@@JakeSloan I am fairly certain IlikeTRAINS5 is referencing a comparison video that Peter Lindgren did, which was exactly as described above; no actual comparisons between shots, just him sitting and talking. That video was terrible. This video was so much better.
Think the same. And best guys are the ones who are not talking about their experience but just reading stats. A camera review sitting on the table is like testing cars this way.
Great review. From what I see, the A7iii will still be an outstanding pick for 95% of us non-professionals and we can buy an exceptional lens with the extra $1400. Thanks for putting this together, I can tell you spent a lot of time doing it.
This is an impressive outstanding video! I get tired and bored when people go on and on about the camera comparison specs; You show us in direct real-world footage how these two awesome cameras perform in different settings and in specific environmental conditions. You ROCK Jake! Thumbs up my friend from Kingsport, TN!
Appreciate the fact that you linked a raw material for me to download for free to see if my laptop can do well in editing! You saved me %0 bucks of renting a camera!
The a7iii is an amazing camera for the hybrid shooter. Even tho the low light isn't as good as the A7siii, it's still waaayy better than everyone else. Great video 👌🏽
Always appreciate that you're actually outside in the field talking to the camera and using it. The A7III is still one of the best hybrid camera's out there. Can't wait for the new version to come out!
I think the A7iii is something special, and after watching this have zero desire to upgrade. The photo comparison put the nail in that coffin. Excellent video, btw.
The one thing I notice immediately is that the SIII has much better detail both in photo and video, and I think it's because of the lack of AA filter. When I moved from the original A7S mark I to the A7III, I noticed that my A7S had much better detail even though it was only 12mp. I find the A7III rather quite soft when you look at edges or high contrast scenes. I also notice the same thing with my old Fuji X-Pro1 which also has no AA filter, it has a much nicer/sharper look (though very bad dynamic range compared to the A7III. Still, the A7III is a great camera with a lot to offer but I do miss the details of the S series. Great video.
Great video Jake! I do like ur point about the autofocus being usable even in extreme under/over exposed conditions. But the a7iii seems to be holding its own in a lot of situations!
Thank you so much! Yeah aside from the great lowlight performance of the auto focus and of course much more options for video shooting the a7iii is still a FANTASTIC camera for all around creators. Cheers!!
My thoughts exactly,I mean we hear everything about it having greater dynamic range ans better colour science but is it worth the extra 2 thousdand dollar upgrade...not so sure,am glad I came across this review
I've been researching different cameras to buy for the past 6 months but somehow only stumbled across your videos today. All I can say is I'm so glad that I did! You have the most in depth and useful reviews + comparisons that I've come across, and seeing the cameras being used in the field have made it so much easier for me to decide what will work best for my situation. Thank you so much and keep doing what you do!
Thank you so much!!! That is the reason I do the reviews the way I do. I want to show everything in use in the real world as much as possible to help people decide
No need to teanscode for proxies. Just enable proxy recording and the proxy file is saved on the same memory card in the folder labeled "SUB". After that it is just a couple clicks in Adobe Premier to use the proxy.
Richard's World Traveler that is one of the workflows that works well. I haven’t had the need to do it yet but I could see people with less powerful or older computers it would be a life saver
This comparison showed me I don't need s series... A7iii is enough... Though cheaper a7iv I might purchase later on.. I love photos and get photo job... Often. You are doing really good content
Thank you for the comparison, I see that A7III still has some advantages over A7SIII. I just want the flipping screen though but I think I'll hold on to my A7III for now. Their shots are indistinguishable side by side.
They are very close very very close. I would wait for the a7iv which will probably come next year and will likely get some of the video features from the A7sIII. Cheers!
Awesome vdo. I absolutly clear about the image quality. I would like to know about Sony a7iii can use for vdo stock footage such as shutterstock, adobe stock. Because it is reasonable price for me. Thank from Thailand.
Thanks for that video, I use my A7III for photography only (for film I have a RED Komodo) and I was in doubt if I should upgrade for the A7SIII. Now I know that I don’t need that! 🙏🏻 thanks!
Hey Jake, I have an a6500 at the moment. I mainly do video but also really enjoy shooting portraits and landscape photography. Do you think the a7sIII would provide a good enough image quality for paying clients who want portraits??? Eventually I'd want a camera for video and a separate camera for photography, but at the moment I cannot afford to do that. Excellent video by the way. It's great to see a reviewer who actually provides well thought out real world examples instead of just talking about the cameras behind a desk!
Thank Nathan! I LOVE the a7sIII for photo work and I have used it for commercial work without anyone having an issue. I actually like it a bit better for some photo work since it has such great dynamic range. I would have no issue using it for photo work at all, I did a video about it here and do touch briefly on portraits: ruclips.net/video/pCBGg-oeGJ4/видео.html Cheers!
Thanks for the excellent video, the real world side by side comparisons are really good, the cave comparison is on point. Wondering if you shot everything in the cave just handheld and if you used the Gyro data to stabilise that footage? Would be really cool to see a video demonstrating hand held Gyro stabilised footage of the A7Siii vs the non-Gyro stabilised footage in a real life situation - e.g. walking up and down hills/mountain side, walking in the caves on uneven surfaces and maybe demonstrating how it looks when you do a hop (perhaps over a stream) as well. The Gyro data is really intriguing.
You're welcome! In the cave I used a tripod in the cave since I was running in and out a bunch and I wanted to keep things exactly in the same spot. I plan on doing a comparison video with gyro vs standard vs active stabilization soon! Cheers
I tend to do more video, am thinking the Sony A7Siii may be the better for me...both look like great cameras though! Great comparison review on both cameras Jake!
You're the best! Hope you reply to my comment too.. So detailed and so much to show, day time, cloudy, walking, driving, dark cave moments everything included! I've see you replied to every one of your comments, your the king! Maybe little advice to me? So if I'm beginner and don't wanna spend 10k on a gear + specific memory cards that cost 300-400$, lenses etc.. Would you recommend 7 lll to get started into videography and photography? I do have experience, just wanna step up more into intermediate level or better save up, spend some extra money and get the beast 7S lll?? Can't decide 7Slll, 7lll or 7c? Thanks!!:)

Yeah dude, price is never lie. But My budget still on a7 iii.. Do you recommend this camera in 2021, still worth it to buy? Probably i use for videography, filming, hobby, sometimes job maybe.
I wished you had compared the APS-C video option of the A7SIII with full frame video shoots. Splitted into footage done with full frame lenses versus APS-C lenses.
Love this location! I was just out there the other night shooting the Aurora! I only have the a7s and some a6xxx at the moment though. The new cameras look amazing
Oh man!!! I was out there the other night hoping to catch the Aurora too but apparently I missed it! My hope was to film the Aurora rather than do the typical time lapse of it. I drove to the end of arch angle road. Where did you end up and what time did the Aurora come out?
@@JakeSloan That would be great, i already got 2 of them, and im struggling to get color match between them :/ There is even difference in white balance, a7siii looks a lot warmer, i have to lower down wb in a7siii for about 1000-1500k to match with a7sii in daylight
Thanks Jake - very useful comparison. Im a hybrid shooter mainly for social media content. Im just trying to figure if the A7S3 is overkill for my business. I really want my next camera to have excellent AF as I have to work so fast. I considered the A7C but cant figure if the ergonomics would slow me down.
Great comparison. And the most obvious thing is the 10 Bit 4:2:2 - it is so obvious! Amazing! Photography: For my eyes and based on the photos in your video: A7III all the way ... but I'm a video guy - so it really doesn't matter to me :) Low light - of corse the S-model is far better, but I know that from my good old A7SII, which still works pretty good. If I wouldn't use the FS5II, I would get the A7SIII. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and the great video! Take care!
I agree the 10bit 4:2:2 is just so much better even after RUclips crushes it lol. I still plan to use my a7III for photos but video and just run and gun stuff the A7sIII will be it. Photos are great too but the video is just wonderful. Thanks for watching! Cheers
Jake Sloan that 10 Bit dynamic range is just so wonderful! Makes everything look so......(over used I know) Cinematic. So 🔥.....the flip out screen and touch menu though.....and it still has custom buttons lol
I have a very low level question from a newbie to nature photography: How do you protect your fancy cameras when you are outside during the winter time ? I would also be interested in how you protect your camera outside in the rain. Thanks.
Another awesome review Jake! Currently have the A7III for Real estate work. Would you think the A7Siii would be a good hybrid for photo and video for real estate?
well if you plan to use my affiliate link then YES. lol So if all you do it real estate photos and video then I would say sort of. The video is a big improvement in dynamic range etc so if you are doing higher end properties that you want to show off the interior as well as the views through the windows at the same time then yeah this camera will do that. If you want to film from outside into the interior or the other way around then yes since it has the shockless white balance (transitions smoothly through white balance changes) but if you don't really need those things then I'd stick with the A7III until next year when the a7iv is released. It will likely inherit some of the video features etc and be a better photo camera as well.
Jake Sloan totally agree! I shoot my videos in 60 frames so having 4K 60 10bit 422 would be niceee, could always use a7iii for photos and siii for video
Very true and the 4K 60 and 120 is just amazing on this camera. I’m pretty much doing the same. A7iii is photos and a7sIII is video (and photos in a pinch or when I’m traveling light) cheers!!
Nice and comprehensive comparison, thank you, Jake Sloan! I currently own an A6300, I use it mainly for video. I saw the difference between A7iii and A7Siii. But I wonder, is there a mind-blowing difference between A6300 and A7iii in the video department, or should I go straight to A7Siii? It's a big financial difference as you know. Thank you! I would really appreciate your opinion.
The difference between the a6300 and a7III would not be huge, you would see a bigger difference between the 6300 and the A7c which has better colors and much better auto focus plus the flip out screen and the battery light would be considerably better.
@@JakeSloan Thanks! Got it! I'll stick to A6300 for now, I'll get a 18-105 f4, besides my Sigma 16 f1.4. I'll save some more till I'll have enough for A7Siii, mean time maybe A7IV will be released.
I would go with the A7III for more photo work or the A7rIII if you can afford it. If you can wait a few months the rumors are that Sony will be releasing the A7IV early next year. That said the A7III is a great price right now at 1,600 USD on sale
Hi, you mention that A7S3 isn't that good for astrophotography - I'm planning to get into more of Astrophotography, I'm confused between the A7C (which is same as the A73 in many ways) and the A7S3, but the lack of ability to shoot the milky way in all its glory will be a deal breaker for me. At the same time, A7C is just 8bit which is annoying. I would love to hear your advice please, thank you.
Great video - thanks. I have an A7S3 and was wondering if it was worth getting the A73 for photos as I want to print around A3 size, ore do you think the A7S3 is going to be good enough. Mainly portrait photos? Cheers again
The A7sIII is good enough for A3 with no issues. if you want a higher megapixel camera for photo work (I do a bit as well) then I would recommend waiting to see what the A7iv has to offer later this year. Cheers!
Great review, appreciate the side by sides. What lense are you using? I’m waiting for a restock of the A7siii since I plan on shooting 90% video with it.
@@JakeSloan that was on my list too lol. But I really want to get more into content creation (video). Are you planning on an updated review? I'd like the A7siii before my vacation next month but stock dates keeping being pushed up 😭. I'd love to explore some more sony alternatives (preferably full frame)
@@JakeSloan Hmm it all works for me in 4k, actually thinking back I'm not sure about the Eye tracking but the Face tracking and object tracking is definitely there.
GREAT video!! So informative and no bloating in the video. Has that Duo mic go? I have the Rode Videomicro and I actually think it's fantastic but not when the mic is facing away from you when you're switching from vlogging yourself to something in front of you lol I might leave the Videomicro for talking head stuff in my studio and get the Duo for vlogging
the d4 duo is excellent for vlogging etc exactly because of this! it's a great vlogging mic, I have a review filmed just need to edit and release it lol
Sir a7rii is best for photography or a7c..which sharpnes dynamic range in. lowlight Excellent images quality which camera suggest me..a7iii a7rii a7c..please reply
I was expecting raw footages to grade to see if I want to buy the camera..the only thing I don't like about the A7 series is that the slog-2 are complicated to grade..does 10 bit on the a7siii make it better than the 8 bit color on the a7iii to grade footage?
There is a link in the description but also some slog 3 files can be found through the link in this video: ruclips.net/video/YfuBIppRVwA/видео.html in short though slog 3 is fantastic and 10 bit makes a huge difference in color grading in post
Hey man ! Loved the comparison ! I'm interested in the videos you make of your hikes, cave exploration, and so on, do you have an other channel with them ? Cheers !
I have neither camera, but am looking to get a good hybrid. Should I wait til the A7 IV?? R5? A7s3? I shoot photography more than video, probably like 65/35, 70/30
If you can wait till early next year then wait. Sony will likely release or at least announce the a7iv and it would be a great camera for you. The R5 and r6 are excellent photo cameras if you only ever need to shot short clips of video here and there but the over heating issues really need to get worked out to be able to use them for significant video use.
Yeah then you could def go for the R5 or R6. If you do lots of landscape or bird photography then go for the R5 but if you do Astro or low light then go for the R6. It has better low light performance
Preorder the A7SIII last week and have been questioning my decision since. Glad to find this video and reaffirm my decision! Was thinking maybe go A7III and save some money (I pretty much only want to shoot video) but this video solidifies my decision. Thanks!
My only gripe with Sony including the A7siii is that magenta/purple shift in the shadows and in blues in general... Easy enough to fix especially now with the 10 bit but still not on par with Sony's own cinema line.
Great video. I'm new to Sony, so what's a good all-rounder first lens for the these two cameras? What lens did you use for the side-by-sides in the vid? Thanks.
Glad to hear it. Most all of these shots were filmed with the tamron 17-28 which is a great lens! For a great all rounder I’d look at the tamron 28-75 or the 17-28 depending on what kind of stuff you shoot. I have a video of the lenses I use and why here: ruclips.net/video/eqVEIj_zPww/видео.html
Thanks for being super informative and providing an honest opinion about which camera you feel is best for which type of shooter, it was exactly the video I was looking for thanks man! Super well done visually too!
I recently discovered your channel when I needed to set up my Ronin SC. I can't wait to finally get my hands on an a7SIII so I'm saving this one. BTW, what lav mic are you using? I need a good one and the audio quality is great!
Thanks! For almost all my on camera audio I use the Deity D3 Pro mic. You can see my review of it here: ruclips.net/video/Jf_fXBjaIUw/видео.html Cheers!
I did a whole video about the a7sIII photography here: ruclips.net/video/pCBGg-oeGJ4/видео.html but it Depends on the end use of the photos (print vs web etc) I’ve used mine for a lot of paid jobs that were mostly destined for web but I did just sell a few photos for a catalog. I would go higher megapixel (a7riii or rIV

Glad to hear you can use crop lenses with the clear image zoom work around .
I was super excited to find this out too! Not sure it will work with all APSC lenses but even if its some that's fantastic. Cheers
Awesome vid bro!
Thanks brother! I can't wait till you have your own. I hope we get the chance to meet up and create something awesome together some day
Dude thanks for putting out another amazing video. I wanted to ask what lake/ ice cave you're at...it seems like an awesome hiking/camping spot.
The lake is called Upper Reed Lake and those caves are part of Byron Glacier! Cheers
I wished you had compared the APS-C video option of the A7SIII with full frame video shoots. Splitted into footage done with full frame lenses versus APS-C lenses.
I would have liked to do that as well
Love this location!
@@JakeSloan Yeah I have a astro modded a7s and have been waiting to try shooting video this year. I'm sure it will be amazing on the new a7siii.
Maybe we will get the chance to do something together!
can you tell me plz where is this location.. I loved it and I wanna visit it As soon as possible
Awesome video! Maybe didn't notice, but what lens did you shoot the video on?
This was shot on Sony 24gm tamron 17-28 and tamron 28-75
Great comparsion Jake, is there any possibility You could make a comparsion between older brother a7s ii?
I would love to and I think I know someone with an a7sII so if it's possible I will do my best to make It happen!!
The a7c would be the one I’d recommend honestly. It’s really great for video work.
So 🔥.....the flip out screen and touch menu though.....and it still has custom buttons lol
and crispy and buttery and I think there are one or two more words all the cool "you tubers" use...
Fantastic video! Thank you so much for the valuable information.
Thank you very much and you're welcome!
I have a very low level question from a newbie to nature photography: How do you protect your fancy cameras when you are outside during the winter time ? I would also be interested in how you protect your camera outside in the rain. Thanks.
I use a rain cover from Think Tank when needed but most of the time I don't worry about it unless it will be in heavy rain
On the low light test, were both cameras at the same aperture and focus on the same area?
yes they were
Another awesome review Jake!
Im making the switch to mirrorless. I do more pictures over video. Would you recommend a7iii or a7sii?
It is actually very good for astrophotography it just isn't quite as detailed as the A7III is but it does much better in low light
@@JakeSloan Thank you so much for helping me!!
@@JakeSloan Subscribed! From this and two other of my fake accounts, thanks for being so down to earth! ^_^
Astounding comparison thank you.
Thanks!
@@JakeSloan Jake I think you may have done the most work ever for a comparison between 2 cameras.
Cheers!
@@JakeSloan thanks and appreciated
Thanks for the comparison Jake. What lens did you use for the talking head part at the beginning?
You’re welcome! I used the tamron 17-28 for all my talking head shots in this video. Cheers!!
Which camera best for faimly photography..extremely lowlight..a7sii is best in 2022. Other options now...please suggest me camra body
I would try and get the A7IV if you can
Great review, appreciate the side by sides. What lense are you using? I’m waiting for a restock of the A7siii since I plan on shooting 90% video with it.
Nice! I still shoot a ton on mine though I do use the a7iv now as well
@@JakeSloan that was on my list too lol. But I really want to get more into content creation (video). Are you planning on an updated review? I'd like the A7siii before my vacation next month but stock dates keeping being pushed up 😭. I'd love to explore some more sony alternatives (preferably full frame)
Can some make a video on how to set up the a7s iii for vlogging/filmmaking
I have one here: ruclips.net/video/tX9OWvV67cQ/видео.html
Cool comparison, btw a7iii offers eye tracking in HDMI as well, you just need to set HDMI settings into (24p only) or 30 whichever you’re shooting. ✨
True but also must be in lower than 4K recording for real time tracking while using HDMI.
@@JakeSloan Hmm it all works for me in 4k, actually thinking back I'm not sure about the Eye tracking but the Face tracking and object tracking is definitely there.
face tracking and object tracking yes but not eye in video. eye does work in photo mode though which is really nice
I've recently traded 2 cameras and 4 canon lenses to get both of these cameras and 3 lenses.
Wow nice!!
Great video Jake. Really informative!
Glad you liked it!
What lenses did you use in the video? Thanks :) This video was super helpful!!
I shot almost everything with the Tamron 17-28 and some of it was the Sony GM 24mm 1.4 Thanks for the kind words!! Cheers
Super nice comparo.. . samples are very helpful. Thanks man! Do you have that A7iv vs A7siii?
not yet but I am making one
@@JakeSloan thanks man! For sure it'll be more than worth the wait.
GREAT video!! So informative and no bloating in the video.
Has that Duo mic go? I have the Rode Videomicro and I actually think it's fantastic but not when the mic is facing away from you when you're switching from vlogging yourself to something in front of you lol
I might leave the Videomicro for talking head stuff in my studio and get the Duo for vlogging
the d4 duo is excellent for vlogging etc exactly because of this! it's a great vlogging mic, I have a review filmed just need to edit and release it lol
@@JakeSloan awesome bro! Keen to watch it when it's out 😎😎
Sir a7rii is best for photography or a7c..which sharpnes dynamic range in. lowlight Excellent images quality which camera suggest me..a7iii a7rii a7c..please reply
the A7III and A7c are the same sensor. I would recommend the A7c since it has a better focus system. but if you just do photography the a7rII is best
Hello m’y friend thank you for the review, may I know which song is it please ? In your video. Thanks a lot
I have no idea, this video was made too long ago to remember lol
Cheers !
Not specifically I do try and include some of the story of getting to these places in some of my videos on this channel though
@@JakeSloan Too bad, would be cool. Maybe an idea to think about, you seem to live an exciting life :)
@@JakeSloan Yeah, I won't really need to shoot like 10mins continuous ever, and if I do, it'd be in like 4k30 which doesn't overheat apparently.
Yeah then you could def go for the R5 or R6. If you do lots of landscape or bird photography then go for the R5 but if you do Astro or low light then go for the R6. It has better low light performance
Would an Apsc lens on a full frame body perform better than on apsc body?
Not enough to make a big difference. plus if you do photo work you will loose a fair amount of resolution. Cheers
Very helpful video. Thanks Jake!
Excellent I'm glad it helped!! Cheers
Preorder the A7SIII last week and have been questioning my decision since. Glad to find this video and reaffirm my decision! Was thinking maybe go A7III and save some money (I pretty much only want to shoot video) but this video solidifies my decision. Thanks!
Fantastic I’m glad it helped you! You’ll love the a7sIII when you get it. It’s absolutely fantastic
Nature Scenes are mesmerising can let me know where this is shot (which place on earth is this )
this is in Alaska
For astrophotography do you recommend the a7iii even if you're shooting videos of the sky? You said both are good but the megapixels are important
for videos I would go with the A7sIII
My only gripe with Sony including the A7siii is that magenta/purple shift in the shadows and in blues in general... Easy enough to fix especially now with the 10 bit but still not on par with Sony's own cinema line.
Agreed
I may have missed it, but did you talk about the dual ISO capability on the siii?
I touched on it briefly but I talk a bit more about it in my low light video.
@@JakeSloan Thanks, I'll check it out!
Thanks for being super informative and providing an honest opinion about which camera you feel is best for which type of shooter, it was exactly the video I was looking for thanks man! Super well done visually too!
Youre welcome!!
Awesoome color , in videos love it
thank you!
How is the a7siii when it comes to product photography or portrait photography, like in paid jobs?
I did a whole video about the a7sIII photography here: ruclips.net/video/pCBGg-oeGJ4/видео.html but it Depends on the end use of the photos (print vs web etc) I’ve used mine for a lot of paid jobs that were mostly destined for web but I did just sell a few photos for a catalog. I would go higher megapixel (a7riii or rIV
I like the A7III colors better personally.
They are very close, much closer than I thought they would be for sure
