Just a heads up, theres a new inventory setting that will create a new inventory tab for recent items, but you have to enable it in the display settings. So if you hit start > system > display, you’ll see a new option at the bottom to show the recent items tab. If you enable it, the first tab of your inventory will have all recent items in order of acquisition. Definitely helps with keeping track of all the new items. Hope that helps and enjoy the dlc!
Just a small piece of general advice: it's worth coming back to talk to the NPCs regularly. Their quest lines are pretty great, but it's a bit too easy to miss stuff by moving through the DLC too fast (happened to me).
Glad you have the mentality to switch things up. So many people I watched play the DLC never switched from the base game weapons they used. The new weapons are a huge part of the expansion, so I don't get people ignoring them.

I used mainly dlc weapons and ended up switching them every few bosses or so lol, I think I used around 10 ancient smithing stones and a ton of respecs on my first playthrough

Hahaha your journey to a bigger stagger boy was exactly the same for me. Tried to take him on with ornamental straight swords that decidedly did not stagger, so switched to a zweihander. Glad to see you back
I love how this game breaks our brains into thinking doing the same thing over and over will somehow get us through it. Every time. I KNOW i can go do something else, I KNOW i can respec, I KNOW theres probably something I'm not doing right, but fuck yeah I'll keep throwing myself at this boss.
What do you mean? Everything I've experienced from the DLC so far has told me that you should never do anything aside from spamming jump R2 with a big weapon to stagger break because enemies and bosses all have 40 hit combos and ungodly poise. It puts you into a box where you can't experiment with game mechanics like using incantations or weapon arts without immediately being punished and two shot. It feels like Sekiro level combat from the PvE side of things but you're still playing as a slow clunky Souls character.
So considerate of you to wait until we can watch this spoiler free 😄 I know, you said you had other stuff to do but still- thanks 🙏 And I will be shamelessly using your playthrough to help me discover missed items because you always play so thoroughly 😇

Coming back to this after 2 years, I really had to do a session or two of remembering buttons and getting that muscle memory back. I'd forgotten how to get off my damn horse even, Blackgaol Knight definitely feels like one where you're "supposed" to get smacked about a bit, come back and kill him later on. I did manage to get him relatively quickly but I think I came into the DLC a bit overlevelled as well and I had gone down to the church to the southeast of the starting area and explored a little around there as well.
Yeah same here. Like Mapo said, I too felt a little overwhelmed being thrown into a big open map again, but then slowly but surely I pick it back up, exploring all nooks and crannies, ticking things off the map, clearing every dungeon, taking down the big dudes that seem too scary and powerful at first, discovering how all the paths connect in classic FromSoft fashion "oh wait we're back here! nicel!", enjoying the new weapons and gear, getting my ahh whooped but also returning the ahh whooping. I just love this game.

I just want to let you know that most ashes of war have a follow-up attack with additional inputs. For example; both the Boodhound Fang and Morgott's sword have the initial attack, and if you press L2 again, it has a follow-up attack right after. Some weapons require a heavy attack input as well.

@@plipplop728 if you don’t transfer it around much you won’t have an issue, it wasn’t an “oh shit it broke” type moment but my HDMI cord wouldn’t go all the way in so i took it out and zoomed in close on the port and one of the tiny prongs was bent out of shape and it’s definitely because for the first time ever i transferred my PS5 in a bag with its HDMI cord still plugged in so i believe it bent and then bent the HDMI port prong. was a big bag, nothing else in the bag, but even the slightest bend can fuck things up

Don't worry, Mapo. I've seen many players/streamers struggle against that Blackgaol Knight for HOURS even after doing a refresh run of the base game. This is literally the dlc welcoming you for what's to come 😂👌
I both dreaded and loved starting the DLC and having every new enemy and area being instant potential death again. Humbling after feeling super OP at the end of the base game.
If you want to try new weapons but you won’t use them while not upgraded: you can get the bell bearings and buy all stones except for the last ones! And upgrading to the second to last level already gives you a good chance with a new weapon 😊
Just a tip for weapons that require a little more strength than you have. If you actually two hand said weapon. Your strength actually secretly increases by 1.5x to the weapon you're holding. meaning if you're strength is at 20 but the sword requires 24 strength. If you two hand the weapon you suddenly will gain all the benefits of having 25 strength
FYI, some things you forgot: - You currently have 20 Strenght, which means you can two-hand weapons up to 30 Strenght. This allows you to use Ghiza's Wheel and other weapons you mentioned you wanted to use. I'm pretty sure you planned your build for this, last time you respec'd! - Some Ashes of War have follow-ups, like the Bloodhound's Finesse you're using. The follow-up is either another press of L2 (Hand of Malenia has 2 follow-ups like this), or strong attack (R2), it'll be explained which button in the AoW's description. - Buffs are pretty strong in Elden Ring. Don't underestimate a Boiled Crab or Golden Vow! Bloodflame Blade is a good weapon buff for non-somber weapons in a Arcane build. - Jump attacks exist! If you're dual-wielding, it's jump+L1. Otherwise, jump+R2. - Arcane is pretty cool, that's why you respec'd from Int. Maybe wait a little bit to see the weapons the DLC will give to you before respec-ing again? Arcane is specially strong with bleed or poison weapons, otherwise your non-somber weapons should have the Occult infusion for the best damage output.

LOL yep I was like "I'm a 'veteran', an 'expert' even! I beat Malenia at RL1, Surely if I want a challenge I'll need to start in a NG+ cycle!" Then the Blackgaol Knight destroyed me for about two hours straight right at the start. 10/10, would get humbled again
I've finally finished the DLC so I can start watching your videos without worrying. Looking forward to experience this masterful expansion again through your playthrough. Don't worry about being rusty; it took me thirty minutes to remember the key bindings and search everywhere in the inventory and storage for my main weapon, before realising I'd loaded the wrong save.
so pumped for this playthrough! honestly think it's a great idea to dust off the ol fromsoft gaming muscles by throwing yourself into a boss battle. it was great seeing you get back in the swing of things! I've seen a lot of people say that this DLC is expecting you to use everything at your disposal, so don't shy away from utilizing spirit ashes or your physick flask etc in later battles if things are feeling more like a wall.
Ahh this is perfect, the stars have aligned. Finished my DLC playthrough last night and now I get to jump on yours. As others have already pointed out, but just to be sure there is a new inventory tab for recent items which you'll have to activate in the settings.
Mapo, quick tip, no spoilers, you can enable a new menu to have in your inventory, that displays the most recently picked up items. It will help you with the lore reading, since you won't need to look for them for minutes at a time :D

Mapos backo. Also a friendly reminder that moves like waterfowl dance and bloodhounds finesse have follow up attacks. A lot of weapons in the dlc also have different kinds of follow ups too on their skills so be sure to always read the descriptions carefully!
Glad these are back. It’s a bold strategy to not practice at least a little before jumping in 😅 don’t know if this game is the one you’d want to try that on. I came into the dlc in NG7+ and had to respec immediately bc of this guy.
LOL yep I was like "I'm a 'veteran', an 'expert' even! I beat Malenia at RL1, Surely if I want a challenge I'll need to start in a NG+ cycle!"
Then the Blackgaol Knight destroyed me for about two hours straight right at the start.

Don't worry about being rusty; it took me thirty minutes to remember the key bindings and search everywhere in the inventory and storage for my main weapon, before realising I'd loaded the wrong save.

The amount of time you spent on the knight is so real, that man hits like a truck and is bout as fast as a race car it was insane

I've seen a lot of people say that this DLC is expecting you to use everything at your disposal, so don't shy away from utilizing spirit ashes or your physick flask etc in later battles if things are feeling more like a wall.

As others have already pointed out, but just to be sure there is a new inventory tab for recent items which you'll have to activate in the settings.
I didn't judge you for dying to the blackgaol knight, exact same thing happened to me. NGL made me feel better 🤣
Mapo, quick tip, no spoilers, you can enable a new menu to have in your inventory, that displays the most recently picked up items. It will help you with the lore reading, since you won't need to look for them for minutes at a time :D

Also a friendly reminder that moves like waterfowl dance and bloodhounds finesse have follow up attacks. A lot of weapons in the dlc also have different kinds of follow ups too on their skills so be sure to always read the descriptions carefully!

While you've probably recorded well ahead, when you pick up an item the corner of the popup shows what tab in your inventory the item can be found in.
