Dead Rising Chop Till You Drop is a Strange Game

- For my yearly Halloween Spooktacular series I decided to finally play a game that I've talked about for several years now. The Nintendo Wii version of Dead Rising is a very particular game, and as someone who knows the original game to a disturbing degree, it was a very strange experience playing it.
So join me today as I see what all the fuss is about and dive deep into all the differences and changes.

EDIT: (07/15/24) - Thanks to the recent announcement of the Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster this video has once again gotten another huge surge of views and more great comments. Thank you everyone truly for watching and I appreciate every comment that's left on the video. I never expected any video of mine to do this well and from having this video stuck at 25 views for over a year to now almost hitting 40k really warms my heart. Once again I say thanks and I hope to see you again in the future as I play more games on the channel.
(Don't worry I'm absolutely doing a video on Dead Rising Deluxe Remaster the second it drops, so look forward to that)
[Channel Comment] - Hey everyone! I just wanted to come out and say thank you for watching my video on Dead Rising Chop Till You Drop. It seems RUclips has been pushing this one out to everyone's feeds because it's been blowing up in views for me the past two weeks. I recorded this video over a year ago and it was probably one of my favorites to work on, since I knew I would have a lot to say about this particular port and the Dead Rising series as a whole. I hope you were able to find some enjoyment from the video, whether it be from the jokes I made, the scary degree of my DR1 knowledge or from anything I said during the video. I put hours of work into these videos and It feels great to see one of these get traction and get lots of great comments as well.
So once again thanks for watching and I hope to see you again in the future. (12/22/23)
I thought playing original Dead Rising on a crap old tube TV was the worst graphics I seen on Frank West wii version of Dead Rising is GameCube level of graphics not a huge surprise seeing how a GameCube is pretty much the base console for the Nintendo wii
This was my introduction to dead rising (family was poor and couldn’t afford a 360) and let me tell you even this version amazed me at the time. I thought it was revolutionary. Imagine my reaction when I got to play dead rising 2 a few years later 🤣
Cool to hear you had a good time with this version of the game. 🤘🏿
I loved the wii port. The Xbox version was to hard for a while.
Same exact experience for me
@@SuperCuttyBlackSow I hated leach man lol
Going from the 360 version to this is like enjoying a filet at a nice steakhouse, then going to McDonald’s and picking up a McRib
That’s a perfect on point example of this port lol.
just like Ronald for real
I'd still eat a mcrib
@@_zigger_I had one the other day lol
I mean 360 is obviously the superior version but I ain’t gonna lie there’s a lot of unique additions to this version that are really cool, zombie versions of bosses and zombie animals etc
Probably the one good thing in the Wii version that would’ve been useful in the original would be when the dialogue pauses the game. There’s some parts in Dead Rising where it felt as if the in-game dialogue went on for two long. Not to mention the fact that there’s a time limit.
I had to hear the two japanese tourists argue hundreds of times because one of them would always die on the way back. That was frustrating as hell. What annoyed me even more, was the calls from otis limiting you to just being able to walk around. With the remake coming soon, id sure love them to change that.
41:40 It’s so weird that they removed Adam’s boss theme and gave him Kent’s instead. Especially since Kent is turned into a reoccurring mini boss
I like how Capcom invented modern zombie survival just to reinvent it with the first Dead Rising it felt like 90's arcade games put on home console with the classic Resident Evil style story telling then made it a pseudo open world
Dead rising is definitely my favorite beat em up
I played both versions, the original and CTYD, and I gotta say.. The timer only really mattered if you were trying to kill the population of the town or save every survivor. If you're just playing casually, it never really mattered.
That said, the aiming was soooooo much better on Wii than on the 360, the controls were just perfect for using the Mega Buster for me. In fact, I never really used guns in the original until the overtime sequence because mini-chainsaws and mannequins are OP as fuck.
Despite this being an objectively bad port and not the best way to experience Dead Rising 1, I for whatever reason, will always have a weird soft spot for Chop Till You Drop just because of how bizarre it is. Even though my first experience with DR1 was on the 360, I still can't help myself from admiring it, and the team that made it did the best they could trying to recreate Dead Rising 1 besides the bosses and it playing in the RE4 engine. I'd play Chop Till You Drop over Dead Rising 4 any given day of the week.
Did you ever realised that the zombie that killed cletus was the survivor he shot?I started playing on the 360 beacuse i was bored and i got to this part and i just realized that zombie totally looks like that survivor.Same clothes same size and you can even see the hole in his stomach.Did they made that on purpose?
Ronald is a person I wouldn't have in my zombie surviving group. He'd eat all the rations.
Ronald remind of that boss in dead rising 3
@@Trouble031 I never played 3
I can’t get over that they just made a re4 mod
I played this version as a kid, as well as the 360 version (to a lesser extent). Chop really warped my memory of Dead Rising, I didn't think it was very good until not too long ago. Recently replaying it on pc, it's become one of my favorite games of all time. Good video man, took me back
The blocked off areas and the fact that there are only certain parts of this version where you can freely roam the mall outside of a mission make the walk through walls hack a necessity for any playthrough of this to get closer to a normal experience.
My least favorite part about Chop Till You Drop are the zombies themselves. It's understandable they had to reduce the number of zombies on-screen to compensate the Wii's inferior hardware capabilities compared to the Xbox 360, but to make up for it, they give us the zombie poodles and zombies parrots, two very annoying enemies. In fact, I would sooner deal with the gas zombies in Dead Rising 2 than those, and unlike the gas zombies, they are there for the whole game. Then for some reason, they had to zombify some of the psychopaths from the original too.
Without the zombies animals and zombie psychopaths, it would be a better game, though still inferior to the original.
"We have plenty of dead rising at home"
I love your joy reciting the intro lines lol. I do that all the time with my favorite games
Super late to the party here, but the reason for the sectioned off paths around the mall are because of the zombie limitations. If you were at a split path, and both paths were open to you, there would clearly be an easy route because of the lack of zombies on screen at a time. So what the game is doing by sectioning paths off is basically trying to push you into the zombies.
I agree Majora's Mask and this game are amazing with the time element. It made me feel like the world was more living than most open-world games.
100%. I wish more games honestly used the time mechanic because it offers so many possibilities for gameplay and story.
Dude this videos hilarious, I started watching without looking at who I was watching and thought you would have like 50k subs
Thank you so much for watching, I’m glad you enjoyed the video.

Bruh the shotgun animations look like the ones from RE4
Because it is.
It is because the studio who worked on re4 for the Wii worked on this
TO BE FAIR...Dead Rising 2 has money.
Very true. A close friend of mine recently brought that exact point up to me and I feel like I accept it more in that game than Chop Till You Drop. I think the environment that the 2nd game takes place in, helps with establishing the basis of money more. Still a bit goofy overall with the need for money in a zombie attack, but its a video game so I can't complain too much about realism there lol.
This was the first and only Dead Rising game that I played and I'll be honest and say that I actually enjoyed my time with the game.
I think the reason why people don't like the time limit is mostly cause of infinity mode. Some people just wanted something like Off the record had a fully in tact freemode. I say keep the story on a time limit cause Dead Rising 4 showed how bad no time limit is and just keep freemode as its own thing and maybe a difficulty to make your health decrease like in OG Dead Rising if you wanted that challenge.
The blacktail is based on a glock (i am pretty sure it was, but i could be wrong) which is a polymer frame handgun. While they are as sturdy as a metal frame, polymer used for most pistols wouldn't break like that regardless what happens in that mall entrance part.
Makes me wonder if one of the developers just hated Glocks and thought that was funny to do that as a stab at Glock.
Edit:
Thank you ShadowGamer300 for the correction on the model. That would change that thought on the developers not liking glocks to just not liking polymer pistols.
The Blacktail is a Springfield Armory XD, and I'm pretty sure it was like that so you did not use the best handgun in the game for more than that first part...really would rather just not have it at all, to be honest considering the cap on zombies make that first part stupid easy. Either way, like you said, it would not break so easily unless it was already in BAD shape...and Frank honestly seems the kind of person with very little firearm knowledge to begin with (outside his 'war experience') so I guess that checks out?
@@ShadowGamer300 i don't know just how much of the traits of Resident Evil 4's guns are actually in this version of Dead Rising, but if the Red 9 and Blacktail both are exactly the same in performance in this game, then they both are the top handgun in either Damage per shot or damage per second. Similar thing would apply to the Broken Butterfly and Killer 7.
@@GamerXDaringDoX while the lack of an upgrade system makes the Killer 7 objectively better than the BB, if memory serves The Red 9 keeps its title as the stronger shot for shot pistol despite both starting at the same power in RE4 while the Blacktail had overall better stats otherwise. Its hard to tell as the game used a letter ranking rather than raw numbers for stats.
@@GamerXDaringDoX just looked it up, the Red 9 did have higher firepower than the Blacktail, but the Blacktails other stats were higher than the Red 9. like RE4 its a case of 'do you want high single target damage or a more versatile weapon?' the Broken Butterfly unfortunately has lower stats overall than the Killer 7, which you can get for free late in the game.
@@ShadowGamer300 so with what you said about the Broken Butterfly and the Killer 7 i am going to guess there is no Exclusive Upgrades like the ones you could get in Resident Evil 4, since that is what made the Broken Butterfly able to do 50.0 Damage per shot.
Not gonna lie.. as someone who’s first 360 game 18 years ago was Dead Rising, I always thought, like you, Frank’s limp and animations were due to him jumping out of the helicopter.
the wii was great or at best a better gamecube, but there are some things that should not have gone on there

Pay with your blood
love dead rising series. watching the Wii version is interesting lol
I thought this was the only version until a couple of years ago. I played this as a kid and never got past the war guy boss at the end.
I bought the original last year and got around to beating it a couple months ago and just recently bought the second one (+ Off the Record) and the third game.
Such a good series
watching this as i do 7 day survivor in the background. Crazy to think this was the first Dead Rising game i actually played personally
The WII version was my first experience for this game. I was still a kid and it still looked awesome. Then I watched a trailer for the xbox version and my mind was blown. I've always wanted to go in that theater. All the things that I wanted to experience finally being available felt like a sequel to me and made the game even better. Super nostalgic game and among my top 10.
the Wii version of RE4 is Basicliy the Nintendo Gamcube version so yk u are playing basicly the GC version of DR1 xD
ONE OF MY PEOPLE, *MY BROTHER* !!! I grew up with ALL the Resident Evils on PS, Code Veronica on Dreamcast (great system BTW), and the Gamecube remake of the first REs is one of the best remakes ever. Especially for its time.
So you can imagine my excitement when I saw within a "gaming magazine" (kinda like a blog but made of papery stuff) had upcoming zombie game of the all time, Dead Rising on 360. HILARIOUS, inventive, and *packed* with zombies. Consider me meathooked immediately.
Because the game was so quirky and corny compared to the unintentionally quirky early REs, my family and cadre of other zombie hunters were a bit more put off by it. Too gory, too tongue in cheek (often literally)... but I was entranced. Really nailed that "itchy tasty" nerve that I needed itched, tasted. I remember the glorious day when I finally unlocked the laser sword after a monstrous marathon attempt. And then remembered the other day when my saves failed with my harddrive.
The sequels never did it for me in the same way. But here, in you my friend, I found my brother, a goofer who like me can quote the entire damn game lol. I've been on nostalgia trips with folk lately going over Final Fantasy VII Remake and such (my favourite narrative in gaming, thus pretty much my favourite game...), but to find someone going down a nostalgia jaunt with one of the best *GAMES* ever made, let alone best zombie game.
Great pleasure to meet you, very gladly subscribed, gonna have to check out your stuff man! Thanks again for your hard work and humour! Be safe out there, the blood's all dried so every Friday is a Black Friday. Mind the ankles.
i will say cletus was the least psychotic of the psychos he just wanted to be left alone the true psycho was that random guy i mean cletus straight up says dont come any closer or ill shoot and that guy straight up just starts walking forward! i will say i like the idea of you saving him but maybe rather then buying stuff from him yould bring him gun parts to turn into guns
I like how this guy unintentionally explained one of the first egorapter videos lol
Man this is a fever dream. Id like to imagine someones thoughts on the original after being used to this version.

It's not a Dumb theory
It's a GAME THEORY!
Damn, Frank was packing heat when he went to the Willamette Mall. Stay strapped or get clapped
I love how this game takes place on my literal birth date
Such a good insight to this weird port, not to mention that commentary though. Subbed!
What do you mean ending B
you always get ending C where you get nothing if you don't 100% the game
285 subs only? such a good mic imma sub bro you aint even one of those small yt's you say you like cause you pity them like you seem like you should have more subs defenitly
This is so weird. I 100% played this on the Wii when I was a kid, but I remember being able to take photos during the helicopter ride in, and it being almost nothing like this in a lot of ways. Was there a normal release for the Wii as well, or am I just fuck’n crazy?
@@jconte2343 You might be misremembering it with the 360 version, because the entirety of the camera mechanic was cut from the Wii port, along with the beginning helicopter section. Although you could’ve also been blessed with the one rare copy of Chop Till You Drop on earth with the camera feature added back in, so it can go either way.
Soon as you quoted the intro I subbed lmao
Excited for remake of the OG. They should make Chop till you drop deluxe 😂
@@N0VAST4R4 Then they’ll have it run off the gameplay of Resident Evil 4 Remake to keep it consistent with the original version lol. Honestly I’d still probably play it if that happened.
You are talking like shops weren't in dead rising 2 using money.
22:38 i did a double take thought that was wingsofredemption doing his dog wimper
As an RE4 enthusiast it feels so weird seeing the same game engine lmao
for lore reasons i find zombie parrots and dogs very strange. And it makes me sad since parrots are so intelligent and seeing them be zombies disturbed me.
It's funny cause this is essentially RE4 Wii reskinned
The little references you put in and sound effects are cracking me up so hard. The Hank Hill bwahhh when shooting the propane tank especially 😆
Idk if people commented about this before, but it’s weird that you’re complaining about the money system in this game and not saying a word about DR2’s. I mean I get that two different zombie outbreaks happened at that point of the series, but still, the looters are acting way too chill in that game
At the time of this recording i honestly forgot to bring up that point about DR2. Had I remembered I would’ve said something, because it’s even a little goofy in that game as well with the money situation.
While not as egregious as Chop Till You Drop in its execution, it’s still a humorous thing to put in a zombie game.
the number of the zombies in this game are just like in some cutsenes where there is no zombies just psychopaths
3:35
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
The dramatic closeup
if jerma's playthrough of 1 and off the record showed anything, its that trying to explore n have fun and also do all the cases are 100% not realistic. The time limit is definitely important but I see it as pressure to keep going through the main story when more often than not youre sacrificing side quests just to barely scrape by. You probably can't do every case comfortably until a 2nd or 3rd playthrough anyway.
It's extremely hard to pull off but you can actually do every side mission & main case in a 1st playthrough at level 1, It just requires some extreme knowledge of the game and major planning. Now if someone was playing for the 1st time this would be a terrible way to play it, as it can be a real pain in the ass in certain aspects.
You're definitely right in the point on tackling it on the 2nd or 3rd run as you'll have more moves and options at your disposal that make it a much more smooth and fun experience.
this game is actually more akin to the resident evil wii port, which it was no doubt based upon.
They were hoping for more of that Money.
😂
@@KYLE1654-v7m the studio who made the RE wii port also handled this iirc!
Personally I will allways think the second game is the best
I haven’t played the second game in a good bit but I remember liking that one quite a lot. It still managed to capture a lot of the charm from the 1st game and added a bunch of cool gameplay mechanics.
The weapon combos were very fun
All three games are good in their own way
But yeah DR2 is really good if m being honest every psychopath in 2 are bangers and fun personality wise
Dead rising 1s psychopath’s are more grounded
And Dead rising 3 psychopaths are fine
We don’t talk about DR4 it never happened.
Dr2 off the record is my favorite in the series
I loved Dead Rising 2. My brother and I got the Platinum playing it all in co-op
Fun video, I'm surprised not many have covered it though what caught me off guard were the animals that could now attack... though I'd think the bird is probably the most annoying to deal with if you are stuck to shoot in one spot. But yeah, the game on 360 briefly stops to let the impact really land where it is absent here and in the new Deluxe Remaster. Curious, any thoughts on the Remaster coming in September?
@@ScottE-2 Thanks for watching, glad you liked it! To briefly give my thoughts I’m very excited for the Deluxe version, outside of the new voice acting which I’m still not feeling at the moment, everything else looks great. I’ll be picking it up and playing it the second it goes live.
@@Gamingwithclass Yeah, the new voices don't sit right with me either. ALSO. The OG Dead Rising had THE CRYPT KEEPER, as well as many other amazing voice talents. They aren't going to be beat anytime soon so it feels weird not to just use the original audio for this one.
this feels like RE4 reskinned lmao
WII was slightly better
Wait hold on if Jessie gave frank her gun when he already has a gun does this mean he has two guns XD
I bought this game solely because I wanted to play Dead Rising and I was staying at my second mom’s house for the week and we only had my Wii (My 360 was at my other mom’s house). Despite this port’s flaws, I still enjoyed this version
Technically it’s only Willamette that’s ending in the first Dead Rising game, so if Cletus made it out with all that money that you wind up paying him for Leon’s old hand me down weapons from Resident Evil 4, he’s in a good place financially despite losing his business due to the way that the zombie apocalypse is contained at the end of the game. 😂
This was the frist dead rising game I ever playd I still like it because I did not have xbox360 until 3 years after this game came out they do have some good new features but on the bad side something's are not good but I lookt at this game Like an alternate reality version of the game
Chop till you drop was my first introduction to Deadrising I remember the next game I played was like a slap in the nuts it was so different I still like how Cleetus works but other than that the game sucked
17:47 broooo that CKY song when you start skateboarding lmao. Subbed just for that
Randomly getting this after the announcement is making me become a kid again lol can’t wait to play again!
the commercial sounds like GaGaGa SP. probably one of their better known songs is Senko Hanabio and one of the Naruto endings
This was my first game cause I stole it from someone in the 3rd grade and going to the ps version is weriddddddddd I thought the wii was simple but the 360 is wild
It looks like the early demo of Dead Rising before it was on Xbox 360.
i feel like this would've been better off as a spin-off dead rising game instead of a remake of the first game tbh
The accidental finding of this video made my morning.
NEEERRRREEEERRRRRRRDDDDDDDDDDDDD 😊
It looks extremely shitty on the Wii I’m so glad I first played this on the 360.
The wii version imo had better gameplay only because it reminded me of Resident Evil 4.
damn, that game dude jump scare took me off guard, deep fucking reference
Really enjoyed your video bro, surprised you don’t have a lot more subs
I thought this was just a lets play, I wasnt ready for Gamedude on the CCTV lol 💀
I appreciate you using 96 quite bitter beings, despite their only ever being around 14 sort-of irritated individuals on screen at any given moment.
@@Robeebert Any moment where I can use CKY I’ll do it, even if the zombie count didn’t match the energy of the song lol.
Im still find it nice that Cletus in this infamous port is alive. But man the context it would been better handled. I mean with all the money thats literally around it would been pointless. Maybe instead escort him to the security room and he can provide as much ammo as you want? He'll hang out probably by Otis. Probably better then him being stuck in his store as that plaza is one of the worst infested areas of the game due to the state its in.
That actually would be an interesting idea if they had gone through with that. It makes more sense than him staying in the North Plaza for the entire game, and would give you an incentive to go back to the security room and do tasks for ammo or weapons.
I didn’t know there was a wii port. This is interesting
love that deep cut rocket power reference my dude
"mom can we gte dead rising?"
mom: we have dead rising at home.
Dead Rising at home:
Was not expecting to see a game dude reference 😂
7:30 he does that in the 360 version too.
still better than dead rising 4
God forgive me, but I had a great time playing this version (emulated with keyboard and mouse, tho)
If I ever get around to playing more of it I might have to try it out with a Keyboard and mouse setup. Maybe it’ll stop my aim from being horrendous.
@@Gamingwithclass Yeah! Also, being able to simulate the wii mote shaking with the simple press of a key helps to make the experience less irritating.
@@baifomet6425 Cool. I’ll try that configuration out next time I’m on the game.
The wii version ruined Dead Rising? Mhmm. Dead Rising 3 might have something to say about that
While I still haven't gotten around to playing Dead Rising 3 yet, I know with full certainty that Dead Rising 4 was the one that really did some major damage to the franchise.
@@GamingwithclassYep, pre-ordered it in 2016 and played for a few hours, but haven’t touched it since. It just didn’t click for me.
3 was a lot of fun though, and that extra mode in which the time passed a lot faster is always an option for those looking for something similar to the original experience.
@@Gamingwithclass Fans damaged the series who disliked the timer.
Bro keep on the grind 💯🤟
What do you think about the new remake?
I really like what I'm seeing from it so far, it's keeping some of the charm from the original game, while adding cool quality of life features. I'm still not feeling the decision to change all the voice acting, but I'll still be there day one to pick it up.
I actually did a video on my channel recently talking over the recent Capcom showcase and diving further into my thoughts on the Deluxe version.
One of the only times I can think of when a company essentially made an official “demake.” I played this back when it released and did certainly find it interesting. I later sold it as I preferred the 360 version more, but in hindsight I wish I had kept it as a little curiosity.
It's definitely worth keeping around as a little oddity, while not as good as the original it still has it's place as a weird experimental demake.
@@Gamingwithclassindeed. Also I think the reason why the Wii version added all those barricades is because the lower zombie count meant the devs had to find some way to force the player to go towards them rather than around. It’s clunky but I get it. Also you didn’t get far enough in this video to show it but they removed some of the psychopath fights, but as “compensation” turned a few of them in to special zombies. IIRC they did that with Jo, Kent, and Cliff.
what song was he playing in the quickstep part
The song was City Escape from Sonic Adventure 2.
NEEEEEEEEEERD!!!
:p
Did you add the cky or was it in the game?
That was something I added after the fact.
The only thing I liked about this version of the game was the sections where you didn't have to worry about time and the Mega Buster.
Good video 😄
Glad you liked it.
WHAT DID YOU SAY 4:43 I WANNA KNOW
One day I’ll reveal the truth, but that time isn’t now…
Okay to be real for a second, it was just a bunch of dumb Gus Fringe jokes from Breaking Bad that weren’t really funny. So I cut it out for dramatic effect.
@@Gamingwithclass XD I KNEW IT
Here's the thing yes it has some huge flaws. Yet it does fix several things from the original game too, people often forget that. Also it's a better game than Dead Rising 4. I have my own reasons for liking this unusual Dead Rising game. True fact, it's the only Dead Rising game I preordered lol.
Wow, this one looks like a lazy Sunday morning when the old people are walking around the mall. The feeling you get on the 360 game is like it's so congested in there and there's so many zombies you can't do anything we're here you can just pop shot them from every angle none of them are anywhere near you. Crazy how few zombies they were able to put on the screen at one time. The Wii is so wack
So this is the RUMORED open world Resident Evil game people have been talking about lately? XD
