All I’m going to suggest to everyone is read the book. As beautiful as the movie is visually the book is indescribably detailed and haunting
hmm XD idk why but the movie is way better imo. the music, the performance, the costume is breathtaking. the book is really nice but idk it seem kinda slow, and when it got interesting, it skip to the next day somehow...
Agree. The movie is a visual feast, but the book is superior, 'haunting' is the perfect word.
I listened to the book on audible, maybe it was the girl who narrated it but I wouldn't describe it as "haunting"
Read it probably 30x. Both have features I like more than the other.
The book is far better even tho this was a good movie. Books are always better
The Snow Dance is symbolic to Sayuri's trials of becoming a geisha & her life as a whole up to this point. It's cultural and traditional Japanese theatre. The wailing and flailing represents her descent into insanity after waiting for her lover that she knows will never return.
It's actually based on Chinese folklore it's about an empress who caught her husband having an affair with an escort, and she goes mad and she finally collapses and dies.
@@trippyhlut687
Well, I simply put what the people making the movie have said about this scene, as well in the book that this story is based on. Perhaps it had inspiration from there though!
@@whushaw maybe but from what i've heard it's chinese they just switched it to japanese.
@@trippyhlut687 almost everything in Japan originated in china.
geisha concept actually originated from China, all of their instruments that the geisha played also originated from china ( shamisen-sanxian, koto-guzheng, biwa-pipa), the geisha dance inspired by Noh, noh come from china through sangaku. etc . The geisha makeup is actually Tang dynasty china lady makeup and also the geisha hairstyle also resembles the Tang hairstyle, also in the Tang the flower accesory and hair comb is a major trend. also Japanese still use Kanji/hanzi
and now u can't have a chinese played Geisha ( which means artist, not japanese artist, just talented woman), so any east asian can played this role but still preferably Japanese
so yeah this is what written in history book, im sure there are many more that the japanese adopt that aren't mention in the history book, u can't see them in china today because it didn't survive through many invasion, massacre, occupation by mongols, jurchen, manchurian, communist, etc. so Rip
Thank you for this comment
I love the shots of the Chairman. Given that we know his true feelings for Sayuri, he is beyond captivated by this beauty and he has to force himself to continually not pursue her for the sake of his friend.
True
Thats a real bro right there.
Chiyo: eating an icecream
Sayuri: becoming an icecream
It was a sweet ice.
I love how all the men are like:
👁👄👁💧
That was the point.
I saw this movie as a child. I remember nothing about except being stressed out but i remember this scene vividly. I definiately need to rewatch it
same !
dang as a child?? this movie is pretty heavy and has some more adult scenes!
@@rainbowpuppet77 which is why my mom was shocked to know that they actually played this movie in my 9th grade class, many years ago lol
@@rainbowpuppet77 I used to watch it when I was very little too and somehow my parents always let me watch it and it has been my favorite movie ever since. My mom and grandma used to always buy me fans at the flea market because they knew I was in love with that movie and I still am to this day. It even came out when I was born (2005) lol but I never used to go passed the part where the war started, I thought the part from there was boring but now that I'm older I watch the whole movie XD
Meanwhile, I frequently trip on nothing wearing gym shoes.
I felt this comment in my soul 😂
I feel ya!
The way way Mother yelled out for her performance!!! I think it was in that moment she knew indefinitely who she would adopt as her daughter.
I like her and Auntie's reaction
Me trying to sneak into the house late without waking up my parents.
me coming home drunk from the clubs trying to find my way to my room
🤣
😭😭😭
yooooooo i cant stand u for this comment im crying
She was sneaking boogieman style in those geta
it was my favorite and most memorable part of the move, gorgeous
I don't care if it's culturally not accurate, it's beautiful!
She puts a lifetime of melancholy and emotion in one dance, stunning!
This is a very powerful moving scene for many reasons: Sayuri's every action and determination got her the lead over not just Pumpkin but other geisha who had seniority over her, had one heck of a mentor behind her, and now it's go time and she HAS to nail her performance or all of that work WILL be undone. Lo and behold she does although imo i never doubted it.
Damn she must be wearing those moon shoes i heard so much about.
This film dominated in the realm of asthetics
She was sold as a child, worked and waited her whole life for the one she loved so truly, she chose him, he gave her life... then let her go. The hand back leaves her past behind, she steps forward to the unknown ahead. She never stops getting back up.
I get Sayuri's character is supposed to be the GOAT, but I really love Hatsumomo. Without her there would have been no balance..she was the "villain" but one could sympathize with her.
Exactly!! The movie lost its fire after her last scene
@@dauntlessleodragon ok I understand she couldn’t date anyone or whatever bs but the fact she tried to frame the main character as a child knowing the beats she would get, ya no
@@kawaiionee-chan9557 never said she was a sweetheart, I just said that the movie got boring once the villain was gone.
She is so beautiful, she looks like a painting ❄️
As beautiful as this dance is, its not accurately Japanese dance. Japanese dance focuses on being precise and letting the movements speak. The movements aren't over dramatized and there usually isn't much facial expressions. This Snow dance is actually a dance from Chinese folklore. The descent into madness that she transforms into is actually from both a Chinese and Japanese legend. Still, it's very breathtaking regardless and Zhang Ziyi did an excellent job portraying it
For those who search the name of the song, it's Original Music and Arrangement Nagare of Azuma Kabuki Musicians
As beautiful as this dance was, don’t forget the only reason why she is doing this performance: All it was for was for the “highest bidder.”
It's sad that was your takeaway
@@impressivesarasarabrown466 have you read the book? I guess not if you don’t know why she was doing this dance.
@@philip9566 yes I did, and she was quite naive and the art was more of her focus, it was the others around her that were controlling her . In her mind she was performing for the chairman. For him to see her .
I mean, that's just the mating game. We're all playing it (or have played it, for those who are now in relationships) regardless how aware we are. Everyone is trying to score the highest bidder and take home the most valuable prize.
@@impressivesarasarabrown466 You're lying when you say you read the book, or you are a hypocrite telling someone else they're wrong when you just didn't get it. This dance was EXACTLY an advertisement for the men to pay her madam the highest price for her virginity. She was forced to do this dance. It had nothing to do with the chairman. Women in her situation had no choices. Face reality, not Disney versions of it.
The book is much better than the movie, but I honestly do not understand how it got such low rotten tomato scores. 35%, really?
It’s melodramatic
It one 3 Academy awards, so the rotten tomato score seems a little obsolete in my opinion
Because it’s a terrible film with no authenticity
@@CordsZ it’s not the worst film ever made, just flawed
there was a lot of controversy that it was culturally inaccurate and insensitive. i don’t know much about japanese culture but considering the fact that the author was british and most of the cast was chinese i wouldn’t be surprised if it was. however, the movie is aesthetically beautiful with breathtaking costumes.
the shamisens at 2:13 give me so much *L I F E*
I love her in house of flying dagger . Her dancing skills were beautiful in that too.
I think the biggest part that bothers me about this scene (as a Japanese person) is that her hair is down and loose. That sort of look is extremely unconventional as a normal fashion/look. Long, loose hair to the point of being almost messy makes her look like an onyro. It’s a very common design trope to have female ghosts with long, unkempt hair so a lot of Japanese people will have an automatic reaction to it and think it’s extremely creepy.
Shock. Showstopper. Plus, the character she portrays is crazy. With love and betrayal. And kills herself. Or was this her ghost?
The cast and costume designers tried traditional geisha hair styles for the movie. It didn't go well with they planned so the idea was let go.
This movie came out in 2005… why do people keep harping on it still
She deserved an Oscar for this movie
I really like this movie! I love all that fan dancing and gracefulness, the regality. It's just so great to watch!
I miss this movie like Last Samurai back in the day. This scene's beautiful the best of Memoirs of a Geisha.
I watched the movie for the first time last night and was mesmerized by the artistry of this dance scene!! Your upload version of this dance narrative is the best!! Thank you!!
Zhang Ziyi bodies every role she’s in but this one is one of my faves✨💕
Geishas are absolutely beautiful creatures. I'm not dehumanizing the women. I just think they're not of this world. They're actual art.
that was bit of the point
Mameha: To be a geisha is to be judged as a moving work of art.
No words spoken
No words needed
Breath takingly Beautiful
Intoxicatingly entrancing ♡💜❤💜♡
The actress is Chinese not Japanese. Only Japanese actor I know in this movie is Ken Watanabe and he is an amazing actor.
Mother and Pumpkin and the Baron and others were Japanese
this scene in particular was my favorite, I really felt the feeling with which she dances, an excellent actress
Hatsumomo is seething, jealous of a child 🤣
Hater a$$ hatsumomo at the end lol
Catharsis, passion. And she was fully clothed!
Beautiful and impressive dance ❤❤I love Sayuri dance
growing up in the drag scene this shows alot of how queens are so jaded. and their hatred to anyone that shows them up
Drag scene is pure hatred anyways sooo
色んな所が上手くアメリカナイズされてて、日本人の私もエンターテインメントとして楽しむことができた
Wow so beautiful and graceful
This scene reminds me of the story of the yuki onna
It's too bad, this movieclips logo is not big enough...Can you make it bigger please ? Thank you
🤣
It's 2022 and it's still my very favorite movie. 💖💖💖💖💖💖💖💖
Me at the grocery store after finding out their is a sale on sea weed.
Bruh.
So beautiful❤
japanese culture has to be one of the most visually pleasing things on planet earth.
Book describes this scene so much better but I always gave the movie props for trying to recreate it
Hey ... thanks, YT. I've always loved the book and movie. I haven't seen this part in a looong time.
This was the most iconic scene💯
And America's national dance is Square dancing. Cultured and culture.
False equivalent
If I were to do this out in public people would call me crazy and call the cops...nowadays 😂
This reminds me of flash dance movie. During the shower show but with snow
It was at this moment that Hatsumomo knew for sure that her days were numbered
This is so beautiful on so many levels!❤👘👡💃
I would’ve fallen 😂the back bend was my favorite it was so cool
My friend sent me this book like two years ago. I should really read it.
It was the best scene in the movie
the dance that sayuri performed is the snow dance.
Only Oiran or Tayu would wear these shoes. And a maiko would never have her hair like this, nor her makeup. Geiko might, but only at mature stages, and only for the sake of dance, as artists. But in reality, there is no such thing as selling the virginity of a maiko, or a Theater being booked for the debut of a maiko. The whole thing has been “westerned” to appeal to a western audience
This wasn't her debut. This was a theater performance, she was supposed to be playing a courtesan whose lover abandoned her.
Her debut was just her at a party with Mameha earlier in the movie.
AbbyWhisperWitch Yes but this was her first “public” appearance. I don’t know what to call it, it doesn’t exist in real life
I agree, even the movements of the dance are too fast, very far for the grace and slow movements of a geisha. I was thinking the same, this scene is to appeal the aesthetic perception of a modern western audience.
Sylla Atlas it’s a film, doesn’t really matter, it’s a gorgeous piece of cinematography and that’s all that matters
@@teacupalice Sadly that's not true. Not only is this cultural appropriation in one of its worst forms, this film itself made the world believe that Geisha are prostitutes, slaves sold when still children and selling their virginity. It did immeasurable damage to the reputation of the hanamachi, the Geisha districts, and stereotypes are so difficult to wipe out.
Looks as if she becomes a Swan in the end after her death.
This was a beautiful movie 🎥
Damn my girl is ✨flexible ✨
masterpiece.
All of this made me think about Yuki Onna ^^
I’m saying! I thought this was the dance of Yuki Onna
i wish i had a parasol and a kimono and tall shoes so i can wear as i can dance on stage.
This is a movie of great positivity and great creative potential. Such a film is difficult to create, but it is even more difficult to understand it correctly.
That was surprisingly entertaining.
as beautiful as this scene is, and as much as i know hollywood just took a bunch of different elements and mashed it together for dramatic scenery, i just dont get why a geisha is in orian shoes doing a kabuki performance.
i feel i wont be able to watch the film without being annoyed with the inaccuracies
Mmm. Now that you mention it. I also thought the hair was wrong too for a geisha.
This is my favorite book and movie 🍿
One of my favorite movies.
I only wish that Japanese actresses was cast in the roles of Sayuri, Mameha and Hatsumomo. 😢
I'm wondering if anyone can tell me? I was under the impression geishas always where the same hairstyle? Would this long hairstyle be inaccurate?
War on red tailight covers were bright wight light shines threw.
but JUSTINCASE replace it and being replaceable isnt easy .
So breathtaking
2:25 FINISH THEM!!
i wish i could dress like her and dance like her.
Never seen this movie but damn this is a cool scene
Just, snow and tears of sweat
I feel like traditional Japanese dance isn't like this...
How so?
Its not
It's not. This film is HYPER Americanized in every way from the dancing, to the costumes, makeup and nearly everything else. It makes for beautiful cinematography, but it is in no way accurate or representative of traditional Japanese culture or the Flower and Willow World.
1934 A.D.
One of my favorite books
All this so he could see her
I love this movie so much
Although the hair and makeup weren't quite right, everything else was downright accurate
That’s what I thought about the hair
Everything else was inaccurate aswell
“She fell clean off her shoes”
This dance feels like my life. I wish I was this pretty at least. lol
The most unintentionally funny scene in the movie for sure, when she starts flailing her arms it always cracks me up
It's a dance.
What an easily entertained dolt.
Who here read the book before watching the movie? 👏🏽
Snow dance memories of a geisha
The Flashdance of a Geisha
I feel like the world has lost much of its culture. We still “hang” onto our cultures and try to preserve our history but it’s sad that we have to.
"tHE bo0k iS MucH bEtteR ThAN tHe m0ViE"
Isn’t the actress Chinese not japanese ?
Yes she is
I been into kabuki recently and she did a Ebi-zori / えびぞり at the end there would a geisha even know how to do that back then? Also she a geisha so would she even be aloud to perform that dance in the first place? It looks like a dance a Onnagata would do instead but what do I know I just love kabuki.🤷♀️😂
many dance routines just can't cut the mustard
lots of Americans think they can dance
I watched rammstein engel after this and it felt so good
With the book I wanted her to be with nobu
I would break my ankles
