In my opinion 'React goes with spontenity and presence of mind and 'Respond is a delayed reaction minus the impulsiveness. The take away from this narrative is that Dont allow the situation to take control of you by reacting but adopting a right attitude (Respond) to happenigs or situation around you ensures peace and happiness to you. Two thought provoking concepts React and Respond applied to life situation in an appropriate way. Congrats Vasu,Great effort !
Many takeaways : Not reacting impulsively responding thoughtfully and with the right attitude , build the inner world for a *HAPPY LIFE* 🎉. . Need to consciously work on these. 😊
One of your excellent episodes, Vasu. It makes sense to respond rather than react, sometime kneejerk! Cockroach story was very apt. As for reaction, it has to be measured and only if reactioñ was expected. But thoughtful response will be meaningful and unlikely to lead to complicstions, unlike a hasty reaction. Excellent thoughts on the two R's.
Well presented Vasu. This one small change in our behaviour will ensure that the world has more of mature, calmer and understanding individuals. Need of the hour in these volatile, uncertain and ambiguous times.
True...but sometimes appearing to react emotionally upset and angry is required so that people don't start taking you for granted .. and give preference to those who are relatively emotionally more uptight... What is the difference you mean by joy and happiness in your first statement? and is not reacting emotionally considered to be coming from the heart, Vs responding with thought, being mindful, and using your logic considered to be coming from the brain, that this video is recommending... does that not go against the title of the book...on heart (clever) vs brain( stupid)?
Great points. Let me respond to each one. I agree, sometimes it may be necessary to act upset or angry to drive home a point. But then, when you do this, you aren't reacting, but actually responding! The problem occurs when someone's behaviour or a situation impacts you emotionally and then you react. There is only a subtle difference between joy and happiness. Joy is of the soul. It's the inner feeling. Happiness is of the moment. It's more of the outer expression. The title of the book has to be understood in the right context. "Stupid" shouldn't be interpreted literally. The heart and the brain have very different tasks to perform. I have covered this elaborately in my book. One needs to learn how to leverage each effectively. Every feeling or emotion emanates from the heart. When faced with an adverse situation, one has two choices - to react or to respond. When you react you give away your power but when you respond you are in control. How to respond, is the job of the brain once you decide that you will not let anything external impact your happiness and peace. I hope I have answered you to your satisfaction 😊
Good take away from this episode. Reaction is spontaneous. It is a human nature. Responding to a situation instead of reacting leads to control of the situation. This comes with matured thought and constant practice.
My learning is that when we REACT we are giving away our power to the situation whereas when we RESPOND we are staying in control of the situation!
Great perspective Tina. What you have written is 100% correct! I missed this important perspective
