    What’s the Memoirs of a Geisha movie about?
    In 1929, a young girl from a poor fishing village in Japan, Chiyo (Suzuka Ohgo), and her sister Satsu (Samantha Futerman) are sold by their father to the owner of a geisha house. They are quickly separated and Chiyo finds herself confronted with the strictness of the housekeeper and the harshness of the life of an apprentice geisha. She also has to face the jealousy-ridden hostility of Hatsumomo (Gong Li), the star geisha of the house, who succeeds in relegating her to the status of a simple servant. Chiyo has lost all hope when she is suddenly seduced by the kindness of a man (Ken Watanabe), chairman of an electricity company, with whom she falls in love. She then decides to do everything she can to deserve his attention. Another geisha, Mameha (Michelle Yeho), takes her under her wing and begins to teach her the rudiments of the trade by becoming her "big sister". Thanks to Mameha and helped by her determination, she soon becomes, under the name Sayuri (Zhang Ziyi), a famous and admired geisha throughout Hanamachi. But success does not bring her closer to the one she secretly loves because a geisha no longer has the right to love. Moreover, Nobu (Kōji Yakusho), the president's close friend, is interested in Sayuri and interposes himself between them. It will take the Japanese rout of World War II and the end of age-old traditions for Sayuri and the president to finally be together.

    Even though its not an accurate portrayal of Japanese dance, and is actually taken from Chinese folklore, this is still arguably one of the most beautiful scenes in this film. The dramatic expressions and movement, was done to absolute perfection

      Its not actually of Chinese origin but very much Japanese. Its an adaptation of YUUKI-ONNA, SNOW WOMAN. its story of a high class Oiran who had made plans w her lover to meet at a certain place out in the depths pf thw forest. But alas, she went to the meeting point ro find that he had not come and she dies out there in a blizzard or storm and dies w a vengence. Ever since then her spirit has been lurking in the forest and kills all men that cross her path...

    Was it good? The backbend at the end was skilfully down and sensual, lightning and music A+, but the rest seemed a bit jerky/thrashy? Compared to the fan dances for example.
    I'm happy to have someone point out what I'm missing?

      So you expect a woman lost in a snowstorm to die elegantly? That it?

      I think what is depicted in this scene does not look similar to what a person dying in extreme weather conditions (of any kind) might look like.
      Is that what you were asking?
      My comment was not in reference to the how the subject of the performance was depicted, or conveyed.

    What is a geisha ?

    • @BriarMaeriSibyle
      @BriarMaeriSibyle Год назад +2

      geisha are traditional japanese entertainers who dance, sing, play instruments and serve tea. if in kyoto or the kansai region, they are called geiko, and those who are training to become geiko are called maiko. if in tokyo or the kanto region, they are called geisha, and those who are training to become geisha are called hangyoku, but most people refer to them as geisha and maiko because they don't know the difference. geisha have been around since the 17th century, and are still around today, though it's a dying profession. geisha are most recognizable by their painted white face and red lips, and they're often confused with oiran, who have the similar white face and wear kimono like geisha and have a somewhat similar hairstyle, but oiran were high-ranking courtesans and they no longer exist as geisha do, but instead in reenactments for festivals and theme parks.
