Wow, jam-packed episode. Ketchup, fruit tarts, prize winning potatoes and a sea of tomatoes. Rainbow dancing and back yard bathing. Just a happy celebration of how good life can be 😊❤️
Thanks, Jeff! 😊 We’re so glad you enjoyed the video! It really was a joyful celebration of everything we've been growing 💚 But no jam even in the jam-packed episode 🙃😀
Peter is always so happy when something works out. You are so fun to watch in these discoveries. Tommy, you are a little more sarcastic....but I like that, too. Like, "What did you expect?"
Thanks, Fran! 😄 You’ve got us figured out! The excitement and the sarcasm balance things out! Glad you enjoy watching our dynamic 😁
Loved your potato harvest. The rainbow was amazing. Great job farmers.
Thank you! 😊 We’re glad you enjoyed the potato harvest and the rainbow-it was such a lovely surprise! 💚
Your household property is the Garden of Eden, so productive! Thanks a lot for yet another great video.
"Garden of Eden" You got that right! I'm so jealous of those guys.
Thank you very much, we definitely love spending time in our Garden of Eden 😁💚
Congratulations, Peter, the plum pie looked delicious as well as pleasing to the eyes.
Glad you liked it, it was so yummy 😊
What a wonderful harvest. You have done very well. You won't go hungry for a long time. But its your love for each other that is the best by far.
Thank you, Ron! 😊 We really appreciate your kind words! The harvest has been amazing 💚
Great video guys. You two are amazing. I love how self sufficient you have become. Amazing. ❤❤
Many thanks, Andrew. It's been very fulfilling 😊
You are self-sufficient, " YAY, YAY, YAY!" as Peter would say. It's a great feeling, isn't it? And no chemicals or fertilizers.
It's an amazing feeling. Yay!! 😁😊
Congratulations for the bumper crop of tomatoes and potatoes. Your garden is so beautiful and productive. Good work guys! Love and hugs to you both.
Thank you! 😊 We really appreciate it! We're thrilled with the harvest this year and glad you enjoyed the video 😁
Those tiny 'new' potatoes are delish sautéd in a little olive oil and butter. Good eating!
Ok, we will not throw them on the compost then... 😁
What a bountiful harvest Tommy and Peter! My favorite scene was cavorting in front of the rainbow and the great background music, it reminded me of being in Europe, although my last visit was 24 years ago….maybe I’ll return someday. I hear you about the warm weather, we have had very hot weather in the desert (even mid 40C) into early October! 🌵 Take care guys💕
Thanks so much! 😊 Glad you enjoyed the rainbow scene-it’s one of our favorites too! Wow, 24 years is a long time; we hope you get to visit Europe again someday. It must have changed a lot since then. Stay cool in that heat 😉😁
you are so lucky to have a large area for growing your own foods and without lots of chemicals. Food has become so expensive in the USA. Enjoy enjoy enjoy!!
Thanks so much! 😊 We feel really lucky to have the space and grow our own food. It’s great that we can have so many organic goodies, a big variety. Sorry to hear about the prices in the USA 🫤
You've sold me on using hay for potatoes. It will be my project in 2025! Really excited to give this a try!
Thanks, Michael! So happy to hear that! 😊 It’s been a great method for us-hope it works just as well for you in 2025. Good luck with your project!
Hello There Tommy and Peter , Hope you are Both well , Great video , A Big Massive Amazed of your Great Crop ,you Have done so well , This was so interesting and enjoyable to watch , you are really Great farmers , loved watching it All , so Thank you for sharing , Keep up your Great work , Take care , 🌟👍👍
Hi, Paul! 😊 Thanks so much! We’re really glad you enjoyed the video and our harvest this year. Appreciate your kind words! Take care and thanks for watching 😁😉
Hi Guys: Your potato crop is remarkable. I have never heard anyone who just planted them in hay and grass. Amazing! Also, you are both just plain wonderful. Thank you for sharing your journey with us. DA
Hi, Donald! Thank you so much! 😊 We're glad you find the hay method interesting-it’s been a great experience for us. We appreciate your kind words and are happy to share our journey with you!
I love tomatoes, you have a great variety as well. There are so many things you can do with them. My sister used to make different sauces with herbs for a pasta sauce base and freeze it. I also love sun dried, it's so simple to do. Great harvest of potatoes as well. It's always so rewarding to grow your own food.👍❤️
Thanks! 😊 We love tomatoes too-so versatile! Freezing sauces sounds very nice. Sun-dried tomatoes are delicious! It really is rewarding to grow our own food! 😊
How nice guys to witness the result of all the effort and dedication you put into your beautiful place.
The harvest of those reddish-skinned potatoes ( at least that's they look on the screen) is impressive. Here this variety is highly coveted and they are even more expensive than the others.
And those tomates are from the cover of a magazine.
I can't stop imagining all the recipes I would make with those vegetables and fruits I love cooking. In addition to being a necessity, it is a theraphy.
Has been a pleasure as always sweeties. See you soon.
Thank you so much, Liliana! 😊 We really appreciate your kind words! Those red-skinned potatoes are a favorite of ours, and we’re excited to cook with them too. Cooking is such a great therapy, I can confirm (Tommy not so much) 😁 Always a pleasure to hear from you-see you soon 😉
Wow the garden IS beautiful lovely couple
Thank you very much, Ednie 😉
@@tommyandpeter no worries
I love Tomatoes 😍
We do too!! 😁😊
Couldn't resist another comment. Yay, Tommy, how did Peter convince you to dance under the double rainbow? And they were so very bright colors. The end to a wonderful day with the promise of more beautiful days to come.
Sometimes Tommy can surprise us all 😁 Must have been the power of Mother Nature 😊💚
Guys we in the states buy bags of the small potatoes. They too are very good eating alone. On top of that there is no need to peel them to cook. Very productive guys in your garden. Wise men you are. You will be eating and we will be starving depending on stores. Lol
Oh my gosh! You and Tommy have definitely had a good garden this year. I am so happy for that because you both work so hard planting and growing such a variety of produce. Happy Harvesting!
We shall try the small ones, sounds very nice 😊 We don't have to buy almost any vegetables and fruits in the stores, which we love so much 😁
🇲🇽👋. Wow what an incredible harvest‼
It was amazing! Thanks 😉😁
Loved this Postboys I’m glad I’m not the only one that has an abundance of tomatoes. I’ve been bagging them up and giving them away in the village just too many but oh how delicious with fresh bread
Tomatoes are so yummy! So it's awesome that you have so many that you even have to give them away 😁 Glad you liked the video 😉
I've heard of this hay method for growing vegetables before, but you've convinced me to try it next year !
Hi, glad the video inspired you to try it. Hope it works well for you next year! We were pleasantly surprised 😊
I'm sure you can also use them as items for sharing with neighbors, friends and family
It's not that much. We will eat all of them throughout the whole year 😉
nice video guys i have grown winter squash using hay bales before but never tried potatoes
Thanks, Simon! Glad you liked the video 😊 Winter squash in hay sounds great! Potatoes worked well for us, and we'll show how it is with our pumpkins in one of the upcoming videos 😉
Double rainbow…good luck all year.
Absolutely, hopefully it will be so 💚😁
Yeah, no need to shop for family this Christmas, everybody gets potatoes.🎄🤗🦌😂
😂 Right? Everyone's getting a taste of our potato harvest this year! Who wouldn’t love homegrown spuds for Christmas? 🎄🥔🤗
I had not heard of the hay method for potatoes what a good idea l will try it next summer. Envious of your tomato harvest and your peppers too. UK summer has been dull and cool and except for cherry tomatoes the other varieties grown outdoors are still green. l harvest them and hope they will ripen indoors in a warm conservatory.
It takes a lot of work but well done for your bumper crops of fruit, veg and nuts.
Thanks, Martin! 😊 Glad you found the hay method interesting-hope it works well for you next summer. We definitely loved it! Sorry to hear about your cool summer; fingers crossed your tomatoes ripen indoors (they usually do)! It’s definitely a lot of work, but it’s worth it for those harvests 💚
The rain bow. Promise of God kept to man kind.
We love it, such a beauty 😊💚
I could eat a bucket of those hazelnuts, they look so yummy. They're quite expensive to buy here in GR so congrats on growing your own. Your energy and hard work are admirable, and I'm looking forward to the hedge growing, that will really transform the property I think. Keep up the great work!
Thank you 😉 The hazelnuts are quite expensive here too, so we are glad we could have a lot of them in the future. We can't wait for the hedge to grow big to shield us from the neighbors 😁
Wow, so many clean potatoes 22:20 congrats!
Thanks, it's so great 😊
@@tommyandpeter what is your favorite potato dish, any from the region you want to share?
Potatoes are mostly used as a side dish here, either cooked potatoes, potato puree, or baked potatoes. There isn't much creativity with them in Central Europe, haha 😃 In one of the Christmas videos we showed a Christmas potato salad with mayonnaise, that one is very popular. We shall show something in the future, potato dough is also very nice, so there could be some baked goodies 😊
I remember you manually picking those beetles off the potatoes, soooo many of them.👍
Yes! Last year there were millions of them, but this year Tommy was on high alert the whole season, so he was picking them gradually to avoid them spreading too much.
You have such a huge harvest of potatoes, enough to last a year. I'd like to see you do a video sharing the many varieties of dishes and recipes you make to keep from getting bored with them. Everything from chips to casseroles; shepherds or cottage pie, to dumplings, gnocchi, etc. Probably there are special dishes local to your region, but I"m sure you've also ventured into those of other cultures. Please share.
Thanks for the suggestion! 😊 We do have a lot of potatoes, and there are so many possibilities. We'll see if we make something worth filming 😁
Time to make tons of different flavors of potato chips,
As for your soaking tub you can add some bath salt. Based on size maybe a cup of salt.
We were thinking about that, but we were worried about how it would be then when we would want to water the plants with the water.
@tommyandpeter bath salts are safe especially when you think about the little bit of salt levels
I am also using hay for potatoes but my peppers are struggling, yours are looking so good. I am jealous 😊❤ enjoy
Thank you! 😊 Peppers can be tricky to grow-we’ve had our challenges with them too. Glad to hear you're also using hay for potatoes! Best of luck with your peppers, hope they pick up soon!
Yep. It’s a crate ❤
Thanks 😊
I can’t believe the variety of plants you’ve built up. Do you get overwhelmed? Any new things to plant next year? Thanks for the video ❤❤
Thanks, Greg! 😊 It can definitely get overwhelming at times, but we love it! We’re thinking about trying out a few new plants next year, just not sure which ones yet. Glad you enjoyed the video! ❤
Your calcium was perfect!
I LOVE hand-pie!
It would be interesting to see, if you go there, to do any grocery shopping. I can imagine it must be very little, but there are some things you can’t grow in the garden that is used for cooking. Take us with you if you do indeed do go to a grocery store. It would be interesting.
We still have to buy quite a few things, because fruits and veggies are not everything, and not all of them can be stored over winter. We need flour for baking, butter, sugar and all these things, rice, quinoa, cheese, tuna... And the list goes on and on 🙂
I really like your fries with your potatoes. My channel is also preparing to grow potatoes
That is so nice, hopefully it will go well for you too 😊
The blossom end rot for tomatoes are indeed caused by a calsium deficiency, but normally it is not caused by a lack of calsium in the soil - but uneven watering making the plant unable to absorb the calsium in the soil. Planting the plants deep should help for that issue.
Regarding the potatoes: I once saw a video where someone claimed the potatoes tasted different depending on what medium they were grown in (i.e soil, compost, hay). Something to experiment with? :)
Thanks for the info on the blossom end rot, that makes sense! We’ll try to keep an eye on the watering next season. As for the potatoes, we didn’t notice a difference between those grown in soil and hay, but it's still an interesting idea to experiment with! We definitely prefer the hay method though 😊
Such a wonderful life you are living! Are you growing saffron crocus? I call growing potatoes in hay the Ruth Stout method. She was a "lazy" gardener. I do not mean to insult her. One of her books was, "How to have a green thumb without an aching back."😃. I love her philosophy of gardening.
Thank you, we really enjoy life in the countryside 😊 We grow autumn crocuses. Ruth sounds like a smart gardener 😁 We also prefer natural methods, and we don't need everything to be perfect 🙂
On the top of your plum cake you should put a layer of crumble or so called streusel. It`s a mix of butter, suger and flour. Hmmm ...
That would be tasty, but there is already a lot of butter in the crust, so I didn't want to add more. We prefer when it's lighter. And the same with sugar.
What is your ketchup recipe? I don't like ketchup here in the US because it's too sweet. Possums and Raccoons keep eating our tomatoes but I don't mind too much, I love having them on the property. We had that same problem as you with the tomato bottoms last year but not after adding coffee grounds to the topsoil. Peter dancing under the rainbow is the gayest thing I've ever seen! 🌈🥰 I love it! Jeez - that potato harvest is HUGE! Thanks again for taking the time to share your stories! I know someone who grows EVERYTHING in hay bales. Tomatoes, strawberries, potatoes of course. Amazing isn't it?
Hi, thank you so much, makes us happy to hear you enjoyed the video 😊 Your "pets" sound like fun to have in the garden, hopefully they don't cause too much damage 😁💚 We both danced under the rainbow, but Tommy more, which was quite a surprise. He is usually the serious one 😊🙃
Here is the ketchup that I made (I have two various recipes, but I like this one better):
Ingredients:
1.5 kg ripe tomatoes - chopped
100 g onion, chopped
2 garlic cloves, minced
100 g sugar
80 ml apple cider vinegar (5-6% acidity)
1 tsp salt
1 tsp sweet paprika
1/4 tsp ground cinnamon
1/4 tsp ground cloves
1/4 tsp mustard powder or a bit of mustard
1 bay leaf
1/2 tsp black pepper
Instructions:
Add everything except the sugar to a pan and simmer covered for 1 to 1¼ hours at medium heat.
Then transfer to a pot and blend. Strain it through a food mill.
Return to the pan, add the sugar, and cook for 15 minutes, stirring constantly. It should thicken at least a little.
Then pour the hot ketchup into containers using a funnel. Close and turn the containers upside down to cool off.
Next time you need to drain the tank try this. Put your garden hose in the tank. Turn on the water as if filling just long enough for water to start going into the tank. Then turn the water off. Remove the hose from the source. Believe it or not the water should start coming out of the tank. You can gather it in buckets then or if your hose is long enough water your plants. It may not drain the entire tank but should most of it!
Thanks for the tip! 😊 The main issue is that we don’t disconnect the hose (it’s connected deep in the well to the pump), so the water would just flow back into the well, which we wouldn’t want since it’s not clean water. Also, the barrel is quite low on our property, so it probably wouldn’t flow out much even if we tried, as it would be uphill. But we appreciate the suggestion 😉
@@tommyandpeter Yes, if water source is deep in the well this won't work! 😂 Take care!
Beautiful rainbow. They usually don’t show well on camera. And fall crocus! What are you going to do with all the hazelnuts? We’ve had a long summer. Still quite warm in October.
Thank you! 😊 We got lucky with that rainbow-it was very strong (even a double rainbow) and showed up well on camera! As for the hazelnuts, we'll mostly be using them for our oatmeal, but we'll see how many we have after shelling them 😉
Bones and seashells will also help with calcium boost
Not many bones lying around here, and sadly no Mediterranean Sea here with seashells either 😁
@tommyandpeter check with local butcher. I'm sure they have extra bones that they have cut out of different types of animals. Allot of times they will sell them as dog bones.
The 'ugly' tomatoes have blossom end rot. Sprinkle some Epsom salt on the soil when the tomatoes begin to form and that should fix the problem.
Thanks for the tip, Neil 😉
watching this video mid-way through i noticed Peter was wearing the same shirt i am wearing, the blue one with the dark blue collar and sleeve but mine is green, i've had it for years but now i need to keep an eye out to buy another one
and don't forget to track down the end of the rainbow to find the pot of gold, usually everyone chooses the wrong end and there is nothing, how do you choose the correct end of the rainbow
That’s so fun about the T-shirt! I stole mine from Tommy! 😄 As for the rainbow, we just follow our hearts-maybe that’s the secret to finding the pot of gold! But we are still poor, so who knows 😁
Hello you two. I think you are very good at what you are doing, and when things work out it just makes one feel happy and content. But it just wondering, are those beetles the only problem on your potatoes? here we also struggle with slugs too. They eat the leaves and borrowing under the soil and munch on the potatoes as well. But I will try this method next year❤. Greetings from Norway.
Hi Kenneth! Glad you like our videos, thanks 😉 When it comes to potatoes, the only problems we have are with the potato beetles. We have to check the plants every day and pick the beetles manually, otherwise they can spread quickly and destroy all the plants. We have a lot of slugs (invasive big brown ones) in the garden, but they don't cause problems on the potatoes. They cause other problems - they eat leaves of our small shrubs, sometimes lettuce, or leaves of zucchinis and pumpkins when they are young. You are right, they like hiding in the mulch. But luckily they seem to prefer other things than potatoes. We have to pick the slugs from time to time so there is a bit less of them. You can see Tommy picking them in this video: ruclips.net/video/VdPPNqy43j4/видео.html
So sad that not even a single mention of the pond... 😢
We can't mention it every time but we show it almost in every video in montages of clips of the garden, even if just for a bit. The water lilies have been flowering which we love. It's been doing well 😉
👋 You could exchange potatoes for something if you have to many ❤
No way, we love our potatoes and there is never too many of them. We need enough to last us the whole year 😁
Doesn’t look like hay to me Straw is what you are using not hey
Hi, it's old hay (made mostly of grass clippings) which is decomposing. We prepare it one year, let it lay in the garden over winter, and then in spring we plant into it. Definitely not straw.
