  • First Time Watching Babylon 5 The Gathering - Pilot Movie Reaction! In the Earth year 2257, a multitude of humans and non-humans gather deep in neutral space at a new station, Babylon 5, which has recently become operational. Babylon 5 was built as a neutral venue for discussing and resolving issues between the five major spacefaring races of the galaxy, the humans, Narn, Centauri, Minbari, and Vorlons. Commander Jeffrey Sinclair is in overall charge of the station.

Be aware, season one is a bit uneven in its quality. This was one of the very first serialized television shows so much of what you will see is world building, character development, and set up for future episodes.
In my opinion, it is one of the finest shows, not just sci-fi, ever produced. You’re in for an amazing ride.
Edit: this was the pilot. It came out significantly before the show began. There are a few changes you’ll see in the first episodes. Better makeup, less crappy guns, etc. 😊
Edit 2: this was the first show to make significant use of CGI. They were literally inventing it as they went along. Even during season one, you will see improvements and season two, three, and beyond there are space battles that hold up against today’s CGI.

@@theordinarylegend5094 As was commented, this is the pilot, so a number of things changed. The first officer was replaced by a Russian woman, who becomes a fan favorite. This first officer is largely never mentioned again. The telepath and Doctor both are replaced at the beginning of the new filming and are mentioned as having been transferred after this incident. We do see more of this telepath later. Londo and G'Kar are to spectacular alien characters if Earth is kinda a mid-level power. (Hence the reason earth ships and stations rotate to create gravity.

These guys basically pioneer computer-generated spaceships and the reason why things constantly get better is every few months they upgraded the systems and had a larger library of ships to work with.

You’ll find there’s a dedicated crowd of Babylon 5 reaction watchers and only a few reactors, some of which have completed or will soon complete the series, so they’ll find you eventually.
The pilot is a little rough but there’s something about it that makes you want to stick with it. There are some flashes of brilliance in the first season, which spends a lot of time world building, but by the time the series is in full swing, it is amazing. Good luck.
This was the first television show to utilize CGI (for budgetary reasons). It does start rather primitive but improves rapidly as well.

This is masterclass in long storytelling. Every piece of world building will have repercussions down the line, even if it is just a mention on newscast four seasons later to underscore the scene. Before this TV was episodic and no one used CGI. NASA even asked the show to use human fighter design for a space construction vehicle and was permitted if they keep the name "Starfury". Sadly that project did not get funding for actual deployment on ISS.

Not giving any spoilers as to the show's internal story, but you can look up "O'Neill Cylinder" or "O'Neill Colony" for a real-world description of what Babylon 5 is supposed to be. This one is 5 miles long in living area (as stated in the opening credits), with an additional 6 miles of projections and other non-habitable areas (you asked about the size).

A couple times you use the word alliance to refer to the alien cultures. Earth Alliance refers to Earth and its colonies; it's purely human. The main races seen in this -- the Narn, the Minbari, the Centauri, and the Vorlons -- and the major other powers in this region of space. Babylon 5 is like the UN Security Council: the biggest superpowers (US, China, Russia, etc) all have advisors who talk to each other to reduce the likelihood of global war.
The thing I've always loved about B5 is that most of the major characters have the same personality type at heart: they're patriots who want what's best for the people. The conflict comes from the fact that they define "their people" in different ways and see different paths forwards, just like in real life.
Oh, and much of the CGI actually was done on home computers, but they were Amigas, not Macs. This was done for budget & time reasons. In season one Babylon 5 had a budget of $650k per episode; for comparison, Star Trek: the Next Generation was $1.3 million and DS9 was $1.6 million in the same year.

  • @simongiles9749

One of the good things about B5 is that when it sets up mysteries, for about 99% of the time it already has an answer ready; unlike some other shows it doesnt just make it up as it goes along and then throws in some ass-pull in the last episode.
I say 99% of the time becuase occasionally real-life events mean that a few elements got changed or dropped. But overall, because it knows where it is going it is very satisfying story-telling.
It's also a birdge between episodic TV and modern serialisation, but this will become evident as you go on.

As others have said, this is quite possibly one of the greatest TV series ever made, and as they've also said, season one can be, shall we say, "bumpy". There are a few episodes ("TKO", "Believers", etc.) that polarize fans: some LOVE them, some skip them every time they re-watch. Judge for yourself, but know this: the show just keeps getting better, and better, and better - and the final episode is the greatest finale you'll ever see.

Yeah, a lot of people have said that this is one of the greatest TV series ever made and that season 1 is a bit shaky I'm looking forward to the journey. The final episode is probably the hardest episode to pull off especially for a beloved series I'm excited to get there.

Happy to see you take up the suggestion of watching The Gathering 🙂 Babylon 5 is definitely worth your time and its a great series that really benefits from careful plotting and very well written characters. And unlike a lot of series the arcs were planned in advance and make sense when revelations occur. A lot of modern shows like Game Of Thrones that are serialised owe a lot to this show that in my opinion was a masterful and classic use of that format. I think you'll very much enjoy sticking around watching B5 and very much looking forward to seeing you continue as you sound very intrigued. You'll soon get used to the different characters and races as you get further in.

Aliens: use Hi-Tech gravity beams and force fields to make a flying saucer.
Humans: Build mile long flying battleships with giant guns and 10 ft thick steel armor.
Human technology may be low end but it'll kick your ass.

You need to persevere with B5. Season One can seem cheesy and a bit all over the place but it's setting up the evets characters and story which will be vitally important in later seasons. Show really takes off from season 2 onwards.

  • @RetroRobotRadio

The commander's description of how the space station works isn't entirely accurate. The station always spends at the same speed but the further out you are from the gravity. Gravity is almost non-existent in the center. Along the outer edge it's a bit higher than Earth.

"Stuffed," as in, schtupped, filled, i.e., an insulting sexual allusion. Just in case you missed it. If I am wrong, and you got it, then nevermind, please and thanks.

Have fun, season one is mostly setup. Gets going in 2, hot in 3 and 4. 5 loses some steam as 4 tried to wrap the main stories under threat of cancel. Movies still was good and 5 did some world building for runoffs. 5 was more like season 1 in feel. This is just the beginning enjoy but don't skip the order, hints and critical info is dropped through out. The second time you will catch things you missed even in the pilot that takes years to pay off.
