I agree with you 100% on the man bun saying Clean cut and not put in a box. My mother has it bad for pressuring me to get my hair cut when I get a couple inches of hair on my head. I have never liked getting my hair cut and I'm putting my foot down on haircuts. I like my hair. Clean cuts aren't even my preferred style to begin with. I'm growing my hair out right now, too.

Hey so I’m starting to grow out my hair and my hair is starting to get longer towards the back and was wondering if that’s normal. Also both sides of my head have hair that’s almost the same length as on top
But how is the process for people with really thick hair like myself? Shouldnt I get a trim every now and then during the grow process so it doesnt get too thick on certain areas? My hair is really thick and "bristly?" (not sure if thats the correct translation), then again my barber once told me when I came to him with my longest hair at that time that I actually had curles hid underneath. Like you said you have something in between thick and thin hair and you obviously have curles which makes it much easier I feel.
