"that's a freaking sprout!" You crack me up. I have never seen anyone so excited before about a seed. But, you know? I'm just as happy as you are! I can hardly wait to watch the remaining videos in this series. Since this is three years ago, I can hardly wait to see the outcome. Thanks.
Dude...look closer... more are about to sprout from the tomato...I see one with a tiny peak of a sprout. Congratulations Luke...so excited for you buddy!!!! yay!!!!!!!!!!!!. Now don't you let Monsato get a hold of it boy!.
So after finding out about this a few days ago, I had to see where it all began. Wow!! To think that it started from a little root peeking out, and now today with a whole bunch of good folks getting ready to try it out in their own gardens next spring...this is just amazing!!
You are a nice kid and all, but putting them in a closed container caused the mold, the seeds themselves were not sterile, they had dried mold spores on them, the sugar water and closed environment made a perfect 'Mold Farm'. To prevent mold make sure you have some air flow, unknown if they were viable as the mold would have killed most of them. I would have sent some on to the Seed Saver bank just incase you messed them up (ie, they would not have made a 'Mold Farm'). Also, disposable gloves are Cheap at the Pharmacy, you will always have some amount of oils on your hands even if you just washed them. Who knows how many would have survived if handled correctly.
not really, @@jenniferponzini2433 . He only grew one plant from the whole package and he could have grown out dozens, so that he could have saved seed to get the variety going again. You can see on his website they haven't got this variety for sale. But to me the worst part is they keep this video up which many people perceive as a valid instruction for how to sprout old seeds, which may have lead to others following these instructions and lost additional rare seed varieties. It has quite a lot of views.
The lettuce wouldn't have sprouted. Books and articles done by experienced, professional gardeners would have told him that lettuce seed doesn't sprout. You need to buy new every year or two or save your own seed. I really wish he had grown only a part of the seeds, maybe 1/4 instead of dumping so many seeds in. I feel really bad about the tomatoes.
Huh? Don’t believe everything you read. No clue about 87 years, but 15 year old lettuce seed is fine. Sprouts in just dirt. Unlike him, I just spread enough seeds for the pot I want to use, so it takes me a long time to use a whole packet, since I also grow other mixes and collect seeds. But still have the old seeds and will grow another pot next time I set up my salad pots. Also accidently dropped one packet into the grass. It looks like it might have gotten damp, but hey, they will still get a chance since the packet is still intact.
Happy about the tomatoes and radishes!!!! Bummer about the others. I hope you didn't throw away the beet seeds. Need to pick out the ones with no mold and put them in another container! Keep trying! They might not be done!
Rob Backyard Gardenerr Or baking soda water, from a spray bottle. 1 tbsp baking soda in about two cups of water, or just fill that spray bottle with enough water. I would put those seeds in a large box with a growing medium, and cover lightly with said growing medium. Keep moist, with that spray bottle always. Some seeds take their sweet time. Don't give up, try more then one way of doing things, always. Sunshine kills molds, ventilation helps too. Sugar promotes the growth of molds. These seeds are like micro premature babies, lots of tender care needed.
Next time try in different methods of sprouting like just plain soil, ive never had any luck with the high humidity paper towel thing always the same everything gets rotten. Good luck man
In the paper towel method, you need to make sure to not make the container too wet, it must be only damp. I make sure this happens by either spilling out excess water or just using a spray(one or two sprays is enough).
Interesting. It always worked for me. Thats how i grow almost every plant of mine. Dont make the towel super wet. Only get a dpray bottle and make it half wet. Not dry but not dripping. Fold it, put it in ziplock, label. Profit.
I LOVE your excitement and enthusiasm. I get so excited with my garden. No matter how many times I see something sprout, or flower, or a new piece of fruit or veggie I get so excited. It never loses its magic for me. I watch you just as much for that enthusiasm and clear love for what you are doing as I do for technical tips and advice. Thank you for sharing that love and excitement with us.
Houston, we have sproutage!!! WOO HOO!!!!!!! (We are spastic dorks for being this excited!!!! SO AWESOME!!!) (edited to say that I subscribed just to get an update on this 80 year old seed project. You guys have brightened my day.)
Super cool video! I just sent a friend a picture of a sprout from a seed that's NOT 87 years old. Lol. Also, Geneva is the cutest baby ever. As you can tell, I'm late to the garden party. Thanks so much taking us along on this experiment. I follow Jess at Roots and Refuge and she mentioned this. Now I know what she was talking about!
This is by far my favorite video of yours. And maybe one of my favorite videos on RUclips. Way to go!! This is awesome!! Props to Next Level Gardening for giving you the shout out of this video and seeds.
OMG...that is awesome for you! I can't wait to see the progress of these little gems. Looks like a few more of those tomato seeds are ready to pop too. Good luck.
I love her first reaction, you hit 100,000 subscribers? I see that you are so close you will definitely make it, only a matter of time. Congrats on getting seeds to sprout, lets hope they have enough in them to thrive.
Pretty sure he said that pack contained hybrids not heirloom. Few, if any of the F2 generation will be desirable plants. That's why he said they don't exist anymore. The mom and dad (and subsequent breeders cuttings thereof) are long gone. Wouldn't mind having a cutting though lol.
I've been watching a lot of vids on seed starting and a couple people that I saw used a 16oz. bottle of water and mixed in a cap of hydrogen peroxide then used that to dampen the paper towel. It's supposed to stop mold growth. Haven't tried yet but have all my supplies gathered and plan to start in the next few days. Congrats on that tomato. Hope you get many more.
you're good at this Luke. You have magic in your hands.God blessed you with this.My family is very lucky to accidentally stop by your channel. This year is the first time we ordered seeds and trifecta. Each seed is sprouting and can't wait to get into the garden in March here in zone 7.
You have to help me. My great Aunt Ora collected and saved these seeds in 1918. Sealed cases wrapped in bag paper, kept in a chest in my dad's house. Some are garden seeds, there's a detailed growth record of the plants with locations in a botanical book she kept. I would love to restore some real native Prarie here.
Glad to see some are sprouting, I wouldn't give up on the seeds that didn't show any progress. You might try a few other methods on small batches of the dormant seeds. I have found several procedures others have used. Probably very few tried on 87 year old seeds. Good Luck
I find your excitement contagious! Congrats on the tomatoes and radishes. If it ever gets to it, I'd love some seeds. I can almost imagine the taste of those tomatoes! Probably unlike anything I've tasted in my lifetime, or will be able to taste if I don't get some of those seeds!
Hehe :D. I have grown 20 year old tomato seeds with good success. I'm sure you'll get a few (I swear I see 3 there) but be patient as they can take longer than usual and be quite erratic. I've had some I thought goners show up as sprouts 3 months later. The real challenge is growing them out to maturity. Good luck and keep up up to date :)
I hope you grow these for a few years before making the seeds available. Just to make sure you can keep this variety going! Hope to see an update soon!
salicylic acid {Aspirin} can be used to increase germination rate and act as an antibacterial. Take care Luke, love this series of Videos, hope the Tomato's sprout.
Kelly Richardson isn't salicylic acid what's found in acne medicine? I thought aspirin was acetylated salicylic acid (acetylsalicylic acid)? Ive heard of aspirin being put in water for flowers to keep them fresh longer so that makes sense. Probably breaks down back to salicylic acid pretty easily for the plants to absorb. I've read that salicylic acid is used as a plant hormone so probably so. It would be likely be better to use it in pure form which can be found in acne medicines and even some wart remover products (usually around 17% Salicylic acid) . I'd be curious to know for the acne wipes, if it would be possible to use them as a medium to germinate seeds on. That would pretty interesting if so. Or, if putting wart remover on a seed would help/work... That just sounds like a bad idea but who knows...
I've been following you for a while and just stumbled on these videos... you're a HUGE dork!...and I love it!!! Idk how it all turns out, but... thanks for sharing, absolutely loving it!
I LOVE your channel. My husband and I watch it regularly, and it is inspiring and educational. I notice you often rock while you are monologue-ing, and it makes me dizzy. We still love the show, and are stoked to see the seeds grow!!
Just watched, it physically hurt to watch you dump all of the seeds in one experiment. Ugh, lost potential I feel like, but I'm glad you did get a few sprouts.
This is so exciting! Wow. When I think of all the seeds I have tossed because they were outdated, such a waste. Never again!. Will you be selling those tomato seeds once you establish your plants? If so, do you plan to sell some of the seeds? If you are, I would be honored if you could reserve a few for me to buy? This is just wonderful. Your excitement is contagious!
Your excitement is totally infectous! Ok, so I am going to skip on over to the next one to see how the sprout is doing. This is indeed very exciting to bring back a lost heirloom. Awesome! Ne thinks I am going to have to start seeking out old seed stocks too.
Luke - super exciting about the tomato seeds!!! I want some of those seeds from the tomatoes if you energetic a harvest from them! Also, perhaps try a little hydrogen peroxide water on the beet seeds to kill the mold and buy another week to get some sprouts...

LOL I watched your newest video showing the progress of the tomato plant first, but I'm still just as excited as you are now from the sprouts! Haha :-)
if you can bring back that variety of tomato, not seen in almost 90 years, man what a find! and what an accomplishment! if you get it to grow, I would save every tomato and do nothing but save the seeds. Absolutely fantastic!
I feel so very privileged to be able to enjoy this very special journey with you !!! What an adventure !! I have goosebumps, waiting to see if this results in live plants !!! I am typing this before watching this video.

throw the beets in a pot and they'll sprout. same with some of the lettuce. they hate being in really warm temps. most gardeners are aware that lettuce seeds hate heat = heater vents. let me know when the tomatoes are done. I'd like some seeds. good job on the rest.
HAPPY VALENTINE. I think each of us waited a week or so for this episode. I am commenting while you are calling Cindy. I think you are going to have at least 3 more tomato sprouts on next to the one sprouted.
I would plant those unsprouted seeds. Some are just slow. We have had seeds sprout and grow a year after we have planted them.
I would have too.
I was thinking same thing plant em anyway
Yeah, some came up after he took the pots with soil in home.
Really?!! Wow!!! That’s amazing!’
I would still try sticking the mouldy weds in a pot of soil! Sometimes the soil can trick them into germinating, even if you think al is lost!
"that's a freaking sprout!" You crack me up. I have never seen anyone so excited before about a seed. But, you know? I'm just as happy as you are! I can hardly wait to watch the remaining videos in this series. Since this is three years ago, I can hardly wait to see the outcome. Thanks.

I bought a pack last fall and now have 4 of the 5 seeds germinated and growing nicely.
I guess this proves the expiration dates on seed packets don't mean diddly squat. I always buy seeds end of season when they're 75%off
Same

this is so true and it made me sad that he put the whole packages into one experiment
Agreed. there were a few times I cringed watching this whole series but at the end, he managed to save the day. So kudos to him.

I love how the first thing you want to do is call your wife! Very excited for you 3!! 😃 Happy Valentine's Day!
Your enthusiasm is infectious! Congratulations on your sprouts.
Happy about the tomatoes and radishes!!!! Bummer about the others. I hope you didn't throw away the beet seeds. Need to pick out the ones with no mold and put them in another container! Keep trying! They might not be done!
shashakeeleh I agree. You can even try to spritz them with a light hydrogen peroxide solution.

Your excitement validates my joy for gardening.
I know nothing about plants but it's so entertaining to see someone so enthused about seeds

@@schleig04 by killing off bad bacteria before they damage your seedlings.
You've made history from history. Good going. Looking forward to purchasing some of these when they become available.
Watching your reaction to the sprouts is pretty much the best thing ever. LOL!
Good work, to try the hard to sprout ones, you could put them in the freezer a few days before sprouting.
Your enthusiasm is so infectious.. I was merely searching for how to use h2o2 in germination, and i found this GEM of a channel... I like it!
I've been following you for a while and just stumbled on these videos... you're a HUGE dork!...and I love it!!!
Idk how it all turns out, but... thanks for sharing, absolutely loving it!
I'm the same! Just smiling like crazy about the tomato seeds! And there are several more that are starting to open also!!!
I wish the series was in order.
don't let the tomato plant die I would like a pack of seeds one day
Yes yes yes yes... bring back the old school veggies..

This video brought me so much joy...So happy for you (and us)...it can be done.
I would've never imagined I would be sooo excited to see a seed sprout! This is sooo awsome! #congrats
If you get these tomatoes to grow I am SUPER interested in seeds you collect this summer. I will pay up to a nearly absurd price for a formerly extinct tomato.
Dude... grow as many of those tomatoes as you can, save the seeds and send them to the seed bank, Keep saving those seeds :)

I believe they are called brow line glasses.
Call Guiness! Congratulations!
LUKE this is such a victory! Great work getting those oldies to sprout, it is phenomenal news! :D
So exciting that the seeds some of them are viable. Can't wait to see the tomato seeds grow Luke, Good Luck with them!

I am less concerned about price and more about genetics. This doesn't happen often.
MIgardener | Simple Organic Gardening & Sustainable Living do you know where I can get old seeds
Regardless of price. I want some seeds DX
Will you have seed packs available for this tomato though? Forgive me if you answered this, but I would like some too if you do. I didn't see any on your site yet.
share the seeds around please!
your engergy is awesome you have me pumped for these seeds. when you successfully harvest seeds i would love some.
Even seven years later your excitement about the sprouting tomato seed made my day. :)
That is sooo amazing, Congratulations...... I hope and pray that it turns into a wonderful plant. I would love to buy those seeds! Toodles Y'all
good luck on the tomatoes , hope they grow and you can keep the seeds
I don't want to touch it with my hands .... touches it with a big 'ol screwdriver :D haha
I'm so excited to watch ya again this year, I made my garden bigger last year and busted my ass ripping out a bunch of weedy shrubs and made a nice strip of black Iowa awesomeness to plant in this year! Thank you for every passionate video you make, it's infectious bro..:)
So exciting seeing your reaction!!
Hey from my experience leaving the top on while germinating can cause mildew and mold
This is as fun as Christmas morning lol! Congrats! Can't wait to see the progression of these seeds!!
So funny but exciting. Luke is Superman. 87 year old seed grower and super Dad watch. Way to go.
it's adorable to see someone just gush about their passions
Babies are awesome! Cutest thing ever man! Congrats.
How exciting! Looking forward to updates!
Good job buddy! best of luck keeping them healthy! can't wait to see those tomatoes in the seed store!
The enthusiasm is wonderful.
I saw the little sprout before you did, I was pointing to my computer screen and saying there it is, there it is!
LOL I watched your newest video showing the progress of the tomato plant first, but I'm still just as excited as you are now from the sprouts! Haha :-)
Awesome, what else can you say! Alright Luke no pressure now! Make those babies GROW !
Yes! This is the best video ever! we all want seeds of anything you get to grow!
if you can bring back that variety of tomato, not seen in almost 90 years, man what a find! and what an accomplishment! if you get it to grow, I would save every tomato and do nothing but save the seeds. Absolutely fantastic!
Love these updates on the old seeds! Can't wait to see how the tomato goes!
I feel so very privileged to be able to enjoy this very special journey with you !!! What an adventure !! I have goosebumps, waiting to see if this results in live plants !!! I am typing this before watching this video.
That is wild! Too cool. Can't wait to see where this goes.
I'm late discovering this but I've been doing this for years just not THIS OLD WOW! This is archeology gardening! Id love to get some of those tomato seeds; if you got a plant or two out of it. Your enthusiasm make me so happy and motivated !!
HAPPY VALENTINE.
I think each of us waited a week or so for this episode.
I am commenting while you are calling Cindy. I think you are going to have at least 3 more tomato sprouts on next to the one sprouted.
Gosh, I am almost as excited as you are. Way top go.
I'm so happy and excited for you. You know I love tomatoes so I'm sending prayers your way. 🍅❤
