Congratulations, great review. I am a PhD student in exercise physiology, and typically also we test the smartwatch or sportwatch (garmin and polar) in the our laboratory, HR with polar H10, or with the portable metabolimeter cosmed k5 to compare the estimate of vo2max that watches make, as well as steps and gps signal with pace in min/km, or for the comparisons of ventilatory thresholds. Thanks for the review! It's good to see that optical sensors start to perform better these days. Also, you've made a review of Venu 2 but what about making comparison of some well established device like Fenix 6 which also use FirstBeat metrics just like Venu2, but unlike Venu2 it has polished firmware. And Garmin seems to be infamous for releasing devices which has less than optical performance in the beginning.

Hi Rob, thank you for your comprehensive review as usual. In relation to GPS acquisition, I was not very clear on how you went about this. Generally speaking, in my experience, if a watch does not pick up GPS acquisition immediately and you then take off on your ride (or run, whatever) it will not pick up GPS acquisition until much later if at all. I recall DC Rainmaker has confirmed as much in his reviews of Garmin and other units. I would wait for the GPS acquisition standing still or perhaps walking in a short distance or loop from your start point if you think that will help. The real issue with GPS acquisition is time taken whilst standing still; that can depend on the watch and in particular whether the watch has GPS cacheing. If it has GPS cacheing it should not take very long at all. I can't speak to the GT 3, but in my experience with the Huawei GT2e, i had no problems with GPS acquisition as long as a I waited (usually a short time). Hope that helps in the future. Cheers from Down Under.

I've worn my new GT3 to an outdoor biking session (1 hour) and a gym workout (also 1 hour). HR during bike ride was very accurate, on par with my Garmin Venu 2 (the graphs, average HR and max HR on both devices almost matched with only 1-2 beat differences). Unfortunately in the strength training session, after about 30 minutes the GT3 HR began to drop unexpectedly, then jumped up, dropped again. In general it behaved erratically in the lower end of my active HR range until 10 minutes before the end of the workout, where it started to pick up my (supposedly correct) heart rate again. In comparison, my old Apple Watch and current Venu 2 never had such a problem in a workout. I will try the GT3 again next week in the gym to see how it works

Hi, my update: the second time in the gym, I noticed when my HR started to drop and I tightened the strap around my wrist. It then read my HR much more correctly. I'm ok with the GT3 now, but still, I prefer the sporty look of the Venu 2S when doing workouts. :))

@@dieu-trangvu4502 I love the body battery on the Venu 2. Wish they had this on the GT3. @@simdencard Me too, I'm happy with the GT3 now. I find that HR accuracy depends a lot on the fit of the device, and once it's solved, no more complaints. Its sleep tracking and training recovery features leave something to be desired though. I feel that it doesn't "know" me as well as the Venu 2. But I'll give it more time.

If you tighten the watch to you wrist it will be spot on. However, I agree with you that when the watch is loose the HR goes up and down. That said, the GT3 is easily one of my favourite smart watches and one of the best looking in the market in my opinion.

I stopped using the sleep tracking function of my GT3 after it gave me a report on my sleeping patterns after a night I wasn't even wearing the watch. And I'm still unclear what I'd actually do with the info on SpO2. Glad to see though that the GPS and heart rate sensors are precise. I found that if you stand still you get a GPS signal in around 15 seconds and are then good to start your workout. Overall really happy with the watch and the amount of data and insights I get from it via the Huawei health app.

Great review, thank you! Something I would be interested in as far as GPS accuracy goes is how accurate the distances measured are. I have a GT2e, and my daughter has a GT, and we found they consistently measured lower distances than my Suunto Spartan Sport WHR - typically about 2 to 2.5% for the GT2e and 3% for the GT. This included running on courses; the Parkrun courses are measured with a measuring wheel, and the GT2e would usually only measure 48 to 4.9km on the 5km course.

Hi! In the end I would want to know what artifacts the GPS shows, which in turns tells us if it will likely predict too long or too short routes. If it loses signal a lot, it will likely track to short a route; if it is very noise, it will be too long. But those are just my first thoughts😊. Have a great day!

@TheQuantifiedScientist Thank you for your great work! I know it's been a very long time since the review of GT 3, but do you happen to remember if during the tests the continuous heart rate monitoring was set to "smart" or to "real time" mode? I recently found that real time mode improves significantly the sleep tracking performance (with the downside of slightly increased battery drain), and it seems to make sense because in the so called smart mode there are time intervals of 5-10 minutes during the night when the heart rate data is missing. And less data should most likely imply less accuracy, I assume.

I bought this watch five weeks ago and I'm not impressed. Sleep tracking doesn't work at all. It shows me as sleeping when I cuddle my cat on the couch watching the loudest, scariest movies. Who would sleep with so much movement and instant heart rate change?
This watch pretends to have 5675698 sports profiles, but can't detect anything at all. It doesn't even ask or notice when my pulse goes above 100 and it doesn't recognize any of my activities.
    It's a gimmick, nothing more.

(A question) Hello Rob, you have amazing and very informative videos, and one should definitely watch these series for real analysis. I've been watching your reviews for Galaxy 4, plenty of Garmin watches, and now this. One thing I really cannot figure out: In all your tests, dreem2 (EEG) device never identifies any deep sleep stage roughly after 3AM. for 4-5 hours until you wake up. Thus, all other devices seem to miscalculate these stages. Is it really possible in real life? In my simple Huawei Band Pro 3, I see the calculation fits that 1.5 hrs sleep cycles although there are breaks from time to time which is normal. Eventually, I'm really curious if the dreem2 device should be the ultimate reference. Thank you in advance if you reply this and keep up good work!
