WOW! YAY! Congratulation Luke! If you baby it to an actual harvest you'll need to save nearly every seed possible so you can reintroduce the old heirloom variety back into the world! Let's hope for the best!
All I can say is WOW!!!. An extinct tomato has been revived! you have the only living specimen known just amazing, best of luck to this little plant and to your hard work.
I know you probably won't see this because I'm just now watching these videos 3 years after the fact, but i just could not stop smiling for the entire video. My garden is full of sprouts thanks in part to the knowledge I've gained from your channel. The joy you take in growing things and your excitement at bringing back a potentially extinct variety is contagious. The world is so full of negativity now and it seems so many people are only interested in tearing each other down, yet you provide a bright spot of hope. I've loved seeing your daughter grow as well... my daughter is about the same age. I respect you and wish you good health and fortune in all your endeavors.
I'd like to make a few suggestions if I may. To ensure the survival of this tomato variety, your focus should be on propagation. After you successfully propagate this plant, you should send them(edit: rooted cuttings) to as many people around the world as possible. This will ensure that any local diseases you may have are not an issue. You should encourage the maximum vegetative growth from this plant, thereby increasing the number of potential cuttings/suckers you can take, and send to as many different people in as many different places as you possibly can. Once the mother plant gets a virus, all cuttings taken from this plant will have the virus too. So send out your first cutting/sucker as early as you possibly can. Don't wait and send them out all at once, because every day you wait is an unneccesary risk.
Another thing to mention is, when you send out the cuttings, encourage as many people as possible to propagate and distribute the cuttings themselves. Remember, the only way to keep this variety alive is through healthy, virus free cuttings. Seeds will be forever an impossibility.
You can't really send the cuttings unless you root them first. Secondly, he could use those cuttings to make more plants for himself and increase his chances of success. Thirdly, this is likely a heirloom variety so if you collect seeds from all of the plants that you are able to produce, even though they are identical genetically, the seeds won't be so you're not necessarily in trouble with the gene pool. You can just save seeds from multiple plants sprouted from seeds in the next season.
Food Forest if you save seeds from a hybrid tomato variety, the genetics are not identical to the parent plant. there is absolutely no way to save seed from MIgardeners plant.
Food Forest If he hoards all his cuttings, he increases the risk of disease wiping them all out. Tomato viruses should be of great concern. (especially an 87 year old variety that has zero resistance to today's tomato illnesses)
I love the way you’ve been going through this and that you are so open about the whole process. I can’t imagine how exciting this must have been for you and Sindy! As for those folks who left because they thought you were leading them on - you know, you put yourself out there and make yourself vulnerable and there will be folks who criticize you but you know and we know you’re honest & sincere. It’s amazing you were able to bring them to fruition.
Good luck guys! The oldest tomato seeds my grandfather ever sprouted were about 20 years old, kept in the attic of their small countryside house. I'm watching the story of this tomato closely. Have a good season!
I had read an academic article that said that soaking seeds in sugar water actually had the effect of decreasing the germination rate in multiple tests. I believe I linked it to the first video you made about this. I, personally, would have thought that providing beneficial organisms and not keeping it sterile would have helped it but I'm really glad you got it to grow either way and I'm super excited to see how it turns out.
Yea, this video is from 2016, and its now 2023 (6 yrs later), but I'm still Wowed by your accomplishments! I wish there were a way to connect this video to an update on what happened to this instinct variety that you revived. It was fun to see the excitement from you, Luke as you shared this with your followers. I share that excitement when I have successfully germinated & sprouted my seeds, as I'm still not very confident in that vs just doing the easy by buying veggie plants to plop into the garden. I soooo enjoyed your success MiGardener!! God's blessings!
This is so exciting!! It is unfortunate that people unsubscribed. I mean you had done an update already and plants take time to grow. You can update every day. Some people just love having a reason to complain even when there isn't one. So happy it i growing for you. I am sure when it comes time you will be harvesting the seeds lol
Well, I am a new subscriber and I am totally excited. I am so hopeful he will have produced by this time enough of this tomato seed that I can buy some and further expand what was once lost but is now a viable growing resurrection tomato! I would love to get some of the ancient egyption grains that were found in the pyramids and grown but I am sure the universities are not going to let those go out yet.
@@timturk1899: No. Everytime I finally get a notice of seeds for sale, those seeds are "sold out". Beginning to have my doubts about the authenticity of this alleged resurrected tomato.
So psyched that you recovered a lost variety. I sure hope you'll offer seed from the fruit so you're followers can spread the love. I'm a strictly heirloom variety grower and I'm sure this qualifies. Congrats again and I look forward to seeing more.
The garden gods have spoken!! Patience is a virtue my friend, great job thats exciting. All you need is one sprout and youre golden. It will be amazing when that one sprout allows you to sell its seed to many others who can treat themselves by growing an original variety of tomato. Keep up the good work!!!
This is why I started following the channel... That's wicked exciting. Thank you for sharing. I've been through a ton of your content in the meantime and love it all and can't wait till I have a yard again to put to good use.
If it were me I wouldn't be able to speak properly either lol. Its sooo cool! U could be responsible for bringing back that tomato from extinction!!! History in the growing.
One major hurdle has passed. Once it has gotten past the epigeous stage, the most essential thing now is LOTS of light. It's main source of energy is photosynthesis through the cotyledons. Your next major hurdle will be damping off. BTW, what kind of mix is that? It looks a little bit too compacted to me and way too wet, but just might be my old eyes :-) Looking forward to updates.
Yay!! My favorite part of watching plants through their life cycle is the first emergence and then their first true leaves! I can't imagine your excitement for this special seed!
That is awesome! I've really been hoping they'd work out. Every time you'd post a video about your indoor bed I'd pause as you'd pan by the red cups and squint as hard as I could to see what was happening. So glad you finally got a sprout out of the tomatoes.
I've enjoyed this sprouting journey because my Mom is 87. Can you believe these seeds were from the time she was born?? Great news! Do you know the kind of tomato it is?
Susan Robinson , in a previous video he said its Giant Crimson Tomato. Go back and watch that one, he talks about how he found the seeds and opened the packets... :)
I believe he also said that variety is no longer around. I'm curious how nice the tomatoes will get. Once it gets big enough, you should clone more plants off your cuttings to ensure the survival of that plant.
congrats !!! you´ve reached stage 2 !!! don´t give up ! stage 3 (leaves development) is just around the corner , pay no attention to negative people, if they are sooooo mad about what you do and what you don´t , WHY THEY DONT TRY IT THEMSELVES ??? hopefully the tomato will reach the next stages, but even if it doesn´t , it´s OK !! you have given us a great show !! thanks Luke
I am sorry? I didn't know I signed a contract to update weekly. I don't just want to film empty cups for 8 videos. If they would not have ever sprouted I would have shown that too. Nothing to hide behind here.
Not being able to delay gratification is indicative of a personality disorder. Is there any progress with the tomato? I never thought I'd get this invested in a tomato plant but your enthusiasm is really infectious and the idea of reviving an extinct species is thrilling- like a Jurassic Park movie, only with plants that don't try to kill you.

Don't apologize for how things work. You can't change that.
You should rename the variety... The 87 or The Old 87. Ha!
hope they make fruit.
Heinz 87 lol

Is there any progress with the tomato? I never thought I'd get this invested in a tomato plant but your enthusiasm is really infectious and the idea of reviving an extinct species is thrilling- like a Jurassic Park movie, only with plants that don't try to kill you.
I really wanted some seeds of those looks interesting to taste almost 100 year old tomatoes it takes you back in time
