Oh, thanks for the tips! Have never had the option of picking my own pomegranates (oh, my!). But I bought one at the supermarket recently and it didn’t look quite ripe to me because it wasn’t red all over, only on the side nearest the bottom, or where the flower once was. I left it out to see if it would ripen, but then had no idea how to tell if that had occurred. Your video was helpful-boxy shape, check. Hollow sound when flicked, check. I like the way you opened it! Very methodical. Usually I just begin peeling them somehow and discover the hidden rubies as I randomly tear off the skin. I love pomegranates. They’re very special.

But is it ripe enough to be sweet?? I picked a couple that were starting to look boxy and they looked amazing inside but they were super sour.

Hey Jon. Thanks! It sure takes at least some of the mystery out of picking ripe pomegranates. Now the challenge is learning the difference in ripe fruit between each of the cultivars I'm growing. Do you know what cultivars of pomegranate you've got?

Hi this is great. My pomegranates tend to split before they are ripe. Do you have any recommendations for that?

@@TheBusyGardener Great that was a perfect video! Usually they split and then the birds get into it, but I would say our pomegranates here in Adelaide, South Australia are usually fruiting in very late Summer or early Autumn and it can get very cold and rainy, and you are right, I have noticed the fungus occuring. We do have very hot days and then very cold, wet days so I will try to water them during the hot times. Actually one of the best things about pomegranates is that they cope very well with our 40 degrees C (100 degrees F) days without much water.
The first time I tasted a pomegranate was on a beach in Morocco during a mild summer and I have to say that before that time I never knew about them as they are not that popular in Australia. I have been lucky to have pomegranate trees in the last two properties I've lived in.
The best way to remove pomegranate seeds is to slice the pomegranate in half and then smack the pomegranate upside down into a bowl with a wooden spoon - have you tried this? It gets all the seeds out without the mess of peeling.

@@daniellearkit I love how resilient pomegranates are! Pretty low water needs compared to other fruit, packed with antioxidants, and TASTY. I enjoy picking out the arils when I eat them by myself, but that's because I like the challenge. I use the spoon method for larger quantities: ruclips.net/video/e3Vb8Du3lso/видео.html

Glad I could help! I know how the first fruit of a tree are truly the most prized. All that waiting and nurturing, so you *don't* want a bland fruit because you got too excited.

What if the flower end is fully dried up, hreavy feeling, sounds hollow, angular, but not red? Also 'wonderful' variety.

I think k that the shape generally matters more than the color. Your best bet is to open one and try it. If it's still unripe, wait longer! Are you in the southern hemisphere?

The beauty of using this method on your own tree, is it if you find any fruit is still unripe to your taste, give your fruit some more time before picking some new ones

What does it sound like when you flick it? What's its shape? Does it feel heavy for its size? All signs it's probably ripe. Are you in the Southern Hemisphere? (In North America were months away from fruit being ripe). My best advice to is open one and try it to see. If it's ready, then eat more. If not, give the others some time
