.

I repotted my orchid and removed the dead roots. Now the orchid is top heavy, and it keeps falling out of the pot even though I put it within the potting mix. How can I keep it from falling out of the pot.
    Thank you

To be honest, that looks more like mycelium than mould... ❤

Why do you not put orchard back into same decorated pot after you get it repotted in a new inside pot.

I have seen others on RUclips wear rubber gloves when repotting. Why is that? Thanks for all you do!

Hi, not sure about others, but I use them due to my skin condition which causes me multiple tiny open splits that can get infected if I don’t bathe in hand cream and wear gloves when dealing with dirty things 🤭

I didn’t wear them only once and got splinters from the bark. It’s only to protect your hands

it helps keep your hands clean and prevent potential splinters

When you put fertilizer on your soil and then you touch it with your bare hands is going to burn your skin. It happened to me.

There was a time I was repotting, I found a tiny scorpion and another time a centipede crawled over my hand 😅 so I guess that’s another reason to wear gloves

Hi Danny my orchards I cleaned with lemon juice only the top. Now I see black sticky on the edges of one of my orchards is it bugs what should I do please help blessings 🙌

Hi, maybe there is some build up there, try just wiping the leaves with a cotton disk dipped in plain water to remove any pulp from the lemon. Lemon juice is good in combination with water to remove calcium stains from hard water, but if it’s just dust, there’s no need for lemon juice or other acids 😊
