tbh, these are my favorite episodes, that accurately capture the experience of keeping an old performance car in good shape. The project car life means endlessly chasing down little faults and problems, learning new fabrication skills, making deals for parts in sketchy back alleys, etc, etc. It's not all flashy bodywork, hot mods and screaming dyno sessions.
But it's worth it, because these cars are special in a way that new cars are not.
No they're not
I like the updates on previous builds. I become somewhat invested in them and want to know what breaks and what modifications are being done to improve/maintain them.
The headlamp swap was the right choice for sure 👍
Would love to see periodic updates and fixes on this build. This is such a nice build and a unique bmw.
I love the e34 I bout a 540i and that’s the only one I drive
I like how you guys bring back some of the previous builds. Keep up the great work!
Definitely enjoying the BMW content and revisiting past project cars to keep them running. Sounds like it needs a blower motor resistor next. I don't have the time or use case for a steering box equipped BMW, but living vicariously through your build is a lot of fun!
A couple tips on the HVAC system. The fan speeds are controlled by a resistor that commonly fails. It's very easy to replace. The AC may be blowing hot due to the the electrically actuated blend valve being stuck. That's also a very easy fix (or at least it was on my '95 540i).

The Steve Dinan episodes of the smoking tire podcasts are absolutely INCREDIBLE! I highly recommend every single one of them.

Poor Pete and his BMW addiction. Someone stage an intervention for this man!
If a BMW is a crippling cigarette addiction, then what would be an appropriate nicotine patch for Pete? A Merc AMG?
He's alright, Pete's addiction level is only 5/10 compared to M539 Restorations lol. 😂
@@SilverScarletSpider as some who aligns with Pete, AMG will not scratch the itch.
But hey, they’ll never run out of content!
It's nice to see builds come back. Nothing is ever 100% done. Keep up the good work! Excited for the future builds like the RX-7 and S15.
I love the updates on the older builds. As a BMW owner (x2) the new problems and deep breaths are part of the adventure. Pete's love/frustration of the bimmer is so accurate. Great stuff, Gents!
love seeing this car back i think all your cars are worthy and im sure other people wouldnt mind them coming back
Love seeing performance channels being responsible by adding cat back on to a car with a straight exhaust. Thanks for giving us responsible performance.
Really appreciate both the follow up on previously completed builds, and the E34 M5 content as a whole. The first episode was a great resource for me as I also own one of these cars. A lot of the old forum info is long gone and detailed video like yours about servicing the intake system is invaluable.
Watching this and listening to you two driving it gives me all the feels of my own E34 M5. By far the most fun hobby car I’ve had. And a sweet daily. Sold it and still regret it. Great content all around !
I love these Saturday morning episodes, it's like Saturday cartoons
The silver works so well for this car, and the wheels are also just spot on. Often times I feel silver cars just disappear, yet this one stands out. Liking this one.
Love these rims. Also love that you guys are doing your own alignments. Thanks for the content.
Those Wheels look perfect for the M5. It is meant to be
Glad you re-waxed the underside… I see so many RUclipsrs just blast… they will regret it in 18 months when it all rusts badly.
Unless you live in the south US lol
@@ChristopherBristol as long as you are long way from the coast and never go there then yes 👍
@@jamest5149 fair point, I'm in Dallas,TX and I've got cars that sit outside all day everyday no rust :)
@@ChristopherBristol yep, have sen cars that have sat in the desert, all there oaint blasted off with the sun and sand but still solid 👍
I think I rewatched 24:17 six times 😂
Peak BMW ownership moments
I love seeing the cars over again and progress!
So the fan speed control not working on 1-3 is a resistor pack that put a different resistors for the lower speeds and does without a resistor for the 4 speed. Just change the resistor pack in the firewall near the middle if i remwmber correctly. Should be a fairly quick job

She deserves a Blaupunkt Bremen SQR 46 DAB, I put one in my E34 M5 and it matches perfectly, looks like the original and has a super solid bluetooth connection. You can also dial the backlight color in to match exactly!
Plan is to get a blaupunkt eventually. They are the perfect match for that era car
Really disappointed you didn’t start the car and rev it with the pipes cut.
Thats like a right of passage.
Another short but sweet video series. I'm happy to see you guy bringing back classic driver's cars to factory/oem. Props for the wheel choice I'd stick with those over the previous models. If it were me after that awesome engine compartment clean I'd do something with that coolant overflow tank. Oh... and thanks for bringing this rebuild series to us!
at the expense of his sanity and financial wellbeing, Pete is living our dream. love it
The new wheels are awesome. The car is starting to look like it should. Amazing! Thanks for rescuing another one from the crusher!
love the attention to detail Pete! Really enjoy seeing the evolution of a build over time and not just 1 and done. Great stuff Speed Academy
Pete:r "the trim was 300$ per side, expennsive stuff!"
Me: *thinks back to the XJ Cherokee I had with that 1300$ window trim*
Love the E34 and E39 you have are a true man of culture.
About that AC problem, make sure that the cabin filter and housing are clean especially the space below the filter, the AC is OK but certainly not Desert capabable.
The throwing star wheels are the nicest on these M5’s in my opinion… these would make good winter wheels
The other ones were not bad looking either surely keep them for latter as a full set of spares..
Love to see updates on "old" builds. It's more realistic than continuos new car/new build. Love the E34!
Excellent series. Love the E34. I find the steering to have a lot of play on center but was told it’s normal for these cars with steering box. Would be interested to her your thoughts. Keep up the good work!
Yes they are sloppy. I just tightened the adjustment screw and it made quick a nice difference
Started watching your channel from the Mod My Car series. Quick builds. So definitely enjoy 2-3 episode reclamation projects. Keep mixing them in with the other awesome builds!
Throwing stars are still the best for this era IMO. Car looks amazing Pete!
It is always great to see you working on old BMWs. There is so much to do😉.
Please more of those...
If you decide to install factory catalytic converters in the future you can reach out. I have a set sitting for years when i had upgraded my entire exhaust on my M5. Condition is fair but I’d donate them to you guys !
The only bmw I ever owned was a 1994 M5 with the 3.8. What a glorious engine and what I think is one of the best looking sedans ever.
I like seeing you all succeed on your builds.
I wonder what'll be next?
I enjoy these videos. It gives a realistic approach to buying these cars, as they require constant maintenance.
Love this car. Simple, fun, clean and nostalgic. Great episode!

Just needs the amber corner lights now.
Excellent video and series, great work with the content, keeping a car running is what real world car ownership is all about, especially if you want to keep it for a long time. Appreciate the effort, cheers.
Sreten would be proud
Is the coolant reservoir still available? Would definitely clean up the engine compartment with a new one
They are (or were) I bought one a few years ago when I still had my E34 M5.
THANK YOU FOR NOT FORGETTING ABOUT THIS CAR
Love this e34 M5 content! God I miss mine, same color as yours Pete, I wish I would of never sold it 😢
Same here. Sold mine about 4 years ago. Sad day😢
This is a nice M5, we need more BMW content!
Like the new wheels, but the throwing stars are the ones this car deserves.
Definitely a good call on the headlights. The car is a beaut!!!!
Both looking good but hey he is the owner to decide which one to keep on the car and which to keep as spare.. ;0)
E34 is one of my favorite cars of all time. Hope you keep at it.
Reminds me of the BMW 750IL used in the 007 movie: Tomorrow Never Dies. 90s-00s era cars were the best! BMW has the best wheel designs. Amazing build as every single car in this garage. 👌🏻👍🏻👏🏻
Pretty sure the final stage resistor is the culprit for your blower issue. The engine bay looks magnificent but for the final touch you should replace the paint code sticker.
i didn't even know the old headlights weren't OEM, nice to see this wrapped up and running well! always liked the old M5, but never ridden/driven
So glad you guys are doing BMW content, God knows we need all the help we can get! 😂😂
Maybe it’s just me but I prefer the darker headlights tbh. If I buy this car from you, I’ll buy the headlights too and install them myself.

Love the BMW content. Keep bringing them back and mixing in with the new builds. Of course, as a huge BMW and Honda/Acura fan, I may be a bit biased with my opinion…
Those wheels are awesome! They are so clean, and say performance and custom in a very understated yet classy way.
Love the M Parallel wheels. I have two sets for my Bimmer and I feel that they are one of the best style of wheels BMW has made. I feel though that the M-System/Turbine/Throwing stars fit the E34 M5 body style better in this case. Can't go wrong with either though
Love this!!! Extra OEM would orange repeaters do. Greetings from Stockholm Sweden.
Lol! Dave is the funniest guy I swear. "On the next episode of bmw academy" 🤣🤣🤣 that killed me
Definitely, bring more content based on the performance vehicles of yesteryear
Keep the smoked lights, they looked better. Nice oem+

I love my Titanium Silver over Napa Black leather E46 M3, and every time I see this car, I feel a longing to obtain the big brother. Great content and thanks for keeping this car in the rotation.
Guys the car looks perfect 😍. Love the OE wheels.
Always good to see old cars getting some TLC
Pete running to the back of his bimmer to smell exhaust fumes made for some pull my finger jokes. Great to follow along as always though, and as others said, it is cool that you go back to previous builds.
Wheels and tires on point.. 👌 Nice project build to see the M5 returned to premium running condition. Until something else goes wrong...
I love M Parallels they look great on almost any bmw. I believe that shift knob is known as the ZHP e46 knob.
The fan problem will be the fan resistor under the dash. They're worth checking even if they work properly as leaves can clog up around it and it can be a massive fire risk. I ended up replacing mine in my 525i as it wad badly corroded.
Love this car. Looks best with throwing stars
How exactly do cats that far back from the headers immediately make a difference to the smell on start up? Being so far away won’t those things take a long time to heat up and be functional ?
Thats the same spot the factory cats are in so it lights them up pretty quickly
Didn’t see a problem with the headlights you had in before but those new headlights they do look good maybe even better
Can't wait for you to fix the car phone in the next episode! Also this is one of those cars for me that I don't get tired of ever since I saw it in that amazing car chase scene in Ronin.
Im pretty sure the blower fan resistor is blown as the fan will still work on full blast but not on lower speeds......theyre a bit of a fire risk!!!.......love this car and wouldnt wanna see it go up in flames!!
PT - that sealant you put upstream on the exhaust could damage your new cats - a metal gasket would be the way to go. Love the channel and superb content 🙂
This one is like a 3/4 scale M740i. Well done. Sounds great!
M Pars are the BEST wheel Bmw has ever made. Looks perfect!!!
HONEYSEAL FTW. They did my truck and it was amazing!
Beautiful. This is what every M5 deserves
Back in the day, this was my dream car….
Hell yes! I have style 37 on my E39 530i Touring and I love them. You can't go wrong with style 37 :)
Love a short series like this one. Maybe we could've gotten 3 episodes to actually "perfect" the car. But yeah, seeing cars come back and get a few easy mods here and there that improve the driving experience. These mods are also way more relatable for us, so there's that appeal.
I like the understated “BMW refresh” that costs $7500. 😂
The BMW is looking good. Pete doesn't know how powerful those finger snaps are. When he snapped his finger to change the lights it also changed his shirt. Dave might need to ease up on the BMW ribbing, because who knows what Pete might do with those snap powers. 🙂
As an e34 msport owner, I have to say that interior is very special
I've been calling those the Gesi's, magic work tbh. Once they're CARB compliant it'll be a game changer.
Dave, what kind of sunglasses are you wearing? Would you mind sharing the brand and model #.
Thanks
Yo @speed academy, what sunglasses do you have on during the driving impression?
Dave’s sarcasm is the best 😂
Love your content…enjoyed tagging along for the M’s revival…really enjoy the build series stuff…would be nice to see updates on the projects as you add mileage to them. I understand BMWs are your jam Pete but would be nice to see other makes featured a little more prominently. Ie: what can you do with a C5/C6 or other America performance daily driver?
I like seeing you guys maint these cars
Oem plus with the wheels on. Love the co ntent.
Loved the update and redo video’s. Great choice!
I like the wheels before this set you put on. Looks a little different
The fan only running on 4 is a resistor board has to be replaced to get the other speeds back, at least that's how it is on the e30.
I had the same ZHP shift knob. I switched over to the taller variant and never looked back.
looks great. right choice to switch to oe headlights.
bring back the orange blinkers ;)

Fluid films the tie rods, then strips it right off. 🤣
@Ted Cantlon oh sure, doesn't make it not funny though.
My man is now The Transporter. Just needs a suit
