    Aloha Tim! Your words of encouragement to your viewers are much appreciated. As an aside, just as Peter Lik has been your inspiration, your work is mine! I've taken many photos over the years, lots in Hawaii where my husband and I took visitors from all over the world to view and swim with dolphins. Photo opportunities galore. Many were quite spectacular, others not so much. As I am now on quest to dive back into photography, I find that I am intrigued by Light and Shadows and how important they are to bring strong elements of depth to an image. That's my challenge...to really understand from an artistic standpoint, how to optimally use light and shadows. Thanks Tim!

    Great guy. Very upbeat and unassuming. However, like Jeff Maimon said, there is NO instruction or tutorial about composing a quality shot. He discusses his initial shortcomings as a photographer, and elaborates on his improvement...but there is no instruction at all in this video. I was expecting much more because he seems like such a class guy.
    EDIT: (10/25/2020) I purchased Tim’s Masterclass Course, yesterday. In it, he provides an exceptional, hour-long presentation on Composition. This guy is an outstanding instructor. Very clear, straight to the point, no fluff, reviews critical information, shows excellent examples. If I only learn one new thing from each of his videos, I will be a far better photographer. The shots I took today were done with his mindset. This guy is the real deal.

    Thank you for taking your time to help others achieve there goals. It’s really good to hear I’m not the only person that feels depressed or deflated as you call it. I’m new to this type of art. I was a decorative painter in the Faux world and was good at that, I just need to keep telling myself this will not happen overnight just like the decorative painting took yrs.

    Love your work. I love landscape photography and one of the things I struggle with is finding locations in a place that doesn't have these grand vistas and snow capped mountains. Not in a position to travel overseas just now so keeping motivated to get out and about within a few hours of home is a bit of a struggle. 😀

    I do a variety of subjects with my photography, but the largest percentage is nature photos. I do landscapes, wildlife, and some macro of insects, plants, and any other interesting items I can find. For my landscapes, i have a good eye for composition, but don't always think the places around me hold any interest as a photo. My second issue is for your next video. I don't always remember to check my camera settings, and a lot of times I will look thru the viewfinder and just adjust speed or aperture until the subject looks good to me. I don't have it in my head what the settings should be for certain conditions. If I'm asked what the settings are for a certain photo, I always have to go back and look. I don't have much experience with post processing either. I do a little bit before printing and displaying. I'm proud to say that I have sold some prints at a few shows with the camera club I belong to, but I would truly like to do more, to become better, and to earn more with this hobby I'm so passionate about.

    I'm mainly a sports photographer but travel a lot. Especially, now that I'm retired. My problem is that my wife always wants to go go go (sight-seeing) and I only get to shoot targets of opportunity. No planning goes into the shots. I get lucky sometimes but nothing like what you're doing. Just once, I'd like to take a solo trip and plan a bunch of shots in advance.

    I like architecture photography, especially abandoned architecture. The main problem I have is getting good composition. So I use the “Spray and Pray” method which I know is greatly frowned upon in the photography community. But it’s the only at times to get what I want.

    Hi Tim, thank you for sharing your experience, as you said too busy with work too little time, for me photography is a hobby something for the soul, and I mainly struggle with the composition, for your opinion what is the best way to improve composition, what you must consider or what to look for so the photo will be a "wow" not just nice. thank you.

    Tim, your photos are amazing. That said, your “tutorials” don’t feel that instructive to me. You mention that composition is important, but then say very little about how to go about composing a great photo. Did I miss it?

      Hi James, the game changer for was using the four-step system. If you start using it, and if you practice, then your photos will improve dramatically. Watch video 3/3 to learn more.

    Pretty disappointing to see you allow people to walk all over these farmer's fields to get that image. What happened to leave no sign?

    • @TimShieldsPhotography
      @TimShieldsPhotography  5 лет назад

      Hi James, I did not host a workshop in the lavender fields. I also did not see anyone walking on the plants. If I did, I would have addressed it.

    • @mta00jtl
      @mta00jtl 5 лет назад

      Tim Shields fair enough on the workshop front and appreciate you saying that you would prevent that from happening. However in the video itself there are literally images of tripods in the plants and photographers straddling the lavender! Recent articles have highlighted how frustrated the farmers are with this behaviour. It's all fine to get permission, if you did, from the farmer and ensure that you do not cross the plant area. It's another to be setting up equipment in over the plants and having people standing in them. Can the perfect image not be captured from the paths?

  • @darrenrose8263
    @darrenrose8263 5 лет назад +4

    Shame that you’ve let attendees on the workshop trample over the lavender that the farmer has grown and makes a living from. Not setting a good example for your followers who may also follow suit and think that potentially trespassers and damaging property is fine

    • @TimShieldsPhotography
      @TimShieldsPhotography  5 лет назад +1

      Hi Darren, I did not host a workshop at the lavender fields, and I did not see anyone damaging property or stepping on the plants. If I had witnessed that, I would have addressed it on the spot. The lavender fields attract tens of thousands of people from around the world which helps financially support the economies of some very small towns, including the farmers.

    90% of landscape photography is about being in the right place at the right time. People think someone is a great landscape photographer but all he does is traveling to those well known spots and take the same images as thousands did before. Make sure to have some decent light and you will have a great portfolio by the time. No talent needed. Cant see those standard images any more.
